Director’s Note

Mary Poppins first flew into the Banks household and lives of families around the world in 1934 as the title character in P.L. Travers’ first novel. Between 1935-1988, six subsequent books, including Mary Poppins Comes Back, Mary Poppins in the Park, and Mary Poppins in Cherry Tree Lane, continued the eclectic adventures for Jane and Michael with the “practically perfect” nanny and built on the popular success of the original book. In 1964 the Oscar nominated Disney film adaptation hit the screen, winning special acclaim for the music and actress Julie Andrews’ film debut as the leading lady. Forty years later Cameron Mackintosh mounted the stage adaptation which enjoyed a successful London run, multiple national and international tours, and opened on Broadway in 2006. Nominated for seven Tony awards and winning for “Best Scenic Design,” the stage musical shared much of the celebration awarded the 1964 film and recreated several of the film’s iconic moments. However, though the movie and stage productions share the same source material, Mary Poppins and Mary Poppins Comes Back (Travers’ first two books), and much of the same music, the shows are notably different. Due to explicit directions from the fastidious author Travers, who fought much of the original Disney interpretation, production rights for the stage show were granted on several specific conditions which led the stage musical to tie more closely to the novels and develop several characters and songs not included in the film. Though potentially a disappointment and surprise to “die hard fans” of the movie, who dote on Julie Andrews as Mary, the antics of Dick Van Dyke as Bert, and singing Penguins in “Jolly Holiday”, the stage production offers similar spectacle, magic and warmth as the film, and augments the passion and significance of some characters, notably Mrs. Banks.

As a devout Julie Andrews fan, and one who knew the film soundtrack by heart before starting kindergarten, I was one of those initially disenchanted by the stage musical because it didn’t fit with my movie induced Mary Poppins paradigm. However, after further review and research, I’ve developed a greater appreciation for each derivation of the most famous British nanny and her varying companions, and her creator, P.L. Travers. Many members of our company agree that studying Travers’ arduous young life in Australia, her love of mythology, her battles with Walt Disney, and the other Mary Poppins books alongside our production work has been a highlight of working on this show and enriched our finished product. Our top picks for audience members interested in more of the back story and whether or not Mary Poppins really is “practically perfect,” include Saving Mr. Banks (Disney Productions 2013), Mary Poppins She Wrote: the Life of P.L. Travers by Valerie Lawson (Simon & Schuster 1999), P.L. Travers: The Real Mary Poppins (Australian Documentary available on Youtube), and (of course) reading any of the original books.

Producing Mary Poppins stands out among recent Summer Academy productions for the technical and other production values necessary to capture the spectacle and magic given by P.L Travers & Walt Disney. It has been many years since our company of students has tackled a show requiring so many special effects, complicated sets, and multiple elaborate costume changes per cast member. Moreover, the score is complex for actors and instrumentalists alike, and we have an overall much younger and less experienced group of students working on the show this summer. And have you heard about the flying? (First time in KM history!) Despite these extra challenges, new and veteran students alike have pushed through an intense four weeks of rehearsal to bring you a show that is truly supercalifragilisticexpialidocious from the first spoonful of sugar to the final kite flying. Special thanks to each one of them and all their families for supporting the process!

As the producing director who has the charge to lead the team of faculty who make the Summer Academy Musical happen this summer, I am especially aware and grateful for each director’s unique talents, care and areas of expertise that make a large Broadway-style show possible in an educational setting. If ever there was a summer we needed a solid team, this was it, and I am especially thankful for the flexibility and collaborative spirit to mount this difficult show. This community is fortunate to consistently have talented people who care so much to share excellence and artistic passion with our students, and it is a pleasure to be a part of the team. Deep appreciation, pride, and respect also goes out to our KM Drama Alums working in paid and volunteer positions on our staff this summer. Thanks to Emily Pfaff and Emily Albrechet (class of 2016), who took care of so many logistical and publicity details, Sommer Olson (Class of 2015) for supporting set construction and sound, and Haley Bohman (Class of 2015) who donated time with costumes. I am so proud we have a program that alumni want to return to work with, and I recognize the alumni leadership as one of the key ingredients that makes our program so strong. (Class of 2016 you are wanted for the future!)

Mary Poppins is a show about looking for the joy in any situation, prioritizing what matters most in life, and reaching past perceived limitations. Thank you for coming. We hope you enjoy your “Jolly Holiday with Mary” and find yourself swept away to places you never dreamed of (even if our tickets are a little more than tuppence. ;-) )

Biographies

Our company includes students from throughout the Kettle Moraine Commu-nity in grades six through the recent graduating class, and with a wide range of experience. In each production area – cast, set/tech crew, costumes and pit orchestra – we have veteran students who have worked on multiple summer musicals, some of whom are taking part in their first dramatic production, and many students who fit somewhere in between. Some students learned their creative skills via private lessons or other community venues, and many were exclusively trained through Kettle Moraine School District programs. The fol-lowing biographies highlight the work and experience of some of our produc-tion’s most prominent “characters.”

Lukas Jaeger- Bert- Graduate Lukas Jaeger has been involved in six theatrical produc-tions on the KMHS stage. He has been heavily involved in KMHS musicals both on-stage and off- as a violinist/violist down in the Pit Orchestra. His most recent role was Sir Harry, Chivalric Knight of the Herald, in KM Per-form’s production of Once Upon a Mattress. Lukas will attend St. Olaf College in the fall to major in music performance. Lukas would like to thank his family and friends for all their support in all of his endeavors over the past four years, Jason Statham, for helping him to learn his cockney accent, and The Dude as well, for showing him the importance of “Takin’ her easy.”

Rachel Ryan- Mary Poppins- GraduateThis is Rachel’s ninth and final production onstage at KMHS, but her 17th show overall. Previous roles include: Kate in Pirates of Penzance, a nun in the Sound of Music, and a cowgirl in Annie Get Your Gun at Wauke-sha Civic Theatre; she is thrilled to be playing the role of Mary Poppins, the iconic, spirited nanny, brought to life onscreen by Julie Andrews, one of Rachel’s many idols, in this year’s summer musical. Rachel has also been involved immensely in backstage production, however being onstage is her true passion and next year Rachel will be at-tending UW-Oshkosh to study communications. She would like to thank her friends and family for their never ending support and love in everything she does.

Noel Cramer- George Banks- JuniorThis is Noel’s seventh show on the KM Stage. Most re-cently he was in Arsenic and Old Lace as Teddy Brewster, and he was in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe as Edmund Pevensie. He is looking forward to playing the character of George Banks this summer. He would like to thank his friends and family for supporting him in his theatrical endeavors.

Kate Ferguson- Winifred Banks- SeniorThis is Kate’s twelfth KM Drama club show, most recently playing Abby Brewster in Arsenic and Old Lace, being the right wing manager for Once Upon a Mattress, and playing Susan Pevensie in The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. She is very excited to be playing Winifred Banks, an intelligent woman who learns about being a wife and mother from Mary Poppins. Kate would like to thank, as usual, her best friends Ella, John, and Cas, her family, the directors, and Matt Hawk for supporting her love for theater.

Spencer Steele- Jane Banks- 8th grade Spencer is ecstatic to step into the role of Jane Banks in Mary Poppins. She would like to thank Ms. Schwingle, Ms. Kean and Haley for all of their hard work! She would also like to thank her family for their love, sup-port and for being such great role models, and her second family, The Tzougros’, for being such an important part of her life! Spencer performs with Main Street Song and Dance Troupe and past credits include, Tinkerbell in Peter Pan Jr., Tessie in Annie Jr., a policeman in Pirates of Penzance, and Arrowhead HS’s A Christmas Carol.

Cas Mayhall- Michael Banks- SeniorThis is Cas’ first time in the summer musical cast and he is pumped to be back onstage after primarily working as a costumer. Cas would like to thank the wonderful direc-tors for their efforts to improve his dance skills.

Alexandra Tzougros- Bird Woman/Miss Andrew/Dance Captain- GraduateThis is Alexandra’s eleventh and last musical on Kettle Moraine stage, having played roles raging from Win-throp Peru as a 6th grader in The Music Man to Princess Winefred as 12th grader in Once Upon A Mattress. She’d like to thank her amazing family for letting her do all the activities she does and being there to support her through everything, her friends for their constant affection, her fellow actors for making every rehearsal awesome, Ms. Kean & Ms. Schwingle & Haley, everyone else that makes this production possible, and finally all of you for coming out to support our show. Enjoy the performance!

She looks forward to directing her own one act, Yet to Come, in the 2016 One Act Festival. Many thanks go to Ms. Schwingle, Ms. Kean, and, of course, Michael Caine, with his unattainable levels of pretension.

Robb Colon- Policeman/Ensemble- JuniorRobb is new to theatre at Kettle Moraine. He served as set crew member for KM Perform’s Once Upon a Mat-tress, and he was Mr. Witherspoon in Arsenic and Old Lace. Robb would thank his family, directors, and other cast mem-bers that he became friends with over the time.

Maddi Racine- Miss Lark/ Valentine- SeniorMaddi has been a part of ten shows at Kettle Moraine High School. Each show has grown her love for theater, and Mary Poppins is no exception. Anna Karius- Mrs. Corry- JuniorAnna has done many musicals at Kettle Moraine in her past. As familiar as she is to the stage itself, the part of Mrs. Corry has been the hardest by far. She would like to thank her supportive family and wonderful friends.

Lauren Gennerman- Head Costumer- SeniorLauren is elated to see Mary Poppins finally come to fruition onstage. Lauren would like to thank her family for dealing with the long hours that come with working on a show, her best friends for consistently providing sources of caffeine, and the exceptional costume crew that worked so hard to make this a success.

Dylan Hoppel- Light Board Operator- JuniorDylan Hoppel is fairly new to tech work, and this is his second show ever. He is very appreciative of everyone who has provided him with opportunities, and looks forward to helping to make this a great show.

Kiara Miller- Right Wing Manager- Junior This is Kiara's tenth show at KM, and her 6th show work-ing crew. You might've seen her working the soundboard for KM Perform's show Once Upon a Mattress. She is very excited for everyone to see all the work that the company has put into Mary Poppins. She would like to thank her amazing family and her fellow cast and crew mates for making this a super interesting experience.

Henning Mahn- Flying System Operator- Junior This is only Henning’s third production at Kettle Mo-raine High School, because he actually attends Brookfield Central High School. At Kettle Moraine he’s partaken in Thoroughly Modern Millie, Curtains and now Mary Poppins; and his numerous Brookfield Central produc-tions include Peter Pan, The Foreigner, Crazy For You, and several more. He’s developed a passion for stage crew and musical theatre and hopes to pursue it as a career in the future. Everyone’s put in a ton of hard work and had a load of fun, so he really hopes you enjoy the show!

Maddie Martin- Spotlight Operator- 8th grade This is Maddie’s second year of working on KM’s summer musical, working on the soundboard the previous year on Pirates of Penzance. She thanks her new friends, family, and crew members for helping her throughout the way. Maddie is also very excited for next year!

Some of her previous shows include Letters to Sala, Pi-rates of Penzance, and The Lion, the Witch, and the Ward-robe. She has always done costuming. This show is by far her favorite show to work on. She would like to thank her mother for driving her to each of the rehearsals, her friends on the costume crew for making the actors look as best as they can, and everyone else involved in making Mary Poppins a success. She hopes that everyone who comes to see the show enjoys watching it as much as she enjoyed working on it.

Kelly Durler- Spotlights- SophomoreThis is Kelly’s 6th show and her 3rd summer musical. This is her favorite musical of all time! She would like to thank her family for dealing with her, during this time. She would also like to thank Ms.Kean, Jacob, and Mr. L, for their long hours, and dedication to this show. She hopes you enjoy Mary Poppins!

Patrick Graham- Pit Orchestra- GraduateThis is Patrick’s 5th time being in a pit orchestra. It's nice that some things never change. Patrick would like to thank Mr. Erickson for four years of incredible instruc-tion. In the fall, he is heading off to MSOE for computer engineering, and will play freelance trombone on the side.

Emily Lazlo- Stage Manager- Graduate For the past 5 years, Emily has been a part of KM’s Drama Club, with her first show being Seussical. Primar-ily working backstage, Emily has explored directing, act-ing, costuming, tech, and set. Over the course of her high school career, Emily has participated in over 15 shows with her 16th being Mary Poppins. Emily has met some of her closest friends in Drama Club, and wants to thank every cast and crew member, as well as all the directors throughout the years for teaching her many valuable les-sons, while being a part of such an amazing experience.

Sommer Olson- Set/Tech Intern- AlumniSommer has just completed her Freshman year as a com-puter engineering student at University of Wisconsin-Madison. This is her 22nd show and she is so excited that she was able to come back and help teach her younger peers. She thoroughly enjoys working backstage and helping the show be the best it can be. Sommer would like to thank her family, friends, and peers for helping her reach this point. Enjoy the show!

Emily Pfaff- Production and Management Intern- GraduateMary Poppins is Emily’s twenty first and final production at Kettle Moraine High School. She can hardly believe that she started with Seussical five years ago. Emily would like to thank the staff, cast, and crew for their hard work on such a challenging production. She would also like to thank Jacob Miner for teaching her everything she knows about tech, and her family for their continued support as she attends Millikin University to study in the BFA Stage Management program.

Emily Albrecht- Company Manager Intern- GraduateEmily was involved in pit orchestra during Kettle Mo-raine’s production of Into the Woods and is one of the three interns for Summer Academy’s Mary Poppins. She is so impressed and proud of all the hard work the actors and crew put in. Emily would like to thank everyone involved in the production as well as her friends and fam-ily. She can’t wait to take what she has learned to UW-Whitewater next year and be involved in more produc-tions in the future! Break a leg!
