Letter from Midlands, SC Kappa Delta Alumnae

Chapter President...

Dear K∆ Sisters,

On April 1st our Midlands, SC Kappa Delta Alumnae Chapter submitted its National Alum-

nae Annual Form 2014 – 2015. Last year, I submitted the same form, but it was only 5

finished pages. This year it was 15 finished pages! We were amazing this year!

Our membership as of today is 90 members

We have contributed to ALS, Sistercare, Nurturing Center, Girl Scouts Troop #532, and

our Military Troops overseas

We have supported Beta Zeta Chapter at USC and thru our Facebook page individual re-

quests from other Chapters of our AC members

Our AC has been on WLTX TV twice – The ALS Walk and the Ice Bucket Challenge

We have already been highlighted in The Angelos!

We are working hard to make this Alumnae Chapter, your Chapter. One that will be here

for years to come, and that is happening because of everyone’s support. Thank you to all for

saying yes when asked to volunteer your time, talent or treasure.

So what is next…. continued friendship, sisterhood, and helping our community. That is what

our AC is all about, growing together as sisters and enriching our community in the Mid-

lands.

Love in AOT,

Kelly Johnson Davis Beta Zeta ‘77

Alumnae Chapter Member Spotlight

Holly Lovern—Zeta Nu (Lynchburg College) AC member, Holly Lov-

ern, is a graduate of

Lynchburg College in

Lynchburg, Virginia.

We are thrilled to fea-

ture Holly in this issue

and her work on sexu-

al assault awareness.

Alumnae Chapter: What positions did you hold while in

Kappa Delta at Lynchburg?

Holly Lovern: I was VP-Public Relations & Gracious Liv-

ing Chair.

AC: How has KΔ included you as an alumnae?

HL: As an alumnae, KΔ fostered my transition to grad-

uate school and the first time moving out of Virginia.

Within two weeks of moving to Columbia, I had met

several members of the alumnae chapter and it really

helped it [Columbia] feel like home. I also work with

several different aspects of Fraternity & Sorority Life

at USC and I can convey to the students I work with

how the experience truly isn’t just four years, but a

lifelong investment.

AC: What graduate program are you in at USC?

HL: Higher Education & Student Affairs M. Ed. Pro-

gram

AC: Explain your field of study and your goals with it.

HL: Essentially, I want to work on college campuses for

the rest of my life. There are a lot of different parts of the

field, but long-term I am focusing on the first-year expe-

rience. I believe the first semester of college is critical for

students and I want to help connect them to the resources

they need to not only succeed, but get involved and en-

gaged in the campus community. I think helping students

set themselves up for success is a huge determinant in how

the rest of their experience is going to be!

AC: What made you want to raise awareness on sexual as-

sault?

HL: I took a Sexuality & Gender Studies course my junior

year of undergrad and became aware of the issue of sexual

assault on college campuses. I had several friends experi-

ence some form of interpersonal violence during our four

years and realized that the national statistic of 1 in 5

women was something that truly affected the individuals

around me. I did my senior thesis on sexual assault and

prevention programming for college campuses and in do-

ing that research, really found a passion for advocating for

survivors and working to change the culture around us.

Then I came to USC and my position just incorporated a

lot of things I wanted to work with together!

AC: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

HL: The best advice I’ve ever received comes from my Dad.

Growing up, before I left for school every day, he would

tell me to “Make today a big time day!” It has stuck with

me for twenty some years and just reminds me to max-

imize the day and do what I can to make an impact.

Spring Shamrock Event

On March 26, Carol Doonan opened up her fabulous boutique, Fab’rik for our Alumnae

Chapter to shop, sip and enjoy each other’s company! 20% of all sales went towards

Shamrock fundraising efforts and attendees could participate in a raffle for a Fab’rik

necklace and a $50 gift certificate to Tazza Kitchen.

Overall, $361 was raised! 80% of the proceeds ($289) was donated locally to

the Nurturing Center and the remaining 20% ($72) went to Kappa Delta

Foundation Children in Need.
