This plan will guide important decisions around development, land use and servicing in the community. Your input is important, and a public open house is being held to gather feedback on the draft document prior to village and county councils adopting the plan.

Wednesday, March 13 | 7 - 9 p.m. Pioneer Recreation Centre (5335-50A Ave., Warburg)

*A presentation will be made at 8 p.m.

This open house will be an informal drop-in event and will give the public an opportunity to learn about the project, speak with members of the project team, and provide comment on the draft plan.

Pink Shirt / Kindness Day at Warburg School! We strive to be kind everyday but on Feb 27th, 2019, we encouraged everyone to practice kindness and wear pink to symbolize that we do not tolerate bullying.

A Formal Affair outreach program, sponsored by The Warburg Parent/School Society, provid-ed an opportunity for elementary students to get a close look at a penguin from West Edmonton Mall’s African penguins. The Marine Life edu-cator explained to the students the variety of penguin species found in the wild and what characteristics make penguins birds. Penguins are endangered and discussion about what we can do to help these wonderful birds, as well as other wild animals.was an important part of the presentation.

Local Innovator Passes AwayFrom Gerald Foster

40 years ago over half the Combine Harvest-ers used on North American Farms were built in Canada. Today that number is zero. Despite this, a small company located in Leduc County thrived on Research and Development for har-vesting technology.

Dale MacKenzie was the President of this Company (Sunnybrook Welding), but passed away last week after a short fight with cancer.

The company generated 17 patents over the past 2 decades, many were assigned to manufacturing interests for use in production machines. An advanced cylinder design was able to conserve power and fuel, to the tune that it’s advent can be credited with conserv-ing 30 million gallons of diesel fuel not being burned. That’s 3 Exxon Valdez loads of fuel. Sunnybrook Welding also developed a wear enhancement process called Thermochemical Boronizing that is quickly becoming the indus-try standard, replacing an environmental night-mare know as hardchroming (see movie Erin Brokovich).

Every modern combine harvester you see in the fields in the fall has been influenced in its’ design by a small company in Leduc County!

The company has been a solid employer for 40 years in the county and it is with great sorrow we see the passing of this innovator, father, husband and friend.

Protecting Alberta’s Health Care System

Recently, Jason Kenney talked about his intention to freeze health care spending and privatize services in Al-berta. Considering our aging population, growing popu-lation, and inflation, this would effectively represent a massive cut to services. Wait times will rise and patients will suffer. This is why investment must keep up with the needs of Albertans.

Additionally, Mr. Kenney has spent his entire life fighting for privatized two-tiered health care, and today he con-tinues to do so. He claimed that he would follow through on the UCP’s founding convention resolution and that this would somehow protect public health care. The problem with this is that resolution talks about moving to “privately-delivered health services” to “give Albertans the choice of privately funded, privately delivered health care services.”

This would be two-tier, American-style health care.

It would allow wealthy people to jump the queue, leaving the rest of us to wait even longer. And those private clin-ics he’s talking about operate on the healthiest patients, leaving more complex patients to the public system.

“Private, for profit healthcare lengthens public wait times because they restrict who can use them – the easier the client the more profit they can make. They pick cli-ents who are relatively healthy and have problems with basic fixes, and complicated procedures are expensive. If anything goes wrong, patients get referred to the pub-lic system, often jumping ahead of others. That’s why it takes longer. Express lanes might work well in a gro-cery store, but in the health system there aren’t extra surgeons, radiologists or nurses waiting around empty operating rooms.” – Canadian Health Coalition

And removing professionals from the public system means fewer professionals to see patients who can’t af-ford to pay extra, meaning even longer wait times for just about everyone.

A recording of UCP candidate Miranda Rosin that sur-faced last week shows very clearly where they stand on private health care. She vowed to bring in a two-tiered system “so that we can get those who have worked hard for their money to get out of the system if they would

From Kieran Quirke, Alberta NDP Candidate

for Drayton Valley-Devon

like to.”

This is just wrong. Many hard-working Albertans do their best to take care of their families, but still can’t afford US-style health care bills. Accessing the care you need shouldn’t depend on what your last credit card state-ment looks like. This is one of our greatest values as Albertans and Canadians; our healthcare must remain publicly funded and delivered so quality services are available to everyone, regardless of income.

We cannot change the ethic of healthcare in Alberta. Access to healthcare should be based on need, not a person’s ability to pay.

The United Nurses of Alberta is extremely concerned by Jason Kenney’s idea of privatizing health care. Decades of research and experience indicate it’s not more effect-ive and it actually wastes money needed for essential public services. “Our concern is not just about protecting publicly funded health care, it is about wasting public money on private health care,” UNA President Heather Smith said.

In Alberta, private surgical clinics bidding in the pub-lic system was tried and it left Albertans with the costs when the surgical corporation went bankrupt.

It’s clear that with Mr. Kenney’s plan, your quality of health care will depend on how deep your pockets are. He is not a leader for all Albertans.

You can count on Rachel Notley and this government to protect patient care. She has fought for it her entire life. Her government added 1,200 doctors and 1,200 nurses to meet increasing patient demand and to improve care after years of failure by the previous government to do so. Projects that had been promised for decades have also finally moved forward like the Calgary Cancer Cen-tre, the South Edmonton Hospital and the expansion of dialysis units in Lac La Biche, Whitecourt, Edson and Hinton.

Rachel Notley and our team will protect and improve our public healthcare system so all Albertans get the care they and their loved ones need.

As your Alberta NDP Candidate for Drayton Valley-Devon, I’m always happy to speak with you about the issues that matter in rural Alberta and in our commun-ities. I want to hear your thoughts on issues and plans that will affect our province, our community, and your family.

If you have any questions or concerns, or you would like to get involved, please write to me at [email protected] I look forward to hearing from you!
