“DO NOT REMEMBER THE FORMER THINgS, NOR CONSIDER THE THINgS OF OLD. BEHOLD, I WILL DO A NEW THINg, NOW IT SHALL SPRINg FORTH” ISAIAH 43: 18,19

Wow! The New Year is here and I am excited for what the Lord has for King’s in 2010. It has been prophesied that this will be a year of new beginnings, a new season, making this scripture in Isaiah very fitting. While we are to forget the former things, it is important to remind ourselves of the goodness and faithfulness of God. Sometimes when the pressures of life come down on us and we are hit with economic decline, health concerns, family issues and loss, we can easily forget that God is God. It is in these times we can draw on the strength that comes from the memory of how the loving hand of God has brought us through time and time before. He is sovereign, faithful and just.

It is also in this knowledge that we find the courage to face the future and change. I have recently read a book by Paul Scanlon called “Crossing Over” and was challenged by his courageous journey to tackle change head on. He took a long hard look at himself and his church and then committed to make radical changes - to do a new thing.

So often we begin the New Year with all sorts of resolutions which turn into distant wishes as the “magic” of the moment fades. If you want change and breakthrough, a new year’s resolution made in the heat of the moment is not the answer. What we need is momentum, perseverance and faith as we behold the things of the Lord and allow Him to bring about the new things.

It is my prayer and my challenge to push through for breakthrough; to walk into this new beginning, triumphant in Christ.

NEW BEgINNINgS

As we press towards another exciting year in the life of King’s, it is becoming evident that 2010 will present new levels of purpose and vision for the church. Upon looking at our mission statement, four verbs - action words - stand out in defining our purpose:

The first three words really describe the way people can connect with the life of our church – to expand speaks of going beyond, exemplified in our outreach ministries including Community Outreach Projects and events like King’s Carols. Impact reminds of the power of the presence of God to change a life – whether that be in a Sunday service, in a living room at a Lifegroup meeting, or simply over coffee with a friend. Building people can relate to the “living stones” Paul speaks of in Ephesians – that the church is more than a location, but rather is defined by its people and their connection to each other.

With all of this in mind, our heart really is to see the people of our church “reach their full potential through the life of Christ”. In Rick Warren’s well-known book The Purpose Driven Life, he believes that one of the five reasons we exist on this earth is to serve God through the local church.

As we begin a new year full of opportunities, why not make the decision to be a part of something bigger – it may start with small steps at first; coffee with a ministry leader or event-level involvement. You may find that it not only refines your sense of purpose, but also will draw you closer to God as you seek Him for that call.

This is the overarching lesson learnt by Catherine Wills on return from her four-month journey to South America. “We went to church, of course. But I don’t speak Spanish,” says Wills, over Iced Tea and Hedgehog slice in Robina (which Cat has discovered first hand is one of the richest suburbs in the world). “You have to listen to God.”

This apt and revelatory description comes after spending two months in a Bolivian orphanage. Bolivia is a land-locked country, bordered by Brazil, Peru, Chile, Paraguay and Argentina. It is a country of extremes: The rugged Andes mountain ranges coexist with the lowland plains of the Amazon Basin. Temperatures soar the very high thirties in the lowlands, but snow and sub-zero temperatures are not uncommon in higher altitudes. 60% of its population of nine million

live below the poverty line. It is a place where children live on the streets, with policemen guarding the alleys where they sleep to protect them from human traffickers. Bolivia and, more specifically, Riberalta - the town in Bolivia’s north where Catherine spent two months - could not be further from our comfortable, sun-drenched, “Very GC”, lives.

Catherine felt the call of God to leave the Gold Coast and the beginning of her nursing career (along with Eli Shambrook) to assist in setting up an orphanage

“YOU CAN’T JUST RELY ON CHURCH. WHEN gOD IS ALL YOU HAVE, YOU HAVE TO RELY ON HIM.”

in Riberalta, Bolivia. The Orphanage, which exists for “The Forgotten Children of Bolivia”, currently houses five boys full-time, runs a school, a kindergarten and a free medical clinic for the people of Riberalta. Cat had two expectations before embarking on her eye-opening, life-changing journey to the other side of the world: She would learn more about God and she would work hard. She was not wrong. Initially, Cat used her nursing skills to assist in setting up the medical clinic. Along with another nurse, she helped fit out the clinic, making it ready for use by the public. The clinic, and Cat’s nursing skills, proved to be very useful when she was forced to insert a cannula (usually the job of a doctor) into the arm of Eddy, “the big Bolivian”, under only torchlight. She was dubbed a “bit of a vampire” after the event, having drawn plenty of Eddy’s blood in the process. She was also able to impart some

She also remembers seeing children, prematurely forced into maturity, becoming children again during their time spent at the orphanage, receiving the love and family that is every child’s right, and being exposed to the reality of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Cat says that she will always remember singing a child to sleep, washing her hair in the river with the local girls, and carrying a whimpering, frightened little girl home through the rain and the mud.

After two months at the orphanage (and a bit of time seeing South America too!), Cat has had time to reflect on her experiences, her God, and her future calling. When asked if this is an experience she hopes she’ll repeat her answer is certain. Catherine has had a distinct and impacting revelation of how she needs to live in the light of Christ’s Gospel. She hopes to return abroad and shine the light of Christ, not just to the Forgotten Children of Bolivia, but to all the forgotten people. To the people who give birth in the dirt, to the people who sleep on the streets, to the people who have not yet heard the gracious, life-giving, story of Jesus. And so should we all.

of her skills to Mick, the director of the orphanage, by teaching him how to anaesthetise and stitch wounds, using a raw chicken as a dummy.

Cat also spent her days teaching in the kindergarten and teaching English to the boys of the orphanage. Her kindy students ranged from 18 months to five years of age, and Cat had the pleasure of teaching them their numbers, letters and colours, as well as craft and cooking activities. Cat reflects that there was a distinct challenge in relating to these children – they came from a culture with a completely different way of understanding the world, a completely different way of relating to each other, not to mention, a completely different language. Despite these challenges, Cat remarks that the unequivocal highlight of her trip was in spending time with the children. Riberalta has a serious problem with homelessness, especially among its youth. Cat remembers parents trying to give away their children to her and other orphanage workers.

She recalls meeting children in the streets who were simultaneously tough and vulnerable, having

lived so few years, but so many; children who were together in the same place and same

situation, but were altogether alone.

Could you preach with as little as 1 minute to prepare? Do you worship God with freedom and abandon every chance you get? When Trishelle Grady reflected on the impact her visit to King’s Kid in Mityana, Uganda had on her relationship with God the answer was simple; an increase of faith. Trishelle spent 3 weeks submersed in a culture and lifestyle so removed from what she knows here and loved it. She experienced life like a local, living with Pastor Robert and Esther Mponye and their family, helping out at the school, hanging with all the kids and ministering the Gospel.

Seeing kids radiate pure joy and thankfulness for the lives and opportunities they have; kids who, in comparison to our comfortable lives are still classified as poor.

The exuberant noise of the daily prayer meetings with people praising God with freedom and abandon.

Preaching with little or no notice almost everyday and relying on the Holy Spirit for a word in season to make it happen.

Listening to people speak so openly about God every opportunity they get, including kids, some as young as 10, preaching the Gospel.

Having a practical influence by sharing knowledge, teaching techniques and tips with teachers so eager to provide the best education they can; an education that gives the kids they teach a whole new future.

All it took was a decision on Trishelle’s part to do more and it’s a decision she recommends anyone who has considered doing a mission trip sees through. While financial support and prayer for ministries like King’s Kid is very effective and greatly needed, Paster Robert shared with Trishelle that is so much more powerful to know that people would give of their time and their talents to visit. To the pastors, teachers and children it is more valuable than receiving the money that the plane tickets cost. It shows them that people care.

Proverbs 29:18 the word translated as vision refers to revelation, a message from God, the message received by the prophetic. For the last 2 years, Senior Pastor and prophetic minister, Kindah Greening has sought God for a specific vision for King’s for each year, a point of focus for the revelation and message to be brought through the pulpit. In 2008 we created a ‘Can Do’ culture, 2009 saw us rise to the challenge to go ‘Above and Beyond’ and 2010 will see ‘The Kingdom’ come. There are some fresh and exciting developments for lifegroups and building community coming your way.

Vision Sunday, February 7, 2010 will be a day of services not to miss as Pastor Kindah launches the ‘The Kingdom’ vision and lays the groundwork for a year of new beginnings.

My journey with the Religious Education ministry began about 20 years ago. I was only a young Christian at the time and was approached to participate in the program in New Zealand but I refused. I let my fear and lack of confidence hold me back. God continued to persist on the subject, putting many more opportunities before me. Eventually it was a reminder of the impact Mr Drummond, a Grade 7 teacher had on me as a 12 year old girl that changed my mind. It was the lessons I learnt back then during RE classes that pulled me through some dark and lost days many years later. The thought of kids not getting the same opportunity to hear the Gospel motivated me to overcome the fears that were stopping me.

I returned to teaching RE classes a little over 2 years ago after a significant break and so many things had changed. I’ve had to overcome a lot of the same fears all over again, especially after learning that teachers stay in the room with you during RE class. All of my fears fade into insignificance in the light of the joy I feel knowing

that kids all over the Gold Coast are getting a solid

foundation of Christian faith through RE

classes.

I was assigned Grade 1 students when I began teaching again and I was initially hesitant. Their level of reading and writing skills was much lower than what I’d been used to and the amount of responsibility was huge, but two years on I wouldn’t change anything. These 6 year olds are so receptive and open to the word of God, they are like little sponges. I’d never considered myself as an evangelist, but I guess I am. Every week I get the opportunity to share the Gospel with more than eighty children,

the majority of whom don’t hear about God from anywhere else.

In this country we are blessed that

the Government still allows RE to be taught in public schools, but this is constantly under review and scrutiny so we need to continue to work while we can. We keep pressing on through teacher shortages, double class sizes, legislation changes and our fears because God is using us to impact the next generation. I know RE teaching isn’t for everyone but I want to encourage those who are interested to speak to myself or area coordinator, Mrs Helen McGowan for more information.

16 The second thing to be understood is the power of our declarations. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit” (Prov 18:21). What you declare determines what you see. And what you see determines what you do.

The third thing to understand is we don’t need more anointing to do what God has of asked us, we need more obedience. It’s what I like to call relational obedience. The anointing will position you for success, but relational obedience will develop you and your character and guarantee you for success.

The encounter is left to us. We must use the key. We must open the door. What we loose is loosed in Heaven, what we bind is bound in Heaven. We have been given the keys (the authority). If we want an encounter we have to open the door. We can have an encounter with God in all areas of our life, and that encounter will define us all the days of our life.

One of the great cries that is in the heart of God’s people is the deep need to have an encounter with Him. A moment that defines them and sets them on a path that they will not deviate from. The problem I see is that God’s people:1. Do not know how, or 2. Are afraid to step into that encounter because of weird things they’ve seen, which have been called encounters with God.

God wants us to live a life of encounter with Him, in the place of the open heaven so that we can achieve all that we were born for. When you look at the life of Jesus, you see He walked all His ministry life under an open heaven. The Father’s side of the equation was open, and He was waiting for His Son to open the other side.

The first thing to understand is that God sets open doors for us in the heavenly realms, in every area of our lives so that we know we can, if we choose, live in that realm. In Revelation 3, God said to the Church, “I have set before you an open door.” This is the door to God’s realm; no one can shut or open that door but Him. These doors are open all the time and are accessible to us if we use the keys - the authority placed in our hands.
