Welcome to our first Community Newsletter. Here you can find out what is happening in our

community. If you would like to add some news or ideas for all to know then please come to

the Resource Centre and tell Esther. Hope you enjoy.

Kalumburu Champion

Did You Know???

Mosquito repellents don't repel. They hide you. The

Alfred Unghango We would like to thank Alfred for his

great work in keeping Kalumburu

rubbish free and showing us how he

cares about his community.

Every day you can see Alfred picking

up rubbish all around Kalumburu from

dawn to dusk.

He does it because he wants his

community to look nice.

His actions make us realise that we

can all contribute to making

Kalumburu a better place.

If Alfred can put rubbish in the bin,

why can’t we?

We really appreciate his efforts, and

this is why we nominate him as a

Kalumburu Champion.

Crocodile Season

When out fishing please remember to keep an eye out

for crocs. It is the time for them to mate and lay

their eggs, so the crocs are very cheeky.

Report where you see large crocodiles so everyone

will know.

Fishing and Hunting News…

Rumour has it that Sonia Clement caught a good size Barra just after the rain on

Monday. Where she caught it, we just don’t know, must be her secret spot.

Angelina Boona

Angie works at the Kira Kiro art Centre, she has worked there since 2017 and enjoys what she does.

“I grew up around art. It was my first school in the bush with my mum and dad. We had to learn to do it

properly, do the bark, do the hair belt, collect ochre and how to get it ready for painting” She said.

Angie has completed the NGA leadership programme with 12 other people from around Australia and New

Zealand. Angie can now teach others about the different mediums used for art, different techniques and the

different forms of art. She has also learnt about public speaking, photography and how to get ready for

exhibitions.

Angie said” I love my job, I get to watch my people do good art and show everybody what Kalumburu artists at

Kira Kiro can do”

Good on you Angelina, we are so very proud of what you have achieved for yourself and for our community,

that’s why you are nominated as a Kalumburu Champion.

YOUTH SUMMIT On Friday the 22nd November, RSAS organised the Youth and Community Summit. The summit included, activities (scratch match basketball, tug of war, dash for cash, just dance and family damper competition, sausage sizzle and a movie) and prizes for both the children and their parents. Dampers were made on the open fire and the children did their ultimate best during the 'best-dancer' competition. The summit was well attended - 21 kids under 10 years, 15 kids between 10 - 25, 4 of over 25 and 10 community members. Congratulations Janelle and Liam for being best girl and boy dancer! After another hour of dancing the lights were dimmed and the kids watched a movie together. Some parents came to the event and took part in the fun. Hopefully even more parents will come next time, because the more, the merrier!

Fishing Competition

On the 12th and 13th of October the Kalumburu fishing competition was held at

Marra Garra. Families were driven to and from Marra Garra to try and get the

longest fish. With support from local service providers there were great prizes to

be won. On Sunday everyone was invited for a sausage sizzle at the indoor court,

where the prize giving took place. Congratulations to Sylvia and Phillipa,

Christopher and Trevor, Sylvester and Farron, and Sonia and Naomi, for catching

the biggest and second biggest fish in their category. Thanks a lot to EKJP,

Wunambal Gaambera, Outback stores, Kalumburu Police, the Women's Centre,

and KAC RSAS and Youth for their kind donations and support to make this event

into a great.

Only 4 weeks left.

Youth

On Wednesday the 20th of November we've held a clean-up evening.

Children we're given a rubbish bag and asked to pick up as much rubbish

as they could. Fanatically they started and came back with bags full of

rubbish! In 1.5 hours’ time more than 30 bags were filled. Kellyanne won

second prize for collecting the most rubbish and Kasahn won first prize.

Let’s all work together now and try to keep Kalumburu clean!
