An Introduction - KBS-CMR

Nestled amidst the picturesquely beautiful Sahyadri hills; sandwiched between an expressway in the east and old Mumbai-Pune highway in the west, is the colosseum of business education: Kohinoor Global Campus, Khandala.

Kohinoor Business School and Centre for Management Research (KBS-CMR) offers a two year fully residential programme in Postgraduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) at its Global Campus, in Khandala. KBS-CMR offers state-of-the-art residential and instructional facilities for postgraduate students in various functional areas of management.

Kohinoor Business School embarked upon this journey in the year 2003, as a fully-residential business school, in collaboration with the Sprott School of Business, under the Carleton University, Canada, that offered an Undergraduate programme in International business.

It was in the year 2008 that KBS-CMR got the approval from AICTE to start an autonomous management programme: Postgraduate Diploma in Management (PGDM). The approval from AICTE to begin an autonomous programme was a natural consequence to our endeavours of collaboration that we have been pursuing to sinew our

vision of making this business school as one that is recognized globally.

Kohinoor Business School and Centre for Management Research (KBS-CMR) provides a platform that enables a vibrant exchange of intellectual ideas, equip the students with the technical knowledge and management expertise, required to work in any role across the globalised world. Our students benefit from the latest-in-management-practices and research-driven management theories and applications because we have carefully woven those management practices and research-driven-empirically-evident management theories into our teaching curriculum. Furthermore, our faculties use case-studies and articles drawn from noted business journals and research publications like, Harvard Business Review, The Economist Intelligence Unit, of Economist, a UK weekly publication and so forth.

A craftsmanship-approach to teaching and a hands-on approach to learning is the hallmark of Kohinoor Business School and Centre for Management Research.

Corporate organizations and research institutions today are looking for people who are forthright, dedicated, skilled and hardworking.

The Post Graduate Diploma in Management at the Kohinoor Business School & Center for Management & Research (KBS-CMR, Khandala) occupies an imperial position today by imparting quality business education, relevant to the realities of the corporate environment. Since the course is an amalgamation of managerial concepts and economic theories, interspersed with practical acquaintances the institute has been fostering a positive and growing interaction with the business houses, research institutes and planning bodies of both

national as well as international repute. Corporate-houses have always showed a keen interest in the activities of the institute and have been enthusiastic in recruiting the young business executives to be part of their managerial teams.

The young students of the current batch come from diverse backgrounds such as commerce, engineering, economics, management and sciences and were selected on the basis of a procedure including a rigorous test, interview, and group discussion, conducted on an all India basis. They have been trained and nurtured to think independently, to be value driven, to strive for excellence in every sphere and be upright in their role as decision makers. I take this opportunity to invite the corporate houses and research institutions alike to join hands with us towards building a better and stronger future for the nation.

Shri Unmesh Joshi (Chairman)

Dr. B.P. Verma (Director)Ph.D., M.B.E., M.B.A, M.Com

The rapid globalization of business calls for a different type of leader in the future. Kohinoor Business School & Center for Management Research (KBS-CMR) is one of the most innovative business schools with excellent teaching and research resources. At KBS-CMR our aim is to help students grow into the business leader they need to become: one who is creative and confident in a wide range of functions; one who can operate in cross-cultural environment, in any industry and one who knows how to achieve results. In short “we will make it our business, to transform a student's future.”

The metamorphosis that we proactively seek in a student that helps him/her craft their future is a well-thought-through process that begins with integrating learning and development of conceptual knowledge to real-life business scenario. It has been and will continue to be, our endeavour to collaborate with the corporate houses to understand the ever-changing business environment and imbibe it in our curricula. Consequently, sharpen the skill sets of our students so that they are capable of encountering challenges in their work and business.

The proximity of Kohinoor Business School & Centre for Management Research, to Mumbai, India's financial capital and Pune, considered the Detroit of India as also an upcoming hub for IT/ITES companies, gives us an extra-edge over others, who lose over one of these places to the other. As we see it, we have opportunities in plenitudes to be tapped from what both those cities offer to our students.

Khandala is a nature's basket in that it has all the essential elements of nature in it. Living in this calm and quiet locale not only makes living a peaceful experience it also adds excitement in the form of out-door activities like trekking, mountaineering, para-gliding. It is in a healthy body that a healthy mind dwells. Our campus is a perfect setting that activities for the mind are coupled with activities for the body. To maintain a conducive- environment for the overall development of an individual we have created a well organised campus that has freedom and responsibility in equal measure.

International Business :

Operations Management

Developments in the international marketing on one hand and the consequential impact of the same on India's domestic market on the other, call for a professional approach and sensitivity to international business environment. The PGDM (International Business) is a foundation course for developing a competent cadre of business executives to meet the country's growing requirements of training personnel in the field of international business management.

In addition to the above mentioned areas, the school is prepared to offer electives ins several other specialized areas such as Technology Management, Operations Management, Media and Marketing Communications, Entrepreneurship etc.

: Operations have become critical in the Indian business context. They are a natural consequence of expansion of businesses and its concomitant challenges: managing the operations of a business from a global perspective. The big companies are trying to act smaller (more focus upon their customers) and the smaller companies are trying to scale-up their operations big by collaborating with one another to service their customers. It is this collaboration that creates operational complexities. One needs to understand the basis of this complexity and then design, manage & operate such operations. It requires a special expertise to manage operations therefore it becomes imperative to understand it thoroughly.

KBS-CMR's Post Graduate Diploma in Management is

unique and not like other programmes offered in India in

terms of examination and assessment patterns. We are

firmly rooted in the practice of a continuous assessment

system. Thus in each three months trimester we have two

examinations, the mid-term and the end-term

examinations. The two-year curriculum has been divided

into six trimesters with case-study based teaching, weekly

quizzes, assessments, tutorials and projects to ensure that

the students are involved actively in academics throughout

the entire course duration. Overall the modes of

assessment for each course at KBS-CMR include a

combination of the following:

• Quizzes

• Individual assignments and Presentations

• Group assignments and Presentations

• Term Papers

• Class Participation

• Case Presentation

• Tutorials

• Simulation and Role-plays

• On-line Assessments

• Field work

• Seminars

• Mid-term Examinations

• End-term Examinations

The dates on which the tutorials, assignments and projects

have to be submitted are predetermined and any late

submission is penalized in terms of marks. This ensures

that students take their academic work seriously and

manage their time optimally.

Our students come from all corners of India. This creates a cross-culture and diverse background for the students to interact with each other and understand the diverse cultures of this nation. It not only promotes the feeling of respect towards other cultures but also imbibes in these students the aspect of co-existence – a crucial factor – for the well being of a healthy society, for it is a healthy society that promotes overall development; a society that respects each and every individual and all human beings that dwell within.

KBS-CMR creates this experience keeping in mind the greater goal of preparing our students to embrace 'globalization' – a wave of free mobility of resources – including human resources – in a seemingly borderless environment, making the entire globe appear like a village!

Students Profile (Batch 2009 - 2011)17

Just as diverse is their cultural background their educational background too has a similar diversity in that there is a mix of engineering, science, commerce and arts students imparting a diverse knowledge to the learning of management principles. Learning becomes interesting when too many different people carry with them equally diverse and different perspectives un-limiting their imagination posing seemingly innocuous questions! When your imagination is limitless it becomes the most conducive environment for creativity – setting the stage for innovativeness!

Students: Proof of the pudding is in the eating

Imbibing General Management Skills

The diversity that our students bring with them is representative of our nation. It instills in them the virtues of tolerance and patience; an inclination to remain accommodative and receptive to new people and cultures; and the ability to perceive matters in a larger canvas based on the ideology of the existence of broader perspectives. Here are the lessons of teamwork sown that is reaped by them in their after-programme-career-life.

Unless students are able to bring in the idea of wholesome in their perceptions they cannot conceive solutions that would be binding on society at large, its pertinence to society or business notwithstanding.

The feeling of togetherness makes one do the undoable: not only within the campus but also without it. They are quite inured to deal with it day-in and day-out.

The essence of our management education is not just theoretical comprehension of business principles and management theories but also the practical application of it. This is not possible at all times through out the entire curricula due to various constraints involved in the learning and teaching. However, what we insist as a 'must-know' aspect of it are those general management skills: a general understanding about various faculties and departments and their functions of an organization; a generic understanding about various concepts and cases or business problems pertaining to all the aspects of managing and organization and so forth.

Our Pillars of Strength

Team-work & Entrepreneurial Skills

Rome was not built in a day, we have come across this English proverb; but the essence is: Rome was not built by one individual alone, either! Team work and entrepreneurial skills might seem as opposite sides but they are of the same coin. While it encompasses the ability to think creatively, it was never understood to mean single-handedly as it is usually misinterpreted. Entrepreneurial skills and together with the ability to work in a team could be the combination that every organization would desire in a B-school graduate. We are a nursery that develops such a combo-skill.

Infrastructure

Knowledge is light that dispels the darkness of ignorance. However, in order to facilitate the transfer of it an ambience has to be created that would prove to be conducive for its fruition. Infrastructure is important to an educational institution from that stand-point.

Our Infrastructure facilities include:

Socrates once remarked: Library is a place where history comes to life – slightly modified: a delivery room for the birth of ideas! In making our library what it should be, we have taken a leaf out of Socrates’ book. This birth-place-of-ideas has an impressive collection of text books, reference materials, magazines, periodicals, newspapers, books recorded on audio-video cassettes, CD-ROMS/DVD media; access to online articles and research resources like: Pro Quest; e-journals and other electronic books and reading materials of both national and international publications and websites.

Library:

The Hostel:The idea that the intellect can be shaped-up only in the company of like-minded individuals and that they need to be gathered in one place in an environment that keeps them constantly in touch, with materials pertaining to the knowledge students would seek, is not new to Indian education system. This ekaghradha: the aspect of concentration towards seeking knowledge, and its fruits have long been known and appreciated in Indian educational system since time immemorial.

In keeping with that tradition our PGDM programme has been designed as a fully-residential programme. We have separate hostel facilities for both boys and girls with all the basic amenities within the hostel itself. Every room is well appointed with chairs, study tables and all other basic amenities.

This environment imbibes only the thoughts of sharing knowledge and information, filtering everything else out.

Computer Laboratory :

Lecture Rooms :

Activity Center :

Wi-Fi-Campus :

When each and every student is given a laptop, one might ask, what is the need of a computer laboratory? Well, even though a laptop is a matter of convenience we still require systems that have far higher computing power and capacity to store, process and access data, expeditiously. The computer laboratory facilitates this through its high-speed optical fiber network, supported by high-end servers, network solutions and power-back-up systems that promise uninterrupted access and computing hours for all our students.

There are times when the means are equally important as the ends themselves!

In the absence of a conditioned ambience imparting of knowledge is not going to be effective. All our classrooms are air-conditioned, naturally lit, has all the adequate multi-media equipments that facilitate the transfer of knowledge in all forms, video, audio, presentation and so forth. We have facilities to conduct seminars, conferences, meetings and other academic and co-curricular activities within the campus-premises.

We are mentally active so long as we are physically active! Our activity center is the center of attraction to all our students. It is designed to be an in-door play ground for games like volley ball, shuttle-badminton, basket-ball. And at times when we need to conduct our co-curricular activities this activity center can be transformed into a huge auditorium that facilitates conducting such gala events.

The entire campus is Wi-Fi-enabled so that students have uninterrupted access to internet and the world to seek, participate and collaborate for anything and everything that is pertinent to their studies that will lead them to successfully complete their PGDM programme.

Blood Donation Camp

Alumni Meet 2010 at KBS-CMR Global Campus

thOn 26 January 2010 on the thoccasion of our country's 60

thRepublic day celebration the Kohinoor Business School & Centre for Management Research (KBS-CMR)organized its 4 blood donation camp in the campus. After the flag hoisting ceremony was concluded we inaugurated the blood donation event in the campus. Over 100 students and faculty members donated blood. This year in our effort to build a rapport with the local community we organized the event in collaboration with the Khandala police and we put up a counter at the police station where a number of police officers, rickshaw drivers and other public donated blood. Pune Serological Institute collected the blood which will be used in treating thalassaemic children. Every corporation has a duty towards the society and need to contribute in what ever way it can for the betterment of the society/community around it. Blood donation is a small step in that direction. Previously the students of KBS-CMR had organized an AIDS awareness day where students took AIDS awareness classes for the high school students in Lonavala, a Clean and Green Lonavala-Khandala event where students went around cleaning their immediate surrounding and environment; visiting NAB-Lion blind home in Lonavala and many other such events. These are also a conscience-driven programme for the students who are going into the corporate world where they could contribute to their CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) programmes or initiatives based on the experience they derive from these activities. This is our contribution towards Kohinoor Group's CSR initiatives.

Every long journey begins with keeping a small step forward. – AnonymousKohinoor Business School and Centre for Management Research, for the first

thtime, organised an Alumni Meet at its Global Campus on the 30 of January 2010. It was attended by the students who graduated in the year 2009 (The first batch of 2007-2009 PGDM Students). With this Alumni Meet KBS-CMR, has initiated a very important step towards building on our network of students, who have passed out from this B-school and are now occupying critical position in various organisations, contributing to it, what they have learnt from the campus. This initiative headed by Prof. G.M. Jayaseelan, was not only to fillip this relationship from a student-academician perspective but also in facilitating our incumbents and prospective to acquire the best placement offers, today, tomorrow and for the times to come.

Human Resource Meet (Vyaktitvam) '2010

“Vyakti” or person merges with “tatva”, the natural elements to form “Vyaktitva” which means own character or individuality. Like the five fingers close into the powerful fist, the five natural elements together give form to the sixth, the Human element. Our organic entity is an orchestral convergence of wisps of the sky, puffs of air, clods of earth, drops of water, and flames of fire. “Like the natural elements come together to give form to Vyaktitva, diverse individuals are the fingers which shape the organizational fist. The Vyaktitva of the organization is the essence of its being. This organizational element lives and breathes through its distinct human elements. It has been our quest at Vyaktitvam to bring out the element in people and the organization through interventions specifically designed to enhance the performance of future managers. In short, Vyaktitvam works for unfolding the true elements of people and organizations. The key challenge is not only appropriate and contextual design but also building ownership for the implementation.

Proud Indian Campaign – 26th January 2010“For those who live, they owe their life to these: who protected it without the knowledge of those, but in doing so, gave away their own life with full knowledge of it.” – Anonymous

“The only thing required for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”– Edmund Burke ( Irish Statesman & Philosopher; 1729 – 1797 )

26th November 2008 might have shaken us all from slumber and kept many of us awake thereafter. There were lives saved & lives lost. While we make resolves clearly looking into the eyes of the morrow we rarely turn our backs to the future and face the past and those men who laid their lives so that many unknown to them would live to see the future!Proud Indian Campaign was an event to commemorate those who laid their life on the line of their duty during the terrorist attacks on the 26th November 2008. This event was inaugurated by Senior Inspector Langle, Lonavla Police Station and was accompanied by Inspector Gaud, Khandala Police Station. They commended the spirit of the students of the Kohinoor Global Campus and appreciated this noble gesture. A small movie clipping was played that evening that captured those moments that filled those dreadful days of terror attack. While watching that clipping tears quietly trickled down our cheeks but our hearts swelled in pride at our triumph over evil.

Students are the main source of the vibrant life on campus.

These committees and many informal grouping of students

organize a range of functions and events that add greatly to

the variety and dynamics of campus life. Run by an elected

full-time members, the committee organizes a wide range of

non-academic events like Alumni meet, field visit etc.

KBS encourages its students to set up committees with

clear Charter (and mission) and a set of boundaries (which

are their roles & responsibilities). The Charter of the

committees are broad and all members have enough

'space' to customize the Charter and make it their own.

Each committee member is aware of their role and the

knowledge, skills and abilities one needs for success of the

team.

Each and every committee at KBS is overseen by the Faculty

in-charge for guidance and advice. However "Processes

developed by students as committee members are the brain

for the respective committee, its work outputs are the hands

and feet, and its values, the heart.”

The Placement Process at KBS-CMR aims to match the requirements of the Corporate World with the aspirations of the students.

KBS-CMR efficient and resourceful placement cell assist and provide full support to students and work towards achieving 100 per cent placement for its students. The Final Placements are facilitated through the following processes:

The Pre-Placement Talks or Company Presentations are an opportunity for the Companies to interact with the students, understand their expectations and apprise them of the job requirements and job profiles offered.

This process usually starts in the month of August and run through the month of March. Companies are required to conduct a Pre-Placement Talk (PPT) so that they can interact with the students. This is followed by scheduling of participating companies for placements by allotting day and time when they can begin their recruitment process. The entire selection procedure of a company has to be carried out within the time frame allotted to them. Companies may

Induction 201030

stJuly 21 2010, amidst the monsoon-showers, cool breezes swept across the landscaped gardens spraying through its fold, foams of mist; the Sahyadri Hills stood draped itself in a sari of grey clouds, with lush green grasses and creepers holding each other in an imbricate-pattern, whilst, quietly in one corner of Khandala at Kohinoor Global Campus, a new Post-graduate management academic session: PGDM 2010–2012 was born!

As with every year, at the outset of every new-academic session, the incumbent seniors in the campus conduct a programme to warm-up the new-students and offer them an opportunity to let their hair down and break the ice among their counter-parts. An event which encourages the new students to mingle with each other; to show-case their talents; to acquaint them with the Campus environment and other formalities related to their academic pursuit of management education, inviting them to an exciting and an intellectually invigorating environment.

Various programmes were organised by the seniors and the juniors (new-academic students) participated and contended in it. There were Guest speakers who spoke on topics like: leadership skills; careers after management programme; sector-outlook and so forth. Those lectures were interspersed with a bridge-course on Quantitative techniques and Accounting concepts and some cultural programmes like: singing, dancing, elocution; games: stock-trading, name-games, team-building and many more.
