Transfer Project: „30 - foot tarpaulin container”
Technology Transfer Facilitator: Wolfgang SchabereiterCompany name: Montanspeditions GmbHName of Transferinstitute: Transsystems- UNI Leoben
KBB - Knowledge for Business in Border regions
Target sector: transport of goods in the bimodal traffic
Size of the company: 30 people
Location: Kapfenberg/Styria
Founded: 1973
Description of the Company:
KBB - Knowledge for Business in Border regions
Content of the Technology Transfer Project
Development of a 30-foot tarpaulin container
• Weight saving - construction and material
• Functional design –
flexibility
KBB - Knowledge for Business in Border regions
Weight issue:
The average weight of a multifunctional 30-foot container is between 3,800 - 4,500 kg: about 75 % of the empty weight is allotted to the platform and frame structure, about 25 % on the cover (walls, doors, shutters and roofing).
-> The target weight for the new 30-foot-tarpaulin-container max. 3,500 kg!
Functional design and flexibility issues:
The optimal loading and unloading of containers from the customer's perspective is an important decision criterion in the selection of the logistics partner. - Flexibility means the best possible loading and unloading with
common devices (such as fork lift) must be guaranteed. - Ability to load and unload the means of transport on several
points (from the side, from behind, from above).

KBB - Knowledge for Business in Border regions
The greatest benefit for customers is primarily the design of the 30-foot tarpaulin-container. Through flexible and ample loading and unloading potential of that type of container there are easier logistics processes for customers than before, which also brings an enormous time saver. Further benefit for customers is on the economic level. Because of the flexibility unloaded drives can largely be prevented, resulting in a significantly more attractive prices for customers.
Simulation is useful in the product development process.Benefits are:
• Better visualization• Review of product functionality already
during development• Flexible product development • Reduction of product defects and recalls• Shorter development time, more cost-
effective, high quality weight optimization
• consideration of components of high complexity in total system

Tasks of the TTFs
KBB - Knowledge for Business in Border regions
- Find an appropriate research institute
- Do the planning and the controlling of the projects (time frame, working packages, costs (just of the TT project))
- Make the necessary reports
- Support the company in the market implementation phase (where possible)
- Ensure the next steps are taken: Write project proposals for further funding (SFG, FFG, ERA …)
- Evalutation: TTF and company evaluating the TTF
Tasks of the TTFs
KBB - Knowledge for Business in Border regions
- To find an appropriate research institute (time frame, money, understanding) - -> exchange rather than transfer
- Ensure, that a common language is spoken
- Be strict with the controlling of the projects - too many projects in the companies, - very little time, not enough staff, money issue ..- too many ideas …
- Ensure that information is passed on, stay in touch
- Get useful feedback, to be able to improve performance
