Paul Tsujimoto,KA-BAR Knives

Formally educated in Industrial Technology,Paul Tsujimoto has always had a passion for the science behind the way things work.Combine his engineering background with anaffinity for the martial arts, swords, and knivesas a whole, and you have the prerequisites for a very talented knife designer.

After working for more than a dozen years in other high tech industries, Mr. Tsujimoto was given the opportunity to work as aManufacturing Engineer for Camillus Cutlery. It was a position he accepted readily as heknew it would gain him a foothold in the industry for which he was most passionate –knife making. His tenure at Camillus lastedthree years before he took a job with OntarioKnife Company, a competitive manufacturer. As the Engineering and Quality Manager at Ontario, Mr. Tsujimoto worked closely with the Sales and Marketing Departmentto design and implement production of severalof the company’s most successful products.

In 1997, after six years with Ontario Knife,Mr. Tsujimoto, accepted a position withCUTCO Cutlery Corporation, KA-BAR’S sister company. He split his time there betweenCUTCO and KA-BAR projects. As KA-BAR’Sbusiness began to grow, the need for a full-time Quality and Product DevelopmentEngineer became obvious. At the end of 2006, Mr. Tsujimoto transferred full-time to KA-BAR Knives.

You can see Mr. Tsujimoto’s influence on several of the KA-BAR products. His work on the Heavy Bowies, MULE Folders andWarthogs is apparent. Mr. Tsujimoto alsoworks closely with all of KA-BAR’S otherdesigners to help fine-tune their designs and make them as efficient to manufacture as possible.

Bob Dozier, Bob Dozier Knives

Bob Dozier’s interest in knife making beganwhen he was just a boy, learning from hisgrandfather how to forge files and springs intouseable knives. For many years as a youngman, he sold his handmade knives in his homestate of Louisiana to hunters who appreciatedhis pieces for their hardness and edge holdingability. Mr. Dozier continued making knivesthroughout the 1960’s, ever striving to reach for new levels of fit and finish in his work.

By 1971 Mr. Dozier’s work was recognized as some of the best and he was asked to workwith A.G. Russell, prominent knife dealer, tohelp save the Morseth Knife Company fromextinction. The next three years proved to beboth invaluable and incredibly taxing. Whilemuch was learned about his craft during thatperiod, Mr. Dozier eventually experienced“burnout” and went back to his job as an ironworker. He traveled the eastern half of the United States and carried with him his knife making equipment, managing to make a few dozen knives per year in his spare time. Many years later, after a short return to making Morseth knives for A.G. Russell, Mr. Dozier started up/opened/founded BobDozier Knives, making fine handmade pieces he sold at shows, via internet, and throughdealers.

Thirty years after Mr. Dozier first started making knives in a manufacturing setting, he came to KA-BAR with a large side lock folding knife prototype he suggested the company consider for mass production.Working with KA-BAR’s team to modify theknife design and make it practical for largescale production, the Dozier Thorn was final-ized for sale at the end of 2001 and introducedto the world in 2002.

Today, KA-BAR offers eighteen Dozier designed products and work is always inprogress/constantly/continually underwayto come up with the next great collaboration.

John Benner, Tactical Defense Institute

Based on his personal experiences as a 33-yearveteran police Lieutenant and as the Presidentand chief instructor of Tactical Defense Institute,John Benner felt strongly that there was a needfor an effective knife for close-quarters defense. In his classes at TDI, Mr. Benner noticed what, from first hand experience, he had alreadybelieved to be true. In a conflict, fine motor skills deteriorate and gross motor skills are themost effective for fending off assailants.

With this in mind, Mr. Benner set out to design a low-profile or concealable fixed blade knife for law enforcement and other military andsecurity personnel that could be drawn quicklyand efficiently in times of duress. He brought the basic concept for the knife to KA-BAR in2003. After more than a year of playing withthe concept, prototype samples, and in-field testing, the TDI knife was put into production.

The same basic principles that were the foundation for creating that first knife weregiven consideration to future models and theTDI product line has grown from one knife tothe expansive product line you see here. Eachknife is designed to be easy to draw, sure whengripped, and ambidextrous for a multitude ofmounting and application options.

Peter Janda,FIN Designs

Peter Janda has been interested in knives for more than 25 years. He first began hand making replicas of historic edged weapons as a teenager with his father and brother in Czechoslovakia.

As a young man, Mr. Janda served in theCzech Army during the Cold War years.Shortly after his time in service he moved tothe U.S. where he had the opportunity to meetand train with John Benner and his team atTactical Defense Institute. It didn’t take long for Mr. Janda’s skills as a student there to benoticed. He quickly built credibility and a rapport with TDI founder, John Benner, andwas asked to instruct firearms, knife, andempty hand skills classes at the institute.

In 2004, Mr. Janda established FIN Designs,LLC, for the purpose of manufacturing custom-made holsters and handgun accessories.Drawing from his years of interest in knives,Mr. Janda also began designing and producingconcealable aftermarket knife sheaths.

Having had success with his sheath business,Mr. Janda took his interest a step further and designed several models of both foldingand fixed blade knives.

In 2007, Mr. Janda shared his knife designswith KA-BAR and after a year of developmentand fine tuning, the eight knives you see herewere first offered for sale.
