Citation preview
On more than one occasion over recent years I
have shared these thoughts and expressed these
ideas. It seems they are still being applicable today. This month we celebrate a crucial moment in the
history of our nation - the signing of the
Declaration of Independence. And as we look back
at that event, we need to realize that it was a
fateful and very dangerous decision for each man
who dared to sign that Declaration.
In fact, as John Adams signed it, he said, "Whether
we live or die, sink or swim, succeed or fail, I stand
behind this Declaration of Independence. And if
God wills it, I am ready to die in order that this
country might experience freedom."
It was that kind of patriotism which led men,
armed with little more than hunting rifles, to
engage in battle with England, the most powerful
nation in the world.
The local pilots on the Outer Banks risked their
lives, ferrying supplies through the shallow inlets
and up the sounds and rivers to supply our troops
in the fight for freedom. Many of our forefathers
gave their life in the Revolutionary War, so that you
and I might be citizens of this "land of the free and
home of the brave."
But what we often forget is that in declaring their
independence from England, our forefathers made
an equally strong “Declaration of Dependence”
upon Almighty God.
The second paragraph of the Declaration of
Independence begins with these words: "We hold
these truths to be self-evident, that all men are
created equal, that they are endowed by their
Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that
among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of
Happiness."
The closing words of their Declaration solemnly
states: "With a firm reliance on the protection of
divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each
other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred
Honor."
In this time of what appears to be elevated
religious persecution and political turmoil in our
nation and around the world, there is evidence the
United States is rapidly forgetting the God of our
fathers, the God who gave this nation its birth and
its greatness.
Our human nature has not changed; therefore, the
cross is still the way to freedom from sin, 2000
years later and it is vitally important that we the
people of the United States of America remember
this declaration of our dependence upon God.

We are now accepting
applications for the 2019 –
2020 school year. The children will need to be
three by August 31, 2019. Anyone interested in
enrolling a child in Preschool can contact Becky
Beacham 473-5313 or Denise Mann 216-6373 to
get an application.
The Bethany United Methodist Church Preschool
will be extending its days next year. A three day or
five day plan will be offered. The hours will remain
the same: 8:30 am to 12:00 noon. The parents will
have a choice of what works best for them and
their child. If the child attends three days, the cost
will be $100.00 a month, and the five day cost will
be $160.00 a month.

The Preschoolers had a busy and fun month
during May. They had a luncheon on Thursday,
May 23rd at 11:30. The luncheon was in the
church parking lot. Spencer Yachts loaned the
Preschool a grill. We had hamburgers and hot dogs
that the Preschool daddys cooked. Before the
luncheon
Crystal and her husband, John, put a water slide on the Preschool playground. The Preschoolers put on their swim suits and took turns sliding down the water slide and playing on the playground. The children loved the water slide.
When it was time for the luncheon the Preschoolers came to the front parking lot said the grace and then went to their parents. Everyone enjoyed the luncheon. There were 70 people at the luncheon.
On Thursday, May 30th, the Preschoolers went to the Island Farm. They saw the sheep, then they went to the house where a lady showed them how a family lived. The children then went to the kitchen and saw a cooking demonstration. The children then saw the animals. They got to see and pet a chicken. They saw the garden and all the vegetables.They saw the cow. They enjoyed going to the Island Farm. On Thursday, May 30th, the Preschoolers had their end of year program and graduation at 7:00 in the church sanctuary. The Preschoolers marched into the sanctuary as Mrs. Gayle played the song, "The Battle Hymn Of The Republic." Mrs. Gayle welcomed all the people. The Preschoolers pledged allegiance to the flag and sang, "My Country Tis Of Thee." They sang "Mr. Sun," "Days Of The Week," and "The ABC Song." The Preschoolers counted from 1 to 75 and spelled their names. They sang holiday songs "Five Little Pumpkins," "Skin And Bones," "Five Fat Turkeys," "See My Feathers," "Away In A Manger," "Love Somebody," "Alive, Alive," and "Mommy, Mommy I Love You." Then they sang the Bible songs, "Jesus Loves Me," "Daniel In The Lion's Den," "Noah's Ark," "Who Did Swallow Jonah," "The Wise Man And The Foolish Man," and "Peter, James, And John In A Sailboat." Next the graduates marched in with “God Of The Ages.” The graduates were Callan Rhoads, Gabe Scarborough, Macon Pearce, and Pierce Boyd. Mrs. Gayle gave them a diploma. These four will be going to Kindergarten in the fall. This was the end of the program. Mrs. Gayle thanks God to have been the Preschool teacher for 30 years, and also thanks Becky and the Preschool Board for their support.
School is out and
summer is in full
swing! The kids are
happy and excited!
The sun is up longer and the kids love the extra
outdoor time. We have had volleyball matches and
basketball games. And we have learned about the
fruits of the spirit and what each one means. We
put a lot of emphasis on “self-control.” The
summer is always our favorite time of the year!
On Wed June 19th we went to the His Generation
concert. It stormed with rain, thunder, and
lightening. The kids waited for 2+ hours in one
room and eventually we got in to see a more
intimate show with Crowder and Colton Dixon in
the theatre at Festival Park. The concert was very
special and you could definitely feel the Holy Spirit
in the room! It was an awesome experience! The
kids were amazing; so patient and calm the entire
time we waited! We are very proud of our kids and
their behavior! They represented Bethany very well
that night!
For the past couple months, the older youth have
been taking a confirmation class with Pastor Ken
and Paula. We are proud to announce we have 8
new members at Bethany! Rylee Payne, Savannah
Durand, Kiana Willis, Katie Durand, Meade
Shackelford, Ryder Payne, Aiden Coronado, and
Kaden Saienni! We are so proud of you and can’t
wait to see what your spiritual journey brings the
world! Go and be the light!
Thank you to all our volunteers and people who support our kids. It’s because of you all that the kids of Wanchese have a place to get a meal, have GOOD fun, a safe place, a family, and most importantly a place to get to know God!

Like a dieter with the best of intentions, I had a
plan of serving a low-carb meal in June…that is,
until I fell off the wagon. The Source and Roanoke
Island Food Pantries texted Thursday morning
saying they had decadent desserts galore from the
Fresh Market. They arrived in their sticky, over-
the-top, too-much-icing glory, and there was
nothing to do but use them up.
I felt a little better when I showed a picture of
our finished meal to Eric Solderholm of our
Wanchese Secotan Farmers Market. He and his
wife, Ladd, donated turnips that were raised in the
field behind the Market. When he saw the roasted
vegetable mix of sweet potatoes, red potatoes,
yellow squash, and his pink and white turnips, he
exclaimed, “People will be eating healthy, and they
won’t even know it!”
The organizers of the Wanchese Community
Foundation Fund Raiser had some extra smoked
and hand-chopped barbecue, and thoughtfully
donated it to us. We were also given a variety of
beans and some fresh corn, so a cold bean salad
was made. Crisp cucumbers in sour cream and dill
brought a taste of summertime.
Many of our recipients have had changes in their
health (and quite a few were in the hospital), and
were unable to accept a meal this month. I went
down the prayer list and added people that I
thought might be encouraged by a meal, a friendly
visit, and our church newsletter.
The children turned out in full force, bringing
enthusiasm and energy to our meal packaging day.
The older girls are very helpful in the kitchen.
We served 182 meals at $0.38 per person with
12 children and 18 adult volunteers.

made coffee
and set up the
breakfast
area. She has
been faithful,
serving her
Lord and the members of our church with a quiet smile
and a sweet spirit. Now, she desires to “retire” from
this duty. She has wanted this for a year, but no one
has stepped forward to relieve her. If you would like to
help Jane and Bethany in this way, please see Nancy

DARE SUB-DISTRICT MEETS WITH WANCHESE
CHURCH
The Dare Sub-district of the Woman’s Society of
Christian Service met on Oct. 16, at the Methodist
church in Wanchese.
The theme for the day was “The Spirit of Christ
for All of Life.” The meeting was conducted by
Mrs. R.D. Wise, the chairman. The opening hymn
was “O, Master of the Waking World.” Mrs. F.J.
Duplissy, the district spiritual life secretary, gave a
beautiful devotional in keeping with the theme.
Mrs. J.W. Davis gave the welcome and was
responded to by Mrs. Linwood Tillett. An offering
was taken and Rev. Warren, the host pastor,
offered prayer. The district officers and visitors
were recognized. Those present were: Mrs. N.L.
Mixon, district president, Mrs. Richard Peede, vice
president, Mrs. J.W. Davis, recording secretary,
Mrs. L.S. Thompson, treasurer, Mrs. J.H. Brown,
promotion secretary, Mrs. W.E. Brown, missionary
education secretary, Mrs. Eddie Harrell, supply
work, Mrs. Arnold Daniels, children’s work, Mrs.
Dallas Tillett, status of women, Mrs. F.J. Duplissy,
spiritual life, Mrs. M.O. Fletcher, public relations,
and Rev. and Mrs. Guthrie, a retired minister and
his wife. The roll was called by societies and
committees were appointed. Two life
memberships were presented. Mrs. Raymond
Wescott presented one to her mother, Mrs.
Patrick and Mrs. Elmer Midgett presented one to
Mrs. Alvenia Etheridge. Officers training clinics
were held, after which we adjourned for lunch.
After lunch, a prelude of special music was
played by Mrs. Dallas Tillett. Mrs. Willie Hooper
led the devotional with prayer by Mrs. Rosa Dean,
and singing of hymn “When the Whole World Lives
For Him.” Reports of the committee were given.
Manns Harbor society invited the sub-district to
meet with them in the spring.
A short memorial service was held by Mrs. Doris
Bonner, in honor of Mrs. Noah Forbes of Wanchese
and Mrs. Beulah Jennette of Manteo.
The goals were very effectively presented by
Mrs. J.H. Brown. The closing meditation was given
by Mrs. N.L. Mixon. Mrs Duplissy dismissed with
prayer.
Maiya Riberio helped our church by emailing the
family photographs that were taken on Easter Sunday.

A prayer for the Fourth
Loving God, we thank you — the true Father of our country — for the blessings of this land and the gifts of cultures around the world. Prompt us to strive for justice for all, at home and abroad. Remind us, in the words of the hymn, that “this is our Father's world” and that your goodness prevails. Amid tragedies and conflicts, guard us against despair. Help us focus on the kindness evident daily: from generous neighbors to conscientious public servants (because most are). On Independence Day and every day, “O let [us] ne’er forget that though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the Ruler yet.” Amen.
