Dear 4-H’ers, Parents, and Leaders:
The month of March has just ended as we have watched a flurry of 4-H activities and
events take place! We have been very active with past events of the Favorite Foods
Contest, County Photography Contest, Winter Fun Day hosted by the Kent County
4-H Links, State Horse Bowl, and Younger Member Weekend.
Many 4-H events and activities are planned for the upcoming month. These
events include judging contests for Clothing, Horticulture, Wildlife, and Livestock,
the Spring 4-H and FFA Dairy Show, and Equine Arts Contest. We will continue our
Front Porch Demonstrations at Fifer Orchards this year and encourage 4-H members
to contact the 4-H Office or view guidelines on our website to get involved in this activ-
ity. Our Clothing and Textiles Showcase event and County Sewing Contest will be
held on April 22nd, and we look forward to seeing all the outstanding sewing construc-
tion that our members will complete as well as see our members participate in the
Ready to Wear event. Also, our annual 4-H Legislative Day is planned for April
26th. This is a great way to learn more about our state government, and we en-
courage 4-H members to attend to take advantage of this opportunity.
The County Demonstration Contest will be held on April 19th. We encourage 4
-H members to develop a demonstration and participate in this event or sign up to
participate in our Make-Up Demonstration Day on May 24th. This is a great event
that teaches presentation skills that you can use for a lifetime.
Livestock members are continuing to work with their animal projects as the live-
stock show season approaches. Buying animals, assuming the responsibility for daily
care, and working with these projects to prepare them for upcoming livestock shows
will keep all of these 4-H members very busy. We look forward to seeing each of you
present your animals in the show ring in an upcoming show.
On March 31st we held our 19th annual Kent County 4-H Basket Auction. We
cannot express our sincere thanks to all our 4-H clubs and supporters who donated
items that were sold at this event! Your generosity is outstanding, and Kent County
4-H can be very proud of their continued efforts with this event as we continue to pro-
vide support for the Delaware 4-H Foundation.
4-H in Kent County is alive and well! We hope that you will continue to look
for upcoming opportunities to take part in, and we look forward to seeing you at future
4-H events and activities.

Easter Bunny Drive Donations DUE April 7th Harrington Sunshine 4-H Club will again be coordinating an Easter Bunny Drive. Club members will
be collecting stuffed Easter Bunnies to distribute to children in the hospital during Easter Holiday.
Anyone can donate to the drive. Donation delivery date will be April 7th. Thank you in advance for your
help with this annual project.
Clothing & Textile Showcase
April 22nd
Intent Forms DUE April 7th The Clothing & Textile Showcase will be held on
Saturday , April 22nd at Lake Forest High
School in Felton, DE starting at 7:00 pm. Partici-
pants will arrive at 2:00 pm to participate in inter-
views and prepare for the event. 4-H members will
be showcasing their sewing construction skills in
both Clothing Construction event as well as the
Ready to Wear event. Entries for the County Sew-
ing Contest will also be on display. Intent Forms
are due April 7th to the Kent County Extension Of-
fice.

County Demonstration Contest – April 19th –
Entries DUE April 12th
The County Demonstration Contest will be held on Wednesday, April 19th from 4:00-7:00 pm at the
Kent County Extension Office. 4-H members can select from the list of available project areas on the
entry form to present an Individual Demonstration or a Team Demonstration on any subject matter
related to that project area. Individual demonstrations consist of one 4-H member and Team
Demonstrations consist of two 4-H members from Kent County. Demonstration Guidelines are
available and can be found on the state 4-H website under State and National Events &
Competitions. Participating in the County Demonstration Contest is a great opportunity to show
your presentation skills while teaching others about your 4-H project areas. Please contact the 4-H
Office if you need additional information about this event. The registration form and Guidelines for
this event can be found in this newsletter and also on our Kent County 4-H website under Forms and

Environmental Camp
Registration Opened March 1st
Environmental Camp (8-12 years old) is
once again being offered this year. The
camp will be held at Mallard Lodge in
Smyrna. The registration fee for this
camp is $110.
Please contact your county 4-H office if
transportation to Mallard Lodge is a
problem.
The date for this camp is July 6-8.

Kent County Horse Show Ads—
Began Selling March 1st
Kent County will again host a Horse Show on June 11th,
located at the Delaware State Fairgrounds. Through the sale
of ads for the Horse Show program booklet, this event serves
as the primary fundraiser for the Kent County Leaders
Association to provide funding for the many 4-H events,
activities, scholarships, and awards that they provide
throughout the 4-H year. 4-H members can sell ads to
businesses, organizations, individuals, or any other 4-H
supporter. Ad cost are $60 for a full page, $30 for a half page,
and $20 for a third page. Members can also solicit individuals
including family members, friends or other 4-H supporters for
patron ads. These ads are for donations of $5 or more.
Information is available in the Kent County Extension Office
for anyone who is willing to solicit ads for this fundraiser. All
4-H members are encouraged to help in this effort by assisting
in the selling of ads to provide funding to continue our County
4-H programming.

Favorite Foods Contest Recap
March 4th was an exciting day for Kent County 4-H with 77 youth preparing food dishes for the 2017 Favorite Foods Con-
test. The event was held at the Delaware State Fair Exhibit Hall. Through this contest, participants not only make fabu-
lous food items in the five categories of Appetizers, Breads, Meats and Main Dishes, and Desserts, but they also learned
how to prepare a table setting, write a recipe correctly, and prepare a menu. The 4-Hers’ also used their presentation and
communication skills during the interviews with their judge. It was an outstanding day to showcase our 4-H Youth in the
foods project area. We would like to thank our judges for their time and expertise during the day in working with these
youth. We would like to thank also the following volunteers who assisted with the event : Leader’s Committee: Sandy
Reynolds, Joanne Carter, Ted Reynolds, and Shana Galloway; Junior Council Members: Garrett Geidel, Spring Vasey,
Lake Vasey, Rachel Taylor, Riley Taylor, Kaylee Collison, Chris Wood, Noah Gardner-Bowler, Sarah Snyder, Maci Carter,
Brielle Carter, Morgan Galloway and Olivia Gaines. See the results for those who participated below. Congratulations to
the winners. Thank You to all the parents and other family members who helped during this event.

Delaware 4-H National Congress– Applications
DUE May 1st
Delaware 4-H youth ages 14 and older as of January
1st are eligible to apply for selection to participate in
the National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, GA on Novem-
ber 24-28, 2017. This award trip recognizes youth for
outstanding program/project accomplishments, leader-
ship and citizenship/community service. Applications
along with more information can be found on the State
4-H website under State and National Events. The ap-
plication for National Congress is also known as the
State Record Book.
Horticulture and Wildlife Judging
Contests -April 24th

We have been very busy this month. Several of our club members participated in the Favorite Foods Con-
test and brought home many ribbons. They also took part in the judging contests and Winter Fun Day. A few
members took part in the county photography contest as well. Many of us traveled to the nursing home in Mil-
ford this month to play games and work on a craft with the residents. We’ve been working hard on sewing our
garments for the Fashion Review and getting our topics ready for the demonstration contests. Our members
are excited to lead the Easter Bunny drive once again this year and donated many animals that will help kids
who are in the hospital. We’ve also made St. Patrick day favors for many groups so their trays will be festive
for the holiday. Our horse bowl team had a great showing this month and we are proud of the work they did.
Some of our younger members are excited about Younger Member Weekend and being able to explore all that 4
-H has to offer. Finally we’re getting ready for the basket auction at the end of the month. We hope to see eve-
ryone there!

Hearts 4 Horses has been
practicing so hard for
Horse bowl over the last
few months... and we did
so well! We had a lot of new girls that did it for the
first time, and really liked it! We had a Senior, Jun-
ior, and Beginner team. Congrats to the
Beginner team with Stephanie Strachar and Zoe
Poore placing 2nd in the state! Congrats to all the
Horse bowl teams ! We also have been working on
gearing up for show season which begins
in April! We can't wait for warm weather and rides
on our horses! I also participated in the Favorite
Foods contest for the first time, and I won for my
"Veggie Pizza" in the Appetizer category for my age
group! ! It was so much fun... everyone should try
it! Our club is having a "Dine out" night at Texas
Roadhouse on Tuesday,
April, 18, which is also
Kid's Night! ! Please bring

Legacy Club News

Hello 4Hers! We have been busy enjoying projects and our
meetings! First, we would like to congratulate everyone
who participated in the Public Speaking competition! Nice
job!
Next, we would like to thank Officer Heather Imhof for
showing us the Troop 3 Police Station. She taught us about
Delaware State Troopers and their jobs. It was amazing
and very informative!
Also, we would like to congratulate the 13 members of our
club that participated in the Favorite Foods competition.
Blue ribbons all around and some great foods prepared!
Next, we will be preparing brown bag lunches for the home-
less! It really feels good to help others! Some of us are get-
ting really excited since Summer Camp registration is now
open and looking forward to all the fun we have there!

Westville s had a busy couple of months. Congrats to those
who participated in the Favorite Foods Contest. We had a
blast.
This Saturday March 25th we will be hosting the food
booth the Genetic Edge Sale. Come out and find your show
pigs for this years shows. Stop by the booth and get a tasty
treat.
We will be there all day. We are also working on our basket
for the Auction.

We began our meeting this month with a program on how to safeguard your identity. Everyone needs to
take precautions to protect their personal information from being used by others. Members learned ways to
protect ourselves from being a victim of identity fraud, such as picking a strong password and staying cau-
tious.
This month, Jr. Council members had fun counseling Younger Member Weekend at Mallard Lodge. Camp-
ers learned how to go Geocaching, line dance, and about various wildlife and wetlands. I hope everyone who
came will attend again next year!
The annual Kent County Basket Auction took place on Friday, March 31st at the Felton Fire Hall. The Jr.
Council had a “Wake Up” themed basket, which contained breakfast foods and cooking utensils. Thank you to
everyone who donated items and attended the event!
Continue selling Horse Show Ads. This is a Kent County 4-H Leader Association Fundraiser, which means
that the proceeds support: Camp Scholarships, Younger Member Weekend, Awards and Refreshments at all
County Events, and many other uses. They are simple to sell, so go around to friends, family, and businesses to
help support your local 4-H.
Next month on April 19th is County Demonstration Day. Begin practicing your timed demonstration on a
specific topic, so that you can be prepared. Also, next month is the Clothing & Textiles Showcase Contest on
April 22nd at Lake Forest North Elementary School. If you like to sew, you can create a garment that you will
answer questions on and model in front of an audience. These 4-H events are great ways to be more involved.
Our next Jr. Council meeting is on April 18th at 7pm at the Kent County Extension Office. Hope to see eve-
ryone 13 years and older there!

Delaware 4-H Foundation announces 2017 Scholarship Opportunities
The Delaware 4-H Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit organization formed to manage private funds in support
of the 4-H youth development program in Delaware. As an educational organization, the foundation encour-
ages young adults to pursue education and training beyond high school. Funds are available to support one or
more scholarships offered for Delaware 4-H members to pursue higher education. This award is to recognize
continued 4-H leadership.
To qualify, applicants must have completed five years as a 4-H member, with at least three of those in Dela-
ware. Recipients must be high school graduates and be enrolled full-time at any two- or four-year institution
of higher education for the fall or spring semester of the 2017-18 academic year. Applicants may be enrolled in
any area of study. High school seniors will be evaluated separately from matriculated college students. Schol-
arships will only be awarded once per individual; those not awarded are encouraged to apply again.
Scholarship selection will be based upon 4-H leadership, 4-H involvement, school/extracurricular/
community involvement, academic performance, and two letters of reference. Applications may be downloaded

Arena on Saturday, July 29 at 9:00 AM. Partici-

The First State Antique Tractor Club offers
yearly scholarships to graduating seniors for
the purpose of continuing education in the field
of agriculture.
The scholarship will be awarded to a full time
student, accepted in an agriculture program at
a two or four year university or college. All ap-

plicants must show financial need and academ-
ic merit. The amount of the award/awards will
be determined by the Scholarship Committee of

FFA Summer Livestock Classic on June 10, 2017 at the Delaware State Fair.
This event is open to any 4-H or FFA member in Delaware and the eastern
shore counties of Cecil, Kent, Queen Anne’s, Caroline, Dorchester and Talbot
counties. Classes offered include showmanship and market classes. Entry in-

2017 Delaware 4-H Horse of the Year Winner Announced
Congratulations to New Castle County 4-H’er Sarah Brown who is the winner
of the 2017 Delaware 4-H Horse of the Year essay contest sponsored by the
Delaware 4-h Horse Advisory Committee and Peter Stone horses. Sarah is a
member of the Heavenly Hooves 4-H Club and nominated Bree a 21 year old
Quarter Horse mare. In her essay Sarah shared her story of building a rela-
tionship with Bree, a previously unloved horse, and how the most important
thing Bree taught her was how to find the silver lining of an experience and
just enjoy being together. In the fall, Sarah will receive a custom painted mod-
el of Bree generously created and donated by Peter Stone horses. For more

All market animals must be identified with a Delaware State Fair ear tag in order to be eligible. This applies
to market steers, feeder calves, market lambs, market goats and market hogs. New for this year feeder
calves must be tagged! Breed animals do not need to be tagged.
May 6- 9:00 am-11:00 am- Sussex County- REC (no cattle)- minimum pig weight 75 lbs.
May 6- 9:00 am- 11:00 am- NCC- Newark- Cook Farm- minimum pig weight is 75 lbs.
May 13- 9:00 am-11:00 am- Kent County- DSF- minimum pig weight 80 lbs.
May 19- 6:00 pm-9:00 pm- Kent County- DSF- Livestock Show- minimum pig weight is 85 lbs. (no Saturday
tagging)
May 23- 5:00 pm- 8:00 pm- Kent County- DSF- FINAL TAGGING minimum pig weight is 85 lbs.
**Sussex County does not have the ability to weigh steers or feeder calves so if you want your steer to be
weighed at the time of tagging, it must be brought to one of the Delaware State Fair tagging dates. To be eligi-
ble for the Delaware Farm Bureau Rate of Gain Contest, you must weigh and tag at the location for your
county.
2017 DSF Swine Show Changes: ***NEW SPLIT SHOW FORMAT***
First half of week- Market, Showmanship and Barrow Show
Saturday July 22nd
Weigh in and barn meeting will remain on Saturday
Showmanship will start at 4 PM Saturday (if you are using a breed pig for showmanship you are
allowed to bring that in with the market pigs before Saturday at 8 am
Sunday July 23rd
Market Show will start at 8 am (about 2 hours long) after the market show they will take a break
and start the barrow show
After barrow show they will notify the animals going to auction
Start preparing for remaining hogs to exit and breed pigs to enter
Monday July 24th
The ones going to auction will stay until the end of the fair. Exhibitors whose pigs are not going to
auction will need to make arrangements for the pigs to be shipped out between 12 am- 9 am.
It is imperative that you have a plan for where your market animal is headed if it does not
make the Junior Livestock Auction before you ever arrive at the fair!!
Second Half of the week- Jr & Open Breed Show
Monday July, 24th
12 am-9am breed pigs may enter while the market is leaving
Crossbred gilts will be weighed in at 9 am
Jr and Open Breed Show will start at 4 pm
Wednesday July 26th
Exhibitors of breed animals may remove up to 12/3 of their breed animals from 12 am- 6 pm.
Exhibitors of all market animals should send buyer letters to potential buyers prior to the start of the 2017
DSF. It is not the Fair’s nor the Junior Livestock Auction’s responsibility to provide buyers for you. Follow up
thank you notes are critically important as well.
FYI for 2017- Maryland State Fair will require RFID tags for cattle and hog exhibitors- it
is not clear yet if they will require RFID for Maryland County Fairs

2017 Delaware 4-H Avian Bowl Rules,
Entry Information and Coaches Training
The rules and guidelines along with the study sections and entry
information for the 2017 Delaware 4-H Avian Bowl held during
the Delaware State Fair has been posted to the State 4-H Animal

National 4-H Dairy Conference Applications Due
May 1
The 2017 National 4-H Dairy Conference is October 1-5, 2017 in
Madison, Wisconsin. The conference is for 15 to 18 year-olds who
have participated in the 4-H Dairy Program for at least three
years, who are currently enrolled in 4-H and have an interest in
the dairy industry. The Delaware 4-H Foundation provides fund-
ing for two delegates and one chaperone each year.
The conference will be held concurrently with the World Dairy Ex-
po. National 4-H Dairy Conference delegates may not participate
in the National 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest or exhibit cattle
at the World Dairy Expo due to time constraints. You may not
have previously attended National 4-H Dairy Conference. For

Calling all young artists! With categories encompassing painting, pastels, charcoals, photography,

Harness Racing Camp
Coming June 17-21, 2017
Applications Due May 15th!
The Harness Horse Youth Foundation, Har-
rington Raceway and University of Delaware
Cooperative Extension are pleased to be
partnering once again to hold a 5 day-4 night
harness racing camp for youth ages 12-14.
The Harness Horse Youth Foundation is a charita-
ble 501(c)3 organization dedicated to providing
young people and their families educational oppor-
tunities with harness horses, in order to foster the
next generation of participants and fans. Harness
racing camp gives youth an opportunity to
experience working with, caring for and
driving harness racing ponies while interact-
ing with industry professionals and learning
to work together. Camp will begin on Satur-
day morning, June 17 and end on Wednesday
evening, June 21. That evening, Harrington
Raceway will feature campers participating
in televised races on Harrington’s track with
well-known drivers as their racing partners.
Campers will reside in the state police bar-
racks on the Delaware State Fairgrounds for
the duration of the camp. The camp fee is
$150 per participant which includes all meals
and camp expenses. Camp attendance is lim-
ited in order to provide proper supervision
for this intensive and fun learning experi-

PQA Certification
All Junior Market Hog Exhibitors are required to have a current PQA certification in order to exhibit
a market hog at the Delaware State Fair. There are currently three options for obtaining PQA certifi-
cation. The class certification option is open to any age but youth under the age of 8 (computed as of
Jan 1 of the current year) must have a parent attend the class with them as national program guide-
lines do not permit a child under 8 to hold their own certification. Certification received through the
classroom option is valid for one year.
Youth over the age of 12 (computed as of Jan 1 of the current year) have the option of taking a multi-
ple choice test in lieu of attending classroom training. The benefit of the testing option is that certifi-
cation may last for longer than one year, depending on the age of the youth at test time. Youth must
score 70% or better to pass the test and can take versions of the test up to three times in one sitting to
pass.
There is an online training, testing, and certification option for youth ages 8-19. Delivered in the form
of an engaging, interactive online module, the new online option allows participants to learn, test, and
become certified in Youth PQA Plus. For youth age 12 and under, a parent log-in for security is re-
quired. Youth only need to complete one of these three options for obtaining certification. Online certi-
fication is not an option for parents if it is their first time receiving a PQA certification.
In 2017, for all youth who receive their PQA certification this year, certification will only last through
2017 as the new national Youth for the Quality Care of Animals program will become the single, na-
tional certification program for all livestock species beginning in 2018. For more information and to

The event allows 4-H’ers to showcase their consumer Skills, sewing skills or both as they participate in three different areas of competition. 4-H’er can participate in one portion or all three portions of the showcase. 4-H’ers must be present the day of the showcase to interview with the judge.

Delaware 4-H Demonstration Contest
General Rules and Guidelines
The demonstration contest is open to 4-H’ers age 8 and older on January 1st of the current calendar year.
The goal of a 4-H demonstration is to show others how to do something or to provide information about a
subject using appropriate illustrations and/or props. A demonstration or illustrated talk provides 4-H’ers
with an opportunity to show their public presentation skills while teaching others about 4-H project areas.
Members may only participate in one state level demonstration per year.
Contest Categories:
Each category may have an individual division and a team division. These two divisions will be scored
and compared independently; when applicable a champion will be chosen in the individual division and
the team division. The categories are separated into four groups: Citizenship/General 4-H; Healthy
Living, Animal Science; and Plants, Environmental or other Sciences.

Salutations
There may or may not be an emcee who announces each demonstration. However, each speaker is
expected to greet his or her listeners in some form.
The salutation does not need to be the very first words spoken. If a demonstration starts with a question,
challenge, or stage-setting scenario, the salutation may more effectively occur after the first few
sentences.
Note cards / Memorization
It is recommended that 4-H members use notes for their demonstration. Members should use their notes
as a guide, if needed, and should not read their demonstration. The speech should be delivered in a
manner that sounds natural and not recited. Memorization/familiarity is not faulted.
Use of Demonstration
4-H’ers may use their presentation in the Demonstration Contest one time. In other words, they may not
give the same presentation year after year. 4-H members may not use an old demonstration designed by a
sibling, other 4-H member or someone else. Each demonstration should be original work by the 4-H’er(s)
delivering the speech.
Time Requirements
Set-Up: 5 minutes will be provided for set-up. 1 point for every 15 seconds over will be
deducted from the final score. Youth should set up demonstration without help
from an adult(s).
Demonstration: No demonstration shall be less than 3 minutes. 1 point for every 15 seconds under
3 minutes will be deducted from the final score.
No demonstration shall exceed 15 minutes. 1 point for every 15 seconds over 15
minutes will be deducted from the final score.
Time for questions and answers with the audience will NOT be included in the 15 minutes provided for
the demonstration.

Delaware 4-H Foundation announces 2017 scholarship opportunities The Delaware 4-H Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit organization formed to manage private funds in support of the 4-H youth development program in Delaware. As an educational organization, the foundation encourages young adults to pursue education and training beyond high school. Funds are available to support one or more scholarships offered for Delaware 4-H members to pursue higher education. This award is to recognize continued 4-H leadership. To qualify, applicants must have completed five years as a 4-H member, with at least three of those in Delaware. Recipients must be high school graduates and be enrolled full-time at any two- or four-year institution of higher education for the fall or spring semester of the 2017-18 academic year. Applicants may be enrolled in any area of study. High school seniors will be evaluated separately from matriculated college students. Scholarships will only be awarded once per individual; those not awarded are encouraged to apply again. Scholarship selection will be based upon 4-H leadership, 4-H involvement, school/extracurricular/community involvement, academic performance, and two letters of reference. Applications may be downloaded from the Delaware 4-H Foundation website (http://www.delaware4hfoundation.org). Please limit application information to space provided. Only current transcript and two (2) letters of reference may be attached. Incomplete application packages will not be considered. Scholarship recipients will be announced at the Delaware State Fair. Scholarship checks will be issued to scholarship winners AFTER completion of their first semester. THE FIRST STATE ANTIQUE TRACTOR CLUB AGRICUL TURE
SCHOLARSHIP A WARD APPLICATION
The purpose of The First State Antique Tractor Club is to preserve and display Antique Tractors and Farm
Equipment and to provide the public with an opportunity to experience the historical growth of agricultural
technology. This is accomplished by holding an annual show and participating in the Delaware State Fair and
12 other annual events.
The First State Antique Tractor Club offers yearly scholarships to graduating seniors for the purpose of
continuing education in the field of agriculture.
The scholarship will be awarded to a full time student, accepted in an agriculture program at a two or four year
university or college. All applications must be received by April 15. All applicants must show financial need
and academic merit. The amount of the award/awards will be determined by the Scholarship Committee of
The First State Tractor Club. Three (3) $1000.00 scholarships will be awarded this year.
The scholarships are paid directly to the school or college as directed by the recipient.
The award must be paid to a school or college by October 31 or it will be awarded to another student. A
change in the college after the scholarships have been awarded will result in a review by the selection
committee.
The scholarships will be awarded at The First State Antique Tractor Club's annual show.

Kent County 4-H Livestock Show Saturday May 20, 2017
**All County Show exhibitors that aren’t participating in the Jackpot, must be weigh in between 8:00-
9:30 am Saturday. The scales will close for the day at 9:30 am** 1. All entries must be received at the Extension office by close of business May 1. No late entries will be accepted.
2. Entry fee is $8.00/head. Checks should be made payable to: Kent County 4-H Livestock Advisory Committee and entries mailed to: 4-H Livestock Show 69 Transportation Circle, Dover, DE 19901
3. You must be pre-entered to participate. All exhibitors must have been enrolled in Kent County 4-H by March 1. Current students that are members in good standing of a Kent County FFA chapter are also eligible to participate (Smyrna, Dover, Caesar Rodney, Polytech Lake Forest and Milford). FFA members are limited to 2 animals total, species to be determined by the exhibitor. Kent County 4-H members are not limited.

5. Age for Showmanship is 4-H age (as of January 1 of the current year).
6. Cloverbuds (under 8 as of January 1) are only permitted to exhibit in the Cloverbud class for the species. Cloverbud classes are for participation only.
7. Exhibitors must wear the show T-Shirt provided to them.
8. Exhibitors must furnish their own bedding. Lambs, goats and swine may only be bedded on shavings. Shavings will be available on the grounds for purchase.
9. Automatic waters for hogs will not be available. Exhibitor must provide their own watering system.
10. Shows will be going on concurrently in two rings. Only showmanship classes will be held for exhibitors showing in another ring. If there is a conflict, show officials must be notified prior to the start of the class. If there is a conflict with a market or breeding class, another exhibitor may show the animal.
11. The Round Robin Supreme Showman competition will be held once showmanship is completed for all 4 species. The show will continue until that point, at which a break will be taken to prepare for the contest. At the conclusion of the Round Robin, the show will resume.
12. Animals entered in the market classes may not be shown in the breeding female classes.
13. Both heifer and steer calves are allowed in the feeder calf class. No bulls.
14. Tagging for the Delaware State Fair will be available on Friday, May 19th from 6:00-9:00 pm, however only animals participating in the show may remain on the grounds.
15. Exhibitors must clean their pens before they leave at the conclusion of the show.

Novice exhibitors are in their first year of showing. Cloverbuds are 5-7
years old and will exhibit in Cloverbud Showmanship Classes only.
Cloverbuds cannot show in the market classes. No entry fee for
Cloverbuds.
This is a market show only. All animals must be identified by a tag on
the day of the show except feeder calves. Sheep or Goats must have a
scrapie tag. You can obtain them from USDA.
Each member is allowed a maximum of two animals per species, and must
be a member in good standing of a 4-H Club or FFA Chapter.
To provide a quality show, please be sure to have your entries mailed
prior to the deadline of MAY 5, 2017. Entry fees must accompany
entry forms! No exceptions! All returned checks subject to a $30
return fee. Checks payable to NCC 4-H and FFA Livestock Classic.

Animals added by an exhibitor on the day of the show (up to a maximum
of two per species) must pay $16 per additional animal BEFORE THE
SHOW STARTS.
Exhibitors must show their own animal – Exceptions: Cloverbuds are
encouraged to show an older exhibitor’s animal. They do not have to
bring their own. If an exhibitor has two animals in the same weight
class, the second animal may be shown by another junior exhibitor, but
the show officials must be notified prior to entering the ring.
Show officials reserve the right to send home any animal not in show
condition. A representative from the State Veterinarian’s office will be
inspecting animals. Out-of-state entries must have inter-state health
papers dated within 30 days of the show.
All lambs must be slick-sheared within one week of the show. NO
artificial hair on beef.
Supplies & Equipment:
Pens will be provided. Bring your own bedding.
Automatic pig watering system will NOT be provided. Please bring your
own waterers or buckets.
Wash facilities are available.

All exhibitors will receive a t-shirt, which must be worn during the
show!
Additional t-shirts will be available for purchase for $10 each.
Ten place ribbons and participation ribbons in each class.
Special prizes for Showmanship Champions – Supreme Champion
Showman will receive a custom belt buckle! Once an exhibitor wins the
buckle, he/she is ineligible for showmanship classes.
Schedule:
Weigh-ins are from 7 – 8:00 am. Exhibitors meeting will be at 8:45 am.
Show will begin at 9:00 am with showmanship classes. Beef/hogs will be
shown in one show ring, sheep/goats will show in the other.
Exhibitors are reminded to please be prompt for their classes. There will
be a first and last call for each class - it is your responsibility to listen
for the classes. If you miss the calls and the class starts, you will not be
allowed to enter the ring. If there is a conflict with another showmanship
class, you must notify the ring officials to hold the class.
WE WILL NOT HOLD ANY MARKET CLASSES! In market classes only:
If an exhibitor is showing in a class when a class that they have entered
with another species begins, another exhibitor may show for them.
Showmanship for all species will be before lunch.
Supreme Showman will be expected to show all 4 species and will be
awarded just prior to the lunch break. Market classes will begin after a
30-minute lunch break.
All exhibitors must remain until the conclusion of the show. We are
responsible for tearing down after the show. Help is greatly appreciated.
Food stand will be provided by the New Castle County 4-H Links.
Animals can not arrive prior to 4 pm on Friday.
Used Livestock Supplies Exchange: Help a new stock kid by selling
your surplus equipment at reduced rates. Bring your excess pig boards,
show blankets, show sticks, clippers, etc. and sell for some cash. Mark
your price on the item and 20% commission will be deducted from
proceeds. Organized by Porter Gang 4-H Club.
County Livestock Judging Contests will be held Friday, June 9
starting at 6:30 PM. See your county office for information.
Camping is $35 per night. Please pay when you arrive; there will be limited spaces.
NO ALCOHOL IS PERMITTED ON THE GROUNDS AT ANY TIME.

Kent County 4-H Horse Judging Contest
Each county holds a horse judging contest. The contest is held following the standards set in Delaware 4-H Horse Judging Contest Leaders Guide.
This is a fun learning experience for Kent County 4-H youth. The contest is used to determine the top 10 youth in the county to compete at the State Horse Judging Contest and it recognizes the members/Club that achieve top honors at the Kent County Awards Banquet.
The contest consists of judging and placing several classes, as well as giving at least one set of oral reasons. The contest is organized by officials from the Kent County 4-H Office, volunteer from local clubs, and equine professionals. Judging contests are utilized by the Delaware 4-H program to develop critical thinking skills such as comparing and contrasting, decision making, and oral communication, as well as to enhance project knowledge.
Contest Format:
The county contest is held at stable or arena with adequate space for horses, members, and parent audience. Generally the contest is held on a weeknight but could also be held on a weekend. Organizers may offer the contest in conjunction with a local horse show.
Participants are expected to report at least 10 minutes prior to the start of the contest in order to receive their judging cards and to hear any additional instructions. Youth may not be permitted to participate in the contest if they are late.
Items to bring include closed toe shoes/boots, clipboard, plain paper for notes, and a pen or pencil. Use of cell phones or any other materials will result in disqualification.
The contest consists of judging halter classes and, if possible, performance classes. Generally three classes are judged at the county contest.
One class will be selected as an “oral reasons” class. Participates will be told BEFORE the contest which class is to be for oral reasons and should plan to take extra notes on the class (see Oral Reason Explained for more information).
The halter classes are positioned within the arena and participants are divided into groups. They have approximately 10-15 minutes to judge the class and take any notes necessary to give their oral reasons. Horse handlers give the youth several different views; side, front and rear, and then walk and trot the horses one at a time. Near the conclusion of the class, participants are allowed a "close inspection".
Common breeds judged during the halter portion of the contest have included (but are not limited to) Arabians, Quarter Horses, Paint Horses, Appaloosa Horses, Haflingers, Hunter Type Horses, Miniature Horses, Shetland Ponies, Stock Horses, Stock Ponies, and Welsh Ponies. Common performance classes include but are not limited to English Pleasure, Pleasure Driving, Trail, Trail in Hand, Western Pleasure and Working Western. The guidelines utilized in the placing of judging classes include USEF, AQHA and respective breed association rules.
Once time is called, 4-H members must hand in their placing card to officials before they rotate to the next class. It is important that they note their class placing on their notes sheet for the oral reasons class because once the placing card is handed in, they may not have it back.
Participants are expected to give one set of oral reasons on the designated class at the conclusion of the judging classes. A short break for preparation time is allowed. Oral Reason Explained Oral reasons should be between two to three minutes in length for each class. They are judged on criteria including terminology, organization, accuracy, relevancy and presentation. A child will score higher if they can deliver their oral reasons without the use of notes. Sometimes after the delivery of oral reasons, the judge will ask the child a few specific questions to see how well they understood or observed the class. Presenting oral reasons is a standard of all judging contests. Youth should review how to give oral reasons. Practice giving oral reasons to fellow members, parents and leaders. 4-H references used for horse bowl and hippology are very helpful for learning horse judging. Knowing basic terms will allow the youth to more confidently and accurately describe the horses being evaluated and thus judge the class. Eligibility of Participants: Participants must be current Delaware 4-H members. Each county is allowed 10 participants to attend the state contest. If a county does not fill all ten of its slots, then those unused slots become available for other counties to use. Individual counties determine the selection process to fill these slots. Attending county judging practices is usually a good way to ensure a child’s participation. Volunteers from the State 4-H Horse Advisory committee may organize several practices and training sessions beginning in the spring. This information is included in newsletters and direct mailings to organizational leaders, horse project group leaders and youth who have registered as having a horse project on their enrollment card. These practices are open to anyone who wishes to attend and youth does not not have to be listed as a Horse project to attend. Project groups are welcomed and encouraged to do some of their own training as well. Things to keep in mind: Please review the Delaware 4-H Horse Judging Contest Leaders Guide for references. Also contact the Kent County office, your club leader, or your project leader for more information. Be familiar with what the scorecards look like and how to fill them out. Youth are encouraged to compete in the county contest. Youth that qualify for the state contest can chose to compete during the Delaware State Fair or notify organizers before the start of the fair that they are unable to attend, thus allowing an alternate to compete. Organizers may offer additional contests including skill-a-thon, mentoring programs and more. Club leaders are encouraged to offer training and practices.
