RACHELLE PRICE NAMED STAR COURIER’S TEACHER OF THE YEAR

Pricestartedhercareer16yearsagoasakindergartenteach-erfortheKewaneeSchoolDistrict.ShetaughtfortwoyearsatCentralSchoolandthenrelocatedtoBelle,whereshehascontinuedtoteachkindergartners. PricewasnominatedfortheawardbykindergartenstudentLincolnThroneburg,whosubmittedaletterwritteninpenciltotheStarCourier. “Sheisthebestteacherintheworld.Sheteachesgoodmathandshetellsfunnyjokes.Iamhappythatsheismyteacher,”Lincolnwrote. BelleAlexanderprincipalJasonStablersaidtheawardwas“welldeserved.”“Mrs.Priceisawonderfulteacherandsheexempli-fiesanoverallattitudeofpositivity,”Stablersaid.

DR. BRANDON BOCKEWITZ ‘98 NAMED ‘LEADER
UNDER 40’ IN PEORIA, IL
Dr.BrandonM.Bockewitz,isafamilymedicinephysicianwithaspecialtyinsportsmedicineatUnityPointHealth–Peoria. Inadditiontotraditionalfamilymedicinecare,heprovidesmusculoskeletalandnonsurgicalorthopediccareforawiderangeofconditions. Forfiveyears,Dr.BockewitzhasvolunteeredasateamphysicianforStarkCountyHighSchool,providingon-sitemedicalcoverageatfootballgames and helping to develop a concussionoversightprogram. Whenaskedtohelppro-videmedicalcoverageforfootballgamesatRobertMorrisUniver-sity,heandtheathletictrainersaw an opportunity to do even morebydevelopingaweeklyath-letictrainingroom.Inadditiontoon-sitecoverageatgames,theynow treat sports-related issues through this training room. Overthepastsixyears,Dr.Bockewitzhasworkedwitharangeofmedicalstudentsandresidents,usinghisexpertiseinsportsmedicinetohelpdevelopthenextgenerationofhealthcareproviders.
KHS COUNSELOR MISSY VAIL-FRAKES IS AWARDED 2017 MASTER TEACHER AWARD

KewaneeHighSchoolCounselorMissyVail-Frakeswashonored along with fourteen otherareaeducatorsatthe2017MasterTeachersInductionCeremony on May 4. The awards are sponsored annually by the Dispatch/Argusnewspaper. TheMasterTeacherrecog-nition event began in 1991, and hasrecognizedmorethan420ofthearea’sbesteducatorsfortheirserviceanddedication. Inadditiontohercount-less hours spent in support of KHS students, Missy is mom to Ava, Mya and Emerson. She and herhusbandJamesresideinWoodhull,IL.Inher“freetime”,Missycontinuestoperformhercountrymusicatvariousvenuesthroughout the state.
SILVER LINING IN CHAMPAIGN FOR KHS WRESTLER
To be the best, Kewanee’s Lewis Robinson had to beat the best. TheKHSjuniorfacedanundefeated,defendingstatecham-pion—NolanBakerofByron—inthe145-poundchampionshipmatchat the Class 1A state wrestling tournament. RobinsonhungwithBakerearlyinthematch,buttheByronseniorexecutedahiptossandpinnedRobinson58secondsintothetitle bout at the State Farm Center in Champaign. Robinson trailed 3-2 whenBakerturnedthetossintoastatetitlewinningpin. “Iwastryingtostickwithit,'Robinsonsaidofhissilvermedalfinish.'Mygoalwastolastlongerthananybodythathaseverwrestledhim.Iwastryingtogointoovertimeandprobablywinit,butIknowhe'sreallygood.” Robinsonfinishedtheseasonat40-5andbecomesthethirdKewaneeHighSchoolwrestlertoearn40winsinaseasonjoiningMarkBreedloveandMattJenkin.

KHS TO STATE - AGAIN!
TheKewaneeHighSchoolGroupInterpretationteamplacedsecondattheIHSASectionalinSterlingandadvancedtostatecompetition.Seventeenmem-bers performed "Mean Girls" at theStudioTheaterattheUniver-sityofIllinois-Springfield. This is the twelfth time in asmanyyearsthattheKHSGIteam has earned a spot at state competition,earningthetitleofSectionalChampionthreetimes.TheteamisdirectedbyHeatherOlalde. Five KHS performers were chosenfortheAll-SectionalCast:AllyKubiak,ZoeyMurphy,ConnerDeVilder,LizzyGustafsonand Myles Taylor. LINDSAY STALZER INDUCTED INTO BRADLEY
UNIVERSITY ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME
InductiontotheBradleyAthleticsHallofFameshockedLindsayStalzer. Buthershockwasn'tbornoffalsehumility.Whenyourcol-legecareerincludesstatsandaccomplishmentsrarelyachievedinschoolhistoryandarefollowedbyasolidprofessionalcareer,youknowtheHallwillcallsomeday. Someday,whenyou'reold. 'Wow,'Stalzersaid.'I'mthatold.' Eleven years after setting schoolandMissouriValleyCon-ferencerecordsforkillsinavol-leyballcareer—recordsthatstillstand—Stalzerhasmadeaniceliving playing overseas. Eleven teamsinninecountries,andherprodaysaren'toveryet.She'llbeheadingtoplayinIndonesiasoon. Hard to believe the Ke-wanee native has been gone from Bradley so long. Harder to believe thattheBraveshaven'tpostedawinningrecordsincesheplayedfor them.
KHS CLASS RECEIVES FOOD HANDLER CERTIFICATION
FREYA BLOCK ENDS COLLEGE ATHLETIC CAREER AS HAMMER THROW ALL-AMERICAN
FreyaBlockputthefinishingtouchesonaterrificseniorcam-paignatthe2017NCAAOutdoorTrackandFieldChampionships,asshethrew211'-10"(64.56m)onherthirdattempttotakehomeanAll-American7thplacefinishinthewomen'shammerthrow. Blockopenedherserieswitharespectabletossof204'5"(62.30m),whichputherin10thafterfirstattempts.Withthetopnineadvancingtothefinals,theNeponset,ILnativefellto14thaftershefailedtoimproveonhersecondtoss.Thenervesofcompetingatherfirstnationalmeetfinallysettledandthetwo-timeMVCChampiondialedupathrowof211'-10"(64.56m)tomoveontothefinalsandeventuallyplace7th. BlockbecameSIU's13thAll-Americanall-timeinthewomen'shammerthrow,whichtiesSouthernIllinoiswithSouthernCaliforniaforthemostall-time.Block'stwoteampointsgrewSIU'sall-timepointslead in the event. Thewalk-onthrowerfromKewaneeHighSchoolisSIU's163rdAll-Americanall-time.

KHSBoy’sBasketballcoachShauneLewiswasoneofthreeareahighschoolbasketballcoachestoreceivetheIllinoisBasketballCoachesAssociationDistrictCoachoftheYearhonorsattheIBCA’sHallofFamebanquetMay6atIllinoisStateUniversity’sRedbirdArena.ThiswasShaune’sfirstIBCACoachoftheYearaward.
KHS STUDENTS RECEIVE FOOD HANDLER CERTIFICATION
KewaneeHighSchoolFoodsclasspassedafoodhandlercer-tificationclassandarenowcertifiedthroughtheHenry/StarkCountyHealthDepartment.Forty-twostudentsparticipatedinaweeklongcourseadministeredbyDorothyDavidofthehealthdepartment.Thestudents passed the required test and now own a food handlerlicensethatemployeesmusthavetoworkinafoodestablishment.TheprogramwaspaidforbyKewaneeMcDonald’sowners,DennisandTrinaGendron,whocontributedthe$15.00perstudentfee.“Thiswasawonderfulcollaborationofacommunityleader,stateagencyandschoolsystemthatwillbenefitthestudentswithin-creasedemploymentopportunities,”saidStephanieJohnson,HomeEconomicsteacheratKewaneeHighSchool.
KHS BAND MEMBER PERFORMED WITH NAVY BAND
Katrina“Kat”Wolf,abassoonistinthehightschoolband,wasoneoftenQuadCityareamusiciansselectedtoperformwiththeUnitedStatesNavyConcertBandatAugustanaCollegeinRockIsland. ThebandhasplayedforaQuadCitiesaudiencemanytimes,andtraditionallyinvitesareastudentstojointheminperformingJohnPhilipSousa’s“WashingtonPost”marchattheirconcerts. Thisyear,tenstudentsfromtheQuadCitiesareahighschoolswere invited to play. Directorsfromeachschoolselectedsuperiorplayersfromtheirbands. KewaneeHighSchoolbanddirectorAlexBineknominatedMissWolf.
STUDENTS COMBINE MUSIC AND ART TO BRING
ATTENTION TO REFUGEE CRISIS IN SYRIA
Thehighschoolbandandchoir,alongwithartstudents,puttogetheravideo.Themusicistitled“PrayeroftheChildren.” ChoirandBandDirectorAlexBinekalongwithArtTeacherMarcNelson,workedontheproj-ectformonths. Thestudent’sartdepictschildreninthewartorncoun-try. The animation is done in charcoal.Thevideodepictsthejourneyoffivefictionalchildrensurviving the horrors of the Syrian civilwar. Itisanefforttoexpresscompassion,concernandtoraiseawarenessaboutthemanychil-dren and adults who have died orbeendisplacedbecauseofthewar in Syria. Thesong“PrayeroftheChildren”wasinspiredbythestrugglesofchildreninwartornYugoslaviainthe90’s.Listentothechildren.Payattention.AreminderfromkidsinKewaneetopeople the world over. MAJ. JIM GOLBY ‘96 SERVED ON THE VICE PRESIDENT’S NATIONAL SECURITY STAFF

VicePresidentJoeBidenhaslefttheWhiteHouse.Butamemberofhisstaff,ArmyMaj.JimGolby,stayed on with the new administration for a few months. Golby,aKewaneenative,hasbeenonBiden’snationalsecurityaffairsstaffforthepast13months.“I’manonpartisanmilitaryofficer,”hesaid,sohe’llstayonduringthetransitiontotheTrumpadministra-tion,andserveonVicePresidentMikePence’snationalsecuritystaff. Thissummer,heandhisfamilywillmovetoBrussels,wherehewillbeaDefensePolicyAdviserforNATO. WorkingonBiden’sstaffhastakenGolbyalloverthecountry,andallovertheworld.Heaccompa-niedthevicepresidentontripstoIraqandTurkey,forexample.Inhisstaffposition,Golbywouldattendmeetingswiththevicepresidenttwoorthreetimesaweek.HepreparedBidenforNationalSecurtyCoun-cilmeetings,andattendedmeetingsintheSituationRoomattheWhiteHouse. He’salsosatinonafewmeetingswithPresidentBarackObama.Golbysaidhisareasofconcen-trationhavebeenIraqandnuclearpolicy. OneofthehighlightsofhistimeattheWhiteHousecamewhentheworldchampionChicagoCubsvisitedtoreceiveofficialcongratulationsfromObama.Golbysaidhe’sbeena“hugeCubsfan”sincehewas4or5. GolbyisthesonofJimandAliceAnnGolbyofKewanee,anda1996KewaneeHighSchoolgradu-ate.HeisaWestPointgraduate,andsaidthatforthefirstnineyearsofhisArmycareerhewasanarmorofficer.HeservedtwotoursinIraqbetween2004and2007,andafterhisseconddeploymentheappliedforafacultypositionatWestPoint.Hewasaccepted,butfirsttheArmysenthimtoStanfordUniversity,whereheearnedadoctorateinpoliticalscience. ThenextstepinGolby’scareerwasastintasaspecialassistanttotheChairmanoftheJointChiefsof Staff. Then he applied for a fellowship that would put him in a non-traditional job out of uniform. UsuallythosejobsarewiththeSenateForeignRelationsCommitteeortheStateDepartment,hesaid,buttherewasanopeningonthevicepresident’sstaff,andthat’swhereheendedup. Golby,hiswifeKristenandtheirfivechildrenliveinAlexandria,VA,andthey’relookingforwardtomovingtoEurope.“MywifeandIalwayswantedforthekidstoexperienceEuropebeforetheyreachedhighschoolage,”hesaid. GolbyhastherankofMajornow,buthispromotiontoLieutenantColonelshouldcomethroughthisspring, he said.
