SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE W.B. Kelly (1874-1948), called "Wild Bill" by his family and friends, was the oldest
child and only son of Major George Henderson Kelly. He followed in his father's
footsteps as an active newspaperman and Democrat Party member. He was elected to
three terms in the Arizona State Senate serving from 1931-33; 1933-35; and 1937-39.
The papers in the collection consist of correspondence with colleagues and constituents
during his terms as State Senator, reference materials he kept relevant to that office,
personal family letters, photographs, notes and manuscripts of family members and his
own, the latter in anticipation of writing his autobiography.
Major George Henderson Kelly (1854-1929) was a newspaperman, an active Democrat
Party member and an historian. Between the years 1887, when he moved his family to
Tucson, and 1929 when he died in Phoenix he was involved in the publishing of various
state newspapers. He was well known in Democrat Party activities and served as State
Historian under Governor George W. P. Hunt in 1923. The papers in this collection
reflect his close relationship with Gov. Hunt and other prominent political and social
people of this era.
Charles L. Rawlins (1875-1954) married Jennie V. Kelly, the daughter of George
Henderson Kelly. Rawlins practiced law in Graham County and in Phoenix. The
collection contains some of his papers dating form 1918 to 1928.
