FOREST DEPARTMENT officialson Monday captured a leopardwhich is believed to have beeninvolved in separate attacks onfour people across Pavi Jetpurrange in Chhota Udepur district.

Late on Sunday night, theleopard had attacked a farmer inBandi village, Ramsing Rathwa,who belongs to Zab village ofPavi Jetpur taluka, leaving him

severely injured. Following thisattack, which was the fourth infour days, forest officials intensi-fied their search.

The Forest Department offi-cials had set up eight cages in theleopard’s territory, but failed tocapture the animal. But onMonday, the leopard was finallyspotted hiding in a farm andthen tranquilised. During the op-eration, a forester, VishnuRathwa, was attacked by theleopard, injuring his hand se-verely, officials said.

As many as 150 forest offi-cials, including ChiefConservator of Forests (CCF)Vadodara Range SanjayShrivastava, Deputy CCF Godhrarange Anshuman Sharma,Assistants Conservator ofForestsRaguvir Jadeja, Akshay Joshi andKanchan Baria, Divisional ForestOfficer of Chhota Udepur rangeNilesh Pandaya, Veterinary doc-tor from Kamatibaug zoo inVadodara C B Patel and wildlifeactivists Manoj Thakkar andAnna Patil were part of the res-

cue operation that began onSunday late in the night.

Eight cages with goats, ma-chines producing sounds ofgoats to attract the leopard andfive automatic cameras were in-stalled at various points acrossPavi Jetpur forest range to cap-ture the leopard. Five shots oftranquilizers were shot at theleopard, out ofwhich four failed.

“The leopard has been sent toPavagadh rescue centre. We willnow examine the pug marks andthe bite marks to confirm if the

same leopard had attacked allthe four people. We will con-tinue to place our cages in theforest range if there is a possibil-ity of presence of another leop-ard. On Tuesday, we will alsoconduct awareness programsacross 10 villages in the range toeducate them about what to doand what not to do when theyface such animals,” saidDivisional Forest Officer NileshPandaya.

On Sunday evening, a leop-ard had first attacked an eight-

year-old girl, Mittal Rathwa, whowas playing outside her home.She was, however, rescued bythe villagers and was first takento Bodeli for treatment and laterreferred to Vadodara SSG hospi-tal. Her condition is stated to becritical.

Her uncle, Vikram Rathwa,who accompanied her toVadodara said, “In many yearsthis is the first case ofsuch an at-tack in the village and there hadbeen two consecutive attackswithin a short interval and that

has scared everyone in the vil-lage. The fact that the leopardcame all the way to our househas scared us more.”

The same evening, a two-year-old boy was mauled todeath by a leopard at Bandi vil-lage.

Last week on Friday, a leop-ard had attacked and killed a 52-year-old man in his farm in Vavdivillage in the same Pavi Jetpurforest range. A compensation ofRs 4 lakh was provided to thefamily of the deceased.

JHARKHAND-BASED social ac-tivist Jayant Munda, who is theson of tribal leader and Constit-uent Assembly member JaipalSingh Munda, Sunday said thatSchedule V of the Constitutionthat deals with tribal areas hasnot been fully implemented inany state in the country.

“What Lodhi and Mughal dy-nasties or the Britishers did notdo to us (tribals), the Indian gov-ernment is doing today throughforce of law. Schedule V of theConstitution is in our favour, butnot in a single state it has beenimplemented with full effect,”Jayant Munda said at a functionorganised by Narmada-basedAdivasi Sahitya Academy here tohonour his father.

“...Ifone retaliates to anythingwrong being done to us, then weare branded as criminals andanti-nationals. Today, it is notpossible to fight with a bow andarrow, but we can fight the lawwith the law. It’s time that weblur state boundaries and standunited against any injustice tothe adivasis (tribals) anywherein the country. If something hap-pens in Gujarat, either we areunaware about it in Jharkhand,or we do not bother much. Weshould now stand together, irre-spective of geographical areasand states,” he added.

At the event, journalist andauthor of the book ‘The life andtimes of Jaipalsinh Munda’Santosh Kiro said, “Historianshave never given due space toour people (tribals) in their work.And now it is our duty to re-search, analyse and rewrite andcreate those spaces whereprominent names from thetribal belts of the country aregiven their due recognition.”

AS MANY as 30 women willchoose their life partner from over250 men during a four-daySwayamvar-like mass marriageceremony ofPatidar community.

The ceremony, that startedSaturday on the outskirts ofAhmedabad, will consist of two-day long rounds of introduction,followed by an engagement anda wedding. On January 8, the lastday ofthe ceremony, there will bea reception.

According to the organisers,Ahmedabad-based HardasbapuPatel Samaj Kalyan and KelevaniTrust in collaboration with AkhilBhartiya Kurmi KshatriyaMahasabha, for every womanthere is an option ofeight prospec-tive matches. The women have ar-rived from states like Rajasthan,Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh,Maharashtra, Odisha, Bihar andChattisgarh.

The reason for organising suchan event, organisers said, is askewed sex ratio in the Patidarcommunity of Gujarat.

“As parents find it difficult toget their daughters married inthese states due to dowry issueand issues like addiction andPatidar youth not being able to finda match here due to a skewed sexratio, which is worse in northGujarat, we thought this would bea great opportunity to explorematches within the same com-munity (Kurmi Patidar) in otherstates,” said Kanubhai Patel, one ofthe trustees of Hardasbapu PatelSamaj Kalyan and Kelavani Trust.

This is the second such eventbeing organised by the trust after24 women, all from Odisha, weremarried to Patidar men fromAhmedabad at a similar event onApril 2017.

While most of the 30 women

are post-graduates, the men aregraduates, post-graduates, engi-neers, diploma holders, or havestudied till senior secondary andrunning their own businesses.

“I attended an inter-state massmarriage event in Surat a fewyears ago. I thought that weneeded something similar forPatidars in Ahmedabad. We didthis only after getting a positivefeedback from the couples alreadymarried in the Surat mass-mar-riage,” said Vallabhbhai Kakadiya,who is also the former presidentof the trust.

Following the first round ofin-troduction on Saturday, whichwas translated into both Hindiand Oriya by a panel, the 250 menwere assigned numbers and thewomen shortlisted 10 men each.“The objective of such an event isto develop relationship in thecommunity living in differentstates, get women married with-out any dowry and to motivateparents to participate in massmarriages to avoid exorbitant ex-pense they incur in weddings,”said L P Patel, president of AkhilBhartiya Kurmi KshatriyaMahasabha.

Ahmedabad: A special SIT court onMonday allowed former ministerMaya Kodnani, an accused in the2002 Naroda Gam riot case, to goout of Gujarat for six months.

Seeking deletion of a bailcondition in the case that barredher from going out of Gujarat,Kodnani’s lawyer Amit Patel ar-gued before the court that if thecondition is not deleted, sheshould at least be allowed relieffor a year or six months.

The court of special judge MK Dave partially allowed the bailmodification application andpermitted Kodnani to go outsideGujarat for six months.

Kodnani was granted bail inthe case by a sessions court inMay 2009, a few weeks after herarrest in the case. Among theconditions imposed by the courtat the time was that she couldnot go out of Gujarat.

The Naroda Gam riot case isone ofthe nine major 2002 com-munal riot cases which were in-vestigated by the SIT.

Eleven Muslims were killedin the Naroda Gam area ofAhmedabad during the 2002post-Godhra riots. A total of 82people are facing trial in the case,including Kodnani. PTI
