Collating the information requiredto launch an electronic productcatalogue can be a daunting task, particularly for a merchant likeJewson offering such a huge rangeof products.

The challenge is that manufacturers andsuppliers use different formats/standards tocreate, store and present their productinformation. However, merchants need tobe able to retrieve the full scope ofinformation about its building materialssuppliers from a single source and withminimal effort.

Jewson wanted a solution where all datareceived could be restructured into amanaged database and published in astandard format regardless of theconfiguration received in. It found thissolution in e-Xact Online and has beenusing successfully since 1992.

Jewson, part of the Saint-Gobain brand, is a namesynonymous withconstruction in the UK.Jewson sits within thesame Saint-Gobaintrading group asGibbs and Dandy,Minster and Grahamand is responsiblefor managing thedata for all fourbrands.

Richard Broadley, Product File Manager atJewson said, “e-Xact allows us to access allthe product data on our suppliers in astandard format, mirroring the data on ourown system.”

Jewson’s subscription with e-Xact hasdeveloped to become an all-encompassingservice, providing detailed productinformation from over 50% of its materialsuppliers. Richard comments, “We areseeing constant improvement in the qualityand richness of the data.”

e-Xact enables Jewson to update its masterdata system quickly with product changes.Content feeds for back office systems enablechanges to appear automatically on thebranch ERP and sales systems. Jewsontherefore benefits from a reduction in timetaken to maintain product data from its

suppliers because data only needs to beentered once in e-Xact for use byall. The back office team savestime and effort monitoring andchasing suppliers as updatesare received automatically.

ACO Technologies has been awarded‘The Carbon Trust Certification’, a markof excellence in recognition ofmeasuring, managing and reducingcarbon emissions on a company-widescale.

ACO’s achievement has also shown that thecompany has complied with theforthcoming need to meet the EU’s EnergyEfficiency Directive (2012/27/EU) well inadvance of having to do so. To achieve thecertification, ACO measured its carbonfootprint over a three-year period andthrough implementing a series ofmeasures was able to demonstrate anabsolute reduction in carbon emissions.

The savings were made through a range ofinitiatives. This included the use of ‘Vienite’;a polymer resin and gravel compositematerial made with a minimum of 20%recycled content with the added benefit ofan end of life recyclability as a road sub-base. This ground breaking new material isnow being used in the manufacture of allACO polymer concrete based products.

The importance of clean, smart, effective WCfacilities in schools and colleges and the rolethey play in discipline and behaviourmanagement is well-documented and this wascertainly an important consideration in thedesign of the new Wheelers Lane TechnologyCollege in south Birmingham. Over fiftyMultikwik Sanitary System concealed bathroomframes were used to create spacious, modern, and easy-to-clean WC facilities at the college.

Partnerships for Schools chief executive TimByles recognises the importance of clean, bright and modern toilet facilities in schools."There is a very real issue around bullying inschools, with toilet blocks recognised as a hotspot for bullies to target those they choose tointimidate and threaten," he says.

The British Cleaning Council believes thatchildren are unwilling to use unhygienic, badlyequipped toilets. "Children are just as entitledas adults to clean toilet facilities," saidChairman Steve Wright.

At Wheelers Lane, Multikwik Sanitary Systems

frames were used to hang WCs, sinks andurinals in three separate WC facilitiesthroughout the college. Because thesanitaryware is wall-hung, it is easy and quickto clean round and underneath, keeping WCfacilities looking clean and new for longer.

The Multikwik Sanitary System of concealedbathroom frames are particularly suited tothese large-scale projects because they havebeen designed specifically to be simple toinstall and easy to manage on site.

Sentinel’s new technology heating systemfilter “Eliminator” has been very wellreceived by installers all across the UKincluding several ‘Hot Spots’ - one of thoseHot Spots being the North East.

Bill Rothwell formed Rothwell PlumbingServices Limited (RPS) in June 1997. Since thistime, RPS has enjoyed considerable success inits expansion encompassing, domesticplumbing and heating, gas servicing, domestic, commercial and industrial electricalinstallations.

RPS has utilised Sentinel products since itsinception. Chris Jones, regional manager forRPS based in its North East office says: “Manyof us were brought up through the heating andplumbing sector relying on Sentinel products. When the new ‘Eliminator’ was launched, justknowing it was a Sentinel product gave usenough confidence to give it a sensible trialrun, and very quickly we were getting feedbackfrom the guys in our team that this was doingthe business for us. Our rate of call backs wasdrastically reduced and so were reports ofleaking filters.”

Installers love the Eliminator because it can beinstalled in any orientation. No specialist toolsor complex O-Rings are required, making it a

lot simpler and quicker to install. End usercustomers love the Eliminator too, as dualseals minimise the risk of leaks.

Britain’s leading independent brickmakerEdenhall has stepped up production of itsEngineering Quality concrete bricks as claybrick makers struggle to satisfy demand forClass B engineering bricks from merchants, housebuilders andgroundworkers inthe civils sector.

“We are finding agrowing market forthese strong densebricks with their lowwater absorption,” says EdenhallMD Andy Cotton. “It seems that production ofClass B engineering bricks has virtually ceasedas clay manufacturers switch to producinghigher value facing bricks. In sharp contrast,

our Engineering Quality bricks are readilyavailable across the country.”

Edenhall pioneered the development of theStandard Engineering Quality (EQ) concretebrick as a high performance and cost-effective

alternative to the Class B clayengineering brick. Thestandard EQ is ideal forthe ground workersand the civils sectorand is approved for useby the regulatory bodies

and standards such as BS EN 771-3:2011.

The bricks are suitable for use above andbelow ground and for foul and surface water

drainage. Typical applications include retainingwalls, chimney stacks, manholes and drainageinspection chambers.

These solid, dense bricks are marked byconsistent factory-made quality, outstandingdurability and a high strength, low absorptionand high dimensional accuracy. The strengthof the concrete solid engineering brick satisfiesthe requirement for long term durability andprovides an equivalent performance to its claycounterpart in this respect. www.edenhall.co.uk

SuperDeep 170, the high-strength, high-volume guttering system from Kayflow, hasbeen installed on a 75ft agriculturalbuilding in the depths of the Shropshirecountryside. Supplied in grey throughapproved stockist Venture BuildingPlastics, it replaces the shed’s originalcement-fibre rainwater system.

Retired maintenance engineer and small-holder Mr Tom Farmer needed a new systemwith a much greater capacity “It’s been upthere 20 years, since we built the shed. While

the material itself is ok and has stood the testof time, the capacity hasn’t; it’s no longeradequate,” he said. “We have been gettingmore flash storms with large quantities of rainfalling in short, sharp bursts and the currentguttering just can’t cope with it.”

Having researched modern guttering systemsMr Farmer was aware of those with a muchdeeper capacity but the SuperDeep 170 hasexceeded his expectations, “It is a much betterproduct. I have looked at a number of systemsand this one is by far the best.”

With a market leading flow rate of around 10litres per second, the SuperDeep 170 has thecapacity to carry over 10 times more waterthan a standard half round gutter and at leastfive times more water than a standard deepsystem.

Makita’s new EK6100 2-stroke disc cutter isalready proving the challenger against themarket’s established product, according to anindependent review now in the public domain. Disc cutters (also known as petrol engine cut-off saws) are hardworking machines used tocut concrete beams, building blocks, stone and

slabs. The working environment for thesemachines is usually on a busy construction sitewhere conditions are often dusty, hot andrugged. An efficient air intake filtration systemis vital for longevity, and for operators, lowweight and safe, low vibration ratings areessential.

“There has never been any real competitionuntil now,” says Kevin Brannigan, marketingmanager, Makita UK, in reference to the newMakita EK6100. “Feedback from the hireindustry says that the EK6100 represents avery credible alternative. It is lighter andeasier to use, and exceeds the specification ofthe competitor brand with vibration ratings andpower output that is second to none and themachine also offers a valuable extra 10mmdepth of cut.”

The Makita EK6100 disc cutter presently has afurther advantage of a free 3-year service coverpackage which has been extended to allmachines purchased for a limited period into2014.

“It all adds up to a win/win situation for thecustomer and the operator – a market leading, high performance product packed withrewards,” comments Mr Brannigan.
