President's Report - Rodney WilliamsWelcome back in 2019. Sad to hearabout the death of Len Elliott (Oct2017) who was one of the FoundationMembers of the Club.
He was a Rocking Horse enthusiast.He has left a collection of videos onmaking Rocking horses. We will needto protect his intellectual property – so no copying. If anymember is interested, we will make Len’s vision available tobe shared at the Club rooms.

Another valued member died – Lindsay Rotherham diedon January 18, 2019.
He lost his long battle withcancer and his funeral, onJanuary 25th was wellattended.
He seemed to lead a very busylife – loved a party. As aretired Vietnam Vet, workingwith Legacy and winning manyawards at woodturning – heshared his skills with manyclub members. He led a verybusy life.
On the break after Christmas, the thicknesser and theJointer have had their blades rotated. Please be diligent inchecking your material before using. The heavy-duty tablesaw has also been repaired.We are in the process of offering, for tender, a large amountof Trident saw bench and router table. Keep your eye out ifinterested.

Typical questions about joining the ClubThe many emails/calls we receive enquiring about what is involvedin joining the club. Some usual questions are:- Can we teach? No. we can't, we are not allowed to. But weshare a great lot of experience with fellow members.- Are there female members? Sure are – we have plenty. Age,gender, occupations and team preferences are of no issue with'Woodies'. We're just crazy about wood!2015 count we had 25 fine female members out of the overall 200at the club. We've seen a 50% increase in recent years of femalemembers, when overall growth was 25%. - What age groups come? Well, our Secretary has worked outsome nice statistics on that. 29% are aged 45-65, 43% are 65-85.We have some younger, and older! So there's a wealth ofenthusiasm, and experience here! - How do I find out about what the club is like? Drop in on ameeting night (1st WED of the month 7:15PM) or when the club isopen, We love showing visitors how to become members! ReferNEWSLETTER last page for open times, and links to activities.- How much does it cost Latest Joining fee/membership fees are on website. Presently(2018-19) $100 pa (due 1st Sept), with 50% discount after 1st
March if a new member, PLUS a one time $50 joining fee. Latefee of $10 applies after 31st Oct, and failing to renew by 30th Novrequires another Joining Fee of $50 to be paid.. - When do we meet? Refer to the last page of latest newsletters to see the times theclub is open for all the activity groups. VALE – LINDSAY ROTHERHAM 18/1/2019
Some may already bewell aware, as too thoseon the Club's Facebookpage, that we lost a finemember 18th January.
Lindsay Rotherhamhas been a member ofthe KDWC since28/6/2004, a long timeprovider of fine items inBe-In-It Competitions, and an all round helpful member thatwe will all miss.
We often listed Lindsay as a Be-In-Itfinalist and winner over the years, and agood example of his fine work can beseen in an article from April 2017 whichwe re-printed with agreement fromAWTEX.

Regretfully, Lindsay lost his fight with cancer, at the age of73+. To Lindsay's wife, Jennie and the many extendedfamily members and friends we relay our condolences.

“Don’t Rush and Don’t Force It“
“Don’t Rush - Keep in mind this is a probably just a hobby.Take a break when you feel rushed or frustrated. Mistakes are
more likely when you rush or take short cuts”.
Consider a situation where you are tempted to work for longer thanyou otherwise would, just to get finished by a deadline. I think thisis a fair description of rushing. After a time, your body muscles willbecome fatigued through trying to maintain the working positionyou have chosen. This point is reached sooner, if any part of yourbody is operating outside your stance, because you will bestruggling against an offset centre of gravity. In a condition ofmuscle fatigue, you will lose some sense of feeling in yourmovements and your mind will become distracted by thediscomfort. You should immediately stop for a break, do somestretching exercises and consider how you allowed yourself tobecome so rushed.
I think you will all have seen pictures ofpeople (usually men!), perched on top of ahastily constructed stack of ladders, drums,pallets … well, just about anything close by. Iimagine these situations have come aboutbecause they were also rushing; not takingthe time to use the right equipment forworking at heights, such as a scissor-lift orproperly constructed scaffolding.
“Don’t Force It - If your blade is resisting the cut, stop and find the cause”.
This tip as not always related to tool maintenance, but canhappen by rushing your work to get finished. We all knowthat cutting edges have limitations on how easily they willpass through wood across their working lives. Thoselimitations will be reached as a cutting edge blunts, but canbe reached even sooner when forcing a workpiece past thecutting edge. The greater force applied by the operator, thegreater is the resistance generated. Perhaps Isaac Newtonwas describing kickback when he said “For every actionthere is an equal and opposite reaction”? Maybe not but stillthe message is clear. Please allow your machine to do itswork – but within its capabilities.

An interview with member: Andre Cook
This month we had a nice opportunity to meet up withMember: Andre Cook and his wife Nantje, to have acloser look at his magnificent woodworking projects,particularly models and clocks, that Andre has made inrecent years. Andre kindly shared an insight to how hisskills in woodworking came about, and gave us some clueson what's important when tackling such projects.
Although only a member since 2014, Andre has made ahuge impact on the Club, with his tireless work assisting theKids Korner Tuesday Group with Dick Webb, taking onthe role of Projects Manager recently, and being a keencontributor to the Be-In-It festivals evey year. He's aregular attendee to all Club functions, festivals and KidzKorner activities with the Community, and his involvement iswell respected and appreciated. But where did Andre'spassion for woodworking stem from? A little history helps.
Andre commenced as a builder's apprentice at the youngage of 15, which saw him take on carpentry whilst still atschool learning to be a 'Brickologist” as he calls himself. Soit formed a terrific grounding in working hard, and gettingused to all manner of construction challenges. Over theyears he fell into a niche role in the industry as a 'ProgramManager' – a person who has to implement, manage, re-schedule and supervise major projects, and many of theseinvolved major construction projects, one being thefabrication of a major blast furnace at an AluminiumSmelting Plant. So his bricklaying skills were useful too!

From this background, it is easy to understand now, whyAndre has such a practical, team spirited manner abouthimself, and is one to quickly get a job underway andsorted out. I was impressed about the size and scope ofhis endeavours, compared to what we see him fulfil at theKDWC clubrooms, doing very fine model-making work.Quite an about face you'd think. But his woodworkingtalents came from a couple of unexpected beginnings.
A good mate of his, “Kees”, wanted to build a large trainsetunder his house, and Andre assisted. This was 14 yearsago, and lots of models were made, out of wood, and Andrethoroughly enjoyed the exercise. Years passed, and thepair got wind of the KDWC and popped in to check us out.Andre joined on the spot. But it was at that same point intime, in 2014, that his Son became involved in building up avery successful crane business in QLD, growing quickly,and takling major projects in many States. The huge craneshe acquired for projects, and the many photos shared withfamily, prompted Andre to building model replicas – andwhat amazing replicas they are!

Andre was awarded a “HighlyCommended” certificate inAug 2017 for that enormouscrane with its elaborate'boom'.
In 2018, Andre's intricatewooden clock won “Best InShow” as a Large piece. (seethe start of this article)
Back in 2016, Andre won“Best in Show” for a minorpiece, with the semi-trailershown below.

Another crane, which boasts an expanding boom, is aninteresting piece.
“The secret to cutting the pieces accurately, for the boom,was to use the previously cut size of the smaller pieces, addthe thicknesses of the next pieces (on edge) and cut thenext size up, using that as a template….. and so forth.That way, you know that the progressively sized pieces willfit within each other.” says Andre.
But Andre is a careful planner. He never builds anythingwithout a plan first, often starting with a computer CADdrawing. And from those drawings, he seeks out optimalways to build the pieces using jigs or templates, to makework easier for any reptetitive items. Andre has a shed fullof templates! Every tool has some handmade jig to allowhim to knock up all manner of shapes needed on his tablesaw or jig saw.

What skills do you see as important to have?
- Patience! Don't rush!- Keep your eye on where the BLADE hits the LINE- Never be frightened to ask questions- Have a basic underlying set of carpentry skills- Practice! Get involved in making repetitive pieces. (Join a group like Kidz Korner to do this!)
What special equipment do you rely upon?
In a visit to Andre's “POPS SHED” in the yard, we find a well laid out workshop with a few key machines: - a very accurate, large TABLE SAW- a simple BAND SAW but with all manner of templates- simple drill press and sander mounted on bench- a hand made dust extraction system throughout- everything on WHEELS to move about the shed- a solid workbench with shadowboard of hand tools.
Nothing expensive or elaborate, but just plain ACCURATE,SOLID tools that work! Like this TABLE SAW attachment:

Did your involvement with KDWC, and its fellow members, help with your pursuit?
Andre found that doing repetitive construction exercises inKidz Korner really helped with identifying smarter ways tomake templates, jigs and such techniques lead to a moreaccurate and successful outcome. You always learn newideas when working with other like-minded Club Members.
What advice would you give to newcomers, tackling such projects?
- Make sure EVERYTHING IS SQUARE- Measure it, mark the LINE, leave HALF THE LINE on!- Improvise with JIGS and TEMPLATES- Join a group to rehearse / improve your skills
What was your favourite achievement?
“That would be the Clock! I had a feeling it would work , but when it finally did, I was chuffed!” says Andre.

Should I Really Join Facebook?
When I bought my Blackberry, I thought about the 30-yearbusiness I ran with 1800 employees, all without a cell phone thatplays music, takes videos, pictures and communicates withFacebook and Twitter. I signed up under duress for Twitter andFacebook, so my seven kids, their spouses, my 13 grand kids and2 great grand kids could communicate with me in the modern way.I figured I could handle something as simple as Twitter with only140 characters of space.
My phone was beeping every three minutes with the details ofeverything except the bowel movements of the entire nextgeneration. I am not ready to live like this. I keep my cell phone inthe garage in my golf bag.
The kids bought me a GPS for my last birthday because they say Iget lost every now and then going over to the grocery store orlibrary. I keep that in a box under my tool bench with the Blue tooth[it's red] phone I am supposed to use when I drive. I wore it onceand was standing in line at Barnes and Noble talking to my wifeand everyone in the nearest 50 yards was glaring at me. I had totake my hearing aid out to use it, and I got a little loud.
I mean the GPS looked pretty smart on my dash board, but thelady inside that gadget was the most annoying, rudest person Ihad run into in a long time. Every 10 minutes, she wouldsarcastically say, "Re-calc-u-lating." You would think that she couldbe nicer. It was like she could barely tolerate me. She would let gowith a deep sigh and then tell me to make a U-turn at the nextlight. Then if I made a right turn instead. Well, it was not a goodrelationship..
When I get really lost now, I call my wife and tell her the name ofthe cross streets and while she is starting to develop the sametone as Gypsy, the GPS lady, at least she loves me.
To be perfectly frank, I am still trying to learn how to use thecordless phones in our house. We have had them for 4 years, but Istill haven't figured out how I lose three phones all at once andhave to run around digging under chair cushions, checkingbathrooms, and the dirty laundry baskets when the phone rings.
The world is just getting too complex for me. They even mess meup every time I go to the grocery store. You would think they couldsettle on something themselves but this sudden "Paper orPlastic?" every time I check out just knocks me for a loop. I boughtsome of those cloth reusable bags to avoid looking confused, but Inever remember to take them with me.
Now I toss it back to them. When they ask me, "Paper or plastic?"I just say, "Doesn't matter to me. I am bi-sacksual." Then it's theirturn to stare at me with a blank look. I was recently asked if Itweet. I answered, No, but I do fart a lot."
P.S. I know some of you are not over 70. I share this to you toallow you to share it to those who are....... I figured your sense ofhumour could handle it. If not... find a sense of humour....
We all need to have one of these !!!. We senior citizens don'tneed any more gadgets. The TV remote and the garage doorremote are about all we can handle.
