The OSU Farm Dog Study

Researchers at OSU are performing this study to improve our

understanding of dog ownership within the Ohio farming com-

munity. The knowledge we gain from this study will help us to

better serve Ohioans and dog owners by promoting animal

health and disease prevention. Findings may give us infor-

mation to help prevent certain diseases transmitted between

animals and people. All costs (mailing, supplies) are paid by

the researchers. Participation is completely voluntary and confi-

dential. Total time commitment for participants is about 20

minutes.

Club & Committee News

Portage Prime Producers

Greetings! We are Portage Prime Producers, a new 4-H club featuring swine, rabbits, chickens, and tur-

keys. Our first meeting was held on Sunday, February 22nd and the following officers were elected: Presi-

dent: Emma Urban, Vice President: Darla Derthick, Secretary: Morgan Chesla, Treasurer: Shelby More-

head, Historian/News Reporter: Bella Wagner, and

Recreational Leader: Madelyn Rennecker. The club

is led by advisors Amy and Russ Rennecker.

At the first meeting it seemed everyone agreed on a

common motive for the club- to be better educated

about 4-H and our projects and to help each other be

the best we can be. To follow up on this, the majority

of the club attended the OSU Jr. Swine Day on March

22nd at either the Columbus or Wooster location.

Here, the group learned about picking out your pig

and what characteristics the best pigs should fit, the

different parts of the carcass and how to measure

back fat, the different types of feed and the health of

a pig, the different diseases that are very common to

look out for, and how to prepare your pig and your-

self for the show ring. At our additional meetings, our

group is studying hard for our upcoming county skill-

a-thon and we can’t wait to see all our hard work

shine at the fair!

News for Rabbit Hopping!

rabbits trained and ready for the expo at fair!

We have been learning about correct har-

nesses for jumping, setting up the jumps

and mats, and how to guide the rabbit to

stay on the mat. Currently we have been

able to get some rabbits up to 4 and 5 poles

jumped! For more information regarding

Rabbit Hopping, Please contact Tina Mann

at 330-808-1971 or [email protected].

If you would like to have us bring out some

rabbits for your club, we can schedule that

as well.
