The last fortnight has been filled with many challenges due to the Coronavirus situation which has also brought an abrupt end to classes. Unfortunately, many events have had to be cancelled and some will hopefully be rescheduled when students are permitted to return to school and restrictions are lifted. Harmony Day Assembly Harmony Day this year had a focus on the importance of peace and valuing peace. The Year 11 and 12 students listened to a holocaust survivor Deborah Zylberstein-Reed who shared her story with the students speaking of the evil that can be done by human beings and of how it is important that we learn from the past for the benefit of all humankind. This was followed by a somewhat humorous performance presented by Loyola students and staff asking them to articulate how they are working for the good of our planet and humanity. 1421 Friday 27 March 2020 Dear Members of the Loyola College Community,

This is the final newsletter for the term.

The Year 11 and 12 students listened to a holocaust

survivor Deborah Zylberstein-Reed who shared her story with the students speaking of the evil that can be done by human beings and of how it is important that we learn from the past for the benefit of all humankind. This was followed by a somewhat humorous performance presented by Loyola students and staff asking them to articulate how they are working for the good of our planet and humanity.

A range of activities were organised for the day and I thank Mrs Tolli, Intercultural Perspectives Coordinator for overseeing the organisation of the day and all who assisted.

Congratulations to Judge Julian Hetyey (L: 90-95) In February of this year, past Loyola student and College Dux of 1995 Julian Hetyey was welcomed as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Victoria. This is an outstanding achievement and we congratulate Julian on his appointment. We hope to be able to invite him back to Loyola later in the year.

Student Dress Code It is timely to remind families that the winter uniform requirements commence next term. There is a changeover period up until the end of the first week of Term 2 after which all students are to be in winter uniform. All students in day uniform need to wear their blazer to and from the College and anywhere in public when they are in their College winter uniform.

I ask for the support and cooperation of all families with regard to this matter.

Coronavirus and School Closure I have sent a letter to all families outlining the current situation with school attendance and remote learning from home. At this point in time students are expected to return to school on Wednesday 15 April. Any changes to this arrangement will be communicated once the College is notified.

Easter Greetings We are in fourth week of Lent this week. As Lent draws to a close in the coming weeks we look for hope in the Resurrection of Christ our Saviour and Redeemer. Christ came to save all because God’s love is for all humankind.

This Easter will prove to be a difficult one to celebrate as Church services are currently not able to proceed due to the Coronavirus situation. I invite families to use this time to reflect on your own lives and ask yourselves how you are allowing God to work through you to bring about His kingdom here on earth particularly during these challenging times.

We are living in a period of high uncertainty, something new for our society and for our Loyola community. It is at these times that we must unite to support each other and find comfort in God who is with us all the way. We know this from the Easter story, Jesus suffered, died and overcame death paying the ultimate price so that we might be saved. He promised us that He would be with us until the end of time. He showed us how much God loves us. Let us all allow the light of Easter hope to shine and be seen in us by the way we are with others, especially the vulnerable, the poor, the sick and the lonely.

I wish all every blessing this Easter, a safe and happy holiday break and I look forward to seeing you all next term.

I leave you with the following reflection: When this is over, may we never again take for granted A handshake with a stranger Full shelves at the store Conversations with neighbours A crowded theatre Friday night out The taste of communion A routine check-up The school rush each morning Coffee with a friend The stadium roaring Each deep breath A boring Tuesday Life itself. When this ends, may we find that we have become more like the people we wanted to be we were called to be and may we stay that way – better for each other because of the worst.

FROM DEPUTY PRINCIPAL IGNATIAN MISSION & IDENTITY

Changes to Mass Arrangements in the State of Victoria Normally in this edition of the Ignatian, we publish the program for Easter liturgies in our parishes. However, due to the extraordinary circumstances our community is facing with the COVID-19, all masses in the Archdiocese of Melbourne and other Victorian dioceses have been cancelled until further notice. Here is an extract from the Victorian Bishops’ letter to Catholics:

The Bishops of the Province of Victoria have given this prayerful and considered reflection, and have determined the following actions: Immediate suspension of public liturgies, celebrations of the Mass, until further notice. All other gatherings are suspended. For clarification of any concerns, please contact your local diocesan authority.

All Catholics in Victoria are dispensed from their Sunday obligation until further notice (CANON 1248).

As such, class masses at Loyola have been suspended. We will still run class-based liturgies but will not have combined class liturgies or distribute communion.

Mr Jamie McIlroy, Head of Ignatian Service has provided this prayer from Pope Francis. O Mary, you shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick. At the foot of the Cross you participated in Jesus’ pain, with steadfast faith.

You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need. We are certain that you will provide, so that, as you did at Cana of Galilee, joy and feasting might return after this moment of trial.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the Father’s will and to do what Jesus tells us: He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and bore our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen.

We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test – and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

Christian Service – Activities Week "Love ought to manifest itself in deeds rather than in words" (230, The Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius)

During Activities Week [March 02 - March 06] our Year 11 Students worked at Christian service placements in our wider community. These placements covered a range of welfare areas including aged care, disability services, environmental, outreach services and educational services for young people at risk.

The reports we received from their supervisors indicated that the students engaged with the activities and the clients with positive enthusiasm, thoughtfulness and compassion. They took the initiative in, at times, challenging situations which took many of them outside their ‘comfort zones’. Staff who visited the students or who accompanied them were very proud of the way the students conducted themselves.

This program was not just the placement experience. Students have been preparing for it since mid-last year – obtaining Police Checks, attending assemblies with speakers from various welfare organisations, researching their placements and completing classroom preparation activities. Whilst on the placement, students were required to complete journal reflections and, post the week, debriefing sessions. The first Year 11 SAC in Religious Education classes includes a focus on learnings from their experiences and how they link to the Catholic Social Teaching principles of human dignity and caring for the marginalized.

I commend the cohort on the mature way they served members of the broader community. Given the current climate of fear and uncertainty let us all continue to serve and reach out to those who are in need.

FROM HEAD OF HUMANITIES

Year 11 Christian Service – Jarjum College Earlier this month, I was fortunate enough to be able to accompany Brodie Carr, Eduarda Rozov and Erica Parker on a trip to Sydney to participate in a Christian Service Program at Redfern Jarjum College during Activities Week. Below are our reflections on our time at the Indigenous Primary School.

Redfern Jarjum College is a Jesuit Primary School which exclusively enrols Indigenous Australian boys and girls in and around the low socio-economic inner suburbs of Sydney. The kids at Jarjum are quite extraordinary. They have formed themselves a mob, a tribe, a tight-knit family with students aged from 4 to 13 and their exceptional staff. The word Jarjum is a bundjalung which means ‘little ones’ and the school is entirely focused on the Jarjums becoming their best as men and women for others in the Jesuit tradition.

However, Redfern Jarjum isn’t a traditional school in the sense that we’ve come to know through our own experiences as students. The kids at Jarjum are facing challenges we will never fully be able to understand as young indigenous men and women, but we can help them overcome their circumstances and their personal difficulties with compassion, faith and by fighting for social justice together with them.

Our days at the school started by eating breakfast and teeth brushing with the students. Not exactly a normal start to a school day, but Redfern Jarjum is not just a school, it’s a home away from home for their students. The School helps to teach them vital life skills as well as having a key role in taking care of nutrition, medical, behavioural and social aspects of their students’ lives. After Brekkie came Gathering. The entire group, students, staff and volunteers spend time talking about what’s going to happen for the day or week, give out important messages, but also students and staff have an opportunity to celebrate each other, their families

and themselves for effort, achievement or pay each other compliments to start the day on a really positive note. After Gathering, the students begin the learning for the day. Lunch was served, play time was had in the local park or at the local sports centre. Each day, we helped with one-to-one learning for students and their teachers, catering for the three meals a day and led by example at swimming, gymnastics and in RE. What struck us most about experience with these really special students, however, was how we can strive towards making a meaningful difference to them and their school.

Redfern Jarjum College is a both a school and a Charity. They rely heavily on donations to cover their operating costs, but in spending time at the College we can see how important the work the whole College does everyday is. On behalf of Loyola College, we will be donating a full first aid kit to the College so that they can be prepared for more excursions than just heading out to the local park, but we think it’s important to raise awareness about the mission of the school to help even more.

Redfern Jarjum College’s mission is to educate urban Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who are not participating or coping in mainstream primary schools as a result of their domestic circumstances. The aims of the school are to, among other things, alleviate the social, emotional, behavioural and health disadvantages of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children so that they can return to mainstream schooling, and to provide opportunities for them to pursue secondary education. We witnessed a solid partnership with their community, to help promote the holistic growth of the children within the school.

We need to support the work that Redfern Jarjum College is doing and the difference they are making in the lives of these disadvantaged students by following them on social media and raising awareness of everything they engage in. We can help directly by making donations through the school’s website to help cover the operational costs of the College and their programs. We can also help Redfern Jarjum College by becoming role models and leaders, striving to be men and women for others, who fight for social justice in the wider Australian Community.

Find them at www.rjc.nsw.edu.au/ or follow them on Instagram and Facebook @redfernjarjumcollege

We would like to say thank you to the following people who helped shape and guide the experience we were able to have with: Mr Favrin, Mr Lynch and Mr McIlroy for organising the opportunity to go to

Sydney Mrs Patrick for supervising our placement and accommodation Mr Matt Smith and the all of the amazing staff of Redfern Jarjum College,

including the volunteers who welcomed us whole-heartedly into their mob Mostly, we want to sincerely thank the Jarjums, the students themselves, for

showing us such pride in their school, their traditions and their lives and also letting us win at handball occasionally. The world has a bright future ahead of it with you guys in it and we can’t wait to see what you will do.

Special Report: Coronavirus - A Guide for Parents Coronavirus is an evolving international health concern. Around the world, people are being affected in many ways. Individuals of all ages from numerous nationalities are being diagnosed with the virus –– it doesn’t discriminate. Although children are considered at lower risk of infection, they are not immune to the multitude of news reports regularly seen or heard in the media.

This epidemic is a cause for great concern to parents, but it is also very worrying to young people. Many are wondering how best to discuss this epidemic in a way that will be reassuring to kids without making them feel more worried than what they may be

Mr Sal Valentino Direct Line: 9433 0787

already. Parents should not avoid such a discussion with their kids. Not talking about something can often make them worry more.

Although most children will have already heard about the coronavirus, it is important for parents and caregivers to take this opportunity to convey the facts about it and set the emotional tone. This may help kids feel more informed and reassured. Involving them and encouraging self-efficacy can also give them a sense of control and purpose.

In this Special Report, parents and caregivers will be provided with some guidelines on how best to approach this topic whilst still ensuring the wellbeing of their child. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback.

If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.

2020 House Cocktail Evenings A big thank you to all those that attended the McAuley, Chisholm & MacKillop House Cocktail Evening on Thursday,19 March. It was nice to see that people were happy to venture out for a nice social gathering. The event was a great opportunity for parents to catch up with other parents and for new parents to the school to meet other parents. Once again, the Hospitality students did an amazing job, serving drinks and preparing delicious cocktail type finger food on the night. A big thank you to Ms Fiona Chapman and Miss Liz Gartland for their devoted guidance in ensuring that the night was such a success.

ACS Swimming Carnival – Wrap up Well done to our 65 Loyola Swim Team members who represented the College at the ACS twilight Swimming Carnival at MSAC on March 12.

There was a great atmosphere at the twilight Carnival, but it was a late return to school. Overall, our Boys team finished 4th, while our Girls team was 6th.

Two of our Boys had outstanding Carnivals and were awarded joint ‘Swimmers of the Meet’, as they went undefeated throughout the Carnival. Loyola has not had a Swimmer of the Meet for a number of years, so to have two of our students achieve this in one night was pretty special.

Alex Basile won the open 200 IM, the intermediate 100m freestyle, the Year 10 50m freestyle, Year 10 50m backstroke, Year 10 50m breaststroke, Year 10 50m butterfly. (six events all up). He set new ACS records in the 50m backstroke and 50m butterfly and, added this to the two ACS records he already holds. While Alex has been a great swimmer throughout his time at Loyola, he has taken his performance to a new level this year.

Rohan Wein won the junior 100m freestyle, the Year 8 50m freestyle, Year 8 50m backstroke, Year 8 50m breaststroke, Year 8 50m butterfly (five events all up). Last year Rohan won two events, so this is a major leap forward in performance as well.

Other Noteworthy Performances: Sienna Day was Loyola’s Female Swimmer of the Meet (7th overall), placing in the Year 9 Girls 50m Backstroke, Breaststroke and Butterfly.

Joshua Rotin also had an excellent carnival (10th in overall points accumulated for Boys), placing in the Year 9 Boys 50m Freestyle, Backstroke and Butterfly.

Other A grade placegetters were: Daryl Lau (Year 12 Boys Breaststroke), Brielle Mifsud (Year 10 Girls Butterfly) and Noah Ong (Year 7 Boys Breaststroke).

Our most successful relay teams were: Year 9 Boys 4x50m Medley Relay (2nd Place): Joshua Rotin, Adrian Macawili, Julian Minutolo & George Kyriacou. Year 11 Girls 4x50m Freestyle Relay (3rd place): Brodie Car, Lyla Hussey, Celinka Chochowski & Haylee Street.
