PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents, Grandparents and Friends,

It is hard to believe that we are already half way through the term and that winter is upon us! Our staff have been busy preparing their academic reports for distribution at the end of this term and we are looking forward to sharing each child’s progress in learning with their families.

Election Day BBQOur thanks once again to Anna Davis and her team of volunteers for running the federal election BBQ and cake stall, especially with regard to the provision of some voting entertainment provided by some of our musical students! All funds raised from the event will go directly into supporting great initiatives for our students.

Life EducationOver the past two weeks all students have visited the Healthy Harold Life Ed van to develop their understanding about making healthy life choices. We would like to thank Ms St Heaps for her coordination of this important event which complements the many programs we offer in student wellbeing as part of the Personal Development, Health and Physical Education syllabus.

Eat A RainbowThis week all students in K-2 created a beautiful piece of edible art as part of the Live Life Well @ School’s Eat a Rainbow program. Through this widely recognised program, our students are learning the importance of including a variety of fruits and vegetables in their diet. Many thanks to Mrs Jenny Cullen for her coordination of the event, Carly Skeers for her outstanding nutrition lessons and to all our wonderful parent volunteers who help to run this program for us every year. Stay tuned for the release of our video very soon which will showcase this program to the world!

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Rugby Union Success!Congratulations to our Rugby Union team at the State Knockout last week, defeating Harbord Public School and only just missing out on defeating Newport PS. This is an excellent achievement for our students and fantastic teamwork. Well done to our rugby super-coach, Mr Jono Rosconi.

Young Archibald ExhibitionWe would like to acknowledge Sylvie M’s excellent submission for the Young Archie Exhibition, representing Elanora Heights Public School. Sylvie was awarded a certificate for her entry and we can certainly see why. It is excellent to see students stretching themselves and welcoming feedback to develop their skills further. Well done, Sylvie!

Sydney North TrialsCongratulations to Max T, Josh A and Max D on making it through to the next round of trials for Rugby Union and to Max D for also qualifying for the next round of Touch Football Trials. Both final trials will be held next week and we wish the boys all the best.

Quality Teaching, Quality SchoolOver the past weeks, several of our staff have engaged in professional learning initiatives to aid in our continual reflection around best practice to improve student learning.

Our Year 3 and 4 teachers are currently involved in a Quality Teaching Rounds program in conjunction with Newcastle University, several of our executive team have attended leadership development programs, our Year 5 and Kindergarten staff have been working with a literacy instructional leader and our early career teachers are also attending workshops to develop their skills in leading student learning. Our administration team also attend training to ensure our practices provide a quality service to our community.

Engagement by our staff in these programs reflects their ongoing commitment to improving student learning through the best quality teaching at Elanora Heights PS and it is a true privilege to lead such a dedicated team of professionals.

Enjoy the welcoming of winter this weekend!

Until next time,

Leesa Martin Principal

.Only a year ago the P&C was focusing on installing play equipment and a natural playground and now having been installed it’s like it’s always been there! This year we have purposely taken a step back and decided to focus on the social side of the P&C. Nonetheless to keep the P&C functioning as well as it has, ideas and input from the next generation of parents is a must.

We are short of parent volunteers from K – 2 and this is shout out to ask if anyone can help with any of the following:

• Canteen• Literacy Assistance• Stella Reading• P&C Committee• Ethics

Please email [email protected] and we will let you know who the best person is to contact. It won’t lock you into anything, give it a go, see if you like it.

We are holding our Term 2 Working Bee on Saturday June 15 from 1pm to 4pm.

Following last year’s roaring success, the Social Sub-Committee has booked a host for our Term 3 Social Night. More details to follow but get your table of ten together for the night of September 7 in the school hall. Maybe use the opportunity to catch up with the ‘regulars’ or possibly even with a group of parents you haven’t seen for a few years.

PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION FINALS2019 Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition FinalsAll students in Years 3-6 have presented speeches to their classes this term, developing their skills in public speaking. Listening to these speeches has also been a valuable learning experience in recognising and responding to effective persuasive techniques. The Multicultural Perspectives speeches provide a rich range of content about this important global issue.

Congratulations to the following students who will be presenting in our school finals on Monday June 3:

Stage 2 finalists: Jasper Z, Jade S, Jasmine B, Ferne P, Rylie P, Lily D, Coco A, Calyse B, Cait B, Isla B, Sophie K and Milly E.

Stage 3 finalists: Abbey P, Emily S, Jessica K, Scarlett H, Sylvie M, Amelia B, Tyrone F, Rosie H, Sam B, Max M, Ella F and Chloe D.

Parents are most welcome to attend with the Stage 3 finals commencing at 9:15am and Stage 2 finals at 11:20am. Both will take place in the school hall.

Two students from each stage will be chosen by an external adjudicator to participate in the local finals at Collaroy Plateau Public School on Wednesday July 3. Good luck to all of those involved. I look forward to hearing these talented speakers.

.. MEET THE CONDUCTOR – MARK STEVENS MEZZO STRINGS

Mark Stevens is a music teacher, conductor and professional double bassist who has been working with music students in public education since 2003.

He is music director at Sydney Secondary College and conducts 10 ensembles including string groups at Summer Hill PS, Lindfield PS, Forestville PS, Killarney Heights PS and Elanora Heights PS. Students in these ensembles range from beginners developing foundation string technique to advanced students exploring the intricacies of chamber music.

In 2016 he established a symphony orchestra at Sydney Secondary College which is one of only a few full orchestras in greater Sydney to be formed within a comprehensive high school. In 2017 he was awarded the Teachers Mutual Bank Performing Arts Recognition Award for his diverse work in public education.

Mark has a passion for developing string technique in young players to enable them to perform with excitement and energy through strength of tone and rhythmic security. Aside from extensive work in public education, Mark also composes, records and performs in contemporary folk-rock voyagers The Crooked Fiddle Band. Through his work in this group he has toured extensively in Australia and Europe performing at some of the world’s most acclaimed and eclectic music festivals.

ELECTION BBQ An enormous thank you to those who volunteered their time, baked goodies and the children who entertained us busking on the day.

We raised over $2300 which is a massive effort. Funds will go straight back into our program.

EAT A EDIBLE ART FOR K-2Edible Art for 2019

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

- To all the parents and children who brought in a dazzling variety of fruit and vegetables this week. - To marvellous Janine Ralston for leading the whole activity and coordinating the helpers, preparation and collection.

- To our very capable Carly Skeers for giving such engaging, informative nutrition lessons to each class.- To the enthusiastic band of parents who prepared the food and assisted the children.- To our canteen staff for sharing their kitchen and assisting.

Eat A Rainbow activity was a HUGE SUCCESS – I hope your children enjoyed it.

The children loved making colourful pictures using all the colours of a rainbow before eating them! Their growing knowledge was clear as they answered questions about why it is important to eat a colourful variety, different types of fruit and vegetables and what extra fruit and vegetables they could include for breakfast and in their lunchbox.

Photos will be put up on the school website shortly and also given to each class teacher.

Many thanks,

Jenny Cullen

When your child hands in their 20 mini merits, please make sure thatthe mini merit on top has your child’s

first name and surname on it as it makes it very difficultwhen we have many children with the same first name and not one of the

20 mini merits has a surname on it.There may be occasions when we may not be able to work out who the child is

and won’t be able to issue the bronze award till your child comes looking for theirs.
