Principal’s Report Phase 1 Return to School – Starting Monday May 11 (Week 3)

Kanwal, thank you for your considerations during these interesting times. We are following the evolving advice from the Department of Education and please note this information is correct as of Wednesday May 6.

Students at school one day per week.

Follow health advice and keep your child home if they are unwell.

Parents and carers, stay in the car for drop offs and pick-ups – as per Department of Education guidelines.

If you choose to keep your child at home rather than come to school on their rostered day during this crisis, then you need to let the school know, either through class dojo or by contacting the office. Students will only be marked as absent on these days if we have no contact with the parent and/or no work is completed.

Children will need to bring their recess and lunch as the canteen is not open at this stage.

Please see below the allocated day for your child/ren to attend school.

Families with siblings with different surnames will be contacted by the school office. If you have not been contacted by Friday 8 May please call the office 4392 3477.

Take Home Art Kit (One per family)

On behalf of the KPS community, I would like to congratulate the wonderful Mrs Karen Tracey who has recently completed an Art Therapist Diploma Course. Mrs Tracey in collaboration with Mrs Baigent and Miss Wills have constructed a series of engaging art lessons that are being supported by a take home art pack that will be issued in the coming days. Like the mathematics resources, these art resources are from the school to support learning from home.

This week every child will receive this AWESOME Maths pack which includes wonderful resources such as counters, dice and playing cards.

Included in this pack are some fun activities, so fun in fact that your child won’t believe they are doing maths! There are a variety of activities in

each pack, hopefully to suit the varying degrees of ability and interests. Everything your child needs to be able to do the activities is included in

the pack.

Rejuvenating our playground A massive thank you to our wonderful team of support staff who spent some time over the past weeks helping to repaint some of our school. The benches look sensational as do the poles in the Rainbow Cola. We also had a small team led by some of our Student Support Officers in the unit, complete a new mural that can be seen from the side street. We have a great team working here at KPS.

Kindergarten news Welcome back to Kindergarten for Term 2. The children have already been very busy with their learning and submitting quality work to their teachers. They have been focusing on rhyming words, sight words, writing new words, number talks, counting forwards and backwards, mass and finding objects that are ‘heavy or light’ in their homes. They even completed a day of Star Wars activities to help develop their creativity, imagination and learn through dramatic play. K Harris - Elliot showing us he can put objects in order from lightest to heaviest; Indi showing us her quality Soundwaves work; Honey’s quality handwriting and correct letter formation.

Writing example – Crash!

Lego goes flying everywhere! At that point, Lawrence, the Lego man realised he was all alone and that there was no one else there with him. He started to panic a little. He was frantically looking around for someone to come help him with this situation.

Suddenly, a little boy came to help him fix it but the damage was so great he couldn't do it alone. The little boy ran and got his parents. The parents eventually came to the rescue to fix the little boy's lego helicopter. As they were sticking all the pieces back together, they noticed they were missing a piece.

The little boy scrambled across the ground trying to find it. Every single footstep he took he felt like he was getting closer and closer, until he stopped looking. No matter how hard he searched, he couldn’t find the missing piece anywhere. He told his parents that he couldn't find it, so they had to make the helicopter with the pieces they had and that did not turn out well. By Mitchell R

Writing example – Teeth I used to have a friend that went fishing with me all the time day and night. One day we were in the boat, I sneezed and my teeth fell out. He just sat there and laughed, so then I turned my back on him.

He kept on fishing and so did I after that he caught a fish and put his false teeth in the fish's mouth. I picked out the teeth and placed them in my mouth but they didn’t feel right. I soon realised he had put his false teeth in the fish’s mouth to make it look like the fish had bit the false teeth! By Summer

Writing example - Write a conversation between an adult southern beech tree and a baby southern beech tree.

“Are you ready for your birthday?” asked the adult southern beech tree. “Mummy I’m scared of my first birthday,” the little beech tree whimpered. The mother laughed softly. “Let me tell you a story of my first Autumn,” her daughter, always excited for a story, looked eagerly at her mother. “I had this exact same conversation with my mum, your grandmother. She explained to me all the exciting things that happen on your very first birthday. But before I give you the details, let me ask you a question. Would you like Winter?” The mini beech tree gave her opinion, “I have never experienced Winter, but I expect it to be very cold, not at all like Summer! I think that I do not like the cold season,” Mother beech tree smiled at her smart daughter. “Quite right! I don’t like Winter either, but we still have to prepare for it. Now, what is worse, losing all your leaves for three months and being a teensy bit cold, or keep your warm leaves in Winter but your branches will be permanently damaged?” Little beech tree laughed at her mum for asking such an easy question. “Shedding my leaves ought to be the answer, mother!” “Absolutely! Plus, your leaves will be a beautiful shade of green in the summer!” The small beech tree beamed at her mother, “I’m ready for my birthday!” by Melanie

Writing example – Crash!

I clamber out of the cockpit and roll onto the grass. “Cough!” The dust flew all over my destroyed helicopter in the crash and is now filling my plastic lungs. I clear my throat and start looking at what I have to work with. Almost all of the choppa is destroyed save for the cockpit and the blade. I look around to see bricks scattered all over the ground. I grab the closest bricks and start repairing my broken aircraft...

The choppa is half done. I dust off my hands and stand back to admire my handiwork. All the main parts of the vehicle but there are no connector bricks or wind screens. I hop inside the pilot seat and start lift off. It’s very rickety and wobbles but I can fly. I hover close to the ground and slowly move forward. I don’t fall out but it definitely is not pleasant. A few bricks go hurtling past as they get knocked off from the wind. I decide to go higher to clear the trees in the woods. “Steady, steady!” I make it. I look up and am shocked to be greeted by a ball of ice sprinting towards the ground. A hail storm.

Smash! A hailstone breaks the whole choppa and I go plummeting to the ground. But then I see it. Below, a swimming pool. I'm made of LEGO so I would float. Splash! I’m ok. I swim to the edge of the pool and climb out. I spy a small hole in the bush and decide to go have a sleep. I need this rest after my huge adventure. By Gethin
