PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

Hello car club, it’s me again. Thank you for your vote of confidence in electing me as

your president. It was a hard fought campaign, with no Russian interference I managed

to squeak by.

I do want to acknowledge President Bob Saderstrom for his leadership and

contributions in the fiscal year just ending. Like wise to Vice President John Barnes,

Secretary David Higdon, and appointed Vice President Steve Wolff and a special thank

you to Treasurer Karl Schmidt for his lengthy service as an elected officer. Karl we wish

for you better health in the days ahead and look forward to you and Lorraine back at all

club functions. I welcome the opportunity to work with Gary Barth as he took over as

Treasurer and was officially installed in that position for the upcoming year.

Today as I write this article I am looking forward to the July cruise night and the Ladies

Tour. Cheryl Delmont has spearheaded this outing and I’m looking forward to seeing

the Chicago and Alton Depot. Thank you Cheryl!!

I find that planning car club tours has been very interesting and even enjoyable as we

see many new sights, meet many knowledgeable people, traveled places I would never

have traveled otherwise. The one drawback is after the foot work, phone calls, the

reservations for hotels and restaurants the person or persons setting up the tour always

need head counts. Jim Clock is our email point person and sends out request for

participation and as he and I have discussed we need to find a better way of

communicating the urgency of members responding quickly. Case in point 48 hours

before the July Tour we have received confirmation of only nine people attending. I

believe we’ll have more but what does Cheryl tell Square Pizza?

Sounds like I’m getting cranky in my old age but not really, I just have a passion for the

car hobby and just want to make it exciting for all and look forward to another year with

everyone’s willingness to participate and contribute. Let’s go touring!

Don’t forget “Breakfast in the Park” July 22. I will be showing a visual presentation of

what 46 years of touring would look like plotted. Don Oberholtz said there would be

biscuits and gravy with coffee. What will you bring???

Dan Richardson

VINTAGE MOTOR CAR CLUB OF AMERICA KANSAS CITY CHAPTER

MONTHLY MEETING June 23, 2017

The June, 2017, meeting of the Vintage Motor Car Club of America was held at Wildwood Lodge in Clive, Iowa. The meeting was called to order by President Bob Saderstrom at 8:15 P.M. on June 23, 2017. Ray Council was not in attendance, as he was attending the Back to the 50s car show in St. Paul, Minnesota. In his absence, John Barnes commenced the meeting with a bus story about a bus accident shown on television, whereby a city bus rolled downhill due to the failure of the driver to properly set the parking brake. Gary Barth relayed a recent breakfast experience.. On to the serious stuff, the minutes were approved as published in the distributor. Gary Barth gave the treasurer’s report, wherein he said the book balance agrees with the bank statement. He has made an attempt to change banks, but due to difficulties created by current banking regulations, it was decided to leave the account where it is for the time being. Gary will continue to pursue the option to change. President Saderstrom then presented the slate of officer nominees suggested by the nominating committee and called for additional nominations from the floor. There being none, the following officers were elected and installed in accordance with a motion by Mike Welsh: President-Dan Richardson Vice- President-John Barnes Secretary-David Higdon Treasurer-Gary Barth Mike Welsh recited the election ceremony and installed the officers. Dan Richardson gave an acceptance speech wherein he outlined his goals as president for the coming year and requested assistance from all of the members to attain those goals.

Mike Welsh gave a brief update on the ongoing process of changing the official name of the club from Veteran Motor Car Club of America to the Vintage Motor Car Club of America. The club trademarks need to be changed as well as Glidden tour decals and plaques. Bob Saderstrom announced that four members from Iowa clubs had requested the opportunity to join us for our tour in Des Moines. John Barnes announced that the Christmas dinner will be held at V’s Restaurant on December 2, 2017. Gary Barth was requested to send a deposit check to the restaurant to guarantee our reservation. Gary Barth discussed problems he was having due to the name change and communications with the Internal Revenue Service to register the change and related issues with the potential change in banking relationships. Bob Saderstrom reviewed events in Des Moines for the following day with instructions for times and locations. The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 P.M. Respectfully submitted

MIKE WELSH THINS THE HERD

John Barnes sent me this email – “We took Ethan, Jennifer, and Paul Gish to ride the street car this morning. Look what we found on our way home. “

The photo is a picture of Mike Welsh’s 1926

Chevrolet preparing for a trip to its new

home in Ohio. The new owner is pretty

excited and no doubt will be a good

caretaker of this car. Mike and I tried to

figure out the last time the car was driven on

a club event and decided it was either to

one of our displays at the Veterans Hospital

or at one of the car shows held at the old

Blue Ridge Mall – but it has been a while.

The board has arranged for us to have our annual July meeting at the Waterfall Park,

located behind the Bass Pro Shop in Independence. We are also having a pot luck

breakfast. We have done this the last several years (5?) and it has been a success

each time, so we are repeating it again this year. The shelter house has been reserved.

The drinks, plates, napkins and utensils will be provided by the club. Bring a favorite

breakfast dish to share. Plan to arrive by 8:00 AM. Breakfast served at 8:30 AM. There

are plenty of outlets if you choose to bring a dish that needs to be warmed. This will be

our monthly meeting for July so come and enjoy a summer morning with good friends

and good food.

DREW MOVES AHEAD ON PLAN TO CORNER BANTAM MARKET

In 1999, I attended my first American Austin Bantam club National Meet in Carthage, MO. I met Norman Yoder, of Yoder, Kansas. Norman owned a 1930 American Austin Business Coupe (Type 138, which is a 3-window) - which his family owned when he was born. Car was NOT for sale, as he wanted to restore it. In 2003/4 (?) I drove out to visit with Norman and I saw the car. I knew then the car was not for sale, and it would never get restored. In 2012, I visited with Norman at McPherson College's car show - and received a picture (that I need to scan) of his brother Harold, his Aunt Ida and the Austin. Picture is from about 1933/34. (Norman was born in 1934). In 2015, I called to see if Norman would like to meet in McPherson, again - and learned he had passed away in Nov 2014. Speaking with his widow, I asked to have her contact me when she decided to part with the car(s) - specifically the Austin Coupe. Right after Memorial Day, I got the call. June 24, 2017 - I went out with truck & trailer to haul it home. It had been in a barn since 1963, and had been outside for the last 3 weeks. Picture is as found. P.S. Ray Council has been out to see it - I have had the moments of "what were you thinking?" already - yet, I have found many of the missing parts.

STEVE WOLFF TAKES ON ANOTHER PROJECT

Steve Wolff, unlike Drew Helgeson who is focused on his car preferences, has moved

on from owning a vintage car from each of the big three American corporations to the

British market. Steve recently procured a 1961 Bugeye Sprite and to quote “948cc’s of

raw power”. This project may not move forward for awhile as Steve is currently up to his

elbows in the restoration of his 1962 Ford Fairlane.

CLUB VISITS DES MOINES, IOWA

June 23 and 24th found our group in Des Moines visiting the unbelievable Chevrolet

collection owned by Dennis Albaugh. He has managed to collect at least one of every

Chevrolet convertible between 1912 and 1975 along with hundreds of pedal cars, gas

pumps and globes. In the picture below we see he had a particular liking for the 1957

Chevy so he owns one of each color. Besides the car collection Bob Saderstrom and

Eileen McKee made arrangements for us to visit several interesting sites making it a

great weekend getaway.

From the Curator – Butch Papon, Kansas City Automotive Museum

First, I would like to invite everyone to join us for two exciting events this month! The first is the

People's Choice Car Show on July 15 at Carriage House of Johnson County in DeSoto Kansas.

This is our third year doing this in conjunction with the Carriage House. All proceeds benefit the

Kansas City Automotive Museum. The second is our first venture with the National World War I

Museum and Memorial called The Great Car Show. This show will be held on July 30 on the

south east lawn of the Museum. In addition to the hundreds of individual cars on display, we will

feature a select group of cars that are "by Invitation only". Additionally, we are offering reserved

areas for car clubs. I encourage you to visit our website at www.thegreatcarshow.com for

more information.

Second, the Museum is looking to expand our archives and display content. If anyone has auto

related material that might be of use for educational purposes and are willing to donate please

contact us at [email protected]. For more information on what we are

accepting please visit our "wishlist" here. Our latest donation was a '48 Chrysler New Yorker

sedan that we currently have displayed in front of the Museum. Many of the volunteers have

helped get it running and looking better than it did when it arrived. We could also use a few

more volunteers, so if you have extra time we have a project for you!

July is always Military Month at the Kansas City Automotive Museum (KCAM). We try to

pay tribute to the great vehicles that helped win our freedom and supported our troops

around the globe. By doing this we hope that in some small way we are also honoring

our brave men and women who served and are now serving in the military. The Military

Vehicle Preservation Association provides the vehicles and displays that accompany

the vehicles. This is the third year for this display and it always draws well deserved

praise from the public.

This year we are honored to have Jeeps (General Purpose vehicles) ranging from World War II to the Vietnam era (a Ford GP, M-38, M-151 and more). We also have an ambulance, a Dodge ¾ ton truck, and a Mule, many of which were used in Vietnam. There will be a World War II Cushman scooter and a courier's bicycle. In addition to the vehicles there will be displays of military personnel mannequins, personal weapons, a gas mask display and an army chow display. Come see the display. Perhaps you can invite someone you know who is a veteran or is

interested in military history to take a trip down memory lane. No doubt it will be greatly

enjoyed by all of you. In any event come see us at the Museum, 15095 W. 116th St., Olathe,

Kansas 66062 (SE Corner of 116th St and Strang Line Rd.) We always have something new to

see.

NATIONAL COLLECTOR CAR DAY

We had a great turn out for the National Collector Car Appreciation Day, July 14th.

Twenty-one members brought nine vintage automobiles. Customers of Culvers

seemed to enjoy seeing the vintage autos. The cars displayed were: 1955 Lincoln

Capri, 1937 Ford coupe, 1971 Chevrolet pick-up, 1957 Studebaker, 1959

Chevrolet Bel Air, 1964 Ford Thunderbird, 1971 Pontiac GTO, 1957 Ford Fairlane

and a 1979 Lincoln Mark V.

LADIES TOUR GREAT FUN FOR ALL

Who would expect that a museum for displaying human hair art could hold your

attention for any length of time and actually be both interesting and informative?

Well, twenty one members and not the same twenty one from the cruise the night

before found this museum to be quite fascinating. Leila, the owner of Leila’s Hair

Museum met us and gave a most interesting tour. She has made a life-long study

of this art form and has traveled the world in search of information and items for

her museum. If you did not attend there is no way I can convince you that you

missed out on something very special.

Following the museum tour we headed to the Chicago & Alton Railroad Depot for

a review of history as it related to the railroad. Our tour guides split the group into

two sections so we could tour both floors and hear the interesting stories of how

the depot operated in the early days of railroads. Once again, an interesting

resource for bringing our past history to life in an enlightening way.

From the depot we drove a short distance to the Square Pizza restaurant for a

great lunch. Cheryl Delmont and those that helped her with this tour managed to

find yet another fascinating place to visit in our own backyards that we have mostly

overlooked. One of the great benefits of belonging to this car club is that we are all

exposed to such interesting and educational experiences that we might not have

explored on our own. Who will plan the next outing and where will we go that can

possible be as interesting as the places we have been? I don’t have the answer

but I am confident it will happen.
