Dear Friends,

Kendal and Chandler Hall have known each other well for more than 40 years and recognize how closely our values, cultures and missions align. Since the approval of its strategic plan in June 2009, Chandler Hall has thoughtfully explored an affiliation with other organizations. After a thorough and reflective journey, Chandler Hall has affiliated with Kendal. Seeing its future from a position of strength, Chandler Hall determined that it would benefit from the collective sharing throughout the Kendal System of model practices—such as clinical, business, innovation, technical and planning practices—as well as benefit from operational efficiencies not available to a single-site organization.

For its part, Kendal appreciates the wide array of services that Chandler Hall offers and its willingness to share knowledge and experience with other Kendal Affiliates. For example, Chandler Hall’s intergenerational, Adult Day Health, Medicare Home Health, and current and expanding Palliative Care programs are initiatives that help meet the needs of many older adults who want to have a choice of where and when they receive services. These programs are of great interest to other Kendal Affiliates.

Chandler Hall’s future will include an invigorating blend of increased campus-based residential living and broadened community services. Kendal looks forward to collaborating with Chandler Hall to increase investments in its campus and expanding its services to meet the evolving needs of its residents, family members, staff and neighbors in the larger Newtown community.

We hope that you will visit Chandler Hall when you have an opportunity and spread the word about this newest Kendal Affiliate to those you know who may have interest in living at Chandler Hall. For more information, please visit Chandler Hall’s website, www.ChandlerHall.org, or call or write to us at Kendal if you have any questions.

Chandler Hall, a nonprofit community founded in the Quaker tradition, has grown substantially over its four-decade history. Forty years ago, the doors of what was then called the Friends Nursing Home opened for its first resident. A few years later, the Adult Day Health Program became the second of what is now a comprehensive spectrum of health services. A Hospice and Home Health Program was added the following year, and in 1988, the Child Development Program began to welcome infants, toddlers and children to the campus. This eventually led forward-thinking staff members to initiate the Intergenerational Programming that has stood as a hallmark of Chandler Hall for more than 25 years.

The Josephine Muller Residence opened in 1993 and for many years provided care to residents with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) through a collaborative effort with the ALS Association of Greater Philadelphia. Chandler Hall saw national recognition as Hillary Clinton, then the First Lady, came for a visit in 1994. The highly regarded Heacock Hospice Pavilion was expanded in 2001 and provides 14 beds for those in need, allowing families to focus on the emotional concerns of hospice care.

The largest addition to Chandler Hall occurred in 2000 and 2001 with the opening of four Manor Houses that provide both residential (also known as independent) living and personal care environments for approximately 100 residents in studio and one-bedroom apartments. Chandler Hall also has a small number of large two-bedroom residences.

The completion of the Fox Commons Building in 2003 allowed for the expansion of the Adult Day and Child Development areas, as well as a fitness center, spa and country store. Chandler Hall is known as a place where each individual is treated with mutual respect and caring.

Initially conceived as a nursing home by its Quaker founders, Chandler Hall has grown steadily since opening its doors in March 1973. The continuum of care now includes residential living, personal care, nursing care and hospice accommodations.

The Residential (aka Independent) Style of Living offers two types of accommodations:

• Loft and Cottage apartments—essentially large two-bedroom residences.

• Residential Living apartments are studio and one-bedroom apartments within a common house. Various fee structures apply.

Personal Care residences are located in the Manor Houses and the Hicks Residence:

• The four Manor Houses offer assistance with daily living and unique memory support programs in studio and one-bedroom apartments. Residents are billed monthly.

• The Hicks Residence provides care for those in

need of a higher level of care than in a Manor House apartment. Daily rates are based on the level of care that the resident receives in private and semi-private accommodations.

The Friends Nursing Home accommodates those in need of skilled nursing care. Most residents receive long-term care, and short-term rehabilitation stays are provided on a space-available basis.

The Heacock Hospice Pavilion is a residential hospice area designed with a home-like environment. An individual in need of hospice care can enter the Pavilion or receive licensed hospice care through the Hospice at Home Program.

Respite stays ranging from two days to two months are available in the Hicks Residence and Manor Houses, all licensed personal care residences. A short-term stay is sometimes necessary when a caregiver is temporarily unavailable, or someone needs extra assistance before going home after a medical event.

Chandler Hall’s History

A Mutually Beneficial Relationship

The Community Community Enhancements

Mission: As guided by the Quaker principle of seeking that of God in everyone, Chandler Hall offers an array of quality services to enrich the lives of aging individuals, families and caregivers.Vision: Chandler Hall’s vision is to seek innovative solu-tions that support and enhance the lives of individuals as they age.Values: Chandler Hall is committed to achieving the follow-ing Values in a fiscally responsible manner:• Provide a caring and warm environment• Respect diversity and honor generational differences and

individual uniqueness• Recognize and uphold the dignity of individuals in the

Chandler Hall community• Offer access to an array of quality, person-centered care

services• Maintain an excellent working environment that pro-

motes professionalism, innovation and personal growth• Nurture individuality and talents to achieve optimal

wellness and performance• Strive to be both socially accountable and attentive to our

relationships in the external community.

As nonprofit organizations founded on Quaker values, both Kendal and Chandler Hall share a commitment to the spirit of community, collaboration, inclusion and respect for the individual that flows from the principles of the Religious Society of Friends. Both opened their doors to residents in 1973, and they have maintained cordial relations over many decades. Initial discussions about an affiliation began in Sep-tember 2011 and evolved rapidly over the next 20 months based on the recognition that both parties had much to gain from a formal affiliation.

Chandler Hall’s master planning initiative called for an affiliation with another strong organization that could ben-efit from and help build on Chandler Hall’s own strengths to broaden its programs and services for older adults.

Chandler Hall explored affiliating with other Quaker-based organizations, but determined that Kendal was the best fit for its future plans and needs.

As a Kendal Affiliate, Chandler Hall will continue as an independently owned and operated, nonprofit organization governed by its own volunteer Board of Directors. Kendal will provide support services to Chandler Hall in the areas of operations, finances, technology, planning and marketing.

With Chandler Hall, the Kendal System gains an Affiliate that has a well-earned reputation for quality, provides ser-vices that many other Kendal Affiliates would like to emu-late and has strong board and staff leadership. Other Kendal Affiliates can learn much from Chandler Hall’s highly re-garded home health, hospice care and adult day programs.

Chandler Hall is well-known for its Community Programs, which bring a liveliness and engagement that in many ways help transform the experience of aging.

• The Adult Day Health Program enables clients to attend a varied and interactive day program that includes a nutritious lunch and a healthy snack.

• The Home Health Program offers restorative care for those needing therapy after a medical event, as well as Palliative or Hospice Care.

• The Wellness Center is a primary care provider for many of the residents and is open to clients from the local community.

• The Child Development Program allows residents and clients the opportunity to interact with children and grow with one another.

• Other Community Programs include on-campus aquatics and fitness programs under the direction of the YMCA. Chandler Hall residents use these areas free of charge.

Kendal plans to collaborate with Chandler Hall on an expansion of its independent living residences and of its services to meet the evolving needs of its residents, family members, staff and neighbors in the larger Newtown community.
