News from Music Department

Over the past few weeks yYear 6 have made some fantastic progress learning the recorder. Most of the class have had some experience learning this instrument, but for most of them it was evident that this had not been for a while. The majority progressed extremely quickly and by their 6th lesson were already playing pieces with 8 notes. We’ve been practising rounds and have even begun learning our Christmas material with arrangements in different parts. This week yYear 6 have also been learning the Zulu words in their Lion King songs with ‘Lioness Hunt’, ‘Be Prepared’, and ‘You Live in Me’. We spent a lot of time rehearsing the articulation, control and vocal technique to sing these words expressively. Everyone is very excited about this show, even though they’re fully aware it’s a long wait!.

News from Reception What a fantastic half term we have had in Reception! It’s amazing to think of all that we have achieved in such a short amount of time. Personalities have blossomed, friendships have grown and a love of learning is certainly shining through. Our friendship fun day was a huge success and the big children did a great job at looking after us.

The Reception team wishes you a restful break and we can’t wait to see you all again soon. Keep up the great work at home!

NEWS FROM YEAR 1 Well done to all of Year 1 for another fantastic week of work! In Maths, we have been busy revisiting our number bonds and we’ve also had a lot of fun using numicon and dienes to help us understand doubling. Our report writing has got even better this week and we’ve confidently been able to write our own reports! Make sure you pop in during book look to see them; you might even learn something new about elephants! We’ve had a very busy few weeks in Year 1 so we are all looking forward to the holidays. Have a great break!.

NEWS FROM YEAR 2 Year 2 have loved their opportunity to experiment with colour in their Art lessons. They have been mixing primary colours together to create an array of secondary colours. To further challenge themselves they then created tertiary colours by combining these secondary colours together. They

used their knowledge of adjectives to describe these colours well.

Linking our History topic to DT children looked at different types and styles of houses from the past and recreated a house in the style of a Tudor house.

They recognised the materials that were used to make these buildings and could explain why the white on the building contrasted well to the black beams. They also recognised the trick that many Tudor houses had of creating an overhang so the

cost of ground rent was cheaper!

NEWS FROM YEAR 3 We have been learning about instructions in English this week. Through a variety of activities, such as games, pretending to be Sat Navs and cooking, we now understand the importance in giving clear but detailed instructions. You need to use bossy verbs and time openers when giving or writing instructions, so as a result we have all become expert bossy Year 3-ers!

17

TERM 17/18 ISSUE 6 17 OCTOBER 2017

NEWS FROM YEAR 4 The pupils in Year 4 continue to have great fun learning how to code.  They have been practicing their debugging and programming skills by piecing together instructions in a specific order. Through the use of programming, they will develop an understanding of how a computer navigates instructions and order.

In History, we have been comparing life in Ancient Greece and modern England. Tawny Owls were particularly mystified by how children managed to entertain themselves without access to the electrical appliances we are lucky enough to have today! As part of our Ancient Greek topic, the children have also been learning how to use the Ancient Greek alphabet and have enjoyed writing secret codes for each other to solve!

As Diwali approaches, we have been learning more about the celebration and why it is so important to Hindus.

YEAR 5 NEWS Over the past two weeks, the Year 5 children have been transported back in time when they visited the ‘Spaniard’s Inn’ and learned about the Highwayman. The story tells of the highwayman's visit to see the beautiful Bess at the old inn and of the terrible fate they both meet.

This classic poem has allowed the children to enjoy a great story with powerful imagery. Year 5 have investigated how the use of metaphors, alliteration and similes can effectively paint a picture in the reader’s head.

The children have been truly inspired and we look forward to seeing Year 5 use these writing features in their own written compositions this year.

NEWS FROM YEAR 6 This week year six were lucky to take part in a science trip to Stowe School. After a two hour minibus journey we entered the beautifully landscaped grounds and headed for the new science building. We were greeted by the Head of Science, Mr Tearle, who gave us some exciting demonstrations in the lecture theatre. We got to see hydrogen reacting with oxygen to make water (and a loud bang!) After the demonstrations we took part in two challenges in the lab which involved creating a fizzing rainbow and a colour change challenge. Our winners were Kinoli and Grace who managed to get the solution to change colour closest to one minute after it was first mixed! As if the science itself wasn’t enough, we even got to have a delicious lunch in the beautiful mansion and a wander through the world-famous gardens after which are part of a National Trust site. Thank you to Mrs Braithwaite and Stowe School for organising such a fantastic day out!

Charity News Chepstow House held a special ‘Ethiopia’ assembly this week taken by Miss Whitbread, Miss Wilkes and Miss Walshe. The children learned about how our school team spent their time when getting to know and interacting with pupils in our internationally linked school in Dembi Dollo. The Chepstow children were able to get a real insight to how different their lives are compared with those studying at the Abdi Academy. They were also informed about how child sponsorship is saving and changing the lives of the kids who live there.

A number of our staff (including the ‘Ethiopia’ teaching team) and parents have decided to sponsor a child in Dembi Dollo. This is something we would encourage all families to consider.

Thank you to Axl Funk for undertaking additional School Council duties when he promoted child sponsorship on Friday morning.

For further information please see our website or go to www.standby.me/chepstow

Thank you for your continued support.
