As we enter the summer season we will also begin a new worship series called It All Belongs to God. My
hope is that we can encourage one another to enjoy a season of gratitude and thanksgiving this summer. As a
way to begin our journey together I am sharing this prayer with you from the Presbyterian Book of Common
Worship.
Each line describes God in a new way, drawing images from scripture and tradition in order to encourage us
to expand the ways we give thanks to God. Perhaps this prayer can be your mantra for the summer, your
daily reminder of God’s glory. I invite you to add lines of your own as you pray. Consider what words and
metaphors you use when you imagine God, and explore what new images connect with your experience. As
we pray together may our experience of God’s grace grow both deep and wide!
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit: Glory to you forever!
Speaker, Word, and Breath of Life: Glory to you forever!
Font of Blessing, Living Water, Flowing River: Glory to you forever!
Compassionate Mother, Beloved Child, Life-Giving Womb: Glory to you forever!
Sun, Light, and Burning Ray: Glory to you forever!
Giver, Gift, and Giving: Glory to you forever!
Lover, Beloved, and Love itself: Glory to you forever!
Rock, Cornerstone, and Temple: Glory to you forever!
Consuming Fire, Dividing Sword, Overpowering Storm: Glory to you forever!
Rainbow of Promise, Ark of Salvation, Dove of Peace: Glory to you forever!
God who was, God who is, God who is to come: Glory to you forever!

Save the Date for Camp Hanover Day Camp
Camp Hanover will bring their traveling day camp to Southminster from July 29 – August 2, 2019. Day
camp is open to all children entering K – 6th grades; neighbors, friends, and visitors are welcome. Camp
will be held in the Fellowship Hall and on the church grounds, and will run from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
While Southminster provides the space, Camp Hanover will provide experienced camp counselors who will
conduct the daily activities.
The cost of camp is $150 for the week, per child. Scholarships are available. If cost is a burden, or if you
have questions or need more information regarding Day Camp, please contact Sue Rhodes
at [email protected] or (804) 639-1096. Registration is now open, and new registrations will be taken
through July 1st for paper registrations and through July 19th for online registrations. Register for camp
today online at www.camphanover.org/southminster19 or look for registration forms in the Narthex.
Bible Fun Week for Toddlers & Preschoolers
During the week of Day Camp, July 29 – August 2, we will offer a special program of Bible stories and fun
activities for toddlers and preschoolers. The toddler program will run form 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM. Parents

Sign up sheets for participants and volunteers are available in the Narthex. If we have a need, a nursery will
be provided. For more information or to volunteer, contact Laura Pearson at [email protected] or
804-387-3913.

IPCN Renovations
Our sister church, Iglesia Pentecostal Cantico
Nuevo (IPCN) is growing! After three years of
meeting in the lower level of our church building,
IPCN has grown enough that they need more space
for their worship. Over the last month they have
been doing renovations, taking down several walls
to turn unused classrooms into a larger worship
space. Thanks to all of the Southminster members
who offered their support to Pastor Mario during
the planning and execution of this project: Brown
Pearson, Chuck Greenberg, Andrew Swenck,
James Deyerle, Eddie Pearson, Jerry Davis and
David Huff.
Southminster Scholarship
The youth and young adults in our congregation have been blessed by the generosity of former members
who setup endowments in their estate planning documents or in honor of loved ones, as well as current
members who contribute to the Scholarship Fund. The last few years, the Scholarship Committee has
reviewed applications and distributed more than $20,000 each year to eligible college students.
Applications and scholarship guidelines are available in the Narthex and the church office. Applicants must
be confirmed members of Southminster and attend at least two worship services or church-sponsored events
each year. Please mail scholarship applications to the church or leave in the office manager’s mailbox.
Scholarship applications must be received by the church office by June 15, 2019.
Kitty Bice, Moderator of the Scholarship Committee
Wills & Bequests
What if you could change a life? Impact a community? Make a difference for the future? You can! One
way is to make a will that provides for your family and your faith community. Having a bequest as part of
your will is a way to gift personal property. A bequest can speak into the future of the church and its mission
by: Educating children and youth, supporting existing ministries, creating new programs, strengthening local
outreach and missions, and meeting future physical needs of the church property.
Some myths to dispel: You do not have to be wealthy to leave a meaningful bequest. Most bequests come
from middle class households. Smaller gifts can be invested to grow over time. Making a bequest is easy
and can be made in any way that best fits you – it can be a dollar amount, a percentage, a remainder amount,
or even assets like property, stocks, artwork and royalties. A simple statement in your will is: “I give and
bequeath the sum of $____ to Southminster Presbyterian Church in Chesterfield, Virginia, USA”. In
closing, here is a quote from Anne Frank; “ How lovely to think no one need wait a moment; we can start
now changing the world.”

Ice Cream Social
This year our popular and free Ice Cream Social will be on Sunday July 14th from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM in
the Fellowship Hall. In addition to serving sweet treats, we offer fun and games. There will be games for all
ages. Younger children enjoy sitting at the small tables and coloring or completing a craft project.
We will need a number of volunteers to help out. We will decorate the Fellowship Hall that Sunday after
worship. Youth Group members are our reliable scoopers but anyone can give it a try! Cleanup should be
quick and completed by 8:30 PM. (Volunteers should arrive at 7:15 PM to help with cleanup.) For more
information or to volunteer, contact Dixie Kovacs at 804-745-0963.
Southminster Garden
Southminster’s garden is now in its fourth year, providing fresh vegetables and herbs for our Food Closet
clients. Since its beginning, the garden has grown from one to four raised beds, growing tomatoes, peppers,
romaine lettuce, collard greens, Swiss chard, oregano, basil, parsley, lavender, chives, and thyme.
The Southminster garden would not be possible without our champion, Lynn Hodges, and the many
volunteers who help water and weed. We encourage everyone to visit the garden to see how it is growing.
The garden is located at the rear of the church near the playground.

Summer Family Devotionals
Looking for a way to help your kids stay engaged with their faith this summer? Feel free to pick up a "Sing!
Play! Summer!" booklet and CD in the narthex! These booklets contain weekly devotions and activities
families can do together, and each week pairs with a song from the CD. We hope these activities will spark
conversations around your dinner table and that you'll play these fun songs in the car on the way to all your
summer adventures!
• Approved the transfer of letter for Terry and Shelley Hamlin to Christiansburg Presbyterian Church
• Approved Marit Smith’s reaffirmation of faith on June 9th along with Andrew’s and Marit’s son,
Hagen’s, baptism.
• Approved Marty Kovacs and Brown Pearson as the Southminster’s representatives at the June
18th Presbytery Meeting in Charlottesville.
• Move to not provide sanctuary flowers during the 11:00 worship service during the summer months,
with the exception of when a family wishes to make as special dedication.
• Received a report from the Finance Committee that income exceeds the budget while expenses are
below budget. This is good news going into the summer months.
Summer Music Sign-Ups
The Southminster choir is taking its regular, well-earned break over the summer. We are inviting musically-
inclined Southminster members, family, and friends to sign up to provide special music for our summer
worship services.
The sign-up sheet is located in the choir room. For additional information, contact Kimberly Ryan at

Notes will be published as space permits. Some notes will carry over to next month’s newsletter.
