I/GCSE, 14-16 Education

• International General Certificate of Secondary Education.

• (The old O Levels!)

• Universally recognised.

• Recognised in EU as equivalent to national matriculation qualifications, (International Baccalaureate MYP).

What are I/GCSE courses?

• Taken in over 125 countries with a choice of over 60 subjects.

• Challenging and rigorous.

• Allow for breadth of study and specialisation.

• Natural progression onto A levels.

• 2 year courses over years 10 & 11.

• Can be coursework or examination only based.

Our I/GCSE courses

• We offer a range of 4 ‘Compulsory’ subjects

and 4 ‘Option’ subjects.

• A total of 10 examinations can be gained.

• Graded A* - U.

• A* to C, seen as ‘good’ pass marks.

Progression to Sixth Form& A levels

• Students need to achieve 5, A* to C grades.

• English & Maths are expected to be passed at C or above and are required for AS/A2 Levels.

• For progression onto an AS Level course students are expected to achieve a grade A or B in that subject.

• Entry could require 4 grade B’s plus English & maths.

Transition Management KS3/4

• This evening: Help and guidance to select the right option subjects. Staff and students are here to discuss with students and parents the suitability of the option subjects chosen.

• Taster lesson week: 9th – 13th March, year 9 students will be given a timetable of taster lessons to choose from. These will be double lessons looking at syllabi, schemes of work, past exam papers and work by the current i/GCSE students.

• Curriculum guides: available to view on the schools website and download from the parent portal.

• September 2015: Early identification of any issues.

• Progress check in the first ½ term. Parent calls and emails.

• Up until October ½ term to change options. Time to reflect and decide if the course is suitable.

Academic Monitoring

• Guidance to choice of courses and settling in period.

• Target setting – Yellis.

• Tutor time.

• Support programme for students under-performing.

• Regular assessment and reporting.

• Provision for AG&T.

• Mock exams.

Courses for September 2015

Compulsory subjects

• English language and literature.

• Mathematics.

• Science (double award).

• A core language. (French OR German).

• Physical Education. (not examined).

• SMSC. (not examined).


Compulsory subjects.

English language and literature.

• IGCSE with Cambridge International Examinations.• These run together and 2 x I/GCSEs are awarded. • IGCSE English Language and IGCSE English Literature

are taught within the same timetable slot.

• Some non native English speakers will do IGCSE English Language only and not IGCSE English Literature. This constitutes just one IGCSE.



Mathematics.

• All students will take a GCSE (or IGCSE) in Mathematics.

• Students will take either the foundation or higher paper.

• The higher paper will allow progression onto the AS/A2 courses.

• The top set will do an additional Mathematics qualification at IGCSE level – Further Mathematics.



Science – double award.

• Students take the IGCSE double award in Science.• The course includes Biology, Chemistry & Physics components.

• The double award is worth 2 x IGCSEs.• Students will take either the core or the extended paper.• The extended double award enables students to progress onto any (or

all) of the sciences AS/A2 level.

• Majority of English schools offer the double award.• Students will be taught the 3 disciplines of Biology, Chemistry & Physics

by specialised teachers.



Languages.

• One CORE language or ASDAN has to be taken.

• German is also offered as an option for students wishing to study both languages.

• Students wanting to take both languages would select French as their core language.


Compulsory subjects - ASDAN CoPE level 2

(The Certificate of Personal Effectiveness).

Qualification at Levels 1 & 2, widely used by mainstream establishments for students aged 13-16, within an option system.

Approximately 120 hours of work is expected for this GCSE-sized qualification.

If the students folder of evidence gains a PASS grade it is the equivalent of a B grade at GCSE


Compulsory subjects - ASDAN - CoPE level 2

By building up a Portfolio of Evidence as they complete the various challenges, students develop their skills in the six CoPE units.

Compulsory subjects - ASDAN - CoPE level 2

Students select a number of challenges from the CoPE Levels 1 & 2 student book. The challenges are split into 12 modules:

• Communication• Citizenship and Community• Sport and Leisure• Independent Living• The Environment• Vocational and Diploma Preparation• Health and Fitness• Work Related Learning and Enterprise• Science and Technology• International Links• Expressive Arts• Beliefs and Values



Not examined.

• Physical Education. (PE).

• SMSC, a tutorial package that includes:Spiritual, Moral, Social & Cultural education. Inspiring futures. Careers Guidance & Study Skills. Assemblies & guest speakers.


Option courses

• A choice of 4 out of 12 possible subject areas.

• The opportunity to study both French & German.

• 5 humanities subjects offered.

• 5 arts subjects offered.

Study Skills (new for 2015/16)

A small number of students will be offered a reduced programme of study that enables them to choose 3 option subjects rather then 4.

For 3 periods per week they will meet with Mrs Charlton, the secondary SENCO for study skills sessions.

This individually tailored programme will cover the following:

• Understanding exam questioning and answering techniques.

• Essay structuring.

• Research and revision skills and techniques.

• Organisation and time management skills.

Entry Requirements

• You have a strong interest in the subject.

• You are good at it and committed to improvement.

• It is required for A Level, then the university course you want to follow.

• If you already know what or where you want to study after A Levels, it is a good idea to look up the websites of the universities to see if they require certain subjects.

• NOT because your friends are doing it, you like the teacher or think its an ‘easy’ option.
