Dear Parents/Carers,

Kineton students get active and ‘go green’!

This week my message is dedicated to a very topical issue, hence the colour change and I’m

proud of our students who are so passionate and proactive in supporting the school to be

more environmentally friendly and moreover, are prepared to make a difference to society!

Thanks too, to Mrs Stephens who is helping them to prioritise and focus all their ideas and

enthusiasm.

Climate Action Youth Strike

On the 14th April, 3 Year 10 students from Kineton High participated in the Stratford Youth

Strike, proudly supported by the school. I was joined by Scarlet R and Anwen D. We were

permitted to leave school between 10.30 a.m. and 2.30 p.m. The aim of the strike was to try

to persuade Stratford Council to declare a climate emergency and take action in the local

area. We were joined by other students from different schools around Stratford. We

proceeded to hand out leaflets to the public- of which some took keen interest- about

climate awareness and the youth strike.

After a few hours, the initiator of the strike made a speech and Scarlet said some moving

and inspirational words about our obligation and duty to take action about our future. We

then collected signatures from the public and launched an online petition, which has

reached over 250 signatures. You can sign this by going to www.stratfordclimate.org/

petition/ .

We found the day helped with building our confidence, made us more aware of our CO2

usage and ways of reducing it, and we found the positive reaction form much of the public

very uplifting and promising, as we hoped to have inspired some of them too.

The Youth Strike is a global movement in young people, started off by Greta Thunberg. She

recently addressed the British Parliament, and afterwards they declared a national climate

emergency. This shows how all our efforts can make a difference. However, although this is

an important first step, we are not nearly close enough to tackling climate change, and time

is precious. As individuals and a school, we still need to try to improve our impact on the

environment

There is currently an Environmental

club during Friday form time in Sc8,

dedicated to reducing our waste as a

school. In addition, students can help

by giving disposable plastic bottles and

plastic wrappers to the tutor group for

eco-bricks. We are hoping to make a

bench from the made eco-bricks.

Climate change does not have to be an

overwhelming problem. If we all do a

little, whether that is participating in a

strike, signing a petition or simply

reusing a plastic bottle, we can help our

environment at its time of greatest

need.

Environmental Group

We have recently started an Environmental group with like-minded students who are

interested in making the school more environmentally friendly. So far we have purchased

recycling bags for each classroom, been out litter picking, created a form challenge to make

eco-bricks and created ‘turn lights off’ signs for each classroom. We meet weekly on a Friday

morning registration and are looking for more people to join.

You can even make small changes at home that will have an impact; create your own

eco-brick with the plastic waste that you already create as a household (then send them into

school), don’t use the plastic bags in the supermarket for your fruit and veg or shopping, use

zero waste shops for your staples (rice, pasta etc), switch to a 100% renewable energy

provider and turn lights off in your home when they are not needed.

The more we can get involved in the environment, the better place it will be for our children

and their children.

Year 8 Art

The Art department would like to say how pleased we have been with our amazing year 8

Surrealism paintings. Congratulations on the top three go to Mia, Peyton and

Danielle, whose work is displayed here. Students developed their imaginative skills,

observation skills and watercolour techniques. We look forward to their continued

progress next year on our GCSE Art course.

British Biology Olympiad

Earlier in the year we were very pleased to report that some of our Year 12 and 13

students took part in the British Biology Olympiad competition and came away with

fantastic results. Leo, who won Silver and Ellie, who won Bronze were both able to enter

a ballot for tickets to the Awards Ceremony and Leo has been lucky enough to win a

place! We hope Leo and his family enjoy the evening and please look out for details in

the next edition of the newsletter.

The Art department would like to invite all to our yearly A Level exhibition which will be

in the Art studio on Wednesday 3rd July 5.30-6.30pm.

Duke of Edinburgh Awards

36 intrepid Year 9 students participated in their qualifying expedition for their bronze Duke

of Edinburgh Award. It was an early start at Moreton in Marsh on the Saturday morning,

the sun was for once shining and last minute checks were made on sun cream, hats and

water, but soon they were off. The groups all navigated well with some minor difficulties

but the weather was slowing the groups down with students finding it hot. Despite this

most groups kept to time and spirits were high whenever they were seen by assessors or

staff.

The campsite soon filled up with kids as the groups arrived, tents were pitched, meals

cooked and then time to relax. The students all got along brilliantly and the nice weather

contributed to a relaxed evening atmosphere. Bright and early the next morning they were

up and keen to get going with the first groups leaving camp by 7.30am. All groups were off

by 8.15am and it was back to work for staff checking on groups filling water bottles and

offering encouragement.

Unluckily for the groups (but staff just got back to the vehicles in time after a walk) the

heavens opened and the rain started. The afternoon became showery but nothing too bad

and groups were soon arriving in Long Compton. A quick debrief from the assessors and

they were done. All were successful and Venture outdoor (our AAP) were very

complimentary about the behavior and conduct of our students throughout the weekend.

Well done to you all, now you need to be signing off all the other sections.

Warwickshire Youth Speaks Conference

Every year a group of Year 9 students attend the Warwickshire Youth Conference. With the

new statutory guidelines for Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) coming into place the

theme for this year was quite obvious. What do students want to know about RSE, how it

can be improved, how should it be taught etc. In preparation the students made a 60

second film expressing their views and thoughts. Unfortunately, technology got the better

of Mr Mitchell so we weren’t able to submit it, however, Mrs Bennett and Mrs Bigham

insist they would have won a prize, so here is an account of the day …….

On the 4th June six Kineton students attended the Warwickshire 2019 Youth Conference.

These students included Sam B, Joshua P, Parul B, Amy R, William B and Abigail G. This

year’s theme was based upon the new guidelines given for schools for RSE (Relationships &

Sexual Education). Throughout the day everybody enjoyed great food and presentations

alike. Each and every student participated in five workshops throughout the day giving

everybody a chance to learn lots of new things and voice their knowledge and opinions.

Whilst the students went off by themselves, the teachers were pulled reluctantly from

their coffee and cakes and taken to do the same workshops by themselves. So much for a

day out of the office, hey. The knowledge exchanged and the way in which it was delivered

was truly amazing and it is safe to say everybody left with a great amount of new

knowledge but I’m told this has to be kept PG so I won’t go into detail.

A great day was had by all and special thanks to Mrs Bennett and Mrs Bigham for keeping

us all in order.

Student Achievements - Rowing

On Friday 25th May, Will B in Year 9 competed in the National Schools Regatta at Dorney

Lake for Stratford Upon Avon Boat Club. This 3-day event took place at the 2012 Olympic

rowing venue, where over the course of the weekend over 5,000 athletes took part. Will

was stroke in a 4-person coxed quad over the 1,750m sprint. As the only mixed crew in

an open event, racing against all-boys crews, the Stratford boat rowed brilliantly, even

overtaking a crew from Windsor Boys School on the way to an extremely respectable 25th

place out of the 41 crews in his event. Even though only the top 18 crews went on to

compete in 6-lane side by side racing, Will and his crew still put on a fantastic

performance.

Athletics

Four athletes from Kineton High School represented South Warwickshire at the

Warwickshire Schools Athletics Championships in Nuneaton on Saturday 8th June, Alex P

(100m, Long Jump and Relay), Nicole B (Javelin), James K (200m) and Abbie W (1500m).

Alex came first in the Long Jump and second in the 100m and Abbie came first in the

Senior Girls 1500m. Alex will now go on to represent Warwickshire in the Mason Trophy

at the Alexander Stadium on Saturday. Well done all of you for such a fantastic

achievement.

South Warwickshire School Games

On Tuesday 4th June Year 9 Tennis Leaders had a great day of Mini Tennis in the South

Warwickshire School Games, held at Henley in Arden Tennis Club. They were superb and

we were lucky that the weather was kind to us. Thank you to Neil at Coolsportz UK for

making the day run so smoothly.

Cricket

On Thursday 6th June our Year 9 cricket team played away against Shipston High School,

setting themselves a target of 179. This proved to be too much for the hosts with Kineton

securing a fantastic win in a super match played in great spirits. Players of the match:

Women’s Tour of Britain

On Thursday 13th five A level PE students worked as volunteers at the Ovo Women’s Tour

of Britain in Warwick. The students gained valuable knowledge linked to their studies

regarding National Competitions and teams competing as corporations. Their role on the

day gave them an opportunity to investigate the lives of professional athletes in

preparation for competitions, experiencing organisation and pre competition routines.

Prior to the race the students also had to escort a group of young riders for the prerace

ride out with local cycling clubs. Once their role was complete the students then went to

the finish of the race at Burton Dassett Country Park to watch the climax to the event.

Kineton Music Festival - June 22nd 2019

Many of our families and youngsters will be enjoying the festival next weekend and we

From September 2019, all schools across Warwickshire will be using photo card bus

passes. If your child is likely to be travelling on WCC transport for the 2019/2020

academic year, WCC will need a photo for their new style bus pass. Please see the letter

below for further details.

From September 2019, all schools across Warwickshire will be using photo card bus passes. If your Child is likely to be

travelling on WCC transport for the 2019/2020 academic year, we will need a photo for their new style bus pass.

In order to ensure all photos are collected in time for the next academic year and to avoid any delays, we are writing to all

those who are likely to be affected, by area, on a rolling basis.

You can email the photo of your Child to busservices@warwickshire.gov.uk using “Bus Pass Photo 2019” as the subject line

including your child’s name and date of birth with the photo. Please be advised that, although the Council’s email address is a

secure one, this method may not be secure depending on your email provider. Further details on how to send in your photo

securely are set out overleaf.

A guide to taking a passport style photo is also attached overleaf for your information.

To avoid any delay in getting your pass printed next year, please send a photo to us as soon as possible.

If you are changing school, moving house, purchase a pass under the Vacant Seat Scheme, or re-apply for free transport on an

annual basis, you will still need to do so in the normal manner once you have received correspondence from the Education

Transport Team during the spring 2019 term.

If a student will not be present during

morning registration due to a medical/dental

appointment, please provide Student Services with

written notice of the appointment prior to the event.

Student Absence Procedure

If a student is absent, please call the 24 hour Absence

Line daily on 01926 645 611 and leave a brief message

stating their name, tutor group and reason.

Failure to make an application for leave in advance can

also result in a Fixed Penalty Notice being issued to the

parent(s).

Unauthorised Absence

There are times when children are absent for reasons,

which are not permitted by law. Examples of

unauthorised absence are parental illness, term time

holidays or a family day out. Where there is no

explanation for an absence or where the explanation or

reason for the absence is considered unsatisfactory

absence will be recorded as ‘unauthorised’.

Unauthorised Absences have to be reported to the

Local Authority. The Attendance Compliance

Enforcement Team may contact you where

unauthorised absence continues to be a problem.

Unauthorised absence could result in a Fixed Penalty

Fine or other legal action. We are always concerned

about the amount of school time pupils miss as a result

of term time leave. There is no entitlement to time off

during term time. Leave of absence is only granted in

exceptional circumstances at the discretion of the

Headteacher in accordance with the school policy as

agreed by the governing body.

We greatly appreciate parental support to reduce the total amount of days lost due to holidays. We are committed to working in partnership with you to enable your child to reach their academic targets and to support their social development. For this to happen we need to keep individual attendance as high as possible - we all need to play our part. It is our policy:

Only in an exceptional circumstance will term time

leave be allowed. Parents/Carers wishing to apply for

leave of absence need to fill in an application form well

in advance and before booking tickets or making travel

arrangements.

If term time leave is taken without prior permission

from the school, the absence will be unauthorised and

you may be liable for a fixed-penalty fine or other legal

action.

Please remember that absence for whatever reason

disadvantages a child by creating gaps in his/her

learning. A good understanding of the work and good

progress can only take place when the child is in the

classroom regularly and on time.

If you think you have exceptional circumstances please talk to us without delay and before arrangements are entered into or money committed. If exceptional circumstances are accepted the Headteacher will determine how much absence will be authorised. Each application for a leave of absence will be considered on a case by case basis and on its own merits. Leave of Absence

During Term Time 2018-19 The Supreme Court recently reached a decision in the

case of Platt v Isle of Wight Council which has clarified

the law on unauthorised leave, including holidays,

during term time. The parents of children of compulsory

school age are required to ensure that they attend

school on a regular basis. The Supreme Court has

made clear that attending school ‘regularly’ means that

the children must attend school on every day that they

are required to do so. As such, the parents of any child

who is absent from school without authorisation for any

length of time are likely to be considered as committing

an offence under s444 of the Education Act 1996.

Head Teachers retain the ability to authorise leave in

accordance with the Education (Pupil Registration)

(England) Regulations 2006. When considering such

requests for a leave of absence, the school are obliged

to act within the law. Head Teachers may not grant any

leave of absence during term time unless there are

exceptional circumstances relating to the application. If

the leave is granted, head teachers are able to

determine the number of school days a child can be

absent for.

It is for the Head Teacher to decide what is

‘exceptional’ and it is at their discretion if the

circumstances warrant the leave to be granted. The

school can only consider Leave of Absence requests

which are made by the ‘resident’ parent.

Each application for a leave of absence will be

considered on a case by case basis and on its own

merits.

Where applications for leave of absence are made in

advance and refused, the child will be required to be in

school on the dates set out in the application. If the

child is absent during that period, it will be recorded as

an unauthorised absence, which may result in legal

action being taken against the parent(s), by way of a

Fixed Penalty Notice.

All matters of unauthorised absence relating to a Leave

of Absence will be referred to the Warwickshire

Attendance Service, part of Warwickshire County

Council.

It is important to note, Fixed Penalty Notices are

issued to each parent of each absent child, (for

example 2 children and 2 parents, means each parent

will receive 2 invoices in the amount of £120 each,

totalling £240 for both children, this is reduced to £60

per child if paid within 21 days).

Where a Fixed Penalty Notice is not paid within the

required timeframe as set out on the notice, the matter

will be referred to Warwickshire County Council’s Legal

Services to consider instigating criminal proceedings

under S444 Education Act 1996.

Fixed Penalty Notices are issued in accordance with

Warwickshire County Council’s Code of Conduct for

Penalty Notices.

Failure to secure a child’s regular attendance at school may be a criminal offence under Section 444 (1) or 444 (1A) of the

Education Act 1996. If a leave of absence is not authorised this could result in:

The issue of a Fixed Penalty Notice to you (£120.00 fine to be paid within 28 days of issue, which reduces to £60.00 if paid

within 21 days); or

A criminal prosecution against you

Fixed Penalty Notices are issued in respect of EACH absent child as set out in the fixed penalty notice(s).

If the Fixed Penalty is not paid then the matter will be referred to Warwickshire County Council’s legal department to consider

instigating a criminal prosecution against you under the Education Act 1996. If criminal proceedings are issued and you are
