Thursday, 11th February 2016 Term 1 Week 2 Dear Parents and Caregivers, He mihi tenei kia koutou nga matua, me nga kaitiaki o a tatou tamariki. Tena koutou katoa The school year at Kenakena is off to a very good start. The following diagram gives an
overview of what the teaching staff is working on in 2016. It includes specific learning focuses,
specific focuses for professional development for teachers and information on what we are
reviewing. I’ve included a glossary below the diagram to act as a guide.
Glossary:
PLD: Professional Learning and Development
KK: Kenakena
BYOD: Bring Your Own Devices
OTJ: Overall Teacher Judgement (relating to student assessment)
Moderation Guidelines: The guidelines we use to determine the accuracy of the assessment of completed work
Pedagogy: Effective Strategies for Learning
Teacher Dashboard: An online tool for teachers to manage student work in the Google environment.
TAI: Teaching as Inquiry. The process on analysing the results of teaching to determine the effectiveness of the process and make decisions on ‘where to next’ in order to improve learning outcomes for children.
NES: National Education Standards
Student Voice: Including the ‘voice’ of students in the learning and teaching process.
E-Learning: (‘E’ for Electronic): Blending the use of electronic devices into the learning process.

NATIONAL ‘GO-BY-BIKE’ DAY
Two hundred and eighteen children and thirteen staff biked to Kenakena School yesterday for
'Go-By-Bike' Day. Many parents also accompanied their children on the ride to school, where
the bike racks were overflowing! Children who biked to school were treated to a hot Milo and
spot prizes were awarded. Kenakena staff and children laid out an obstacle course for
Morning Interval and Lunchtime breaks, which proved to be very popular with children of all
ages. Noah Aliva (7) was heard to say, "This is the best morning tea ever!" I was thrilled with
the great response to 'Go By Bike' Day and hope that the impetus is maintained with children
continuing to enjoy riding to school. Thanks to Shona McDonald for organizing Kenakena’s
participation.

FAMILY CONTRIBUTION
Thank you to the families who have already paid a total of $2288 for the FAMILY
CONTRIBUTION! It’s a fantastic start although we still have a way to go to meet our budget.
The FAMILY CONTRIBUTION is used to support learning and teaching programmes for your
children through the provision of human and material resources in 2014. The Board of
Trustees would welcome payment of the Family Contribution from all families by the end of
Term 1, which will attract a discount, as detailed below, in addition to being in the draw for a
$100 Pak’n’Save voucher.
The Family Contribution can be paid by placing it in the RED BOX in Administration Foyer. A
receipt will be sent home with your child. The Family Contribution is Tax Deductible.
$75 per child per year (18.75 per term), discounted to $65 if paid in full in the first term.
OR
$145 per family (2 or more children) per year ($36.20 per term) discounted to $130 per
family if paid in full in the first term.
We have EFTPOS facilities available for your convenience.
Our Statements of Financial Performance show that Kenakena School demonstrates good
financial management and control. In this context, the Family Contribution is used prudently
and wisely.
For parents of children in Years 7&8, the Technology Materials Fee is due and should be paid
by the end of this term. The Raumati Technology Centre charges Kenakena School for the
materials children use to construct the things that they make and we, in turn, need to claim
this from you.
