We are quickly coming to the end of another school year. There is much to celebrate this year at

Kankakee Junior High School including our integration of Chrome book technology, our new Math

and Language Arts series, and our additions to our social-emotional offerings. I wanted to let you

know about some important events that are coming up.

PARCC Testing:

8th graders will be PARCC testing the week of April 4th and 7th graders will be testing the week of

April 11th. This test is extremely important to our school and for individual students. Please take the

time to talk to your child about doing their best. We also ask that you work with your child to make

sure they have a good night’s sleep, have their Chrome book fully charged, and arrive to school on

time.

8th Grade Awards Assembly:

On Thursday, May 26th we will host an 8th grade Awards Assembly at 1:15 pm in our Gymnasium.

Kankakee Junior High School does not have a graduation, but this event gives us an opportunity to

celebrate our students and recognize their accomplishments. Each student will receive four tickets for

guests to attend. We have an extremely large 8th grade class this year. We can safety and comfortably

accommodate our guests if each student has four guests. Students may not wear jeans, shorts,

sweatpants, or any other casual wear. Student may wear school uniforms, but if they like they may

wear more formal attire. There will be a dance that evening for any 8th grader who would like to

attend. More detailed information will be coming home soon.

Final Exams:

Kankakee Junior High School will have Final Exams in all classes the week of May 23rd. Teachers will

begin preparing students prior to the finals. The finals are a comprehensive test to determine your

child’s academic understanding of all curriculum that is taught at our school.

We thank all of our parents and caregivers for their support during this school year. It has been a year

of many new beginnings at Kankakee Junior High School. Without your continued support we would

not be as successful as we have been.

8th Grade Language Arts

7th Grade Language Arts

As we close out the school year, we will continue to work diligently with our students to com-

plete various tasks in our classrooms. The last quarter will be spent working from various nov-

els, The Whipping Boy and Coppersun. We will also conduct progress monitoring through

AIMSweb. We will continue to review the PARCC Practice as well as before taking the PARCC

in April. Our department is currently mentoring several practicum students and student teachers.

As the end of the year quickly approaches, our 8th graders are anxious to graduate and start high

school but there is still so much more learning ahead in the final quarter of junior high. During

the 3rd quarter, most 8th grade ELA classrooms worked on a Holocaust Unit which included

reading the play, The Diary of Anne Frank as well as doing research on the topic of genocide

and World War II. This unit correlated nicely with what was being taught in the social studies

curriculum. During the final quarter of the school year, the 8 th grade language arts classes will

be working on poetry and a unit on Shakespeare. Usually the students start off a bit unsure of

their ability to understand Shakespeare and classic poetry. However, by the end of the unit,

most feel much more secure with these topics and some actually find they enjoy both! As a

final activity for the poetry unit, in late April, the students will all be encouraged to show their

poetry skills at an event sponsored by the junior high and the Kankakee Public Library. It will

be exciting to witness future poets in the making!! Please be on the lookout for more

7th and 8th Grade Mathematics

During third quarter the seventh grade students have been busy learning the following topics:

understanding similarity, linear relationships and ratios, rates, percents and proportions. The

students will be studying probability and expected value during fourth quarter.

The eighth graders have been busy learning about transformations and exponential functions

during third quarter. The students will be working on systems of linear equations and inequalities

and making sense of symbols until the end of the school year.

During the month of April, all students will be taking the PARRC assessment. This may be a good

time, after school, to have your student brush up on his or her basic skill facts. Computer

programs the students can use to assist with basic skills facts are: IXL.com, Magnahigh and

MobyMax. The practice will also assist the students when they complete the last Performance

Series assessment in May.

7th Grade Social Studies

Spanish Culture

As the seventh grade social studies has progressed throughout early American History, our student now have learned about the

U.S. Constitution and what it means to be a citizen of a community. The students have worked hard to learn about the three

branches of government and what rights a citizens can exercise.

Fourth quarter brings on ideas of how the nation was divided over slavery between the Northern and the Southern states. The

students will be using their resources to get to the bottom of why the Civil War happened, how the United States stretched from

sea to shining sea, and how industry changed the country forever.

Below are resources that the students may access on their Chromebooks or any internet device.

the curriculum.

Students can create a free account and look at currents events on a variety of subjects. These articles can be seen in a variety

of reading levels, which allows students to challenge themselves as they work on their reading skills. These articles include

writing and quiz options for the students to assess their skills.

Students in Mr. Bretzlaff's first semester Spanish Culture class took a trip to Martinez Taco’s Store in Kankakee as part of

their unit on Hispanic cuisine. Students enjoyed sampling the various flavors that Latin food has to offer over an extended

lunch visit. Besides sampling various dishes during this unit, students were also asked to complete a STEM project in which

they had to plan a menu for a Latin American restaurant. As part of the project students were asked to calculate the cost of

creating each menu item, determine how much to mark up each item, and then determine a final price that allowed their

restaurant to have competitive prices with other local restaurants. With the beginning of a new semester in January, Mr.

Bretzlaff welcomed a new group of students who are beginning to examine the nature of culture and the role that it plays in

their lives. The enthusiastic group of students that have enrolled in Spanish Culture this semester have given the class its

largest enrollment to date! Students in Spanish Culture class have been using their Chromebooks to access the site Newsela

as part of their daily bellwork. Newsela is a site that allows students to read about current events at their Lexile level. Stu-

dents are both assigned articles to read and are given a choice based on what articles peak their interest. Ask your child to

show you the site and please encourage them to read more current events outside of class. Gracias!

Reinforcing Testing Skills to ESL/ELL Students

Spring is the perfect time to remind students how important it is to finish the school year on a positive note! Parents and teachers can

work together to make sure that once the weather changes, students do not neglect their homework or their academic grades.

English language learners may need help in learning how to study for content area tests. Here are some helpful techniques that you

can teach them or can be helpful to any student.

In the classroom:

● Teach students to study actively. They are more likely to remember material if it is written down or if they say it out loud than

if it is only read or heard.

● Make sure that students comprehend the material they are studying. If they understand the material, they will be able to

remember it better.

● Assess prior knowledge so that you can connect new material to something that students already know. Teach students to

make this connection themselves. You want to foster independent learners.

● Have students create their own examples when trying to understand and remember a general concept. This not only helps

students remember the concept better, but also helps them check their own understanding.

● Teach students to visualize what they're trying to learn. Have them create a mental image or organize information on a graphic

organizer.

● Show students how to pick out the most important concepts. They will not be able to memorize everything in a literature unit,

for example. ESLS/ELLS need to learn how to concentrate on the main ideas.

● They need to learn to pay attention to the information the teacher indicates is important. This is particularly difficult for

English language learners. Demonstrate to them how their teachers signal important information. It could be written on the

board, repeated many times or prefaced with words such as, "This is important."

● Set reasonable goals for the information your English language learners should be responsible for. There is no point in their

memorizing a list of spelling words, for example, if they do not understand what the words mean.

At home:

● Provide a quiet place to study.

● Review new information together.

● Organize information into sections.

● Help your child make the most of his time.

● Communicate with your child’s teachers.

If parents and teachers work together to help students organize their time after school and support their study skills during spring

fever, we can turn spring slacking into a recipe for outstanding scholastic achievement.

Scholastic System 44 Reading Program

7th Grade Science

Our seventh grade scientists have recently finished learning about what makes a

living thing alive and the different parts of the cell. They discussed how the

different parts of the cell operate and work together to stay alive. They also

learned about the different types of living things.

In the fourth quarter, they will discuss life cycles and how the food cycle works.

They will be researching about an endangered species and creating a digital

project about it. Please be sure to ask your seventh grader about their animal and

its habitat.

8th Grade Science

Our eighth grade scientists learned about plate tectonics, earthquakes,

and volcanoes in the third quarter. They are currently working on a

volcano research project. Please ask your eighth grader about their

volcano and the damage that it causes when it erupts.

In the final quarter of their time here at KJHS, the eighth graders will be

learning about the weather and climate of our planet and area. By the end

of the school year they may be able to ‘accurately’ predict the weather

given enough information. Be on the lookout during the fourth quarter

for a weather or water cycle project from your eighth grader.

News from Ms. Farrell’s Class

Art with Mrs. Harris

April 18th Beware

Case #1 Police Narrative

I responded to a call around 7:20 on April 18, 2016. I was met in the lobby of the school by Mr. Hensley and the art teacher

Mrs. Harris. I talked to the art teacher Mrs. Harris about the theft. She stated on the night of April 15, 2016, a painting was

hanging in the art room 137 on the blackboard on the south wall. She was at KJHS until 7:30p.m. that night. It came up missing

between the hours of 7:30 pm Friday to 7:15 on Monday April 4 2016. There were several school events that weekend. Track

and soccer sign-up and practice, girls meeting , help with assignments, Teachers working in their room, and baseball practice.

Report issued 4-18-16.

This is what students in art will be investigating. They will work in groups and each will have their own assignment. The

students are to find the perpetrator and the painting somewhere in the building. Their teachers will have clues for them each

day. In art we will be doing crime scene sketches, finger printing, foot print analysis, facial recognition, and decoding. All of

these assignments will be discussed with artworks that have secrets hidden in them.

I have had fun with creating this assignment. My hope is the student will have just as much fun finding out WHO DONE

IT!!!!

Ms. Farrell’s Multiply-handicapped classroom finished last semester by writing letters and sending Christmas cards to

soldiers stationed overseas as part of a radio station push to send out thousands of letters to the troops. Her students wrote

about their favorite Christmas memories, presents, and wishes and requested responses from whoever received their letters.

No responses yet, but they are still hopeful.

This quarter, these same students have gone shopping at Ultra in order to pick and purchase food to use in their cooking class.

They have made menus and have chosen what they want to learn how to cook.

These same students have also continued the tradition of designing safety posters for a contest held by Traveler’s Insurance

and will be going to an awards presentation in April. They have also participated In a field trip to see the Kankakee High

School play “Once Upon a Matress” where they were impressed with the students performing this play. They have written

letters of thanks and congratulation to the cast members of this play.

New plans for the coming semester include an additional shopping trip to Ultra to purchase ingredients for their cooking class.

Plans are in the works for a tour and buying trip to Barnes and Nobel in order to select and purchase new books for the school

library. The class is also hoping to go on a Mother’s Day shopping trip with the possibility of a restaurant experience during

the month of May.

We would like to thank everyone who has sent in box tops for them to count, sort, and mail in for the Box Tops for Education

program. These students share the task of cutting them out, counting them out, and packaging them for mailing in order to

both help their functional skills and to raise money for the class to go on special shopping trips and other social experiences.

Counselor’s Corner We have started our final nine weeks of the school year!

Homework Lab

Homework Lab occurs weekly on Tuesdays at the Junior High. If you would like your child to be part of this academic support

program please contact the counselors’ office @ 815.802.5715. The program occurs every Tuesday from 3:05-4:30 p.m., with

busing provided.

PARRC

Our building conducted a practice PARCC test scenario before spring break. The official PARCC test will occur for our 8 th

grade students the week of April 4th and for our 7th grade students the week of April 11th.

Career Day

Our 8th grade students will travel to the Hilton Garden Inn of Kankakee on April 12th to participate in the Kankakee Area

Career Center’s Career Day.

Athletics Track: Track is underway and they are having a blast! With over 100 athletes on the team, the team is poised to have major

depth and talent. The coaches (Coach Culver, Coach Lund, Coach Kearney, Coach King, and Coach Olmstead) are looking

forward to the season. The first meet will be in the next few weeks and the team will be participating in an invitational in

Urbana at the end of the month. Many athletes have their eye on qualifying for state and they should be able to reach that goal.

Softball/Baseball Information: Softball season will start July 29th (at Kankakee High School) and baseball will start August

5th (at Alpiner Park). Any incoming 6th grader or current 7th grader that is interested in participating on these teams should bring

a current physical to try-outs. The notarization form and participation form can be completed at try-outs. If you have any

questions, please contact Mrs. Sheely (815)933-0730 ext. 5843.

Special Note: Any current 8th grade physicals will be sent to the high school. This way the students will be able to condition/

participate in athletics over the summer. We encourage any 8th grade athletes who are interested in going out for high school

sports to check the high school’s athletic website for information.

News from the Gym

Wow! The end of the semester is around the corner and it's clear our students have enjoyed their time

in PE. As the school year comes to a close we will be testing how our students have progressed physi-

cally. Some of the these tests include the mile run, pacer test, sit and reach test, and push up test just to

name a few. Please encourage all students to try their best as these scores will reflect their progress for

their FITNESSGRAM student profile. We also be preparing for our written final exams in May, which

will cover all the different sports our students have participated in over the school year.

The last quarter of the year goes by faster than most students realize, so please reiterate to students the

importance of dressing for class EVERYDAY. Besides, the healthy habits they create today for staying

active will stay with them for a lifetime.

The 7th & 8th grade bands participated in the 33rd Annual “Festival of Bands” concert on March 10th. It

was held on the campus of Olivet Nazarene University and featured almost 500 students from

Kankakee. Both bands played very well in their performance. The next challenge for both groups will

be on Saturday, April 30th, here at KJHS, when we host the Illinois Elementary School Association

Organizational Contest. This is a state competition featuring bands, jazz bands, choirs and orchestras

from around the area.

Orchestra KJHS Orchestra Students Participate in Solo Contest

On Saturday, April 2, nine members of the KJHS Orchestra traveled to Dwight for the IESA Solo and

Ensemble Contest. All of the soloists received a first place rating.

Kankakee School District 111’s School- Based Health Centers provide affordable health and mental health services in two convenient locations. Dental services are also available at the KJHS site. Open Monday through Friday with the exception of school holidays and breaks.

Remember that every year all Kindergarten or First, Sixth, and Ninth grade students need a physical examination. Students

participating in sports and all out-of state transfer students need a physical exam. All students need up to date immunizations.

Next year, all 6th graders will need a tdap vaccine. All 6th and 7th graders will need one dose of meningococcal vaccine after

the age of 10. All 12th graders will need one or two doses of meningococcal vaccine, depending on their age at the time of their

first dose. The Health Center may be of help with these requirements.

Integrated Pest Management Program Notification

“Kankakee School District #111 complies with the Structural Pest Control Act (Public Act 91-0525

SB#529) through the active involvement in an Integrated Pest Management Program. As part of this

program the district relies to the greatest extent possible on nontoxic, biological, cultural and

mechanical pest management practices as well as the use of natural pest control agents. Chemical and

airborne pesticides will be used only when necessary, with a preference given for products that are least

harmful to human and health and the environment. Such chemical and airborne applications will be

made only after normal business hours so to minimize the exposure to any individuals who normally

access our buildings. As part of this program, any individual wishing to be placed ona notification list

may contact the Kankakee School District Business Office at 815-933-0715 and speak with Ken Carr,

Director of Maintenance. By providing your name, address, phone number and the school district

buildings you would like to be notified about, the maintenance department will attempt to contact you

at least 48 hours in advance of any scheduled airborne or chemical applications being undertaken, or as

soon as possible in the event any emergency applications are needed. If you have any questions or

Court Street Ford is partnering with Kankakee High School to help the Kankakee High School

Booster/PTO Club raise up to $6000 during a one day test drive fundraising event on Thursday May

5, 2016.

When the schools are looking for extra avenues to raise funds, Ford’s Drive 4 UR School event is

making it possible. Court Street Ford and KHS Students are encouraging the community to come

out and support the current and future students at Kankakee High School by taking a test driving in a

new Ford vehicle. Each test drive nets school clubs, groups or extracurricular activities $20.

This event is about the students and we would like to get enough people here in order for them to

reach the $6000 goal. This is a great opportunity to so show your support by taking a FREE test

drive.
