Kingman prehistory belongs to the Patayan (old ones) Culture and their descendants; principally the Hualapai, Havasupai and Mohave tribes.
Spaniards explored the area in search of gold as early as the 1500’s. In 1857, Lt. Edward Beale’s U.S. Camel Corps located springs near Historic Downtown Kingman while surveying along the 35th parallel for the nation’s fi rst Federally funded wagon road.
In 1880, Lewis Kingman followed much of Beale Road while surveying for the Atlantic and Pacifi c Railroad. The railway reached the site of Kingman in March of 1883 and the fi rst train pulled up in October 1883 carrying about 100 passengers.
The town of Kingman began growing as people moved in to ranch, mine or set up business to service these growing industries. Kingman became a hub for supplies fed by the railroad. By 1887, Kingman was populous enough to be voted the new Mohave County Seat, however the prior seat, Mineral Park, did not concede. According to folklore, a group of Kingmanites stole the county records in the dark of night and brought them to Kingman.
In 1926, the highway paralleling the railroad through Kingman was offi cially certifi ed US Highway 66. The Great Depression brought millions of people out west on Highway 66 in hopes of fi nding a new beginning. Route 66 became an essential part of Kingman’s personality.
In 1929 Port Kingman, Arizona State’s fi rst commercial Airport, was established and dedicated by Charles Lindberg and Amelia Earhart as part of the Transcontinental Air Transport Company, forerunner of TWA.
Boulder Dam, as Hoover Dam was called between 1933 and 1947, was dedicated in 1935. That same year, Boulder Dam Kingman Highway (now Highway 93) was completed. Kingman was known as the “Gateway to Boulder Dam”.
In 1942, the Kingman Army Airfi eld was opened to train aerial gunners. About 36,000 gunners were trained here during WWII. After the war, many serviceman moved back to call Kingman their home. Kingman Army Air Field is the site of the present Kingman Airport Industrial Park. The former location of the original offi cer’s quarters is now home to Desert Diamond Distillery. Kingman incorporated soon after the war in 1952.

DAY TRIPSGrand Canyon West®, Home of the Skywalk®
Walk the Sky at the Grand Canyon Skywalk ®, 4,000 feet above the canyon fl oor. Stroll through traditional structures at Indian Village and see Native American performances. Take a helicopter ride into the Grand Canyon, ride a pontoon boat for a gorgeous glance of the canyon walls and walk the High Point Hike at Guano Point to witness an awe inspiring 360O view. It promises to be an exhilarating natural experience!
Rt 66 East to Grand Canyon N.P. Head east and take a detour to Arizona’s only open-to-the-public distillery, or to the two wineries just 7 miles off Route 66 in tranquil desert vistas. Further east is the Hackberry General Store museum & gift shop, Keepers of the Wild wildlife sanctuary, the town of Peach Springs with the only road (unpaved) into the Grand Canyon, and the Grand Canyon Caverns, an original Route 66 attraction with tours of Earth’s 3rd largest dry limestone caverns. Afterward, follow 66 to Seligman and have an ice-cream at the legendary Snow Cap or visit Angel’s Barber Shop. Pick up I-40 here and follow it to AZ 64 in Williams, head north one hour to the Grand Canyon South Rim.
Hualapai Mountain Park Hualapai Mountain Park is a sky island in contrast to the desert landscape, with pine and juniper trees amidst granite rock formations. Elevations from 5000’ to 8400’ make it an oasis from the summer heat and a snowy playground in winter. Hike or bike miles of trails and enjoy abundant wildlife viewing of birds, fox, deer and elk. Pitch a tent for a camp out or check into one of the rustic cabins.
Route 66 West to London Bridge Take Historic Route 66 west to the living ghost town of Oatman and experience the Wild West as it was 100 years ago. Witness daily gunfi ghts and stroll the eclectic collection of shops alongside wild burros, descendants of the burros that worked the mines a century ago. Then continue on Route 66 (southwest) to I-40. Turn east to AZ Hwy 95 South (exit 9) and follow it to Lake Havasu City and the London Bridge.
Colorado River (Bullhead City, AZ / Laughlin, NV) Head west for 1,000 miles of Colorado River shoreline bordering Mohave County. Go fi shing at Davis Camp or rent a personal watercraft in Bullhead City. Cross the river into Laughlin, ‘Little Vegas’, for gaming and entertainment.
Chloride to Hoover Dam Head North on Hwy 93 to Chloride, a haven for artists. This 1860s mining town once had over 75 mines producing gold, silver and copper. Visit Roy Purcell’s murals or prehistoric petroglyphs. Saturdays at high noon, it comes to life with gunslingers and a shoot out.
