Cell phones a curse for many senior citizensSir, It is true that cell phones have come to stay. But there

are many senior citizens who do not own a cell phone due toreasons like inability to master the technology, physicaldisability, eye problems and more.

Most of the essential government services are gettingintegrated with cell phone numbers, while many senior citizensstill depend on landline phones.

Due to this, they have to provide the cell phone numbers oftheir children, friends or neighbours, and then depend on them.

I appeal to the govt. officials not to insist on cell phonenumbers and allow senior citizens to register their landlinenumbers for availing of services. K. Vaidyanathan, GodsendApartments, 15/1, North Usman Road, T. Nagar, Ph 28156891

Water table in city dipsInadequate rainfall and a protracted drought for the past two

years have started impacting the water table in the city.In the study conducted by Rain Center, the city’s water table

dipped on an average by 8 meters during February. Some observation wells like those in Anna Nagar, Choolaimedu

and Vadapalani went dry in February, indicating the dependenceon groundwater sources owing to the reduction in piped watersupply. Many streets in the neighbourhood have stopped receivingpiped water supply and are dependent on supply through watertankers. Residents are tapping groundwater by digging borewellsup to a depth of 150 ft.

Sekar Raghavan (Director, Rain Centre) has advised tapping ofshallow aquifers with open wells if deep borewells fail.

For help, residents can contact Rain Centre in 96770 43869.

Appeal to close pit outside Mambalam Post OfficeSir, The junction of Arya Gowda Road and 3rd Street, where West

Mambalam Post Office is located, is in bad condition.A pit dug in the road margin close to the junction is not visible while

turning into Arya Gowda Road from 3rd Street. It poses a danger to motorists. As the traffic is very heavy at the junction, elderly persons visiting

the post office find it difficult to cross the road. I request Corporationofficials to close the pit and repair the road at the junction for the benefitof the road users.N. Rajagopalan, West Mambalam

Protruding cable at Thambiah Road-Jubilee Roadjunction

Sir, A portion of anunderground cable isprotruding above thesurface in the middle ofthe road at the junctionof Thambiah Road andJubilee Road, WestMambalam in thedirection of Lake ViewRoad.

It is hazardous tomotorists, especially 2-wheeler riders, as theycan trip and fall.

It is also dangerous for pedestrians who cross the road at the junction, especially at night due to poor visibility.

A number of school students and elders cross the junction daily asthere is a school and a park in the vicinity.

I appeal to Corporation officials to relay the cable beneath the roadsurface and level the stretch. S. Chandrasekaran, West Mambalam.

Mambalam Times role laudedSir, It was indeed heartening to read that the move to shift the two

ration shops from Rameswaram Street, T. Nagar to Mambalam HighRoad, more than a kilometer away, has been given up.

The role of Mambalam Times in this crusade by the residents wassignificant and substantial. Extending this thought process further, Iwould like to suggest the following:

I was informed that a copy of Mambalam Times is delivered to all thelocal offices of the civic body every week. The officials of the localCorporation offices must go through Mambalam Times and other localpapers where a number of civil lapses in the local area are highlighted.

It will help them to address the issues at the earliest to help theaggrieved residents.P. K. Subramanian, Aishwarya Apartments,Gandhi Street, T. Nagar, Ph: 98402 93321

Appeal to replace sewage line in Motilal StreetSir, Sewage blocks are happening frequently in the apartment

complex located at 31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar.I appeal to Metrowater officials to find a permanent solution to the

problem. My request is to replace the worn out sewage pipes which were laid

35 years back. V. S. Narayanaswamy, Motilal Street, T. Nagar

Appeal to shift TASMAC shop from Dhandapani StreetSir, I have been appealing to shift the TASMAC shop from

Dhandapani Street, T. Nagar due to the hardship faced by the nearbyresidents and passersby. It is always crowded. Its customers drinkopenly outside the shop and dirty the surrounding by throwing usedplastic cups, empty liqour bottles and urinating in street corners.

There are a number of schools in the vicinity and the students caneasily fall a prey to drinking habit. It is also a security risk for womenand elders who have to pass by the shop on their daily errands. I appealto Chennai Corporation to shift the TASMAC shop from DhandapaniStreet. V. S. Narayanaswamy, Motilal Street, T. Nagar

Delays in correcting voter ID cardSir, Last October, I shifted my residence

from Erikarai Street, West Mambalam to 59/1, Muthalamman Koil Street, WestMambalam.

I then applied for change of address in thevoter ID cards of my family members in thezonal office of Chennai Corporation in ArcotRoad, Kodambakkam.

In the revised voters’ list released on Jan. 31,I found someone else’s name and photo againstmy wife’s voter ID number. Also, my age waswrongly mentioned in the revised list.

I then applied for correction of the same inthe relevant form with the zonal office.

When I visited the E-Seva center in ThambiahRoad, West Mambalam for obtaining the cor-rected voter ID card for my wife, I was told bya staff member that they do not have a printerand have not received instructions to issue

Appeal for traffic signal near Jawahar VidyalayaSir, It is a Herculean task for students of Jawahar Vidyalaya (4th

Avenue, Ashok Nagar) to cross the road after school. The drivers do not stop their vehicles at the pedestrian crossing even

when they see students waiting to cross the road. A small opening hasbeen provided in the central median to cross the road which forces

students to crowd at the central median in the middle of the road asthe space is enough for only two students to pass through at a time.

It is a life threatening situation for the students and the parentsaccompanying them.

I think that a traffic signal, to be operated only during school openingand closing hours, can solve the problem, or at least a traffic policemancan be deployed during the school closing hours to regulate the traffic.Dr. K. R. Chidambarakumarasamy, 40, 53rd Street, Ashok Nagar

Water stagnation in Motilal StreetSir, I appeal to Metrowater and Chennai Corporation to jointly

inspect the permanent water stagnation problem near theautorickshaw stand in Motilal Street, T. Nagar, close to Usman Roadside. I appeal to the officials to replace the damaged pipes which arecausing the water leakage and stagnation in the road. V. S.Narayanaswamy, Motillal Street, T. Nagar
