1 Introduction

Overview

The Keysight Technologies N5990A Test Automation Software Platform “ValiFrame” is an open and flexible framework for automating tests of the latest digital bus standards.

This QuickStart guide describes how to configure the Type-C PDO test options in the ValiFrame Rx tests for USB3.1, DisplayPort and Thunderbolt.

The use of the PDOs (Power Data Object) allows the inclusion of different power contracts in the test plan.

The PDO test extension requires the option - 006 “Type-C enabling”. It is a supplement to the standard ValiFrame-USB, ValiFrame-Thunderbolt or ValiFrame-DisplayPort-Module. It only works in conjunction with a basic license for these standards.

NOTEThis document is just a short overview over the PDO test extension. It is not a complete manual for using those applications. For each particular standard, please refer to the following documents:

2 ValiFrame Station Configuration

USB / 8DisplayPort / 9Thunderbolt / 10

Start the Station Configuration of the particular ValiFrame application to choose and connect to the relevant instrument setup.

In the Station Configuration window select the following options for Type-C PDO test support (Refer to Figure 1):

1 Check the option Test Type-C PDOs.

2 Choose a power supply. The main options are:

• N6786A: The N6786A is suitable for testing sink and source up to 20V.

• 5V Power Supply: The simple 5V power supply is just to bring a DUT to work, but not to test any PDOs. It maybe any fixed 5V supply with current capability sufficient for the DUT. The recommended minimum is 500mA.

USB

Figure 1 ValiFrame Station Configuration wizard

To choose the 5V power supply, select None as power supply. In this case, ValiFrame will not try to configure the power supply during the tests (for example, for link training or loop back purposes).

The other options are: E3631A, E363xA, E364xA and N67xx.

For a full featured PDO test of USB Type-C DUT, choose N67xx.

For Thunderbolt, you can choose between Keysight N67xx and a Simple 5V supply (Refer to Figure 3).

For details about the complete setup options, refer to the specific User Guide for each standard.

Remote Instruments Server

The Remote Instruments Server is a host server application. All information needed is packed into an installer. This installer also contains special USB driver libraries as well as the driver for N7018A.

When Type-C PDO testing is enabled, the N7018A Type-C Controller will be included in the Rx setup.

Page 11: Keysight N5990A Type-C Extension

Keysight N5990A Type-C Extension User Guide 11

ValiFrame Station Configuration 2

The Remote Instruments Server is necessary to access the N7018A. It can be installed on any machine with a MS-Windows system like a PC, laptop or a Keysight DSO.

It allows connection via Ethernet to the USB port, where the N7018A is plugged in.

Download it from BitifEye's ftp-site, http://www.bitifeye.com/downloads/RemoteInstrumentsServer_1.6.exe install and run it the first time with admin rights.

If you also want to use the Unigraf AUX channel controller DPT-200 and/or the Artek CLE1000 for DisplayPort-tests, you can access them remotely through this RemoteInstrumentsServer.

Instrument Configuration

The last step of the Station Configuration is the Instrument Configuration. In this step, you have to enter instrument addresses.

For Keysight N7018A, use the address of the machine where the N7018A is connected to.

In the example below, the Remote Instrument Server is installed in the Keysight oscilloscope (Refer to Figure 4):

NOTEThe Remote Instrument Server must be installed in that machine.

If you have connected the N7018A to the same PC where ValiFrame is running, type in the local IP address “127.0.0.1” (Refer to Figure 5).

After the Station is configured, perform the following steps:

1 Open the ValiFrame software of the particular application.

2 From the main window of each active application, click Configure DUT to open the corresponding Configuration Dialog window.

In the Configuration Dialog Window, all test parameters can be configured, including the PDOs and other properties of the DUT's Type-C.

To select the PDOs, perform the following steps (Refer to Figure 6, Figure 7 and Figure 8):

1 In the Station Configuration window, select the Test Type-C PDOs option.

2 In the Configure DUT window, select 3.1 as the Spec Version and Type-C as the connector type.

3 Select ExpertMode and click Parameters

4 In the Common Tab of the Test Parameters Window, select Power Supply as the mode under Power-Automation and Keysight N7015A as the fixture under Type-C.

5 In the Rx Super Speed tab of the Test Parameters Window, set the Loopback Training Method to Warm Reset LTSSM. Setting the Mode under Power Automation to Power Supply and the Method under Loopback Training to WarmResetLTSSM ensures that the DUT is brought into loopback while testing Lane1 and Lane2 in a single (instead of one?) run.

6 Click Select PDOs. Refer to the section “PDO Configuration” on page 21 for more details.

PDO Configuration

In the PDO Selection dialog/section, you can read out the PDOs from the DUT and select such PDOs that must be applied during the RX tests.

Prior to reading the PDOs, it is necessary to configure the power supply. To do so, click Configure Power Supply (Refer to Figure 12).

Figure 12 PDO Power Supply Configuration

• If N67xx is used, the dialog shows the available channel modules of the N67xx frame. Here, you can choose the module to use (Refer to Figure 13).

• In case of a simple 5V power supply, the dialog shows the configured current capability. Here, you can type in the actual current capability of the power supply. For the 5V power supply, you may use a high-power USB plug-in charger (Refer to Figure 13).

3 ValiFrame DUT Configuration

Figure 13 N67xx Power Module Configuration

After you have configured the power supply, click Read the DUT PDOs to query the PDOs from the DUT. The PDO list displays only those PDOs, which can be supported by the currently configured power supply. For example, a consumer PDO 5V/900mA will be not displayed, if your configured power supply is only capable of 5V/500mA. To view unsupported PDOs, uncheck the Only supported PDOs check box.

NOTEYou can only select supported PDOs for tests.

In the same dialog, you can select the configuration channel to CC1 for normal connection orientation and to CC2 for flipped orientation.

If, for some reasons, you want to run tests with flipped SBU-lines, select the Flip SBU-lines check box. The SBU lines are assigned to AUX +/- in Displayport-mode and to LSTX / LSRX in Thunderbolt-mode in the right orientation, taking the CC into account (Refer to Figure 14).
