Worldwide, 100 World Heritage forestsprotect more than 76 million hectares of woodland. This accounts for 1.9 percent of the global forest cover andabout 13 percent of the surface area ofall protected forests on the planet. The World Heritage Sustainable Tourism
Programme helps visitors discover WorldHeritage sites while encouraging respect ofthe environment and local cultures andenhancing community livelihoods.
World Heritage sites are inscribed on theList on the basis of their merits as forminga significant contribution to the culturaland natural heritage of the world. Theiroutstanding universal value is consideredto go beyond national boundaries and tobe of importance for future generations.
Conserving the diversity of life on Earth iscritical to global human welfare. With thesupport of the World Heritage Convention,the most important biodiversity sitesreceive international recognition as well astechnical and financial assistance to dealwith threats such as agricultural encroach-ment, alien species and poaching.
The Earthen Architecture ConservationProgramme works toward conserving andrevitalizing earthen architecture, which isthreatened by natural disasters and indus-trialization. Currently, some one hundredproperties on the World Heritage List arepartially or totally built with earth.
The World Heritage Marine Programmehelps countries nominate marine sites andmanage them effectively to ensure that theywill thrive for future generations. There arecurrently 43 marine sites on the WorldHeritage List.
Cultural heritage refers to monuments,buildings and sites with historical, aesthetic,archaeological, scientific, ethnological oranthropological value. Natural heritagerefers to outstanding physical, biological orgeological features and includes habitats ofthreatened species, as well as areas with scientific, environmental or aesthetic value. Mixed sites have both cultural and natural values.
The World Heritage emblem symbolizesthe interdependence of the world’s naturaland cultural diversity. The central squarerepresents the achievements of human skilland inspiration, and the circle celebratesthe gifts of nature. The emblem is round,like the world, a symbol of global protec-tion for the heritage of all humankind.

of these places, as varied as they are, have one thing in common.All are World Heritage sites of outstanding cultural or naturalvalue to humanity and are worthy of protection for future generations to know and enjoy.
The World Heritage Cities Programmeseeks to protect living historic city centresand their cultural and architectural her-itage from threats such as uncontrolleddevelopment or inappropriate construction.
The Small Islands Programme focuses onpreserving heritage on the islands of theCaribbean Sea and the Atlantic, Pacificand Indian oceans.

Graceful, grass-covered mounds in Gyeongju Historic Areas (Republic of Korea),cover royal tombs from the Silla Kingdom, which spanned a thousand years endingin A.D. 935. Throughout, Gyeongju pagodas, temples, stone engravings and statuesrecall the flowering of Korean Buddhism in the Silla capital.
More than 150 statues stand guard beneath elaborate murals depicting the life of the Buddha at the Golden Temple of Dambulla in Sri Lanka. A Buddhist pilgrimage site for 22 centuries, the complex of cave-sanctuaries is hewn from solid rock, providing meditation space for monks.
Costa Rica’s Area de Conservación Guanacaste protects linked ecosystems of dry forest, cloud forestand rain forest. Animal species migrate among the zones seasonally — behavior vital to their survivalas global climate change risks shifting the temperature and rainfall patterns in dry forests.
First a rich Phoenician port and then a magnificent Roman city, theArchaeological Site of Leptis Magna (Libyan Arab Jamahiriya) now offers archaeologists both grand public buildings and smaller, privatestructures for excavation. Founded around 1100 B.C., its temples, bathsand enormous amphitheatre still awe visitors.
Australia’s Lord Howe Island Group emerged as part of a massive shield volcano in the Pacific some seven million years ago. Now eroded into sharp,rocky peaks, some covered in lush forests or grasslands, the islands providehomes or nesting stopovers for at least 168 species of bird.
Twyfelfontein, an ancient gallery of engravings and paintings on sandstone, lies inNamibia’s Aba-Huab Valley. The artworks, most of which were created more than 2,000years ago, include abstract designs, people, animals and mythological creatures.
The ruins of a Doric temple tower over present-day orchards inthe Archaeological Area of Agrigento, Italy, reminding visitors ofthe ancient city’s prosperity and power. A Greek colonial outpostfounded on the island of Sicily in the 6th century B.C., Agrigentoquickly became a vibrant port and marketplace.

Vast Saharan dunes in Niger’s Air and Tenéré Natural Reserves are part of the largest protected area in Africa, covering almost 77,000 km2. Despite the unforgiving climate, many plants and animals — including endangered addax and gazelles — thrive near desert oases and in the rugged Aïr mountains.

he United Nations Educational, Scientific and CulturalOrganization (UNESCO) works with countries aroundthe world to identify and protect cultural and naturalplaces that merit recognition as part of the common
heritage of humankind. UNESCO adopted the Conventionconcerning the Protection of the World Cultural and NaturalHeritage in 1972. Since then, 187 countries have ratified thetreaty, and at present 911 properties are inscribed on the List— 704 of which are cultural, 180 natural and 27 mixed (a combination of the two).
