Typical questions we get about joining the Club

The many emails/calls we receive enquiring about what isinvolved in joining the club. Some usual questions are:

- Can we teach? No. we can't, we are not allowed to.But we share a great lot of experience with fellow members.- Are there lady members? Sure are – we have plenty.Age, gender, occupations and team preferences are of noissue with 'Woodies'. We're just crazy about wood!Last count we had 25 fine lady members out of the overall200 at the club. We've seen a 50% increase in recent yearsof lady members, when overall growth was 25%.- What age groups come? Well, our Secretary hasworked out some nice statistics on that. 29% are aged 45-65, 43% are 65-85. We have some younger, and older! Sothere's a wealth of enthusiasm, and experience here!- How do I find out about what the club is like? Drop inon a meeting night (1st WED of the month 7:15PM) or whenthe club is open, We love showing visitors how to becomemembers! Refer NEWSLETTER last page for open times.- How much does it cost Latest Joining fee/membership fees are on website.Presently (2016-17) $75 pa (due 1st Sept), and a one time$50 joining fee. Late fees apply after 31st Oct, and failing torenew by 30th Nov requires another Joining Fee. - When do we meet? Refer to the last page of latest newsletters to see the timesthe club is open for all the activity groups. But membersare also welcome to use the workshops whenever there aretwo or more keyholders/competent machine user attendees(for safety reasons), to undertake their own projects, butcourtesy suggests that priority is given the activity groupson 'their sessions', to allow them to progress Club works.

VALE – Louis Edward Hirst Smith - 18/1/2017After meeting Joe Semenow (life member and doyen ofrocking horse making) in 2005, Lou was demonstrating his

woodworking skills and showed agreat interest in Joe's pastime.

It wasn't long before a mutualagreement was reached with Joe,for Lou to try his hand at thisancient craft in Joe's garage.Under Joe's watchful eye, Lousuccessfully managed to make his1st rocking horse, and his passionand interest in rocking horses wasborn.

Lou quickly joined the Club in November, and was a greatsupporter, to the then rocking horse co-ordinator, TonyTruett, and relished the opportunity to have a go at makinganother Number 4 and for good measure of smaller Garethrocking horse at the same time. It wasn't long before Loucompleted both horses, and to Tony's amazement, he couldnot understand how Lou had completed the task in such ashort time. The story eventually came out, that Lou hadbeen working furiously in his own Workshop between visitsto the Club, where the Rocking Horse Group at that time, only operated on a Friday night.

Lou's passion for making more horses was unstoppable. Itwasn't long before he had made ones for his grandchildrenand friends, along with Club horses for the raffle at the Knoxand Stringybark Festivals. Unfortunately, Tony had torelinquish his role as co-ordinator for family reasons, andLou took over as Horse Co-Ordinator in 2007. With Lou'spassion for rocking horses it wasn't long before Fridaynights became too crowded and Lou generously offered toshare his knowledge to members on other week days andnights when it suited the individual. This was other thanwhen he generously gave up one day a week deliveringmeals on wheels.

Lou's method of instructing members was unique, in that hewould firstly demonstrate how to carve one leg or one sideof the horse's face or body, and then let the member have ago themsleves. Naturally, most members were initiallyreluctant to make those chips fly, but, it wasn't too longbefore Lou would instil loads more confidence in them, withhis oft repeated saying: “Don't worry about makingmistakes – they can all be fixed easily – after all, it isonly wood”.

In addition to his woodworking skills, Lou also took greatpleasure in helping members finish the final carving/sandingby simply saying: “if you are happy with its shape, soam I, and don't forget – there are no two horses thesame. So, when you are happy, I will show and helpyou stain and dress it with the colours you want”.

Perhaps Lou could best be described as a passionatefanatic in all aspects of horse making, to the point that heeventually sourced raw materials to make the bridles, tanned his own manes and tails, and had the best dealsgoing for timber and saddles, along with all the otherparaphernalia that is required.

Without Lou's generosity in sharing his time and knowledge, many members and indeed his many friends, includingsome of his treating medical staff, would not be the proudowners of a unique family heirloom. …. Hughie Gaynor.

Footnote:

Members attending Lou's funeral, would have heard abeautiful eulogy from his son, Guy Smith, enunciating thevery points raised by Hughie above.

Lou had a long and successful sideline of coaching squashat a very advanced level. Needless to say, his coachingskills were indeed present in the way he undertook hishelping building horses.

Born 26/4/36, he remained a hard working, well respected, and devoted family man to his children and grandchildrenand his late and beloved wife, Arlene. The club extendsits condolences to Lou's extended family. RIP Louis.

Not wanting to interrupt Peter with his workabove, but he took time out to share his system softwareskills on a problem that has been plaguing the Club'soperating system (on the PC), and he was only too pleasedto share some insight to how to address that – Many, manythanks to your Peter!!

And now for something complimentary: PHOTOGRAPHY of woodwork

by Phil Spencer

When I am not turning wood into useful things, one of myfavourite things to do is to take pictures. Writing about thethings that I make allows me to merge my two hobbies(taking pictures of my work for publication).

With this in mind I thought that I would talk about how I goabout taking my pictures and perhaps impart some of mylimited knowledge in photographing your work.

I use the following equipment:

Camera (I use DSLR's so I will reference back to these)

Tripod A remote shutter release - I purchased mine on

EBay it is similar to this one: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Pixel-TW-282-Wireless-Timer-Remote-Control-For-Nikon-with-DC2-Cable-/131827718799?hash=item1eb18b5a8f:g:dDAAAOSwY0lXRmiL

A light tent (details on making an inexpensive light tent can be found here: http://digital-photography-school.com/how-to-make-a-inexpensive-light-tent/

A speed light A second flash (mine is an older unit that can be

triggered by a flash of light)

Using the light tent

Figure 1 this is my light tent set up, I purchased a commerciallymade one from Office Works

Figure 2 Another view of the light tent

Figure 3 For small objects the result is pleasing and professional.

Figure 4 Myrtle bowl, picture taken in the light tent.

Page 7: KDWC FEB 2017 Page 1 INGRAINEDnewsletters.knoxwoodies.org.au/20170201.pdf · 2017-01-28 · KDWC FEB 2017 Page 3 VALE – Louis Edward Hirst Smith - 18/1/2017 After meeting Joe Semenow

KDWC FEB 2017 Page 7

The light tent uses two lights side mounted to light up theobject being photographed and, eliminates nearly allshadows giving a good impression of the object beingphotographed. I use the remote control to eliminate anypossibility of camera shake as usually the shutter speedsare low.

Photographing larger items A lot of the time, the things that I need to photograph are large, and I need to consider other issues like:

Location lighting (do I use ambient lighting or do I need to

supplement it with a flash.) How do I show the item off to its best?

Figure 5 Picture taken using ambient light

The picture on the cover of the January issue of theAustralian Woodworker showing my Windsor chair, wastaken using ambient light, I set the scene on my patio, I setup a side table with a bottle of my favourite beverage. I hadgood light and no need to use a flash and the setting tried tocover a whimsical feel, (sitting back in the sun enjoying atipple) can't think of a better way to pass some time!

Taking the picture of the plane on my bench, I had toconsider other issues. Once again I used a tripod to mountmy camera and also used a remote shutter release. I set uptwo lights, one: my speed light set to fire remotely and thesecond: was an old flash unit that fired using its light sensor.

Figure 6 Setup using two flash units

Figure 7 My No 1

Figure 8 Sometimes there can be too much light!!!!

So photographing your work can be rewarding, it is a goodway to show off what you make and, is a natural extensionof your hobby. BUT you don't need a lot of fancy equipmentto take good pictures of your work. An iphone could workjust as well.

I am sure that there are several photographers in the clubwith more knowledge than me who, will be happy to sharetheir knowledge. ….. Phil

Editor's footnote.

When Phil brought this idea up last week, I came close toreally suggesting complicated with AV and live feeds andlinking via Chromecast, and using WiFi to link moviecameras from the lathe room to the clubroom..… Sure gladI just left Phil to do what he is really good at: Sharing somegreat ideas in simple language, and showing some practicalexamples of how things can be put into action.

Now the challenge is down, for like-minded cameraenthusiasts who love woodworking. Yes, Dick, Lindsay, Billand many others I've seen with serious cameras taking fineshots…. Please add to this commentary, and feed backother useful suggestions of how you've used cameratechnology to relay the story of fine woodworking projects.I am sure Phil will really welcome lots of interaction on thistopic. Onya Phil, for throwing this into the news todiscuss and share! …….. [Gaz]

Christine (02) 9792 1082 tells of the fire that impacted theoriginal company, along with other market research thatchanged the company's thinking about which supply lines tofocus on. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2003-12-22/fire-guts-byron-oil-factory/109196

Whilst the Hi-Speed Finishing Oil is no longer being made, instead, the HARD BURNISHING OIL is the moreappropriate for WOOD BENCHTOPS and FOODSERVING ITEMS. Slightly more TUNG oil than thetung/mustard seed formulation of the former Hi-SpeedFinishing oil product of past years.

AVAILABLE FROM: Carba-Tec Prices from website as at 10th Jan 2017: (inc GST, plus delivery)https://www.carbatec.com.au/sanding-and-finishing/burnishing/org-hard-burnishing-oil-1ltr$31 500ml Product Code:ORG-HB-500ML$44 for 1lt Product Code:ORG-HB-1LTR $79 for 2lt Product Code:ORG-HB-2LTR

Three products are listed on the website:http://www.organoil.com.au/woodcraft/index.html

Hi-Speed Finishing Oil (the same can we have from 20 yearsago. We queried whether the formulation has changed to more'mustard seed' versus tung oil content- this was more for decorative woodturning only *NO LONGER IN PRODUCTION – see below alternative*

Hard Burnishing oilBased on genuine TUNG OIL, excellent sealing, using 'burnishing'technique on lathe or wet sanding procedure.- great for benchtops, tabletops and food serving items

Danish Oil decorative use and childrens toys. NOT recommended forwashable, table top benchtop use where HARD BURNISHING OILwould be a better proposition

Pure Tung Oilhttp://www.organoil.com.au/tungoil/index.html

This seems more suited to NON-wood products, like stone, slate, concrete, terracotta (BUT not exterior in exposed situations)

Here's what it does,as seen on 1200 gritfinish of Gary's wallmounted bedhead,2900mm x 70mm a700mm ironbark.

HUMOR - The pleasures of CHOCOLATE CAKE

This ain't funny – it's serious! If you love chocolate cake that is!

Phil Spencer has made an excellent suggestion, that we considersharing the secret recipes of the food we like to eat, whilstpondering the secrets of our woodworking pursuits.

To kick this off, he shares his Grandmother's chocolate cakerecipe.

Here's to Nanny Spratling's Chocolate Cake……. ENJOY

105 grams butter (4.5 Tablespoons)3 Tablespoons cocoa. (For a darker richer cake add an extra Table spoon of Coca)1.5 cups SR flour1.5 cups sugar3/4 cup milk3 eggs1 teaspoon vanilla essence

For something different, add 3 teaspoons of ground licorice root, this will create an exotic taste leaving a faint after taste of licorice after the chocolate taste of the cake has been enjoyed.

Soften butter and place with the other ingredients into a mixing bowl.Mix well for 3 to 4 minutes.Pour into greased and lined cake tin.Bake at 160 degrees C for approximately 50 minutes

HUMOR

Phil has shared this rather hysterical youtube movie about “whencavement discovered sex”. It's cheeky, but quite clever.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pFwFR_Z_eQ
