‘Tell Them From Me’ survey

I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate

in a Department of Education initiative: ‘Tell Them From Me’ student feedback survey. The survey

measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The

focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au

The survey is a great opportunity for our students and community to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on

what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with

them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used ‘Tell Them From Me’ to survey 5.4 million

students. Capturing the voices of our students and families will help improve how we do things at our school.

I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30

minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours for the students to complete as part of their ICT with

Mr Webb between 11 March and 12 April. Parents and carers will be provided with a URL unique to our school.

Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary but we encourage everyone, as the more responses we get the better

we are able to achieve reflective and valuable data.

A consent form (students), URL (Parents/Community) and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey is being sent home

with students. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by Monday 25

March, 2019. Copies of the form and FAQs are available from: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-

parents.

Bike Safety

Before and after school, footpaths and roads are extremely busy. We have been reminding students in Year 3 -6 about

the importance of getting off and walking their bike in the streets directly surrounding the school and within the

grounds. If your child rides their bike to school, could you please reiterate the importance of riding in a calm, safe

manner and alighting from their bikes and walking when foot traffic is present near school.

no longer in use and taking up valuable storage space. If you feel

that they can be of use in your home or workplace please make

Moving Into Year 7 in 2020

The ‘Moving into Year 7 in a NSW Government School in 2020’ information booklet

and expression of interest forms were handed out to Year 6 students in Week 7.

Please complete the forms to indicate your child’s preference for the school in

which you would like to enrol your child for Year 7 and return to the office by

Thursday this week. Narromine High School is the designated local high school. The team at our local high school are

happy to field questions and enquiries, please make contact with Mr Rufus and his team for more information on

starting high school.

Harmony Day Celebrations - Thursday

Harmony Day is a day to celebrate our

diverse range of cultures in Australia and

our school will participate in the

celebrations this Thursday 21 March. The

SRC will be decorating the front office

with orange, which is the colour

representing Harmony Day. We invite

students to wear orange (shirts, shorts,

skirts, scarves, bandanas, hair

accessories, bracelets, hats etc). On this day students will also hear stories in class about people from other cultures

and may complete other Harmony Day related activities. No gold coin donation necessary – this is a day of celebration,

not a fundraising event. Thank you to Mr Webb and our Meaningful Community Partnerships team for coordinating

this event.

SRC Pink Stumps – Week 10

Narromine Public School SRC is hosting Pink Stumps Day on Wednesday 3 April 2019 and

there will be an array of fundraising activities in Week 10. All money raised will go to the

McGrath Foundation.

Pink Dress up Day and Cupcake Stall-Wednesday 3 April. Students are invited to wear all

shades of pink on this day. Students are encouraged to bring a gold coin donation for being

out of uniform and wearing an item of pink. The SRC members will collect from each

classroom during the day. Also on the day, the annual cupcake stall will be happening at

lunchtime at the canteen. The delicious cupcakes generously donated by our SRC students

and families will be range from 50 cents to $1. There will also be a raffle on sale during Week 10. Tickets are $1 for a

chance to win a pink bat, stumps, ball and other fun prizes. Winners will be announced at Monday morning assembly

Week 11.

SRC World Vision Gold Coin Donation day – Week 11 On Wednesday 10 April the SRC are inviting students of Narromine Public

School to come dressed in the colours of Zimbabwean flag to help raise

money for our World Vision Sponsor Child – Gladys Nhiyo. Money raised will

continue to help Gladys with her education and living.

Students can dress in green, white, yellow, black and a mustard like brown.

Students are asked to bring a gold coin donation for being out of uniform. - Miss Minton and the SRC Representatives.

Stage 2 Cultural Excursion

Stage 2 students and teachers took part in a fascinating history excursion last week which saw them visit local

Aboriginal sites at the Macquarie River, the Keeping Place and the Narromine Local History Museum. As the students

toured the area they were able to appreciate and understand the people and resources in Narromine. This excursion

compliments the Stage 2 history unit exploring Narromine's history. Thank you to all community members who

It’ last week where they were able to

explore a multitude of dance genres.

Fruit-Up

Our students have been trialling a range of different seasonal fruits

this term during a once a week ‘Fruit-

Up’ session. This joint initiative

between NPS and the P&C offers the

children a sample of an alternative

fruit each week to expose them to

seasonal fruits they may not have

tried before. So far the children have

tried kiwi fruit and grapes and are

looking forward to what other new

fruits are on offer as the program

progresses.

Debaters in training

On Monday 11 March our debating

teams went to Dubbo for the

debating workshop held at Dubbo

West Public School conducted by

Anthony Davey. We learnt a lot of

important information on how to debate and sum up rebuttals on the spot. We also learnt how to present and prepare

a speech. In order to debate we learnt how use the three M’s (Method, Manner and Matter). Then we learnt about

the different debating positions for the affirmative and negative teams. We all had a great time. It was a lot of fun and

Maths Matters

Maths in life!

Providing opportunities to discuss and engage in mathematics supports your child’s learning in and out of school.

Your child will also begin to connect the importance of maths with their everyday activities, such as navigating public

transport, comparing and choosing the best item to buy in stores, setting a budget, and cooking.

Maths in Sport

Sports provide a good opportunity to engage your child in maths, particularly if they are a keen sportsperson.

Here are some questions to ask your child when watching or playing their favourite sport:

» How does your favourite sport tally the score? What maths is presented on the tally?

» How do other sports tally the score – for example, tennis, golf, cricket, netball, football?

» What maths do you use to find the total of the scores?

» Who is at the top of the ladder? How is this determined?

» Are there other ways to record the score?

» How can you estimate the perimeter and area of a playing field?


Maths Matters continued

» How long do your favourite sport games go for in minutes and seconds? How is the time in the game divided? Into

halves, quarters or something else?

» What are the shapes of different playing fields and courts? Talk about edges and angles.

» How many cars could be parked on the MCG field? How could we work this out?

Exploring Fractions

Here are some questions you can ask:

» Can you show me halves and quarters as you cut the orange?

» Can you cut up the apple to make six equal pieces? What fraction of the whole apple is one piece? Four pieces?

How else could you say that?

» What percentage of the glass is filled with water? What is the ratio of water to air in the glass?

» How do the hands on the clock face show the time quarter past? Why do we use the word ‘quarter’ when telling

the time?

» If you fold a towel three times equally, what fraction does it show?

Browsing catalogues

Discussing catalogues can be a great way to improve your child’s maths knowledge of money and percentages.

Here are some questions you could ask:

» How would you spend $40 from a catalogue? How many products can you buy for $40?

» Select five products from the catalogue, then calculate what the cost would be if there was a 50% sale. Does it

make a difference if you add up the items, and then deduct 50%, or if each item is reduced by 50% then totalled?

» What is the best value sale item in the catalogue? Can you explain your reasoning?

» Compare the cost of a product across different stores using different catalogues. What did you find?

Family Literacy Challenge

Get a family team together and have a go at the fun challenges to be in the running for a $10 canteen voucher. Make

sure you get your entry in the bright pink box in the foyer at the office. You have to be in it to win it!! To collect the

prize you need to make sure you have one name of a family member per entry. For example: The Jones Family- Andrew

Jones 4W.

PBL News

At Narromine Public School students show responsibility by wearing their uniform consistently. Our uniform lets people know we belong to NPS and it is something we should be proud to wear as it represents our school. When all students wear uniform we all look the same and create a sense of identity and belonging, being known as a “sea of blue” is an accomplishment our students can be proud of when visitors come to our school. Please remember that hats form part of the compulsory uniform whilst in the playground.

In week seven students were taught about the importance of responsibility by ‘doing our best’ in all settings. Students were given the opportunity to demonstrate their best in completing allocated learning tasks, being ready to learn, being organised with the appropriate resources, taking initiative, showing good sportsmanship and making an effort with 6L’s (hands in laps, legs crossed, eyes looking at teacher, lips closed, listen to the teacher and ready to learn). Teachers were on the lookout with lots of Super Vals for students who were dressed in full school uniform and trying their best. Well done to those students who received Super Vals. The barrels were very full at assembly, so well done students. The school socials will be taking place in Week 11 so make sure you are earning your five points each day. A reminder to parents/carers that if a student is absent from school a note must be supplied to the school to explain the reason for the absence. Also it is compulsory that all students in Year 3- 6 attend swimming for sport each Friday unless their parent/carer supplies a written note outlining the reason why they can not attend swimming. Reminder that if these notes are not handed in students do lose a point. The theme for the social this term is “What I want to be when I grow up”. So start planning those groovy outfits ready for a session filled with enthusiasm, joy and dance. Students who are on a behaviour card or do not meet the school requirements of less than two major or five minor incidents with behaviour will be excluded from the social. K-2 Easter Hat Parade

All welcome to attend the K-2 Easter Hat Parade in our school hall at 2pm on Friday 12 April. All students K-6 will

attend to watch the K-2 students parade and take part in the P&C Easter raffle.

3-6 Social

The social will be held on Thursday 11 April the hall from 6-8pm. The theme for the social is ‘What I want to be when

I grow up. Students that have not attained sufficient points this term, have been on a behaviour card, have had too

many incidents or suspended will not be invited to the social. Students who are invited will receive their tickets on

Thursday 11 April. This must be presented on the night, signed and with a contact phone number for emergencies or

admission can be denied. The P&C will be co-ordinating the canteen for drinks and snacks. – Renee Minton and SRC


Sport

Last Thursday, 17 students represented Narromine Public School and the Gobondery/NARRAF district at the Western

School Sports Association Swimming Carnival. We had four relay teams and lots of individual swimmers compete. It

was a fantastic day with several students achieving personal best times.

This Friday we have our cricket teams travelling to Peak Hill for the first of our Gobondery/NARRAF gala days. This day

is being hosted by Cricket NSW and is a fun day for all. Students who received notes need to return these as soon as

possible. Mrs Walsh and Mr Webb will be the teachers in charge on the day.

A reminder that swimming will continue for sport this week and in Week 9. All students are expected to participate as

this is our compulsory sport for the term. Kristie Mackay - Sports Co-ordinator

PSSA Girls Cricket

The NPS girls cricket team travelled to Wellington on

Friday 8 March for their first game in the PSSA girls cricket

draw. The girls were beaten on the day but showed

outstanding

Our captain for the day was Hannah Preston and vice captain was Hope Kight- Murphy. We had a good time and we

used positive comments and encouraged each other while we were fielding. Our team scored 35 runs and took one

wicket. This wicket was taken by Hope Knight-Murphy. Our highest run scorer was Charlotte who batted really well.

On the day all the girls displayed outstanding sportsmanship. We would like to thank Greg Masonwells for scoring,

Tam Warren and Lily Spackman for helping with the team warm ups. - Hope Knight-Murphy and Hannah Preston
