January 2015
January 22nd Speaker: Kelly Cheney, Volunteer Coordinator for the Vancouver Police
Department
Sat March 21st Chipper Day
We had a brief meeting during our Holiday Party on Dec 3rd, introduced our 2014 Board
Members and thanked them for their service. Introduced our nominated Board for 2015 and
passed out paper ballots. The vote was unanimous and our 2015 Board of Directors for the
Vancouver Heights Neighborhood Association is: Chair: Miki Landis, Vice Chair: Barbara
Rhoden, Treasurer: Park Llafet, and Secretary: Jennifer Reed.
We also handed out a survey about interest in helping with VHNA projects throughout the
year which we collected at the end of the evening.
The party was a fun event including celebrating our 30th year as a Neighborhood
Association, Outrageous Holiday Sweater Competition, Favorite Dessert prize, and White
Elephant Gift Exchange Game as well as plenty of good food and fun.
November Neighborly Notes Correction
I thought I would clear up a possible misunderstanding regarding the short business meeting for an election
of officers at the holiday party.
Although the scheduling box in the November issue of Neighborly Notes indicated there was no meeting
scheduled for December, the newsletter also noted, “ December is when we nominate and elect the 2015
Board” .
My correction would change “no meeting in December” to “no business meeting the 4th Thursday in De-
cember, there will be a short business meeting at our holiday party on December 3rd to elect the Board.” I
apologize for any misunderstanding from this lapse.

VHNA will have the brush chipper from 8 a.m. until noon on Saturday, March 21. Look for it in the upper parking lot of Columbia Presbyterian Church at 8715 St. Helens Avenue.
This is a great opportunity to dispose of shrubs and all those limbs that came down during the strong winds in November and December. The chipper is for woody material only; it cannot process leaves or vines like blackberries or ivy.
You can dispose of leaves and vines in your yard debris cart or with the yard debris coupons that are scheduled to arrive with your garbage bill in early April. The chipper can accommodate limbs up to the size of a small tree stump. Wood does not need to be dried prior to chipping.
Free training from VPD benefits whole community If you have four hours a month to help the Neighbors On Watch (NOW) team fight crime, canvass for missing people, and find stolen automobiles, please plan to attend the Vancou-ver Heights Neighborhood Association meeting on January 22, 2015. Kelly Cheney, volun-teer coordinator for the Vancouver Police Department, will be on hand to talk about the benefits of volunteering as a citizen patroller, and how to apply for the NOW program.
NOW is a non-confrontational, highly visible, crime detection and prevention program. Citizens interested in partnering with the Vancouver Police Department to prevent crime are encouraged to apply by January 26, 2015 to become Neighbors On Watch (NOW) volunteers. All training is free and hosted by VPD. NOW volun-teers patrol the city neighborhoods on foot, bike, or by vehicle and act as additional “eyes and ears” for the police department.
If you live in the city limits of Vancouver, can successfully pass a background investigation, and are tired of crime, this may be a great fit for you. Contact Kelly at (360) 487-7467 for more information on participating in this very successful community oriented policing program. Police can’t be on every corner, but you can!
Notes from the Chair:
I hope the New Year finds you healthy and happy! I am delighted to serve you as
the Chairperson of the Vancouver Heights Neighborhood Association for 2015. I
purchased my home in the Heights 2 1/2 years ago and was thrilled to get into my first
choice neighborhood. I certainly have not been disappointed with the wonderful
neighbors I have met and truly enjoy the personality of our neighborhood. Tom Kent has done a wonderful
job as the Chair of VHNA for these past 2 years and I look forward to having his input as I jump into this new
position. One task I’ll be taking on this year is to update our Neighborhood Action Plan. This is vital to
ensure we have the goals in place that we need to support any requests for funding or support for special
projects from the City and other governmental agencies including traffic calming projects. You can read our
current Neighborhood Action plan at http://www.cityofvancouver.us/cmo/neighborhood/vancouver-heights
I would love to have your input on any updates we need to make to so our NAP reflects our current focus
and direction.
It will be great to hear from Kelly about the Neighbors On Watch program at our January 22nd meeting—
hope to see you there! Miki
Second Saturdays at the Water Resources Education Center are not only fun, they're free! Each second Saturday of the month, from 1 to 3 p.m., kids and their families are invited to explore a different topic through hands-on activities, games and stories. Create bird feeders and other crafts to welcome wildlife to your backyard! Learn about the amazing world of bubbles! Make a piece of art
from reused materials! There's always something new waiting at Second Saturdays!
Please note: Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
February: Love Your Trees February is a great month to show your love for trees! Trees are special - even those that have lost their leaves for the winter. Enjoy making various crafts from different parts of a tree. Kids and families are invited to join the fun and learn more while appreciating trees.
The City of Vancouver, Clark County and Waste Connections of Washington have partnered to provide residential customers with a handy resource for recycling, reusing and disposing of no-longer-needed items. The new RecycleRight App for smart phones and tablets is available for free through the Apple iTunes or GooglePlay stores. To access it fast, visit the City's website at www.cityofvancouver.us/recycling and click on your app store button. A web-version of the Recycling A-Z wizard is also available there, making it easy for everyone to use.

I want to thank all of the deliverers, and especially those who helped my husband Stan deliver newsletters last month in my absence. I understand it was very cold weather and yet you faithfully delivered. There were also several of you who stepped up and helped him by doing more than your
own route. And, without the newsletters there would not have been ‘a very fun’ Christmas party. Three cheers to our faithful deliverers! Eilene & Stan VanGrunsven
