Coffective Note Have you thought about Health Equity? Coffective materials can be used with everyone but we should all be sensitive to cultural differences as we use the materials. That’s the nice thing about the Coffective laminated counseling sheets. Moms can tell staff what interests them on the counseling sheets instead of a counselor telling a client what they think they need to know. Counseling techniques may need to be tweaked to fit the needs of an African American or Native American family. ACTION REQUIRED: All staff should be implementing Coffective action steps and collecting stories to include in your evaluation of your Nutrition Services Plan action steps. Division of Responsibility Tidbit We now know to set a time for meals and snacks, provide healthy food choices and let the child decide how much and whether they will eat. There is another piece that might affect the outcome. Children, especially young children, absorb much from the adults around them. They probably notice more than caregivers realize. Children are sometimes described as little sponges, soaking up what we say, how we say it, what our face looks like when we say something and what we actually do. Children notice when adults eat certain foods and not others. Children hear adults say, “I don’t like broccoli” or “I think spinach is gross.” Children develop a picture of themselves when adults discuss how they behave, such as “she just won’t eat, she is so picky.” To help children develop healthy eating habits, adults need to model healthy eating behavior. Adults can talk about healthy eating, but if they don’t eat healthy foods, children notice and find it confusing that we want them to eat something we do not eat. If there is something we don’t like, we can model how to handle this. The adult tries some of everything that is served, then if there is something the adult doesn’t like they can say, “I tried it, but I don’t think I will eat it today.” Or we might say, “I tried it, but I don’t think I like it. I will try it again next time and then I might eat it.” And we don’t make a fuss about it.

You will find a handout on our website you can print. It is titled Be a Healthy Role Model and has some tips to get caregivers started on “being a good example.” ACTION REQUIRED: Share these ideas with appropriate staff and pass them on, along with the handout, to WIC clients. New and Updated WIC Materials Some items are no longer available through the WIC Publications Order form. Discontinued items include: Spanish only version of Early Childhood Caries, English version of One Great Plate for Children and the Breastfeeding International Symbol sticker. The Childhood Caries and One Great Plate items are no longer available from their respective companies. A new item is the English version of MyPlate Preschool-Start Early With a Healthy Plate. This replaces the discontinued One Great Plate for Children. There are some of the Spanish version of One Great Plate remaining. When these run out they will be replaced by the MyPlate Preschool in Spanish. Two more items now available through the WIC Publications Order form are the English and English/Spanish versions of the eWIC client education DVD. These were first announced in the 8/9/18 eWIC Weekly Lowdown email. These are for use at the clinic and not for distribution to clients. These DVDs may be ordered now, but shipping may take a few weeks. There are five other ways that clinics and clients can access this informative video – see the 8/9/18 eWIC Weekly Lowdown email to find out how. The English and Spanish WIC Shopper App brochures and the English eWIC brochures have been updated, printed and are ready to order at brushartwicmaterials.com. Updates include a few minor copy edits and pictures of the new User Interface for the Kansas WIC Shopper App. (Once you are at brushartwichealth.com, the user name is: [email protected] and the password is: sunflower.) These updated materials should be used after you run out of your current supply of Shopper App and eWIC brochures. Please do not recycle older versions. ACTION REQUIRED: Share this information with all pertinent WIC staff, especially those with material ordering responsibilities. Kansas eWIC News—FINAL issue! The August FINAL issue of Kansas eWIC News is included with this memo and also is available on the website at http://www.kansaswic.org/local_agencies/eWIC.htm. ACTION REQUIRED: Have all staff read Kansas eWIC News. New Breastfeeding Campaign: WIC Breastfeeding Support; Learn Together. Grow Together

This is an email that the SA recently received from the FNS regional office:

FNS is excited to announce the launch of a new breastfeeding campaign, WIC Breastfeeding Support Learn Together. Grow Together. Campaign materials are available through an updated “WIC Breastfeeding Support” website geared towards WIC moms. Here is the website: https://wicbreastfeeding.fns.usda.gov/

Regardless of whether a WIC mom is new to breastfeeding, or has previous breastfeeding experience, she can explore the various stages of her breastfeeding journey. The website provides information, answers to common questions, ways to overcome challenges and more to help WIC moms breastfeed as much as they can, for as long as they can.

Family and friends will find resources, including videos from real dads and grandparents, to learn more about breastfeeding and how they can support mom and baby on their breastfeeding journey.

Likewise, WIC partners and staff can access resources to download, print and share with moms to help them meet their breastfeeding goals. Some resources, such as Grow and Glow in WIC, are now available on the WIC Works Resource System.

If you have bookmarked any resources on the Loving Support site, please take a moment to change them accordingly to ensure you maintain quick access to your favorite resources. As always, you can contact the WIC Works team with questions.

ACTION REQUIRED: Review the new materials and determine how your LA will use them to continue providing excellent breastfeeding support to our families. Contact Kara Watts at [email protected] to discuss ideas or questions. Pediasure Sidekicks –retail vs institutional versions Retail Pediasure Sidekicks has recently been reformulated to include 10g protein/serving and is 0.75 kcal/ml (180 kcal/bottle). Institutional Pediasure Sidekicks continues to have 7g protein/serving and is 0.63 kcal/ml (150 kcal/bottle). Both are approved by WIC. It is important that if you get a request for Pediasure Sidekicks that you confirm which version the doctor prescribed, and make sure to assess whether the product is appropriate for the client prior to issuing. Remember, there are limited medical nutrition needs for this product. Clients can purchase the retail version through the grocery side but must get the institutional version through the pharmacy (case UPC = 070074565231, container UPC = 070074565248). KWIC food packages now differentiate between the two products – look for the word “retail” or “institutional” when determining which one to issue. The next revision of the Appendix I, expected at the beginning of October, will include these differences. ACTION REQUIRED: Inform applicable staff and ensure appropriate issuance of the correct product. Review the Pediatric Medical Formulas FAQ for additional information regarding the Pediasure line of products. Contact Kara Watts at [email protected] with questions regarding formulas. Nutrition Services Plan Assessment Reminder Thanks to everyone who is already diligently working on their 2019 NSP! As a reminder, if the report is asking for specific data (eg. # child care providers with BF training), please look at the potential action plan steps listed in the NSP document and see if there is guidance and a link for how to find that information. If you still have problems finding the data, please reach out to your SA nutrition lead, do not reach out to the Kansas Breastfeeding Coalition. Thank you! ACTION REQUIRED: Review potential action steps provided in the NSP document to find requested data.

Kansas eWIC News

Dear Kansas WIC Staff,

This is our final Kansas eWIC News, as the entire state has now fully rolled out and by August 31, 2018, there will be no more checks in circulation! In this final issue of eWIC News, we will highlight a few moments from the Shawnee County eWIC Celebration that took place on July 25, 2018.

Once again, we cannot thank our Local Agency staff members enough for all your hard work in helping clients smoothly transition to eWIC. You should all be very proud of this WIC milestone that will go down in history.

Warm regards,

David Thomason, Kansas WIC Director

Stop using “Check Pick-Up” appointment type

Remember, with eWIC, you want to use “Food Benefits Appointment” (FBA) instead of “Check Pick-Up” because soon that appointment type will be going away and that will affect how future appointments appear in the Appointment Book if they still have “Check Pick-Up” planned in the Flowsheet.

Bottom line? Start using “Food Benefits Appointment” today instead of “Check Pick-Up” and you will be all set!

Key Dates August 31-Anticipated expiration date of last check in circulation

In This Issue • Stop using “Check Pick-Up”

Celebration and Thank-You!

Thank-You All! To all WIC staff throughout Kansas,

Please accept the sincere appreciation of all the WIC staff here at KDHE for your part in the successful transition to eWIC in the Kansas WIC Program. eWIC, perhaps the biggest change ever in WIC, has been very well received. From the earliest mention of the eWIC concept through to design, development, testing, pilot and statewide rollout, everyone has been very supportive and positive about the changes. We have received many expressions of praise from participants and vendors and also from you, the front-line staff of the local WIC clinics.

Thank you for the many hours you spent reading new policies, going through the eWIC tool kit and for participating in the various webinars and conference calls. Thank you for the time you have spent talking with and giving support to WIC participants and grocery store staff. Thank you for many hours on the phone asking very good questions. All of this effort helped make the eWIC project the success it has been.

Perhaps, like you, we are ready to get back to some sort of “normal.” We look forward to seeing most of you at the upcoming state-wide WIC conference to be held in Manhattan April 30-May 1, 2019. While together, we’ll plan to celebrate this great accomplishment. Thank you, thank you, everyone!!!!!!

Give yourself a hand!

Shawnee County eWIC Celebration and Thank-You!

On July 25, 2018, KDHE presented the WIC staff of the Shawnee County Health Department a recognition plaque for their tireless work in being the “Pilot” eWIC agency from September through December of last year.

Each staff member received a certificate of appreciation for their work in being the first to use the new eWIC version of the KWIC system and helping to identify and fix bugs a nd other unanticipated issues. They also helped develop effective workarounds, when necessary. Because of their efforts, the KWIC system you received from

January through May was an improved version without major issues. And even today, Shawnee County staff are testing the new “Retailor” feature in KWIC. Thank you, Shawnee County!
