“SENATE BILL 28” Kent Stutzman, KB0RWI

I was looking for Senate Bill 28 and found a non-partisan site to track bills of interest and easier to use than Thomas and other legislative information interest sites. I have signed up, and will check it out. I wanted you to know about this and check for yourself as it cross-referecnces all bills having to do with legislation in committee and the other chambers. You can choose your state of choice (Kansas was mine) and follow bills in your state by keyword. If you feel it valuable and helpful to you, it may be to others. Here is the link to Senate Bill 28.

73Kent Stutzman, KB0RWI<[email protected]> <snipped> from “LL”=========================

Orlan and Larry,

There is nothing like going to the man himself. I called ARRL and talked to Allen. The only legislation that directly threatens the 70cm ham bands is HR 607. Allen has not heard anything about SB28. If he does, he will let the list know. He sounded like he had a busy Friday afternoon, all good he said; but our main focus remains on defeating and keeping HR 607 out of Sen Peter Kings Committee. If that happens, then we have a bigger fight on our hands. Our goal at present is to keep the pressure on to defeat the bill before it can see the light of day inside a committee hearing room. IF anyone gets PC Magazine, Allen says that there is an article in it that calls HR 607 a bad idea.

Here is the PC Mag link:

Ha – Ha - Ha – Ha - Ha – Ha - Ha – Ha CORPORATE SHAKE-UP. If you've ever worked for a boss who reacts before getting the facts and thinking things through, you will love this!

Arcelor-Mittal Steel, feeling it was time for a shake-up, hired a new CEO. The new boss was determined to rid the company of all slackers.

On a tour of the facilities, the CEO noticed a guy leaning against a wall. The room was full of workers and he wanted to let them know that he meant business. He asked the guy, "How much money do you make a week?"

A little surprised, the young man looked at him and said, "I make $400 a week. Why?"

The CEO said, "Wait right here." He walked back to his office, came back in two minutes, and handed the guy $1,600 in cash and said, "Here's four weeks' pay. Now GET OUT and don't come back."

Feeling pretty good about himself, the CEO looked around the room and asked, "Does anyone want to tell me what that lazy guy did here?"

From across the room a voice said, "Pizza delivery."

WHERE DID THE WHITE MAN GO WRONG???

TOUGH TO ARGUE WITH THIS ONE.

Indian Chief 'Two Eagles' was asked by a white government official, 'Youhave observed the white man for 90 years. You've seen his wars and histechnological advances. You've seen his progress, and the damage he's done.'

Page 9: Kansas Amateur Radioksarrl.org/kar/April_11_KAR.pdf · 2016-12-29 · “KAR” Kansas Amateur Radio “KAR” March 2011 issue w0oyh@arrl.net Hi Gang, My internet provider sent me

The Chief nodded in agreement.

The official continued, 'Considering all these events, in your opinion, where did the white man go wrong?'

The Chief stared at the government official for over a minute and thencalmly replied. 'When white man find land, Indians running it, no taxes, nodebt, plenty buffalo, plenty beaver, clean water. Women did all the work,Medicine man free. Indian man spend all day hunting and fishing.

Then the chief leaned back and smiled. 'Only white man dumb enough to thinkhe could improve system like that.'

Ken and his wife Edna went to the state fair every year,

And every year Ken would say, 'Edna, I'd like to ride in that helicopter'

Edna always replied, 'I know Ken, but that helicopter ride is fifty bucks, And fifty bucks is fifty bucks'

One year Ken and Edna went to the fair, and Ken said, 'Edna, I'm 75 years old. If I don't ride that helicopter, I might never get another chance'

To this, Edna replied, "Ken that helicopter ride is fifty bucks, and fifty bucks is fifty bucks'

The pilot overheard the couple and said, 'Folks I'll make you a deal. I'll take the both of you for a ride. If you can stay quiet for the entire ride and don't say a word I won't charge you a penny!

But if you say one word it's fifty dollars.'

Ken and Edna agreed and up they went.

The pilot did all kinds of fancy maneuvers, but not a word was heard.

He did his daredevil tricks over and over again, But still not a word...

When they landed, the pilot turned to Ken and said, 'By golly, I did everything I could to get you to yell out, but you didn't. I'm impressed!'

Ken replied, 'Well, to tell you the truth, I almost said something when Edna fell out,

But you know, "Fifty bucks is fifty bucks!'

Bubba had shingles. Those of us who spend much time in a doctor's office should appreciate this! Doesn't it seem more and more that physicians are running their practices like an assembly

Page 10: Kansas Amateur Radioksarrl.org/kar/April_11_KAR.pdf · 2016-12-29 · “KAR” Kansas Amateur Radio “KAR” March 2011 issue w0oyh@arrl.net Hi Gang, My internet provider sent me

line? Here's what happened to Bubba:

Bubba walked into a doctor's office and the receptionist asked him what he had. Bubba said: 'Shingles.' So she wrote down his name, address, medical insurance number and told him to have a seat.

Fifteen minutes later a nurse's aide came out and asked Bubba what he had...

Bubba said, 'Shingles.' So she wrote down his height, weight, a complete medical history and told Bubba to wait in the examining room.

A half hour later a nurse came in and asked Bubba what he had. Bubba said, 'Shingles..' So the nurse gave Bubba a blood test, a blood pressure test, an electrocardiogram, and told Bubba to take off all his clothes and wait for the doctor.

An hour later the doctor came in and found Bubba sitting patiently in the nude and asked Bubba what he had.

Bubba said, 'Shingles.' The doctor asked, 'Where?'

Bubba said, 'Outside on the truck. Where do you want me to unload 'em??'

REMEMBER HOW IT WAS........

FOR THOSE WHO DON'T REMEMBER, THIS IS HOW THE BOOGIE WOOGIE WAS DONE!

http://xa.yimg.com/kq/groups/20276696/1420871586/name/BOOGIEWOOGIE.wmv)

The Difference Between http & httpsOnce in a while, there is something that comes down the pike that is of real importance.

What is the difference between http and https ?

Don't know how many of you are aware of this difference, but it is worth sending to any that do not.....

**The main difference between http:// and https:// is it's all about keeping you secure**

HTTP stands for Hyper Text Transfer. The S (big surprise) stands for "Secure".. If you visit a website or web page,

and look at the address in the web browser, it will likely begin with the following: http:// .

This means that the website is talking to your browser using the regular 'unsecured language. In other words,

it is possible for someone to "eavesdrop" on your computer's conversation with the website. If you fill out a form

on the website, someone might see the information you send to that site.

This is why you never ever enter your credit card number in an http website! But if the web address begins with https://,

that basically means your computer is talking to the website in a secure code that no one can eavesdrop on.

You understand why this is so important, right? If a website ever asks you to enter your credit card

information, you should automatically look to see if the web address begins with https:// .

If it doesn't, you should NEVER enter sensitive information.....such as a credit card number, SS # etc.

u To: Larry and the rest of the LL Gang:

Just wanted to let everyone know that on Sunday the 6th was what I consider a super day for 20 meters. I was at the Lake of the Ozarks (EM-38) at our lake house and enjoying a great Sunday. I turned on the HAM radio about 12:10 and the first station I heard was RL3A. on 14.307 Well folks that was Moscow booming in 5/9 +20....

Ok, I have a Kenwood 440 and an inverted V dipole at about 40 feet broadside East/West. I'm pumping out a whopping 90 wts and I contacted him 5/9+ NO problem, other than it was a backlog of other stations trying to get him as well. Naturally, I decided to scan the band and see what else

Page 13: Kansas Amateur Radioksarrl.org/kar/April_11_KAR.pdf · 2016-12-29 · “KAR” Kansas Amateur Radio “KAR” March 2011 issue w0oyh@arrl.net Hi Gang, My internet provider sent me

was happening.

Here is what happened. Moscow, Connecticut (2), Oregon, Croatia (2), Slovenia, Austria, Italy, Denmark, Switzerland, France, Venezuela, Finland, Brazil, Sweden, Barbados, Turks & Caicos Is, Bonaire Curaco (N of Venezuela), and a couple of South America sites I could hear 59+10 but could not reach because of traffic. Almost everyone of these came in a very clear 5/9 or better....

I worked all of these between 12:15 and 1:30 and then again for about 45 minutes between 4:00 and 4:45. Darnit I had to do some HOUSE WORK outside or I would have spent the entire 5 hours on the radio. I probably could have worked a bunch more countries because I was hearing loads of them from all over coming through. It seems I could not go to the West other than the one station in Oregon that one time but to the East and the South it was open season on just about anything you wanted.

I have casually worked about 25 countries over the past two years and in one day I get 15 more. Ok everyone go jump on 20m and see what is up this week. I'm sorry to say I don't have a good antenna here in KC but heck a long wire stuck in the tree might just do something.

That was my super weekend.

Enjoy,

Steve Everley, KC0VYS <sniped> from “LL”<[email protected]>

Larry,

I ran across this web site the other day that shows the elevation when a point is clicked on a map using Google maps. It's cool to check out the elevation of your home shack or any other site in the world (maybe Field Day 2011). The latitude/longitude coordinates appear to be off a little but the elevation looks pretty good relative to topo maps. <http://www.daftlogic.com/sandbox-google-maps-find-altitude.htm> Ted Knapp, N0TEK

<http://www.wzeros.com/Square1net/Titanic_Special_Event.html>

This event will take place on Saturday, April 9th starting at 1300Z to Sunday, April 10th ending at 0000Z. The Special Event Station will be located at the World's Largest Titanic Museum Attraction on Highway 76 in Branson, MO. April 14, 1912 was the night the Titanic met her demise with a huge iceberg on her maiden voyage from South Hampton, English. Radio operators played a large part during this disaster. It was one of the first times the new international distress call "SOS" gained popularity by radio operators around the world.

u Hi Orlan, I just opened the March KAR issue and read of your start in ham radio. I got started at age 16 in 1951 with pretty much the same experiences, except my first rig was built from a schematic in a 48 or 49 Handbook. The rig was a single 807 xtal oscillator and I guess I got

about 15 w. output. I was fascinated by the arcs I could draw off the plate cap with a regular wood pencil! Thanks for doing the editor's job. Dave w0fcl Yep Dave, I rember the 807 well.

u Orlan, Thanks for the KAR newsletter. It was fun reading. I did not realize that you were QRT between 1957 and 1970. Sure glad you decided to get back on the air. And tnx fer all u hv done for Amateur Radio over the years. Jim KØNK TU Jim for all the special events stations you have set up for Ks.

u Hi Orlan, Thanks for another great KAR. That was interesting reading about your early building and operating QRP. It’s still amazing what you can do with low power. I wanted to point out an article in the April QST regarding Kansas ARES in the Public Service column on page 77.

73 and have a good weekend,

Tom's Key Strokes - WØEAJDenver, Co. Displaced Kansas Neighbor

Tom responds to the Allen Pitts message about HR 607, "Ham radio operators are upset over bill"

==============================

Larry,

It's "kinda true", and "kinda not". There are NO repeaters actually ON, within these spectra - what IS there (concerning us hams), are certain control links and data links, as well as weak signal and experimental uses. I'm troubled by the fact that many, many, many devices on 433 mHz are ALREADY IN USE, and nobody said a damned thing about it! I

remember some years ago, when the ARRL got their panties in a wad over us losing some 5 gHz bandwidth, but not saying a doggone thing about the intrusion into 75m and 40m.

Page 18: Kansas Amateur Radioksarrl.org/kar/April_11_KAR.pdf · 2016-12-29 · “KAR” Kansas Amateur Radio “KAR” March 2011 issue w0oyh@arrl.net Hi Gang, My internet provider sent me

Now, everybody's FINALLY getting upset about the FCC (political appointees) selling spectrum off to the highest bidder, when it's been going on since David Sarnoff and RCA, screwed over Edwin Armstrong and his FM network! Frankly, I don't think we have a snowball's chance in hell of saving it, IF the FCC decides to take it, as after all..... it does refer to it as "shared service".

Maybe it's time to start using more 220... remember when we lost a bunch of that?

I love Tom's clearly spoken messages! The ARRL is certainly not perfect; unfortunately it is really the only national spokesmen for us. W0AIB

u In the line at the store, the cashier told the older woman that plastic bags weren’t good for the environment. The woman apologized to her and explained, “We didn’t have the green thing back in my day.” That’s right, they didn’t have the green thing in her day. Back then, they returned their milk bottles, Coke bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, using the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled.

But they didn’t have the green thing back her day.

In her day, they walked up stairs, because they didn’t have an escalator in every store and office building. They walked to the grocery store and didn’t climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time they had to go two blocks.

But she’s right. They didn’t have the green thing in her day.

Back then, they washed the baby’s diapers because they didn’t have the throw-away kind. They dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts – wind and solar power really did dry the clothes. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing.

But that old lady is right, they didn’t have the green thing back in her day.

Back then, they had one TV, or radio, in the house – not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a pizza dish, not a screen the size of the state of Montana . In the kitchen, they blended and stirred by hand because they didn’t have electric machines to do everything for you. When they packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, they used wadded up newspaper to cushion it, not styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap.

Back then, they didn’t fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. They used a push mower that ran on human power. They exercised by working so they didn’t need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity.

But she’s right, they didn’t have the green thing back then.

They drank from a fountain when they were thirsty, instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time they had a drink of water. They refilled pens with ink, instead of buying a new pen, and they replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull.

But they didn’t have the green thing back then.

Back then, people took the streetcar and kids rode their bikes to >school or rode the school bus, instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service. They had one electrical outlet in a

room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And they didn’t need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.

But they didn't have the green thing back then!

Yep Tom, We had only one light bulb hanging from the center of each room with a pull string on itand not a wall switch. Our 1931 Philco radio was pluged into that same cord hanging from the ceiling by an extension cord. Orlan

u I recall John Fife (WØOSD SK), the former Service Manager of Burstein-Applebee, telling me how back in the FAMOUS Sunspot cycle in 1959, lots of guys in and around KC ran converted CB rigs, putting out 5w (input) on AM, into clipped CB 5/8 wave antennas on their cars, and working THE WHOLE WORLD... EVERY day, ALL day. I myself, along with a bunch of other guys in about 1974, built 1-transistor oscillators that used a TV "burst" crystal - 3.579545 mHz. Output power was about 50-100mw, and I worked FIVE STATES with that thing, into an end-fed wire, MOST OF WHICH WERE NOT ADJOINING Kansas or Missouri.

I applaud the new amateurs who've gotten their TECHNICIAN, but folks - it's like a driver's license... it's a license to LEARN. Getting your Tech is not the end; it's the beginning.
