I see the countless Christmas trees around the world below. With tiny lights, like heaven’s stars, reflecting on the snow. The sight is so spectacular; please wipe away that tear, for I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.I hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear, but the sounds of music can’t compare with the Christmas choir here.I have no words to tell you, the joy their voices bring, for it’s beyond description to hear the angels sing.I know how much you miss me. I see the pain inside your heart, but I am not so far away. We really aren’t apart. So be happy for me, dear ones. You know I hold you dear and be glad I’m spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.I send you each a special gift from my heavenly home above. I send you each a memory of my undying love. After all, “Love” is the gift, more precious than pure gold. It was always most important in the stories Jesus told. Please love and keep each other, as my Father said to do, for I can’t count the blessings or the love He has for each of you.So have a Merry Christmas and wipe away that tear. Remember, I’m spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.

Letter To The EditorLetters To The Editor do not necessarily reflect the view of
The Keota Eagle or its staff.
Dear Community Members, There are things in this world that can never be explained. Last week we were given one more thing, the event surrounding Sandy Hook Elementary School. This senseless tragedy wakes us from our complacent world and reminds us of what’s important. I want to assure the Mid-Prairie and Keota communities that even though you can never be guaran-teed that bad things won’t hap-pen, district employees remain attentive to ensure student safety. Each building has a crisis plan that outlines responsibilities and actions to take in various adverse situations. The recent events have caused discussion among school staff and I am sure ideas were generated on ways to improve the plans. Building meetings have occurred to discuss best ways to talk about the situation with stu-dents while being sensitive to dif-fering parent philosophies about what is appropriate to share. On a more specific note, fol-lowing the Virginia Tech shoot-
ing in 2007, the University of Iowa Public Safety Department held a two-day A.L.I.C.E. (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) intruder training in Iowa City for area law enforce-ment and other interested indi-viduals. We sent current Mid-Prairie High School Teacher Marc Pennington to the training. Marc remains a resource as we continu-ally examine best ways to address situations of conflict. The Sandy Hook teachers and other employees are to be com-mended for the way they faced their situation with courage and professionalism. They have my highest respect. My thoughts and prayers also go out to those affected by this sad and disastrous event. May the peace of this holiday season descend not only upon the Sandy Hook community, but on each one of you and your families.

New Look for 9th HourBy Kolton Greiner In the past couple of weeks, Keota High School has made a few changes involving 9th hour. The first change was more incentives for the students. These incentives apply to the students in good standing. Seniors get to leave on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Juniors get to leave on Wednes-day and Friday. Sophomores and freshmen get to leave on Fridays. Junior high students get a relaxed study hall or go to the gym on Fri-day. Another change is that 9th hour classrooms now have a mixture of grade levels (9-12). In addition, the class sizes have been reduced. This week, I asked three stu-dents and one faculty member how they like the new changes. Jack Eakins said, “I like the new incentives, because it’s more time I don’t have to be in the classroom.” Erin Chalupa told me, “I like the relaxed study hall.” Derek Berg said he likes it be-cause he likes changes. The faculty member I chose was Dan Striegel, who said, “I like it be-cause it allows me more individual time with the students that need help.”
By Kolton Greiner This week on the Keota High School Coaches’ Corner we asked the head coaches of both the boys’ (Coach Dan Stout) and girls’ (Coach Jenny Hobbs) Varsity Bas-ketball programs a series of ques-tions. The following are the ques-tions I asked and their answers.
Q: How do you think the team is doing so far?
Stout: “We’re being very com-petitive.” Hobbs: “Our defense has been outstanding and we’re also get-ting better every game.”
Q: What does the team need to improve on?
Stout: “Three point shooting.” Hobbs: “Offensive execution, but primarily putting the ball in the hoop.”
Q: What are you going to have the team do over
Christmas break? Stout: “Practice, continue add-ing more plays into our offense. We are also scrimmaging Wilton, Lone Tree, and Fairfield.” Hobbs: “Practice, go to a wom-en’s Iowa State basketball game in Ames, eat at Hickory Park, and scrimmage Colo Nesco on our way home. It will be a trip for pleasure and business. Since last publication, the boys recorded one loss at home against Sigourney, with a final score of 51-57, and brought home three wins on the road at EV (63-13), HLV (59-37), and Tri-County (59-36). Their record is currently 5-2. The girls recorded one loss and four wins, with the loss against EV (36-48) and wins against HLV (60-26), Sigourney (37-20), Tri-County (56-17), and WACO (51-25). The girls’ record is currently 5-4.Le Invitamos a la
Senora Atkinson! (Welcome Mrs. Atkinson!)
By: Abby Schulte and Megan Hill Keota High School is proud to in-troduce one of our new teachers this
year, Mrs. Amanda Atkinson. Mrs. Atkinson teaches Spanish I and II at Keota in the morning, and goes over to Sigourney in the afternoon to teach Spanish I, II, III, and IV. She also teaches Spanish III and IV for KHS students over the ICN in the afternoon. Mrs. Atkinson graduated from Simpson College. She moved from Cedar Rapids to Richland in the fall of 2011 with her husband and two-year old daughter, Zoey. Before she came to Keota, she taught Special Ed, pre-kinder-garten through high school Spanish, and she substitute taught many subjects. Mrs. Atkinson’s favorite part about teaching at KHS is the students, because, she says, “They have impressive behavior, attitudes, and effort towards learning Spanish!” We welcome Mrs. Atkinson to KHS and look forward to many years of learning Span-ish with her. Deseamos todo lo mejor a Senora Atkinson en KHS! (We wish Mrs. Atkinson all the best at KHS!)
Gibson’s Grand Am
By Justin Hultman This week’s Junk or Jewel is Shane Gibson’s 2000 Pontiac Grand Am SE. Shane bought this luxurious ride off of Craigslist last Christmas. Gibson loves his ride because it is powerful, yet economi-cal; this is all done with a 2.4 liter four cylinder motor that pushes the top speed of 110 miles per hour. One of his best memories was going to all the away volleyball games this fall. However, the trip to Victor was interesting for Shane, when he about ran someone off the interstate. Shane stated, “I like everything about my car but it doesn’t even come close to an Audi V10.” The only thing that he needs to complete this ride is Boss twelve-inch subwoofers, which he will be receiving from Santa Claus this Christmas.

JUNK OR JEWEL
By Shari Temple On October 20th, 1994, Megan Lynn Olson was brought into this world. Matt and Lori Olson excit-edly welcomed their second child; a baby girl. Her favorite family ac-tivities are going on vacations, four wheeling, and trail riding. She also
enjoys hanging out with her broth-er, Nick, when he comes home. Since she was a child, Megan always saw herself as a cowgirl. Naturally, the best place for a cow-girl is with horses. This past summer she worked for Vernon Hammes, helping him chores and washing the horses. Her most valued pos-sessions are her own three horses: Cheyenne, Bullseye, and Cleo; and her two dogs: Duke and Allie. Megan has had many nicknames through the years, including “Mo,” “Megs,” “Nelly,” “Hagrid,” “Troy,” and “Polamalo.” Her favorite junior high memory is “when we brought swimsuits and soap to track practice and made a slip and slide in the locker room afterwards.” Her best high school memory is “the time we played hide and seek before basketball and Callie, Maitland, Bree and I hid for 45 minutes. We won.”
As Megan grew, so did her list of activities. When she isn’t with the horses, she is very involved and constantly striving to do her best. As a participant in volleyball, basketball, track, softball, Speech, FFA, dance, Pom Squad, soccer, flag football, 4-H, Student Council, National Honor Society, and the school newspaper, Megan is always on the move. But her favorite activ-ity is softball because “I like sliding,” she says. Megan has big plans after high school. She is going to Iowa State University and will be majoring in Marketing and Advertisement to become a Real Estate Agent. In ten years, she pictures herself selling property in a large city in another state. Three things she wants to ac-complish in her lifetime are to trav-el overseas, live in a big city, and see Alcatraz. When Megan leaves KHS, she is
going to miss seeing her friends every day. She wants to be remem-bered as “a happy, nice person.” One thing is for sure, Keota is going to miss such an active member of our community.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: What is the worst Christmas gift you have ever gotten? By Luke Lyle
Keota Activities Director UpdateBy Lisa Brenneman I know many of you will find this hard to believe, but the holiday sea-son somewhat marks the halfway point in the school year. Yes senior parents, whether you are sad or happy, it is reality. I also need to call your attention to the current ath-letic schedules on our website. I do this because many schedules have changed since the beginning of the basketball season. I’m sure many of you have noticed the fluctuation in our schedules and game times. At this point I feel the need to explain why this is happen-ing and why we will continue to ex-perience it. The conference schools, big or small, are seeing fluctuations in the number of athletes each year at all levels. We do whatever we can to set schedules at least a year in ad-vance but this is without knowing how many will go out for each sport at each school. At this time many of the teams, conference and non-conference, don’t have enough to play varsity and JV games. Many also don’t have enough to play two junior high games at the 7th and 8th level. As an Athletic Director it would be easy to just give up the games and not try to find others to replace them, but I don’t feel this is what is best for our Keota athletic programs. I will continue to call other schools that may have the same problem when other schools have to cancel games with us. This can’t be done un-til after the season starts and schools determine how many are out for a sport. As game schedules change, so will start times of games depending on how many games we have sched-uled at that time. I apologize for the confusion that this causes. I also as-sume many of your players probably aren’t running home from practice to inform you of the changes our coaches announce when we adjust. I appreciate the patience as I scram-ble each season to fill our schedules, sometimes on a week by week basis. We are in the process of making our new scheduling system available to all through our website. There are many features that will help clear up confusion. For example, you will be able to register with the system and you will receive automatic notices by email/text when we make a change. This will include all activities at Keota High School and not just athletics. You will also have quick and easy access to the most updated sched-ules because we won’t need to rely on a person to manually enter all the schedules and keep up with the changes. For the time being, PLEASE keep a close eye on the WEBSITE weekly and pay particular attention to start times as well as date changes. Again, I appreciate your patience as we continue to adjust to the changes and needs of our students, parents, employees and community.

A disap-pointing loss at home last Monday to
BGM was remedied with the biggest win of the young season on Tuesday, when the Savages picked up a 57-51 win at confer-ence rival Keota. BGM came to Sigourney on Tuesday and left with a 53-46 win, due to stingy defense and timely 3-point shooting. The Bears were paced by senior guard, Nate Beck. Beck led the team with 18 points and hit a pair of clutch floaters in the second half to keep Sigourney at bay. Beck also went seven-of-ten from the free throw line, including a number in the final minutes to close out the game. Kyle Gritsch and Jake Tibbetts each scored 10 points, while Mayson Sherwood pitched in nine for BGM. Brandon Stuhr and Vaclav Bujnoch got going early on offense for the Savages, as Sigourney took a 10-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. The two senior big men pro-vided nearly all of the offense for the Savages on the night. Bujnoch finished with 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting, while Stuhr scored 16 points on five-of-eight shooting. Bujnoch added a team-high 12 rebounds. The Bears’ defense shut down Sigourney in the second quarter, as BGM out scored the Savages, 10-4, to grab an 18-14 lead at halftime. Both offenses got it in gear in the second half. A Stuhr baby-hook shot with six minutes left in the third tied the game at 22. A minute later, Stuhr grabbed an offen-sive rebound and finished the put-back to cut BGM’s lead to 25-24. The Bears were able to extend their lead to 33-29 late in the
third. With less than a second on the clock in the third, BGM’s Kyle Gritsch drained a ‘3’ at the buzzer off of a catch-and-shoot inbounds play, to give the Bears a seven-point lead. Sigourney climbed back in the game with a 5-0 run to start the fourth period. After a Kyle Ferree free throw, Jackson Davis drove baseline and finished a lay-up. On BGM’s next possession, Bujnoch cor-ralled a rebound off of a miss and went coast-to-coast for the lay in to cut the deficit to two. However, that was as close as the Savages could get. Gritsch hit another ‘3’ with two minutes left, en route to the 53-46 win. Sigourney didn’t wait around to take control of the game on Tuesday at Keota. Allan Denny and Bujnoch each nailed 3-pointers in the first quarter, which paved the way for a 17-9 Sigourney lead after one. The Savages’ lead got to as big as 25-14 in the first half, after Stuhr hit a jumper from the free throw line. Sigourney led, 27-18, at halftime. The Eagles started to claw their way back in the third quar-ter. Back-to-back baskets by Luke Lyle and Nate Owen cut Sigourney’s lead to 39-33, head-ing into the fourth quarter. Another bucket by Lyle early in the fourth cut the lead to just four points; that’s when Bujnoch and the Savages decided that enough was enough. With 5:30 left in the game, Bujnoch used a Kyle Ferree screen to get into the lane for a lay-up in traffic. A minute later, Bujnoch got another easy lay in, this time off of an inbounds play. Now with a ten-point lead, Stuhr scored four-straight points to give Sigourney a 51-37 lead. Bujnoch converted on another driving lay-up to bring Sigourney’s lead to 53-37, with 2:55 left to play. Keota fought back to within six points with thirty second left in the game, but the Savages made enough free throws and came away with the 57-51 win. Bujnoch had a monster game, with 23 points on 8-of-16 shoot-ing, including three 3-pointers, ten rebounds and seven assists. Stuhr added 14 points, six rebounds and four blocked shots. Denny pitched in 12 points on four-of-seven shooting. The Savages are now 4-2 on the season and hosted HLV on Tuesday, Dec. 18 and play at English Valleys on Thursday.
Savages Ready to Break Roller Coaster Run

While the English Valleys’ boys’ basketball team fell to 0-6 after two losses last week, head coach Jeff Gordon still sees his team improving in a number of aspects. “I’ve been extremely proud of the hustle and heart the guys have showed this year,” said Gordon. “We’re still trying to learn to finish and get better at the mental aspects of the game.
English Valleys Boys’ Search for SuccessBut the boys are fighting hard.” On Monday, the Bears fell, 50-38, at Tri-County, and fol-lowed up the next night with a 59-27 loss at BGM. The Bears played well early on in Thornburg. The two teams battled to a 15-15 tie after the first quarter. The second period was when the Trojans found their groove, out scoring EV, 16-5. Still, the Bears were not about to give in. The team stormed back to within five points after three quarters, but in the end, the Trojans were too much and won by 12. Senior Syd George scored nine points and grabbed nine rebounds on the night. Perhaps the biggest bright spot so far for the Bears, George leads the team in scoring and rebounds with 11.3 points per game and seven rebounds a game. Sophomore Tanner Icenbice, played the best game of his young career on Monday at Tri-County.Icenbice scored 17 points on
8-of-13 shooting, while grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds. “[Tanner] did a nice job of posting up in good position all game,” Gordon said. “Our guards did a good job of feeding him the ball and he was able to finish consistently.” Another sophomore, Sam Schauer, added five points and eight rebounds. Brian Nachtman pitched in five points and four rebounds for the Bears. EV then got a tough match-up with BGM the next night. BGM got out to an early 19-9 lead, and extended that lead to 21 points at halftime. Despite shoot-ing a solid 38 percent on 12-of-31 shooting, English Valleys committed too many turnovers to hang with BGM. George led the team with 12 points on 6-of-16 shooting, and also added seven rebounds. Freshman Kellan Coppinger broke out with 11 points on four-of-seven shooting, while drilling all three of his 3-pointers. The surprise outburst was very encouraging to the EV head coach. “With Kellan, I know what he’s capable of now, after see-ing what he did [against BGM],” Gordon said. “He slowed down and played a lot more comfort-ably. That’s a problem freshmen have a lot of times. If Kellan can keep getting more comfortable, he’ll keep improving.” The Bears have two home games before they head to Christmas break. Sigourney comes to town on Thursday, Dec. 20, and EV hosts North Mahaska on the following night.
By Adam Meier,Regional Sports Editor The EV girls’ played on the road twice this week and came up even; beating Tri-County, 48-18, and losing to BGM, 46-44. Lauren Miller put on a show on Monday at Tri-County. The sophomore scored a game-high 20 points and hit four 3-pointers. Miller also accounted for eight rebounds, five steals and four assists. Miller was accompanied by Rylee Voss; her sophomore partner in crime. Voss scored 10 points and matched Miller’s eight rebounds. Voss also recorded four steals and four blocked shots. Sam Banes and Madison Parmenter each added six points for the Bears, while Shannon Steffen scored four and Allison Hewett added two points. The Bears shot 21-of-67 (31 percent) from the field. EV wasted no time taking a comfortable lead. The Bears exploded out to a 13-3 lead after the first quarter, and led by 23 at halftime. The big EV lead was far too much for the Trojans to overcome, as the Bears ran away with the 48-18 win. Things weren’t so easy for Miller and the Bears the next night in Brooklyn. BGM held Miller in check, limiting her to eight points on just 3-of-15 shooting. Miller did have five steals, two blocks and two assists, but the sophomore hit only one-of-six 3-pointers in the game. While BGM’s defense held Miller well below her 13.4 point per game average, they could not slow down Voss. Voss, who is averaging 15.8 points and 9.3 rebounds per game, scored 17 points on 6-of-14 shooting against BGM, while grabbing ten rebounds and tak-ing away six steals. It was a tight, competitive game throughout. EV took a four-point lead into the second quarter, in which BGM matched EV’s 14-point scoring output, leaving the EV lead at 26-22, at halftime. The third quarter was when the momentum swayed in BGM’s favor. EV was out scored, 15-8, in the third quarter. BGM’s defense held strong in the last quarter to limit EV to ten points, while BGM hung strong down the stretch to win by two. Shannon Steffen pitched in seven points and seven steals for EV. Madison Parmenter and Sam Banes each added five points. English Valleys is now 5-3 in SICL play and 6-3 overall. The win improved BGM’s record to 5-3 in SICL play and 5-4 overall. EV hosts Sigourney on Thursday, Dec. 20, and hosts North Mahaska the following night.

Keota
By Adam Meier,Regional Sports Editor Offensive woes continued this week for Andy Harter’s Sigourney team. The Savages played on consecutive nights; losing to BGM, 49-39, and to Keota, 37-20. The 2-6 Savages have strug-gled at putting the ball in the basket this season, but early in the game against BGM, you never would have guessed it. Sigourney tied their season high for points in a quarter on Monday, when they put up 18 points in the first against the Bears. Val Magill was proficient in the paint for the Savages. Magill scored 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting. The senior also went two-for-three from the free throw stripe and grabbed six rebounds. Teaming up with Magill was Becca Ohland. Ohland made all four of her shot attempts, to finish with eight points and six rebounds. Ohland’s athleticism gives the Savages an added explosive ele-ment on offense, especially in transition. “[Becca] does things in prac-tice, basketball-wise, that I can’t believe,” Sigourney head coach Andy Harter said. “She’s starting to come along on offense. Once Becca becomes more comfortable and experienced, she’ll be great. She hustles like no other.” After getting out to an 18-9 lead after one, Sigourney’s lead started to slowly diminish. The Bears trimmed the Savage
By Adam Meier, Regional Sports Editor The Bears took center stage at Sigourney on Friday in a round-robin meet with Sigourney-Keota, Waco and Highland-Riverside. The team started out the night matching up with SK. Seth Kerr (195) started the evening with a dominant, 16-3, decision over Noah Schuster. At 138, Cody Seaton kept the momentum alive for the Bears, as he pinned Lane Boender in 2:51. The Bears fell in the final two matches with the Cobras. Peter Conrad fell via pin to Wes Yoder at 152, and Brennen Grimm lost a hard-fought, 9-2, decision to Cole Streigle. The final tally for the dual was SK 51, EV 22. The teams split their four match-ups. The Bears then set their sights to Highland. Cody Seaton took it to his second-straight opponent, this time pinning Highland’s Tyler Frank in 3:17. Conrad was pinned again in a difficult match-up with Casey Castillo. At 170 pounds, Luke Jackson picked up a big win with a pin in 1:20, over Colton

lead to four at halftime, and by the end of the third quarter, BGM led, 34-32. The Savages were fairly effi-cient from the field, shooting 16-of-18 (42 percent), but a pile of second-half turnovers did them in. Sigourney could not hold on to the ball in the fourth quarter, and their two-point deficit quick-ly ballooned to double-digits. Courtney Hawkins and Jawny Thompson each scored nine points, as BGM went on for the 49-39 win. Maddie Wood hit two more 3-pointers for the Savages and leads the team with 13 on the season through eight games. The Savages looked to bounce back the very next night with a game at Keota. The 18-point first quarter against BGM seemed like a dis-tant memory on Tuesday. Keota’s high-pressure defense limited Sigourney to seven points in the first half and 20 for the game. The Eagles led, 20-7, at the
half, and went on for the 37-20 win. The Savages were held to 9-of-37 (24 percent) shooting from the field. For the second-straight game, Ohland scored eight points. The team got a boost from Sydney Davis, who has been dealing with a number of injuries of late; the latest of which being an ankle sprain. The junior made both 3-point-ers, for six points on the night.“[Sydney] never complains,” Harter said. “So when she went down, I knew she was really hurt. She might only be 75 per-cent right now, but she knows we need her out there, so she battles through it.” The team hosted HLV on Tuesday, and heads to North English on Thursday, Dec. 20, to take on the English Valleys Bears. “Obviously, we’ve struggled shooting so far,” added Harter. “Defensively, though, we’ve actu-ally been pretty consistent. I’m seeing improvement every single day.”
Schneider. The rest of the matches were decided by forfeits, and Highland came out on top, 42-30. Against Waco, Seth Kerr notched his second win of the night, with an injury-forfeit over Tommy Morris. Seaton completed perfect three-for-three night, by pinning Waco’s Darren Rickheim in 4:28. Brennen Grimm was the third and final Bear wrestler to compete against Waco. Grimm faced Cey Saeugling, but was pinned in 3:01. Waco won the dual with EV, 30-18. The Bears hosted a tournament on Saturday in North English. Expect a full report on the tourna-ment in next week’s issue. English Valleys wrestles again on Saturday, Jan. 5, at Coon Rapids-Bayard and on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at Lone Tree, in a meet with Washington and Tipton.

By Adam Meier,Regional Sports Editor Coming into play last week, the Keota girls’ basketball team had one win this season. After Saturday’s win against Waco, they had five. Keota went 4-0 last week, with wins against HLV, Sigourney, Tri-County and Waco. “I’ve been most pleased with our consistency,” said Keota head coach Jenny Hobbs. “We try to consistently score at least ten points every quarter of every game. We did that this week, with the exception of one quar-ter. We’ve been playing with great pressure and intensity.” The Eagles started week with a blowout win at HLV, 60-26. The offense exploded for 20 points in the second quarter and led, 32-12, at halftime. A 16-4 scoring edge in the third quarter put the game well out of reach for the Warriors. Kelsi Sieren had 12 points on 6-of-11 shooting, while grabbing ten rebounds. Maggie Baker put together a great game, scoring 11 points on five-of-six shooting. Sophomore Madison Sheetz led the team in scoring with 19 points on four-of-seven shoot-ing. Sheetz made 11-of-12 free throws and added six rebounds and three steals. “Madison [Sheetz] has emerged as someone who loves to attack the basketball,” Hobbs said. “She likes to play aggressive. She has a attacking mentality and a ‘give me the ball’ attitude. She is always looking to score.” Brooke Sieren also pitched in six points and four rebounds against HLV. The Eagles were given no time to celebrate the win, as the Savages rolled in to town the very next night. While not shooting the ball particularly well (16-of-46), the Eagles clamped down on defense to hold Sigourney to just 20 points. The team tallied a total of 12 steals and three blocked shots, on its way to a 37-20 win. Sheetz and Kelsi Sieren each put up 15 points on the night. Sheetz made seven-of-ten field goals, and

The Sigourney-Keota wres-tling team went 3-0 last Tuesday against English Valleys, Waco and Highland/Riverside. Of the four matches against EV not decided by forfeit, SK wrestlers won two of them. At 152, Wes Yoder pinned Peter Conrad in 1:12. SK’s other win over the Bears came at 170, with Cole Streigle beating Brennen Grimm in a 9-2 deci-sion. Noah Schuster (195) was taken out by EV’s Seth Kerr, 16-3, in the first match of the night. Then at 138, EV’s Cody Seaton pinned Lane Boender in 2:51. SK won the dual by a count of 51-22. Against Highland/Riverside, SK came out on top in five of their six matches. Tucker Fowler (285) and Jeremiah Green (132) each won via decisions. Fowler took down Highland’s Devin Mapp, 5-1. Green scored three points for SK by beating Kody Wood, 12-6. At 126, Jake VanEe was the only SK wrestler to lose, as he
was pinned by Travis Cole. Lane Boender, Josh Yoder (145) and Wes Yoder each pinned their Waco opponents en route to a, 54-12, team victory. Josh Yoder and Tucker Fowler recorded two more wins in their matches against Waco wrestlers. Yoder defeated Dylon Evans, 16-0, and Fowler pinned Garret Skovgaurd in 2:43. JC Dumont (220) and Cole Streigle were each pinned in their matches. Dumont was pinned by Skyler Miller, while Streigle went down to Cey Saeugling. Still, SK came out on top, 53-18, after seven wrestlers won via forfeits. After the good showing at home on Tuesday, Sigourney-Keota went to Iowa City on Saturday to take part in a tournament at Regina High School. They wrestled well and placed seven individuals in the top six spots in their weight classes. As a team, SK ended up in sixth-place with 113 points, just six points behind Fairfield and 16 behind Regina. Mount Vernon won the tournament with 224 points. Jeremiah Green was the team’s
lone champion on Saturday. Green pinned Mount Vernon’s Charlie Engelbrecht in 3:07, to take the crown at 132 pounds. Nathan Fritz finished in sec-ond-place at 120, losing only to West Branch’s Will Seydel by pin. Lane Boender pinned Maquoketa Valley’s Dylan Wright in 3:08 to take fifth-place at 138. At 145, Casey Pence of West Branch pinned Josh Yoder in the championship match, leaving Yoder with a second-place fin-ish. Wes Yoder came in fourth-place at 132 after narrowly losing to Regina’s Casey Beaver, 6-5. At 170, Cole Streigle finished in third after pinning Javi Diaz of Columbus. Tucker Fowler picked up a fourth-place finish at 285 to round out SK’s podium finish-ers. Sigourney-Keota wrestlers return to the mat on Saturday, Jan. 5, when they take part in the Van Buren Tournament. The team then hosts HLV, Moravia and Washington on Tuesday, Jan. 8.
Sieren finished 6-of-11. The Eagles led 20-7 at half-time. Sigourney’s struggles put-ting the ball in the hoop made the 13-point Keota halftime lead more than enough for the win. On Friday, the Eagles went for their third-straight win, this time at Tri-County. The team scored 24 points in the first period and cruised to a 56-17 win. Keota led, 40-8, at the half. Sieren scored in double-figures once again; scoring 12 points, while making all six of her shot attempts. Brooke Sieren added 11 points, while Sheetz and Logan Woltering each pitched in nine. The Eagles knocked down eight 3-pointers and recorded 25 steals. Then, on Saturday, the Eagles wrapped up their 4-0 week with a 51-25 win over Waco. Once again, the team got out quickly, leading 12-3 after the first quar-ter and 21-11 at the half. A big third quarter left the Eagles
ahead, 37-19 after three. Keota proceeded to keep its foot on the gas and stormed away by out scoring Waco, 14-6, in the last quarter. Kelsi Sieren capped her huge week with yet another big game; scoring 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field. Sheetz scored nine points and Megan Olson added five. Madison Sieren is healthy once again after her scare with a knee bruise. Sieren scored seven points against Waco, and returned to action on Dec. 4 against Belle Plaine. Keota played Montezuma at home on Tuesday, Dec. 18, and then hosts Iowa Valley on Friday, Dec. 21. The Eagles are now 5-4 on the season. “I’ve been extremely happy with the improvement of the team,” Hobbs added. “We’ve decreased turnovers and are calming down as we get experience. and Derek Berg each scored 12; and Brian Berg added 11 points. Keota’s press caused all sorts of problems for the Trojans. Derek Berg recorded seven steals and Lyle tallied six, along with 12 rebounds. As a team, the Eagles recorded 30 steals. Leading 15-0 after one quar-ter, Keota let up and allowed Tri-County to out score them,
17-15, in the second quarter. Still leading by 13 at halftime, the Eagles added on to their lead in the third quarter and ran away for a 59-36 win. The following night, the Eagles returned home and picked up a solid non-conference win over Waco, 51-30. Again, the team had four players in double-figures: Lyle and Greiner each had 14 points; Brian Berg added 11; and Owen scored ten. Lyle grabbed 11
rebounds, while Owen added 13 boards and seven assists; giving each a double-double. Keota led, 20-8, at the half, and coasted to a 21-point win to move to 6-2 overall. Montezuma came to town on Tuesday, Dec. 18 and then the Iowa Valley Tigers come to Keota on Friday.

With Our Thanks For Your PatronageAs we prepare to deck the halls, we’d like to display our appreciationfor all the people who have helped make this past year a successful onefor us, and wish you all a very merry holiday season.
‘Twas... A few days before Christmas and I looked at my car.
It was bumped and all dented; been driven too far.The horn didn’t beep, The signals just quit,
The brakes didn’t work, The tires were split. The windshield was cracked and was hard to see through.
The gas line was clogged; Hydraulic lines too.I shrugged my humped shoulders and uttered a sigh.
Different wheels I must get; To this mess say “Bye-Bye”.To Wagler Motor Co. I went hoping I’d feel,
Their Showroom of values would give me a Good Deal.I looked to the left and then to the right,
They all sparkled and shined under all those bright lights. It was then I saw it in the center of the lot,
I could feel my heart pounding, My cheeks were all hot.Mike, Brian and Jim smiled and said, “Simmer down,” “I’ll give you a Deal, How does this figure sound?”
With that I said, “Yes” and jumped at that price, ‘Cause I wanted that car so shiny and nice!
Waglers, Waglers, my dreams have come true.

By Adam Meier, Regional Sports Editor It was a busy, but rewarding week for the Keota boys’ basketball squad. The team improved to 6-2 overall, with the only loss of the week com-ing at home against Sigourney. The Eagles picked up wins against HLV, Tri-County and Waco. On Monday the team traveled to Victor and got a 59-37 win over HLV. Sophomore Nate Owen was simply unstop-pable in the low post. Owen scored a season-high 25 points, on 9-of-14 shooting. Owen also drilled two 3-pointers and grabbed nine rebounds. Luke Lyle tallied a double-double with 12 points and ten rebounds. Kolton Greiner added 11 points. The Eagles got out to a quick 16-7 lead after the first, but the Warriors fought back to within four at halftime. Keota kicked it back into gear in the third peri-od to regain control of the game. Leading, 38-24, going into the fourth, the Eagles were able to pull away for good, winning by 22. The team shot 21-of-46 (46 percent) from the field and out rebounded HLV, 37-25. With one win under its belt on the week, Keota turned its attention to county rival, Sigourney. Early in the game, the Eagles could not match the intensity of the Savages. A hot Sigourney start gave way to a 17-9 Sigourney lead after one, and a 27-18 halftime deficit for the Eagles. Keota shot 18-of-51 (35 percent) from the field on Tuesday against Sigourney, but were only able to make 2-of-16 3-pointers.
Despite the cold shoot-ing, the Eagles still managed to fight back to within four, early in the fourth quarter after a Lyle lay-up. Lyle finished with a team-high 17-points on 6-of-16 shoot-ing. Nate Owen scored 13 points, while Derek Berg and Greiner each added eight. After closing Sigourney’s lead to 39-35 with seven minutes to play, the Savages went off on a 14-2 run over nearly a five-min-ute span. The Eagles came back to close the gap to 55-49 with 30 seconds left, after a Lyle runner in the lane. However, Sigourney was able to convert their late game free throws to finish off the Eagles, 57-51. Sigourney’s Vaclav Bujnoch scored a game-high 23 points. After games on back-to-back nights, the Eagles got two days to prepare for a trip to Thornburg to play Tri-County. A balanced offensive attack led the way to a 59-36 Eagles win. Keota had four players score in double figures: Greiner scored 13 points; Lyle
