Geophysical survey of engineering structures
and natural objects
Almaty, 2014
Geophysical surveys
• In 2012, the Kazakhstan Agency of Applied Ecology
started using the non-destructive testing of engineering
structures and natural objects.
• Building structures, facilities, architectural complexes,
road surface pavements and groundwater can be
analysed without any damage caused to their surface
or internal structure.
• The principle of directional transmission of
electromagnetic waves and seismic signals to the
object and recording the echo reflected from them
underlies in the basis of the NDT method.
• The decrypting of received signal gives us the most
accurate characteristics of the object or area.
• The method allows to detect physical objects, aquifers,
voids, pipelines and infrastructure hidden inside the
ground and buildings, under asphalt and concrete
pavement.
• KAPE has a full range of diagnostic
systems and related software:
• Georadar system «MALA Geoscience»;
• Geoelectric multielectrode station
SCALA 48;
• Multichannel seismic acquisition system
Lakkolit XM-3.
Seismic engineering station Lakkolit XM-3.
Scope and objectives
Seismograms in processing
- Survey of geological condition of
construction sites as a part of
engineering survey;
- Hydrogeological survey (determining
ground water level);
- Survey of earth dams and dam slopes
(determining depression curve in dam
body and in channel slopes);
- Localization of anomalous zones (with
decompression, humidification
processes).
Seismic engineering station Lakkolit XM-3.
Hydrogeological survey of sites, areas and other objects Measuring groundwater level and
determining its profiles Study of earth dam and dam slopes
Determining depression curve in dam
body and embankment of canal

Multielectrode Electrical Exploration Station Scala 48
Survey of Geotechnical Condition of Site
and Determining Lithological Layers
This method is based on measuring specific electric resistance of different rock
formations. It allows to identify various layers, their thickness and then to draw a
map of bedrock foundation roof.

Geoelectric cross-section showing positions of projected support structures
Multielectrode Electrical Exploration Station SCALA 48.
Mapping of bedrock foundation roof
Determining spatial contours and thickness
of layers with mapping of geological cross-sections
Analysis of hazardous geological processes
and mapping of geological structures
Based on the results of geoelectric
cross-sections processing, a detailed
geological cross-section image is
prepared where each layer thickness
can be seen.

- quality control and checking compliance with design solutions for reinforcement of
foundations, walls, ceilings, etc.
Surveys carried out in the course of facility maintenance:
- Determining the thickness of concrete protective coating
- Determining the depth of reinforcement bars and degree of their deformation
- Identification of distances between reinforcement bars, mapping of the entire
reinforcement grid in inside the structure
Inspection of Hydraulic Structures
- Inspection of concrete structures, culverts,
spillways to determine remaining thickness
of protective layer, presence of
reinforcement and its potential deformation
