Holidays The school holidays for students will commence on Saturday 14th and finish on Monday 30th April. I wish everyone a relaxing and safe holiday. During these holidays I will be on a study tour to Singapore looking at and understanding the Singaporean Education System: the history; the current system; and the future vision. I will have the opportunity to explore the high-status of education within the Singaporean culture and examine teacher (principal) quality assurance mechanisms for ensuring and advancing high quality performance at all levels.

From the Deputy Principal …. Professional Development and Lane Clark Throughout Term 1 teachers have engaged in professional learning opportunities to develop and enhance their teaching practice, skills and knowledge. Professional learning was presented by both Kellyville Public School teachers and external educators. It addressed Gifted and Talented Education, Learning Sprints, Professional Development Plans and inquiry based learning. This week, Kellyville Public School welcomes back Lane Clark, a renowned Canadian educator, to work with our teachers on planning, unpacking curriculum and thinking and learning processes. Several of our staff are working with Lane today and tomorrow Lane is working with 4S students and lots of teachers.

SRC Cupcake Day Congratulations to our SRC Members for raising over $1000.00 for those affected by the recent bushfires in Tathra. A huge thank you to the wonderful parents who baked cupcakes for our students to sell. Thank you also to Mrs Sutton and Mrs Workman for organising the day. I thoroughly enjoyed my morning tea

Ryan Year 5 Congratulations also to Ryan in 5/6V for using his initiative to add to the money raised on Cupcake Day. Ryan assisted his mother to bake a banana cake which they decorated with cream cheese icing. The cake was then taken to an office by a family friend and slices were sold for this worthy cause. An extra $20.00 was raised for the appeal. Thank you to Ryan and his mum.

Term notes and accounts A very large number of school contributions, technology levies and textbook and stationary accounts are now overdue. Prompt Payment would be appreciated. The school relies on your contributions to provide goods and services for your children and it is of concern that so many families have not paid their accounts. The school has already been billed for textbooks and stationary items that students are using. Invoices will be sent home today with Term 2 activity and permission notes.

P & C Disco Payment Closes Tomorrow, 11th April. On Friday, the P&C are holding a disco. Children are asked to wear their best disco clothes on the day. Please remember that payment is online only at www.flexischools.com.au by 11th April, 2018. Cost is $8.00 per child.

School Uniform change over The school uniform will change to winter on Monday, 14th May, after Mother’s Day. The school holidays will give you a chance to check if you need to purchase new or second hand items for your child/children.

Holidays Mr Bowman and I wish everyone in our school community a very safe and happy holiday

2019 Opportunity Class Information The application process for Year 5 opportunity class placement in 2019 is about to begin.

Dear Parent/Carer

Opportunity classes cater for highly achieving academically gifted students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. These classes help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gift-ed and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level.

Applications for opportunity class placement are considered mainly on the combined results of the Opportunity Class Placement Test and school assessments. The Opportunity Class Placement Test will be held on Wednesday 1 August 2018.

If you would like to have your child considered for Year 5 opportunity class entry in 2019, you need to apply soon. You will need to apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student’s email address).

Detailed instructions on how to apply online will be available from Tuesday 1 May 2018 at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5 . The application website opens on Tuesday 1 May 2018 and clos-es on Friday 18 May 2018. No late applications will be accepted.

There are no paper application forms. If you do not have internet access, you could apply at a public library. If you have a disabil-ity that prevents you from using a computer, you can contact the Unit for assistance after 1 May 2018.

You must submit only ONE application for each student.

Remember: The tear-off strip below is not an application and the school cannot apply on your behalf.

Yours sincerely

Mrs Jenny Walker

improving academic success.

Do you want your child to have improved academic performance?

This scientific study from The Netherlands has shown that learning a musical instrument will do just that. Enjoy reading:

Music Lessons Improve Children’s Cognitive Skills and Academic Performance

Neuroscience News March 26, 2018 Summary: According to a New Frontiers in Neuroscience study, children who participate in structured music lessons showed en-hancements in cognitive abilities over their peers who did not receive music lessons. The researchers note the improvements in short term memory, language based reasoning and planning seen in children who had music lessons had a positive impact on academic achievement.

Structured music lessons significantly enhance children’s cognitive abilities — including language-based reasoning, short-term memory, planning and inhibition — which lead to improved academic performance. Published in Frontiers in Neuroscience, the research is the first large-scale, longitudinal study to be adapted into the regular school curriculum. Music education has been decimated in schools around the globe, due to competition with academic subjects and an increasing lack of funding. These days, the opportunity to learn an instrument is seen as more of a luxury than a necessary part of education. “Despite indications that music has beneficial effects on cognition, music is disappearing from general education curricula,” says Dr Artur Jaschke, from VU University of Amsterdam, who led the study with Dr Henkjan Honing and Dr Erik Scherder. “This inspired us to initiate a long-term study on the possible effects of music education on cognitive skills that may underlie academic achievement.” The researchers conducted the study with 147 children across multiple Dutch schools, using a structured musical method

developed by the Ministry of Research and Education in the Netherlands together with an expert centre for arts education. All

schools followed the regular primary school curriculum, with some providing supplementary music classes. In these, the children

were given both theoretical and practical lessons.

After 2.5 years, the children’s academic performance was assessed, as well as various cognitive skills including planning, inhibition and memory skills. The researchers found that children who received music lessons had significant cognitive improvements compared to all other children in the study. “Children who received music lessons showed improved language-based reasoning and the ability to plan, organize and complete tasks, as well as improved academic achievement,” says Dr Jaschke. “This suggests that the cognitive skills developed during music lessons can influence children’s cognitive abilities in completely unrelated subjects, leading to overall improved academic performance. The researchers hope their work will contribute to highlighting the importance of the music and arts in human culture and cognitive development. “Music classes are supposed to be applied throughout all Dutch primary schools by the year 2020,” says Dr Jaschke. “But considering our results, we hope that this study will support political developments to reintegrate music and arts education into schools around the world.”
