This is Kempston’s first home league game to be played on a Saturday since BedfordTown in mid September. It is an opportunity for Rovers to improve their home record inthe league this season.

Dunstable Town gained promotion to the Southern League in 2014, going through theentire Spartan South Midlands League season unbeaten. They only briefly stayed indivision one, winning back to back promotions (much to the chagrin of Kettering Town, ask some of the Town fans about that one). Town spent four seasons in the PremierDivision of the Southern League, a twelfth place was the best that they could manage inthat time. They finished bottom of the league last season, despite taking the relegationfight to the very last game of the campaign. Much was made of the money problems thatthe club had last season, very publicly admitting that they were not paying players at allin a bid to keep the club going.

Kempston Rovers 135 years of Football History

Kempston Rovers were formed in 1884 and entered the Bedford &District League. Rover’s first league championship was won in 1908and twelve months later Rover’s retained the title while also carryingoff the Bedfordshire Senior Cup and North Beds Charity Cup. The Walnut Boys, the club’s official nickname, comes from the largewalnut orchard in Kempston around the time of foundation. Thisidentity is carried forward by one of the main supporters’ groups at theclub, “The Nuts on Tour”.1973 saw the start of a new era as Kempston relocated to a new

ground further down Hillgrounds Road. A magnificent season saw the Walnut Boys storm to thePremier title losing only once in 32 games. A golden period in the club's history saw League Cupsuccesses in 1975 and 1977; the Beds Senior Cup was again captured in 1977 while the WalnutBoys reached the last 16 of the FA Vase in 1975. In 1986, the club moved again, this time to thecurrent ground, their third in the same road.Kempston last won the county’s highest honour, the Beds. Senior Cup, in 1992, the fourth timethe trophy has come to Hillgrounds. In 2002 Kempston Rovers and Kempston Colts began an alliance to pool resources/personnelunder the name AFC Kempston. The youth teams at Rovers still go by the name “Colts”, keepingthe history of youth football in the town alive. The beginning of 2005 saw the start of major re-developments at Hillgrounds Road with thebuilding of new changing facilities and the building of an artificial training pitch, which is availableto book all year round for training sessions, small sided games or just a kick around with friends. The new ground facilities were completed in 2006 and along with a new stand; on-going groundimprovements and the existing clubhouse refurbished and ready to hire for functions and events,Kempston now have some of the best facilities in the area for non-league football.Midway through the 2013-14 season James Stoyles and Gary Flinn took over the 1st Teammanagerial duties before, in 2015-16, Rovers won the United Counties Football League PremierDivision, with a thrilling final win on the last day of the season, a campaign in which they only lostone league game. This resulted in promotion and saw us move into the Southern League DivisionOne which represents the highest level we have attained within the FA pyramid system so far.Since promotion, the club has twice narrowly missed out on a place in the end of seasonpromotion play offs. On both occasions, finishing above some of the more established sides inthe division. The club currently operates one of the largest youth systems in the county, with over thirty sidesat various age groups and a senior development side. There is a supporters’ club that holdsvarious functions throughout the season to support the first team.

Kempston Rovers, 135 years in the making and we’re not done yet.

DTFC Management Team

1st Team Manager, Tony McCool. Tony has enjoyed a long and successful coaching and scoutingcareer with clubs at the highest level, most recently at Norwich City & Bradford City respectively. Tony's own promising playing career came to a premature end due to a serious injury. Tony was a key figure in Mick Hartford's Luton Town coaching staff helping bring home the Johnson's Paint Trophy in front of 40,00 Lutonians at Wembley in April 2009. Knowledgeable and passionate about the game, among Tony’s special skill set is the developmentof young talent. The loss of two key players from last season’s squad in the close season, to professional clubs, where both players have signed professional contracts is testament, if any wasneeded, to the depth of ability this man possesses.

1st Team Coach and Football Advisor. Kevin Gallen. Kevin played nearly 400 first team games for QPR in two spells achieving cult status among R's fans. Kevin notched up 547 professional games all told and found the net 136 times. Kevin represented England at both U18 & U21 levels.

1st Team Coach. Gareth Jackson. Gareth was drafted in to assist Tony & Kevin having been a part of DTFC's Development squad management team last year. It was Gareth's holistic approachand associated talents which fitted Tony's vision of DTFC being a Pathway club for players and staff which paved the way for the transition. Gareth is a licensed UEFA B coach and a Level 2 Futsal coach who founded the local Futsal Team.

Physio. Josh Kent. Second season at Creasey Park for our popular and talented physio.

History Part 1 The great escape towards Southern Premier League safety was sonearly secured in the last week of April 2018. Ultimately the heroicsof Tony McCool’s unpaid players went down to the wire but eventson and off the field concerning different opponents and rivalsconspired, as in the traditions of the best Greek Tragedies, saw therelegation trap door open for Dunstable Town at 4 50 pm on Saturday28th April away at Frome Town. Players sank to their knees as theemotion of the moment and the grim reality of the Club’s fate becameunbearable for even the strongest of men.

The Club had gone throughout the season 2017-18 without a playingbudget and without even being able to offer traveling expenses toplayers and staff. Every single person involved with the Clubvolunteered their services, time and expertise.

Nobody epitomised the spirit of Corinthian amateur more thanManager, Tony McCool, who not only worked hours most of uswould collapse under, but regularly picked up the school minibus ona Friday, from our friends at Weatherfield Academy, drove it to andfrom away matches, cleaned it out on a Sunday and then took it back, refuelled, to Weatherfield Academy, on a Monday.

A proven track record of helping develop young players achieve theirpotential, Tony has coached at QPR, Norwich and hometown club,Luton and scouted for Bradford City. His knack of seeing playerswith potential and then developing them fully proven with the closeseason news that two of last season’s players, Peter Kioso andAndrew Osei-Bonsu, both secured professional contracts testament toMcCool’s skills.

History Part 2

In May 2017, the Club stood on the verge of folding as the (former)Chairman & Board resigned their posts in the belief that they hadtaken the Club as far as they could, with appeals for greater publicsupport on match days falling largely on deaf ears. With theirresignation and uncertainty about the Club’s future management andplaying staff quickly followed, save for Gedeon Okito and JohnSonuga.

Numerically small, but as passionate as any die-hard footballsupporter, a group of the Club’s fans organised themselves and tookover the reins in order to save the Club from going under. With onlyenthusiasm and a passion for the Club to guide them this disparategroup of local government officials, an accountant, a former bankmanager and an educational consultant got to grips with themomentous task of running a football club competing at Step 3 in thepyramid.

Tony McCool appointed Gareth Jackson from the Development Teamto be his number two, and with support and advice from formerLuton & QPR legend, Kevin Gallen, a squad of hungry and talentedplayers were assembled from a group of 200 trialists.

How many of those 200 players were aware of the Club’s rich historythat boasts the presence of both George Best & Jeff Astle in the ranksof former notable players is not known. Kerry Dixon in more recenttimes wore the blue and white shirt with pride, and in the last coupleof years the Club nurtured the emerging talents of Luke Pennellbefore his move to Dagenham & Redbridge where he won his firstEngland C cap in the spring.

History Part 3Whilst last season was as tough as predicted, the Club has securedthe services of 2/3rds of last season’s squad for this season and hasput in place sufficient fund raising activities, and appointed aCommercial manager, to ensure that Tony McCool will have aplaying budget to help him attract and retain the type of players hebelieves he can help develop and who are the right fit for the Club.Big time Charlies and those with egos bigger than their talents neednot apply.

Last year despite the disappointment of relegation, the Clubdeveloped strong links with local schools, particularly WeatherfieldAcademy, our Community Partner School who kindly lend theirminibus for our players to travel to away fixtures. The Club recentlyreceived recognition for it’s off field work through the FACommunity Charter Standard Development Club award.

The Club’s move to becoming a members’ run club was rewarded bya doubling of the membership and a rise of over 20% in homeattendances. In addition a huge amount of time went into uniting thethree different sections of the Club under the DTFC umbrella whichis at last bearing fruit and gives cause for optimism for those wholove the Club like a member of their family.

This season the Club has linked up with Mind BLMK (Bedford,Luton, Milton Keynes) to help support the invaluable work Minddoes in the mental health field. Members of Mind will receive freetraining sessions at the Club and discounted admission to homegames. In addition we will arrange collections at selected homegames and publish articles and highlight local Mind groups’ activitieson our website and digital programme.

Last season’s Southern League Division One champions, Beaconsfield Town arrived atHillgrounds on the back of some good recent form and nearly took an early lead as Reece Yorkesaw a fourth minute header loop into the arms of Martin Conway. Rovers were looking to thereferee on five minutes as Ben Shepherd floated a free kick into the box, Shane Bush looked tohave been hauled to the ground in the middle, stopping him from making any contact with theball but the referee was unmoved. A smart counter attack nearly saw Rovers hit the front as TyDeacon and Bush combined to set up Luke Heneghan, the midfielder’s curling shot was tippedfor a corner by the exentric Constable in the Rams goal. A breathless opening ten minutes wascapped with the opening goal for the visitors, a corner was floated in and headed back across goalby Louis Stead, to find Daniel Brown waiting to bundle the ball home. The game became veryphysical and frustrating as the referee seemed to mither between what was strong physical playand what was foul conduct. Rovers created their equaliser just before the half hour. A throw inthe left hand channel was worked into the box by a combination of Harlem Sambu and BenAcquaye. Ben Shepherd picked up the batton on the corner of the area and hit a volley on the turnthat dipped and swerved, seemingly through Constable for one all. Bush was put through by TyDeacon, but was thwarted by the onrushing keeper. Tony Mendy hit the post at the other end ashe battled well to get the ball out of the corner. Before the break came Rovers’ best chance of thegame, as Deacon again found Bush. The forward beat Constable to the ball, but his contact on theshot was a half ounce too light as Vassell was able to scramble back and clear from the goal line.

The second half began with a strong intent from Rovers, as Deacon and Heneghan forcedConstable into action early on. Louis Stead forced a stunning save from Martin Conway as hisfree kick was heading in to the top corner, only to be denied by the flying figure of Conway atfull stretch. Just after the hour mark, Rovers had to be at their defensive best as Beaconsfieldattempted to turn the screw, with shots flying in in quick succession, Kempston threw bodies inthe way to keep the score level. The game then settled into a easier pace, but came back to life inthe dying five minutes. A Rovers corner into the box created chaos and Constable dropped theball on the goal line, he recovered the fumble and breathed a sigh of relief as the half heartedappeals that it had crossed the line hadn’t moved the officials. There was time for one finalchance for the visitors as well, Brendan Matthew seized on a backpass and cut the ball back intothe middle. Both sides were screaming for the foul, Rovers thought Mendy in the centre hadhandled, while Beaconsfield were convinced he was pushed. Not for the first time, the refereewas not in the mood and did nothing.

The two sides will replay to a conclusion on Tuesday. For Kempston, it will be their ninth gamein the month of October. Rovers return to league action next weekend with a home game againstDunstable Town.

Match ReportRammed out of Trophy

By Matthew Wilmot Beaconsfield Town 3 – 1 Kempston Rovers

Rovers arrived at the home of the Rams looking to go further in the competition than ever before, buthopes of progress were firmly knocked into touch as the home side controlled the evening.

The game was barely four minutes old when the first warning shot was fired, Nathan Webb curling overthe Rovers bar from the edge of the box after some intricate build up play. Brendan Matthew then forcedMartin Conway into an early save, to sharply deny the forward at the near post. Fifteen minutes in,however, Callum Webb found some space on the left hand side of the box and after some jinking, hit across shot goalward. The ball found the net via a wicked deflection off the unfortunate Collard. Webbthen had another chance as he found freedom on the Rovers right, a mazy run and shot required anothersmart save from Conway. From their first meaningful attack of the game, in the twenty first minute,Rovers got level. A left wing cross from Josh Crawley wasn’t cleared properly and fell perfectly for BenAcquaye to fizz a volley past Constable in the Beaconsfield goal. Luke Heneghan then saw a shot flywide of the target as Kempston started to find their feet in the game. Charlie Losasso was the next Ramsplayer to test Conway, the keeper again produced a smart save to tip the ball round for a corner. With tenminutes to play before the break, the hosts were in front again. Brendan Matthew was played in throughthe middle and the former Egham frontman calmly slotted his effort beyond Conway. Heneghan forcedtwo good saves from Constable, who then showed the other side to his game, casually losing possessionon the edge of the box to Crawley who was allowed to set himself, but could only find the post with hisshot. The let off allowed Beaconsfield to keep their lead at the break.

In the second half, James Taylor, the leader of the Rams midfield quartet, had a first time snap shotsaved by Conway. Mason Spence was lucky to avoid a caution for a rash challenge in front of thedugouts, going in too recklessly. The referee deciding to speak with the player rather than show cards. On the hour, a free kick played in by Daly was nodded down into the path of Matthew, but theBeaconsfield striker’s tame header was saved. Two home subs then combined as Mendy’s scuffed shotfell kindly for Stead who flashed a volley just wide of goal. In the seventy first minute, hopes of aKempston come back were all but extinguished as Mason Spence was shown a straight red card for anoff the ball incident. It was the only time the referee reached for his cards all game, although therewasn’t too much complaint from players near the incident about the decision. With less than fifteenminutes to go, Rovers had a free kick on the half way line, Heneghan saw Constable standing well out ofhis goal, trying to organise his defence. The quick-thinking midfielder decided to chance his arm andshot at goal. With Constable scrambling, the ball dipped just over the bar. In stoppage time, Mendythought he had the chance to settle matters, but when clean through on goal, couldn’t make meaningfulcontact on the ball and stumbled. Beaconsfield did get the third goal they deserved in the fifth minute ofstoppage time, a breakaway saw Mendy square the ball across goal where O’Regan was waiting to taphome into the empty net for three one with the last kick of the game.

Kempston have equalled their best ever progress in the FA Trophy this season in making this round, butcouldn’t quite make it further. Attention now turns back to the league and a home game on Saturday withDunstable Town
