As we begin the school year 2021-2022 open for full face to face instruction and learning, I want to welcome all of you back and I thank you for your patience and support as we continue to fine tune our school’s policies and procedures to ensure everyones’ safety. I apologize for any inconvenience these changes may cause, but please remember the changes are to ensure we are able to provide a safe learning environment for everyone. One thing this pandemic has taught us is things can change quickly and we must always be prepared to adapt. Please be sure you update our school office whenever your phone number, address, or email changes. That will ensure we can always contact you should a need arise. Information will also be shared on our school website so please check there for updates. Our school mission “to challenge and empower our students to achieve a lifetime of success” is still our school’s focus even in these uncertain times. Daily attendance plays a large role in the success a student has in school. Please make every effort to have your child(ren) in school daily, unless they are sick. All families must complete a daily wellness check at home before bringing your child(ren) to school. If your child(ren) have a fever, chills, cough, difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, they must stay home and follow the Return to School Criteria before returning to school. We are all here to support your child(ren) academically, emotionally, physically, and socially. If you have not already done so, please get vaccinated and vaccinate your child(ren) that are 12 years or older. Aloha Kea‘au Middle School

Families,

I hope the beginning of our school year finds you

and your loved ones healthy and safe during these

trying times. As we begin the school year

2021-2022 open for full face to face instruction and

learning, I want to welcome all of you back and I

thank you for your patience and support as we

KMS Hygiene Pantry

"Ms. McCracken will becollecting donations forour KMS Hygiene Pantryprogram. The HygienePantry is a programthrough which studentsand families experiencing financial hardship canreceive hygiene product packages for free. Thepantry is available to students upon request andMs. McCracken will be doing quarterly distributionsfor families (more information will come soonregarding the first quarter distribution). If youwould like to support this program, we wouldgreatly appreciate shampoo, conditioner,toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, femininehygiene products, and baby care products.Students can bring donations to room P-12 orfamilies can get in touch with Ms. McCracken at(808)313-4873. Education First European Tour

Social Studies Teacher Tiffany Hunt will lead a group ofstudents on a trip to Europe in June of 2022.

The 10-day trip arranged by EF Tours will include stopsin England, France, and Italy. HONORING PEOPLE AT KMS

Growing Our Greenwave ʻOhana

We extend a warm family welcome to the newestmembers of our KMS Faculty!

Ms. Liza Harveyteaches all subjects tostudents in grades 6th to 8thand she enjoys arts andcrafts. The sweet treat shereaches for is a rainbowstraw, and she doesn’t have afavorite sports team becauseshe takes pleasure inwatching all sports. Ms.Harvey loves teachingbecause she loves to seestudents grow and progress

and become proud of themselves as we all learnand grow together! As Tennessee is her homeland,Ms. Harvey is so grateful for this experience and soexcited to be a part of Keaʻau Middle School!

Mr. Cash Helmanteaches 6th grade musicappreciation and he findsdelight in songwriting andcycling. Mint Cookies ‘n’Cream is his favorite icecream flavor, and his sportsteam is Sevilla FC (soccer).Mr. Helman is one of our ownKeaʻau Middle School alumniand loves teaching becausestudents are awesome and

funny. He returns to KMS after having traveled to agreat extent before the pandemic. “I’ve run with thebulls in Spain, gone fishing with Samoan chiefs,and eaten squid ink- flavored ice cream in Japan.”

Mr. Gregg Yonemorijoins us as our newKeaʻau Middle SchoolPrincipal with teachingexperience in middleschool science, K-12special education, andK-12 school counseling.Mr. Yonemori findspleasure in Judo andworking on old cars. Hispreferred ice cream flavor

is vanilla and his favorite sports team is the YomiuriGiants, a pro baseball team in Japan, whom hefavors only because their logo is their initials. Heloves working with students and “talking story” withthem because he loves helping them achieve theirgoals, knowing that together we are capable ofbuilding a better future for everyone.

Ms. Brittney Imade-Meguro

is our new Grade 6Counselor.Her sports of choice arevolleyball and track, butshe actually likes justabout anything to do withbeing outside (e.g.,camping, beach, fishing).One other preferredpastime for our newcounselor is travelingand she can’t wait toreturn to her favorite

destination, Japan. Mrs. Imade-Meguro shared herthoughts about her new career assignment here atKMS, “I love counseling because my passion is tohelp students grow and reach their full potential.”

Mr. Christopher Dewhirstteaches 7th grade math, and his favorite pastime issurfing. His ice cream flavor of choice is Pistachio,and his sports team is the New England Patriots.Mr. Dewhirst loves teaching because it allows youto make positive change for the future.

NURSE’S CORNERIMPORTANTUpdated PhysicalRequirements

State law requires allstudents to receive aphysical exam andimmunizations before starting seventh grade.

Since July of 2020 there are new health Department ofHealth requirements to enter 7th grade. These includethe physical exam and vaccinations of HPV, MCV, andTDAP.

For current 6th grade students, these newrequirements must be met to enter the next school yearof 2021-2022.

For current 7th grade students, missing these newrequirements may delay entry to 8th grade or result inexclusion from school in the future.

Lost PropertyIf money or other property is lost onschool premises, parents need to takeprompt action to recover lost items. Ifclothing items are not claimed by the endof each semester, items will be turnedover to the health room or donated to Goodwill or other non-profitcharities. Items of value like phones and electronics will be heldin a secure location. If not claimed by the end of the year, itemswill be appropriately disposed of or donated to a non-profitcharity. Money found will be kept in a secure location. Claimsshould be addressed with security or administration.
