Words that end ‘-y’ when there is only one of them, drop the ‘y’ and change to
an ‘-ies’ ending when there is more than one.
Write the correct spelling for when there is more than one of these:

The ‘y’ at the end of the word may make an ‘ee’ sound, but the rule is the same;
for more than one it drops the ‘y’ and changes to ‘ies’

Contracted words (1):
Contracted words are two words pushed together to make one word.
The first word often stays the same when this happened, but letters are
dropped out of the second word. This is shown with an apostrophe.
(1) Dropped ‘a’
Example: I am – I’m (the apostrophe shows that the ‘a' has been dropped from ‘am’)
Task – Write these sentences again on the lines below but swap the underlined words for a
contracted word. They all have an ‘a’ dropped from the second word.

(2) Dropped ‘i’

We often use it before e and i too, but not always.

Soft g
Sometimes a ‘g’ can make the same sound as a ‘j’, if it goes before an e, y or i.
All these words have a soft g in them. Have a go at spelling them and using them
in the sentence:

-dge At the end of a word, -dge can make a ‘j’ sound.
We use the -dge pattern after a short vowel (a,e,i,o,u) sound.

-ge At the end of a word, -ge can make a ‘j’ sound.
We use the -ge pattern after a consonant (not a vowel) or a long vowel (a,e,i,o,u)
sound.
All these words have -ge at the end of them. Have a go at spelling them and

Contracted words revisited:
The word ‘will’ can also be contracted by dropping the ‘wi’ part of the
word. An apostrophe shows where the dropped letters went.
I will – I’ll (apostrophe where the ‘wi’ have been dropped)
Swap the underlined words in these sentences for a contracted word:

Often, but not always, we double the consonant that goes before this
pattern.

Some words end in -el to make the same sound as the -le ending.
You won’t see the ‘-el’ ending quite as much as ‘-le’.
