Benefits of lesson planning for teaching and learning
Good lesson plans can benefit teaching and learning by: ensuring that the lesson has a clear structure (beginning,
middle, end) shifting the emphasis of lessons away from what pupils do to
what they learn and how they learn defining precise learning objectives for pupils in terms of:
– knowledge (to know that…)– skills (to be able to…)– understanding (to understand how/why…)– attitudes and values (to be aware of…)
identifying Framework objectives to be addressed in the lesson ensuring that the teaching sequence addresses the learning
objectives

Good lesson plans can benefit teaching and learning by:
ensuring that lessons build on previous learning
helping teachers to work at an appropriate pace throughout the lesson
ensuring that discerning use is made of the textbook
making explicit any teaching strategies (e.g. modelling, questioning) that will play an important part in the lesson
ensuring that homework is planned
