Thursday, 28th July 2016 Term 3 Week 1 Dear Parents and Caregivers, He mihi tenei kia koutou nga matua, me nga kaitiaki o a tatou tamariki. Tena koutou katoa Welcome to Term 3 at Kenakena School. I hope you were able to enjoy some extra
time with your children during their holiday break.
I extend a warm welcome to families new to Kenakena School this term. If I haven’t
met you yet, please call in to see me.
KENAKENA WELCOMES INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
Kenakena has welcomed five new international students to our school this term. On
Monday four students from Shenzhen in China were met at Wellington Airport by their
host families, who will be looking after them for the four weeks they are at Kenakena.
This follows a meeting I had with their parents in Shenzhen in April. The four students;
Haochen Pan, Wing Tung Lin, Shan Zhang and Xi Zhang will learn in Years 7&8 Classes
in the Kauri Team and have a range of exciting activities arranged for them to enjoy
during their time here. Being in New Zealand and at Kenakena gives them the
opportunity to practice their English and to experience a different culture and
education system.
Our students from Shenzhen met their host families at Wellington Airport on Monday.
Gamin Kim from South Korea has also joined us and will be here until November.
EXCITING PROFESSIONAL COLLABORATION WITH OUR COLLEGES
I announced at the end of last term that we are collaborating with Paraparaumu College
on a $150 000 project with a focus on personalised learning through effective use of
ICT in Years 7 to 10. This has been made possible through a successful application
for the Ministry of Education’s Teacher-Led Innovation Fund. The application was
driven by Aaron Mead and Fiona Jeffries from Paraparaumu College who approached
Kenakena earlier this year to gauge our interest. The project provides a significant
budget for teacher release and professional development for our Years 7&8 teachers
over the next two years. The full press release can be read on our Facebook Page at
https://www.facebook.com/Kenakena-School-393417717371782/?fref=ts .
We have been collaborating with Kapiti College on joint marketing for international
students since 2009. On my recent visit to China I was able to engage in further
marketing with Kapiti College’s Paul Western and Steve Burt, along with ex-Kenakena
parent Rose Hu. My visit was partially funded by an Education New Zealand Grant of
$2875. Our two schools have been successful in securing another Education New
Zealand International Education Growth Fund grant of $50 000. This will assist both
schools with further marketing in China.
WINTER SPORTS
The winter sports season continues. If you’re a spectator parent, please set a good
example. Fun is by far the most prevalent reason given for children’s participation in
sport.
“Be a Sport. Show your Support”
Encourage your child, and other people’s children, in their efforts in sport
Insist that your child plays within the rules and plays fairly
Respect your child’s efforts the same regardless of whether s/he has won or lost
Display self-control on the side-line. Always be positive. Do not ridicule players or shout at them in a negative fashion.
Watch your child play and let him/her enjoy the game
HOME SAMPLE FOLDERS
Your children’s Home Sample Folders need to be returned to school this week. Please
ensure you have written an encouraging comment in the space provided.
We look forward to an exciting, motivating and positive term at Kenakena School!

SCOOTER STOLEN
One of our students had a scooter stolen from outside the Kenakena 4 Square at
5.26pm on Monday evening. The offence was caught on their security camera but we
are hoping it can be returned to school before the matter needs to be taken any
further.
PARAPARAUMU COLLEGE 2017 ENROLMENTS
Enrolment Forms for Year 9 students may be returned to the Kenakena School Office on or before Friday 12 August. These forms will then be collected by the College. After this date, enrolment applications should be delivered or posted to the College directly.
LOST PROPERTY
We still have a Kathmandu raincoat at the office that was found outside last term.
DENTAL CLINIC
If you need to make a dental appointment for your child you can phone 0800 825583.
Sore Throats Still Matter
Rheumatic fever is preventable
Sore throats matter, and if your child has a sore throat then it is important that they get it
checked by their doctor or attend a sore throat clinic, if there is one in your area.
Sore throats can be caused by a certain type of germ. (Group A streptococcal
bacteria, commonly known as a ‘Strep throat’). If this germ is not treated, it may
cause rheumatic fever and permanent damage to the heart.
Rheumatic fever is preventable. Treatment can be as simple as making sure your
child is treated for strep throat with antibiotics taken once a day for 10 days.
To prevent other people in the family getting strep throat, you should make sure that
everyone in the house with a sore throat gets checked by a doctor, as the germ can be
transferred from person to person through ‘saliva’ e.g. sharing drinks or food. To prevent
‘strep throat’ spreading, people should cover their mouth when they cough or sneeze.
More information on rheumatic is available by visiting the Ministry of Health website at
www.health.govt.nz/rheumaticfever
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your school’s Public Health Nurse on 04 570 9002.
Calling all old Mobile Phones to help Sustainable Coastlines look after
NZ’s coastlines and waterways.
It would be great if you could rummage around in your drawers and toy boxes and bring into
School any unwanted mobile phones you may have.
Phones collected help our School gain valuable rewards and also the environment benefits
by keeping our landfills free of mobile phones and their array of hazardous toxic
substances.
