August 2015 1 Southminster Presbyterian Church of Springfield, Missouri, is called by God to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ, to minister in love to the needs of members of the congregation and residents of the community, and to promote peace and justice in the world. The dog days of summer are certainly here. My calendar actually has the dog days starting on the 3rd of July. However, I have not seen where they end. I have a calendar that also tells me the best days for fishing, and the times of the day that is perfect. It is a perfect calendar for living on the lake. When we think of calendars, we often think of specific dates that have special meaning to us. This can be a first day of school, for teachers as well as students, birthdays, anniversaries, holidays and other days of significance. In the church, the calendar reflects liturgical scriptures and includes the colors for the season. Presently, we are in the season of ordinary time. This is the longest part of the church year. While it does not seem special, it is significant. It is the time in the church year when we celebrate rebirth (that is why the color is green) and living out our faith. The scripture readings are all about how faith can be renewing, concrete and visible. If you ask me, ordinary time is way more important than we think. If it were not for the ordinary time in our lives, Christ would not be as visible in this world. In the midst of the dog days of summer and in the midst of ordinary time, I challenge you to see how God can work in your lives, through your lives, and through others. It is a chance to better understand the extraordinary in ordinary time. Southminster Presbyterian Church of Springfield, Missouri, is called by God to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ, to minister in love to the needs of members of the congregation

and residents of the community, and to promote peace and justice in the world.

Michael, Congratulations! The General Council voted on July 9, 2015 to grant your request for a Creative Ministry Grant in the amount of $3,900. A check for this amount will be awarded at our August 3rd Presbytery meeting in Crane, MO. One of the requirements for this grant is that you will prepare and present a two to three minute presentation for our Presbytery meeting in May of 2016 as a way to encourage other churches to apply for grants. Thank you for participating in the mission of John Calvin Presbytery. Rev. Susan Rosenbaum Pastoral Presbyter John Calvin Presbytery

YOUTH NEWS! Michael Lyons attended a Youth Activity on July 12th at Woodland Heights Church where about 18 young people from Covenant, Hillcrest, and Woodland Heights churches participated. They enjoyed a taco lunch, team-builder games, brief lesson/devotional, and helped make and fill bags of food for the needy in the area. Michael is also attending a Presbyterian Youth Retreat at the end of July sponsored by Woodland Heights. Jocelyn Bogue is

volunteering to help at the retreat.

Thank you, dear friends, for all the prayers,

cards, phone calls, visits, and other

expressions of concern for us during Don’s

illness. We are part of the best

congregation in the world! Don is getting

stronger but the throat muscles strengthen

very slowly so he still has a ways to go

before he will be able to again participate

in church activities.

With our love, Don & DeAnn

Dear Southminster friends, We appreciate so much your calls, cards and concerns at the difficult time of our daughter Susan's death. Thank you for your compassion and thoughtfulness.

6 August 2015

On June 17, we were all shocked and saddened to hear of the mass shooting at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC. The epidemic

of gun violence in this country continues to take innocent lives day after day. For this month’s Peace Notes I submit a prayer penned by Gradye Parsons. It is a prayer we can all use to respond to this horrific event.

God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, God who has brought us thus far on our way, only you know why someone would enter into your house of worship and open fire on your children. Only you know why hate would run so deep that it would cause one of your creations to kill others you have formed. In our confusion over this senseless act, we appeal to you for understanding and courage to continue to fight for justice. We pray right now for the families of those who lost lives in Charleston, S.C. on June 17, and ask that you would wrap your loving arms around them and the entire community. Likewise, we pray for an end to the continued racial unrest and violence that permeates the United States and the world, and ask you to guide us to work earnestly for change. Now unto you who is able to keep us from falling, we pray all these things. Amen

August is known for being a month without holidays. Well, at least well known holidays. One holiday that I like to celebrate is August 13th - it is International Left Handers Day. Being left handed is one of those things that I am and I embrace. What is a bit interesting for me is that I just found out that the only other left hander in my grade in elementary school is also a pastor. There are a lot of different characteristics that each person can have in common with another person. And there are a lot of differences that we also experience. I believe that God created so many differences so we could compliment each other as we live out our faith. The diversity we have as Presbyterians creates a richness that allows us to do a lot of different things a lot of different ways. This diversity was evident in the Creative Ministry Grants that were approved by General Council in July. These grants will be awarded at the August 3rd meeting of Presbytery in Crane, MO. There are no two grants that are alike and they all show how creative and different we are as people of God. I praise God for the creativeness of our churches and how they choose to serve God in their communities. Seeing God at work in our diversity is something to treasure. Rev.
