I have had the opportunity to travel to faraway lands in my lifetime from London to Port-au-Prince, from Romania to South Africa. But I have discovered on my journeys that there is no land more beautiful than my native land of America. I have stood at the Grand Canyons South Rim and on the Grand View Terrace at Mt. Rushmore. I have taken a Chicago River architectural tour and driven down San Franciscos Lombard Street, the crookedest street in the world. I have walked the Freedom Trail to see Paul Reveres home in Boston and walked the streets to see Ernest Hemingways home in Key West. Yet there is nothing like the beauty of our own home state. From a sunrise over the dunes of Kitty Hawk to a sunset over the Blue Ridge Mountains, the natural beauty of North Carolina is unrivaled. When Katherine Lee Bates, a 33 year-old English teacher from Wellesley College, took a trip west to go up Pikes Peak in Colorado in 1893, she was inspired. She said that when she looked out over the sea-like expanse of fertile country spreading away so far under those ample skies, the opening line of a poem floated into my mind. Those lines became America the Beautiful, a national hymn that not only speaks of our natural beauty but of our limitless potential. It hails the pioneering forebears who beat a thoroughfare of freedomacross the wildernessand pays tribute to the nations defenders in war, the brave heroeswho more than self their country loved. It looks forward to the day when Americas alabaster citiesfinally will gleam undimmed by human tears. Here is my confession. I have always had a hard time getting through singing this song. I tear up every time. I have to swallow hard just to get through. No wonder. Voices quavered as crowds sang it outside the White House in 1941 after Pearl Harbor. Six decades later, voices quavered singing at Ground Zero after 9/11. Today my own voice quavers just writing this column. I think about all that is taking place across our land. I swallow hard as I recite its fervent prayer: America, America, God shed his grace on thee!I hope you will join us for worship this Sunday as we celebrate the freedom we have in Christ and the freedom we have in America. There are some musical blessings in store for you as we gather virtually to celebrate our countrys birthday. Happy July 4 Weekend, Pray for Dottie Brezeale, as she recovers from shoulder surgery on Tuesday. Pray for Peggy Stevens, who will be having spinal ablation procedures on July 6th and July 24th. Pray for several members of our church who are recovering from the coronavirus this week. Pray for our police, fire fighters and first responders during this time of unrest. Pray for our 170,000 American Troops stationed overseas this week in over 150 different countries on peacekeeping missions. The Senior Pastors Pen VBS Packet Pickup Knights, it’s time to make final plans for Virtual Bible School! Regis- tered families will need to swing by the church to pick up packets with materials you will need at home. The time to get those packets is Wednesday evening, July 8 from 5:00-6:30 p.m. outside of the church fellowship hall. You will drive through and someone will hand those packets to you in your car. In addition to your packets, there are ways to prepare at home now! Start planning your outfits for Spirit Knights. In case you missed what they are, below is a reminder of the themes for each night. Also, be sure you have “liked” FBCC Children on Facebook to stay up-to- date with important VBS information. Additionally, our VBS t-shirts are white this year. Your shirt will look awesome as is, but to make it all your own, consider tie dying those shirts. I plan to do that with mine, and this would make another fun activity for you to do at home. Spirit Knights Sunday: Ig-knight for Truth – Armor up with Truth! Dress in fiery flame colors as we take a look at Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and how they stand true in the fiery furnace. Monday: Mismatch Monday – Armor up with Justice! Dress in mis- matched clothes as we learn how God stands with David in a mismatched battle with Goliath. Tuesday: Christmas in July – Armor up with Peace! Dress in Christmas attire as we learn about Mary’s journey to Bethlehem and welcome the Prince of Peace. Wednesday: Water Wednesday – Armor up with Faith! Dress in your water wear (beach, pool, blues, etc.) as we learn about faith in Jesus as he walks on water. Thursday: Throwback Thursday – Armor up with Salvation! Dress in your medieval best as we learn about Paul and Silas’ jailbreak. Thanks! Ms. Stephanie To my Church Family, Thank you for the beautiful cards, calls and prayers in memory of my sister, Margaret Wall. I appreciate all of you and am blessed to be a part of First Baptist. What does the Bible say about Sunday School?

Acts 2:42-47 ESV

And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their posses-sions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts

Worship Regathering Update

The Church Council wishes to thank everyone who participated in the Regathering Survey re-ceived June 16-24. We had an excellent re-sponse: 176 FBCC households completed the survey. Here are the results:

59 households (33.5%) responded that they will return to in-person worship at the first opportuni-ty they have.

66 households (37.5%) responded that they will probably wait a few more weeks.

10 households (5.7%) indicated that they plan to return when school starts.

41 households (23.3%) indicated that it may be quite a while before they return.

Numerous comments were made complimenting church staff and media team for the good job they are doing providing access to meaningful music, messages, and worship experiences via Vimeo Video. Respondents indicated that they wanted this virtual access to worship services to continue even after we resume in-person wor-ship.

After reviewing the completed surveys and the rising coronavirus trends for our area on June 28, the Church Council set a new target date to regather for in-person worship on Aug. 16. Cur-rently, the Council plans to provide one 11 AM service beginning Aug. 16 until a second service is needed at a later date. With an eye towards the health and safety of our congregation, the Church Council will continue to monitor the situ-ation and keep you informed.
