Principal’s Report Welcome back to a productive and what looks to be a busy term 4. We seem to have hit the ground running with swim school already underway and many other exciting events in the planning stages for this term. Please stay in touch with your child’s teacher regarding classroom events and learning experiences for this term as we look forward to another full and rewarding term. This week, the staff will participate in some professional learning around the analysis of our 2019 NAPLAN results. This year the school had set a goal to increase the proportion of Year 3 & Year 5 students achieving in the top two NAPLAN bands for Reading and Numeracy by 3%; Reading target, Yr 3 = 69% & Yr 5 = 48.5%; Numeracy target = Yr 3 60% & Yr 5 = 48.5%. The school can report that these goals were achieved with Yr 3 Reading achieving 86.79% of students in the top 2 bands; Yr 5 Reading achieving 52.94% of students in the top 2 bands; however not fully realised with Yr 3 Numeracy achieving 52% of students in the top 2 bands; and Yr 5 achieving 34% of students in the top 2 bands. A greater focus on Numeracy is being planned for 2020. Sporting Achievements Kahibah PS will have 3 students attend the State Athletics Carnival on Wednesday 6th and Thursday 7th November, 2019. Good luck to the students who will represent the Hunter Region in their respective 100M age races – Tayla B - Girls 9 100M, Ava R - Girls 11 100M and Charlie W - Boys 10 100M. Swimming Scheme Swimming lessons at Charlestown pool are well underway. Thank you, Miss Hunt, Mrs Davis and Mrs Hibberd for accompanying these students to and from this ever important program. Students are reminded to come prepared for swimming each day with a towel, sunscreen, hat, swimmers and goggles. Grandparents Day & Book Fair Just a reminder that on Tuesday 5th of November the school will be hosting Grandparents Day and a Book Fair. Please refer to the flyer contained within this newsletter for more information. The Partners in Learning Parent Survey

Survey closes this Friday 25th October, so if you haven’t already please follow the link below on your computer or tablet: https://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/h5cc8 Your responses are very much appreciated. Bus Travel Now is the time to apply for an OPAL school bus pass if you need one for next year. Students progressing to year 3 and year 7 do not need to re-apply if they: · are continuing at the same school · are residing at the same address · have not been sent an expiry notification from Transport for NSW. If students need to update their information or re-apply, they should go online to https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/updateDetails Applications need to be submitted before 31 December 2019 to ensure student entitlements are updated and their current entitlement/card is not cancelled. If their application is submitted after 31 December 2019, the system will automatically cancel a card and a new one will need to be issued. Students in the Opal network applying for a SSTS or Term Bus Pass entitlement for the first time will receive their card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out during December 2019 and January 2020. Mrs Honi Faasisila Kahibah Public School Principal Library News There will be a Scholastic Book Fair running from the 4th-7th November this term. Science and Engineering Day Last Thursday all of Year 6 and 20 Year 5 students went to St Mary’s High School to partake in the Science and Engineering Day which included Belair and Dudley Public Schools. There were lots of activities including building a bridge out of one strip of cardboard, two pieces of paper, some straws and some paddle pop sticks as well as designing an artificial hand using straws, tape and string. All students had lots of fun and happily participated in the activities. By Kalan and Eddy 5/6B
