in developed countries, the communica-

ing books and getting themselves used to
multimedia. Today's Summit is attended
by ENT doctors from all the medical col-
leges across Karachi. This is the first con-
ference of its kind in which young doctors

KARACHI: The Financial Analyst Ateeq Ur Rehmanwhile thanking the State Bank of Pakistan has said thatRefinancing Facility for Modernization of SMEs Mark-up rate under the SBP scheme is up to 6.0 percent (2 per-cent SBP refinance rate and 4 percent banks' spread) butthe Commercial Banks are reluctant to lend to SMEs thatis the financial management or supply chain financing ofSMEs are totally neglected despite Central Bank's effortto redirect the focus of SME development in a greaterextent, says a Press release.
Ateeq Said that SMEs of Pakistan are still under creditconstraints under this Roller Coaster Economy simplybecause of the challenges and unavailable oppor-tunities for access to finance. Further, the riskmitigation policy reveals that SME NPLs (non-performing loans) has been reduced to less than 4percent and its role has been vibrant as "drivers ofgrowth", still the preference is missing under thefinancing policies of the authorities.
He said Pakistan's SME sector which con-tributes 40% to the GDP, constitutes 90% of theenterprises, employs 80% non-agricultural work-er and contributes 25% to the exports has beenneglected and ignored by previous governments.SMEs are the back bone of our economy and arefacing major challenges specially the highest util-ity charges, hike in interest rate, complicated andhigher rate of taxation, collateral and governmentpolicies.
Further, in such high interest rate environmentit is unlikely that SMEs sector can trigger expan-sion or increase investment. The lackluster per-formance in overall economic sector reflected theoverall economic slowdown in the ongoing fiscalyear. It is so difficult to understand as to why, thissector is missing from the financial infrastructureof Pakistan only on supplication of doubtfulfinances including non-performing loans in thepast and has resulted in erosion of equity.
Pakistan's economic downturn has indeed exac-erbated these problems. Growing cost of doing
business and high cost of production has attributed toPakistani SME Difficulties. Due to hike in cost of import-ed raw material and Rupee depreciation against USDcoupled with additional custom duty from 4% to 11% andadditional sales tax , all these extra cost are being aloneborn by SMEs and they are continuously absorbing theselosses on their balance sheets.
Absence of finance has frustrated the development ofthis vital segment of the economy. It still remains finan-cially excluded. Ateeq said Support to SME is eminentfor the Job Growth, alleviating poverty and BolsteringEconomic Growth.

They in a statement issuedin Karachi strongly criticizedthe stoppage of gas to industri-al estates of Karachi by SuiSouthern Gas Company Ltd,resulting in serious loss of pro-ductivity. They expressedtheir displeasure that industri-alists of Karachi had to resortto sit-ins on this issue.
They underscored the needto provide basic amenities likewater, power and gas so thatindustrialists can focus theirattention on increasing pro-ductivity and meeting exporttargets rather than protestingon the streets.
