doing to help with the global initiative of diabetic awareness that day? Looking forward to seeing many of you this weekend at our Council of Governors Meeting on Friday and Saturday November 9th and 10th. Our district is hosting this in Temple at the Hilton Garden Inn. Sandy and I would like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and hope that you are able to be with family and friends. It is also a great time to serve and help those that do not have family to be with. Help out and serve at the local Salvation Army, food pantries, or churches that may be feeding the less fortunate. THE SPIRIT OF LIONISM

We, as District leaders, have continually stressed the importance of increasing membership, reporting club activities and paying the clubs’ debts. We continually encourage the use of MyLCI and MyLion. As a district leader, I have often pondered what we could or should do to enhance our clubs’ interest in these issues. In reality, what we are able to do is encourage and plead to those clubs failing to respond. And I have come to realize, the actions and responses of the clubs, are controlled solely by the attitude of the club members and its leadership. One hundred years ago, our forefathers founded an organization known as the Lions. Today it is promoted as the world’s largest service organization. This growth was not by chance but was accomplished by the dedicated efforts of many, many Lions; hence, the spirit of Lionism. Today, worldwide there are more than 48,000 Lions clubs, in over 200 countries, with a membership of 1.47 million members. As of this writing, our District 2-X3 has 54 clubs in 15 counties with a membership of approximately 1,520; providing an average membership of approximately 28 members per club.

In retrospect, at the end of 2010, our district membership was 1,716; indicating an average membership of 31 members per club. This continued decrease in district membership indicates that perhaps we have overlooked some factors that are very important. First, let us discuss the important issue of the public presence of the Lions’ club. Are we doing our part in promoting Lionism? Some clubs fail to wear their Lions vests during their club service activities. Others fail to publicize their local club or activities in their local or county publications. Some might say the Lions vests are outdated. And I ask, outdated by whose standard? These vests have been and always will be a public symbol promoting the presence of Lions. This under-appreciated symbol of Lionism is in reality a fantastic draw for new membership. In addition, I have found in many communities, no one even knows the Lions exist! We must do a better job in promoting our organization; to our community, our district and our nation. Secondly, a membership reduction might indicate a change in the public’s need to be involved in any service organization. But, I can tell you now, without hesitation, where there is a need a Lion will be present. There is and always will be a need for a Lions club. And, there will always be a need and the challenge to find and train new members. Membership means stability for the future! My friends, we are in great competition with many other service organizations. Watch your local television and see how many so-called service organizations are asking for funds to support their efforts! We Lions ask for nothing in return. Why are our clubs failing? To put it frankly, the only valid reasons for a club’s failure is because of untrained leaders; i.e. the lack of membership drives, the lack of sustained activities and/or the lack of getting club

members involved.

Continued from Page 2 1VDG

If we continue with this frame of mind and indifference, we will continue to lose clubs and are destined for failure as a District. We must join ranks and seek the Spirit of Lionism. We must become a unified front. We cannot and must not continue as small “dinner” and/or “social” clubs. We must take our club responsibilities seriously and adamantly. We are Lions. Let us act as Lions. Let us seek and reignite the Spirt of Lionism. That is the true spirit of being a Lion! And that is the way I see it! Regards, Lion John Your 1st VDG

Be a Campaign 100 Model Club–For Pennies a Day!

As Lions Clubs International Foundation’s Campaign 100 revs up, we need clubs to step up and become Model Clubs. In past campaigns, Model Clubs have raised 30-40% of the funds raised. And I think we can do better than that. To be a Model Club, a club must pledge to raise a per member average of $750 for Campaign 100. And a Model Club even has extra time to do this–until June 30, 2022. The idea is to have a per member average of $250 per year. With the extra year it is less than $200 per member per year–less than $1 per day. And all the money does not have to come from members. It can come from the club treasury. Fundraisers can be held specifically for Campaign 100. And it can be raised from outside donations. Remember, the things that LCIF does are things that people support–disaster relief, world hunger relief, childhood cancer diagnosis and treatment, vision and diabetes services, this list goes on and on. We need to get the word out that they can support these causes through LCIF and be assured that 100% of their donations are used for humanitarian purposes, not administrative purposes. And the club gets credit towards Model Club recognition. Of course, any individual donations go toward Melvin Jones recognition. For Model Club recognition, we are talking about a per member average, so small clubs have the same opportunities as large clubs. Anyone wanting more information about Model Clubs or anything else to do with Campaign 100, please contact me, Daniel Burkeen, [email protected], 254-625-0071.

Texas Lions Camp Harry Wickersham Golf Tournament reaches $1 million goal James Avery Artisan Jewelry® presents $75,000 challenge grant check

Kerrville, Texas – Lions of Texas and friends of Lions celebrated achieving the $1 million milestone in net proceeds from the 25th Annual Harry Wickersham Golf Tournament at the closing Friday Awards Night at Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville, August 3. Chris Avery, President & CEO of James Avery Artisan Jewelry, participated in the announcement and presented the $75,000 challenge grant check. “The Harry Wickersham Golf Tournament is an annual fundraising effort which began in 1993 to help children with disabilities, vision-hearing impairment, Down syndrome, cancer and Type 1 diabetes attend Texas Lions Camp,” said TLC CEO Stephen Mabry. “TLC is deeply grateful that James Avery Artisan Jewelry agreed to participate in making the Challenge Grant of $75,000 which offered an incentive for family, friends and other businesses and corporations to step up to offer pivotal donations to make passing the seven-figure milestone a reality.” Avery notes, “James Avery jewelry is pleased to partner with Texas Lions Camp through the golf tournament and give this challenge grant in appreciation of the Lions Camp’s wonderful commitment to help children with special medical conditions in the Hill Country and throughout Texas.” According to Mabry, reaching a total of $1,082,000 was a direct result of dedicated efforts by Lions across Texas and friends of TLC who made personal commitments and solicited donations from family, friends and corporations over the past 25 years. Fellow Lions of District 2X3, The following report on WSB is from our State Chair, Lion Jim Coleman If you would like to learn more about WSB and their services for the Blind, please contact me. Lion Randy Sepulvado 254-718-1983 [email protected] WORLD SERVICES FOR THE BLIND Oct. 2018 REPORT TO MD2 COUNCIL OF GOVERNORS. Present census is 35 with several clients taking courses using our on-line platform. This platform is becoming increasingly popular and our staff has been adding courses to it on a regular basis. The Lions of Texas donated $6785 to WSB in the month of September.

We continue to provide education to counselors, as we continue to see a lot of roll over in staff across the US working with state agencies. When one counselor leaves another usually does not come in until after their departure, thus no knowledge transfer. So, we put forth a great deal of effort to remain on the radar screen of professionals, our customers and the VR counselors. More work is being done with many states to provide our programs to them in their states. This is especially true of the youth programs such as STYLE. This was a very successful program this past summer and looks bright for the future. As we continue to develop new programs please visit our web site www.wsblind.org and review all these new developments. Also check out posts to our Facebook site. As you can see WSB is all about changing the lives of blind and visually impaired individuals. Come visit us in Little Rock. The door is always open for visitors. We would love to see you and give you a tour of our facility.

I would like to remind you of all the opportunities to support WSB financially. Please consider these when planning your financial donations.

1: WSB Sustaining Member: $10 per month for 0ne year via the Auto Check program.

2: WSB Supporting Member: one-time donation of $125

3: Order of the Silver Cane: $500 donation

4: Roy Kumpe Award: $1000 donation

In addition to these opportunities,

WSB has just kicked off Capital Campaign to provide funds to replace all of the HVAC units (6 buildings with separate units). These units are all approaching 50 years of service. We have been replacing parts as needed but now is the time to replace/upgrade the systems to more efficient units. The goal of this campaign is to raise $1.5 million. If you, your club, or any other organization you know of that might be interested in donating please feel free to contact me or WSB directly.

In closing I would like to thank the Governors for allowing me to serve in the capacity of State Chair for WSB.

People wouldn’t even follow him out of idle curiosity! How many times have we thought something similar about someone? The designated leader just doesn’t meet our standards. What do we do? Grousing and griping to fellow volunteers only accomplishes two things – diminishes the chances of the project being successful, and diminishes your status as a team player and potential leader. One of the main characteristics of a leader is to support those who are appointed over them. A project leader who is struggling deserves the chance to succeed. We need to do everything in our power to give them the chance. Suggestions, advice, even just a vote of confidence, can help them overcome their problems. Positive attempts to assist will lead to closer cohesion among all of the workers, and help to create a closer, more productive club. Yes, a lot will depend on the willingness to be helped, to accept advice and make changes, but it is worth the effort. Success can be achieved in spite of substandard leadership. The greatest challenge will be if the appointed leader is not willing to change, or cannot see the problems faced. There are times when someone is just completely over their head in a situation, or just not capable of succeeding. In those cases, it is the duty of the overall leader (Club President) to take positive actions to correct the situation. Unless there will be a catastrophic result if drastic action is not taken, assigning/appointing a co-chair can be the best course of action. Remain positive in supporting the original leader as long as possible. Explain (in private) why the action is being taken. NEVER embarrass anyone! People will know why the action was done, don’t rub it in. Everyone has an ego. As leaders, we have to acknowledge that, and avoid a blunt assault on it. If we can stay positive, maintain the atmosphere of helping rather that tearing down, we have a good chance of not only keeping that individual as a Lion, we can make them a better Lion.

I had the opportunity to visit Texas Lions Eyeglass

Recycling Facility in Midland a couple of weeks

ago. It was a fast trip but I learned a lot. Carolyn

was a wealth of information. If you have not ever

visited the center, I recommend that you call

Carolyn and sign up for a day of touring and

working at the facility. Carolyn has done many

mission trips and has learned a lot about how to

get things done in other countries. She has so

much knowledge so please give her a call if you

have questions about mission trips or about the

center. She asked me to pass along this

information about donating eyeglasses:

1. If the frames are broken, do not send them

Just send the lenses.

2. If the lenses are badly scratched, do not send

them just send the frames.

3. If nose piece is missing or broken, do not

send them.

4. If glasses are missing an ear piece, do not

send them.

5. Readers are fine to send.

6. Prescription sun glasses are fine to send.

If we follow these guidelines for sending glasses

we will save the volunteers lots of time. They sort

each shipment they get by hand and have to cull

out the broken, scratched ones.

I will be scheduling certification classes after the

1st of the year. So watch for that information.

I wish you all many blessings this Thanksgiving!

SECRETARY’S CORNER -Angela S Cases, District Cabinet Secretary by TiffWood - pin

Hello Fellow 2X3’ers!! If you were unable to attend the last District Meeting held in McGregor, WE MISSED YOU! Breakout sessions were held, one of which was training for secretaries. Although I myself am fairly new to Lions and new at the position of District Secretary, one of the main points of these sessions is sharing of knowledge. This time around I opened discussion with a trick I had discovered while reporting my own club’s service activities, Signature Service Activities.

Signature Service Activities are those activities that your club does multiple times a year. They allow the secretary to go in and pre-load these activities. General descriptions and a type of the activity can be loaded into the event. The title would also be general, Tubs4Teachers not Tubs4Teachers 2018.

Page 17: Juullyy 22001188 - SEEK THE SPIRIT of LIONISM€¦ · clubs fail to wear their Lions vests during their club service activities. ... When talking to the media and others in your community

This allows for each time you are going to report about that event, you can click on that Signature Event and the general information is already pre-loaded into the report. This allows for less typing out, but still personalization of the particular event that just happened.

This can especially be helpful for activities such as Spot Vision Screenings with the school districts. Each partnership with a school when your club goes there to screen kids is a separate activity that can be reported. Instead of typing a description each time, a Signature Activity for Spot Screening can be created and then details such as number of people served, lion hours clocked and the school can be filled in before clicking save/report. The biggest take away is that the club’s secretary and Global Service Team chair are there to work together to get activities for the club reported. We have 54 clubs in our district and not half of them report activities. We encourage clubs to do as many activities as they find a need in their community, while seeing if they fit into the service themes for the year (such as Diabetes Awareness, Pediatric Cancer, Environment, etc) and report all of them. As always, if you have questions please do not hesitate to email or text me! I might not have the answer, but I can find one for you or help guide you to someone who will know. -Lion Angela

Reason given by the 12 clubs were 10 in good standing, two transferred, two moved, two for non-attendance & Dues, and three for non-payment of dues.

Every Club in District 2-X3 should have at least two Membership Growth Events every year. Our Clubs are aging out. Our members’ Social circle is shrinking down every year. Presidents have your Membership Chairperson to organize this event. It is important to the survival of our clubs. Your club has to decide if it wants 100% Attendance or 100% Service. But no matter which direction your club chooses, it is important that we support member retention by creating harmonious club atmospheres. We do this by making members feel like they’re part of the Lions family while serving the local community. Engaged and fulfilled members are eager and enthusiastic, enjoying fellowship and friendship, feeling respected and welcome and confident and proud of their clubs’ service. Lions and especially Lion leaders must remember to remain open. Open your:

• …eyes and ears to seek out new opportunities for service and to view potential members in a new way. • …mind to consider how you are currently impacting Lions’ mission of service and explore service needs

and opportunities for the future. • …heart by being a promoter of new and unique service opportunities through nontraditional or special

approaches to clubs and members. • …mouth. Share your enthusiasm and pride in your service with those around you—through social

media and with the smile on your face. This will inspire others to ask why you are so happy, why you are so fulfilled. Because, as a Lion, you serve with Lions!

Share these things both inside and outside your club. PDG Lawrence Sanchez 254-466-5037 2-X3 GMT Coordinator

Texas Lions Museum & Office News 2-X3 District; Your Museum & Office is located at 3301 Legion Drive, Kerrville, Texas 78029.

Thank you for your generosity! District 2-X3 is the first to respond this year with the Humanitarian Contributions to the Texas Lions Museum. We are also the number one district in Multiple District 2 in donations of Humanitarian service contributions for the Texas Lions Museum. The following clubs will be receiving their Banner patch so far for the month of October: China Spring-Bosqueville, Mexia, Waco Founder, Hewitt, Waco Heart of Texas, Crockett, and Lometa . Thank you for your contributions. The Grand Opening for the Texas Lions Museum is set for July of 2019. In order to meet that objective, your support will be needed. There is construction that will have to be made inside the building. There are displays, storage cabinets, and Kiosks to be purchased before the Grand Opening. This will take every District Club to contribute a donation for the preservation of the history of 100 years, of the (Texas Lions) Multiple District 2. As your District Texas Lions Museum & Office Trustee, I asked that every club support and donate to the Grand Opening Build-out Campaign. If each club could donate $200.00, that would satisfy the District 2-X3 equal portion for the support of the “Grand Opening Build-out Campaign”. Thank you to the Temple Founder Lions Club for joining the support for the Grand Opening Build-out Campaign. Clubs that have not given support please get your Board of Directors to approve support and fill out the form below. The way that the Texas Lions Museum supports itself is by having Trustees that will advocate for the Museum. The Trustees inform Lions of the club by presenting a program about the Texas Lions Museum & Office. I would like to come to your club and give your club a program anytime we can coordinate an appointment. Call or email your Texas Lions Museum & Office Trustee PDG Lawrence L. Sanchez to make an appointment at 254-466-5037 or email to [email protected].

On October 3rd, 51 students in Lovelady were screened, and on October 4th, 13 students in Kennard were screened. In total, approximately 440 students in Houston County have been screened with approximately 50 identified as needing glasses. On October 6th Lions removed trash and debris from the 2 miles of highway through the City of Grapeland that we have adopted. Lions also did a clean-up at Milligan Cemetery on the same day. Lions constructed and decorated a float for our Peanut Festival Queen contestant Carley Parker, who was named the 2018 Peanut Festival Queen.

Grapeland Noon Lions managed two parking areas during the 2018 Peanut Festival and raised over $1500. Grapeland Noon Lions voted to help support an effort to supply flu vaccinations to elementary school students. Our $500 donation will provide about 100 shots, which is about 50% of the Grapeland elementary population.

Janice Tooke, second Vice President of the executive board of the Lone Star Lions Eye Bank was the recent guest of the Hillsboro Lions Club. The Eye Bank is located in Manor, Texas and is a charitable organization committed to the preservation of sight through the collection, processing and distribution of human ocular tissue; progress in medicine through the support of research and the sponsorship of educational programs for the medical community and general public. The Lone Star Lions Eye Bank is the only one in the United States which is run by the Lions Club. Pictured are Janice Tooke on the far left and Lion Lea Sanders.

Killeen Evening Lions Club went to their monthly service at the Rosewood Assistant Living Center for BINGO Day. On October 5, 2018 Chairperson Lion Beatrice Thompson and her 7 volunteers played BINGO for 15 residents of the Center.

The Lions of Killeen Evening Lions Club conducted a White Cane Day at the Super Wal-Mart at the Lowes Blvd Killeen Texas. The fund raised will be used for sight projects. Chairman IPDG Joe Holman set up early on the October 20, 2018.

Killeen Evening Lions partnered with the Walmart at Lowes Blvd. They conducted a fundraiser for Miracle Network. Lions Darie McCleaves, Lions Jeannie McCleaves, and Lion Richard Brownlee volunteered to help cook and sell hot food to the Walmart customers. They worked for six hours to ensure that they would not run out of help. They created an environment of giving for all the Walmart employees that help with the fundraiser.

Killeen Evening Lions Club had three Lions donate pillows to incoming Soldiers from 1BN62ADA unit returning from Kuwait. They had asked for things like comfort blankets, standard pillows, bathroom items, snacks, or things that will tell the soldiers they are loved. The items were delivered by 12 October 2018.

Killeen Evening Lions Club members helped the Rosewood Retirement assisted Living Center. The Staff at the facility asked for help to conduct their first annual Truck or Treat event on October 31, 2018. Killeen Evening Lions came to the occasion by donating candy for the facility. They donated 50 pounds of candy so the children that attended would have the joy of Halloween. The residents also will enjoy the candy the way they can-either passing the candy out or having a treat in their rooms.

The Piney Woods Lions Clubs hosted the Lions Club International Young Leaders In Service Award Ceremony on October 7th for the Piney Woods Leo Club members that volunteered over 50 or over 100 hours during the 2017-2018 year. Young people who volunteer mature into adults who volunteer and serve. Piney Woods Lions Club held our first fundraiser on Saturday, October 20th. The club hosted a NERF Battle for ages 5 yrs and up. It was a family friendly event, and was a successful first fundraiser. The families that participated had a wonderful time, and the kids loved it! At least 3 of the dads asked one of our Lions when there would be a round for adults only. Arrangements were made to accommodate a round for adults only, and it was appreciated! The final round was capture the flag with Lions versus Leos (who were helping us out during the fundraiser). We squeaked out a win over our Leos, but expect a rematch at our next NERF Battle!

DG Lisle Meeker visited Piney Woods Lions Club on Oct 22nd. He inducted new members Sacramento Ledesma and Melanie Smith.

Robinson Area Lions welcomed 2nd Vice District Governor and Lions Camp Director Randy Sepulvado for a program on Texas Lions Camp to their club. Lion Randy shared about the attendance to the camp this summer and about the contributions our district has made. He also shared about proposed improvements.

Robinson Area Lions performed vision screenings at Cedar Ridge Elementary in Waco. 143 children were screened with 35 being referred. We also had the opportunity to provide an eye exam and purchase eyeglasses for an 80 year old citizen. Then came our semi-annual Veterans apprecia- tion pancake breakfast. We served breakfast to

approximately 50 folks out at Peplow Park.

The Rosebud-Lott Area Lions have added another school to their Eye Screening list for this year and hopefully they will ask us back for 2019. Club President Jim Campbell contacted the school nurse Mrs. Bobo at the Chilton Elementary where we scheduled the eye screening for their Pre-K and Kindergartner's. In all we screened 66 students and 18 were recommended for further evaluation. Mrs. Bobo was very impressed at the results and commented how this really helped her get the required screenings done to meet the state requirements.

Matt Harris was our speaker on behalf of the Salado FFA. He spoke of the club’s activities and also the upcoming Bell County Fair.

It was great having Ag Teacher, Taylor Munzie and the FFA Debate Team with us! They did a great job of debating the pros and cons of the deer population here in Salado.

Allen Sandor from Sandor Construction gave us his rec-ommendations concerning the gazebo at Lion’s Park. There are definitely some repairs and improvements that need to be made and we would love to do that in the near future.

First Quarter in the Record Books TBLLC has been booking right along this Lion Year! We are excited to have reached some local community members who have an interest in Lionism, and are excited and hopeful to see them at one of our many upcoming service projects. Membership is a focus for clubs because with more members we can serve more people. But really it’s just that we love our community- and the more the merrier when it comes to positive service activities being performed! One of October’s activities was participating in Feed My Sheep’s Children’s Clinic. Held at a great church, this month’s clinic reached out to around 18 people who came to get their vision and hearing screened. Lion Lea, District Spot Vision Chair, was there to manage the machines, while Lion Angela came to learn more about the machines, the process and chat with the people. The need in the community is great for these clinics. For many of the patrons this might be the only medical care available to them, and we are always excited to be a part of this growing operation that fills this need.

Also in October, TBLLC’s new membership Chair Lion Bridget, hosted a Sips&Dips social for the community. The set up was outstanding and the company just as much so. We are hopeful that this and our other activities help spread the word about the club, Lionism and all the good available to the community. (and the dips were delish!)

October also had TBLLC members at the Live Well Eat Well health fair. The shared portable tent for vision screening (between TBLLC and Temple Breakfast Club) was tested and found to be a great work of art! Thanks to Lisle for building it and Lion Lea for providing the tarps to make it dark enough. Sadly, marketing chair Lion Angela failed to get a picture of it (sad face inserted here), but it will be showcased again at the McGregor Lion’s event Barrels and BBQ event weekend of November 17th. Come find us there and participate in the fun rodeo style event. The 2nd District Meeting was also in October on Saturday, October 27th. Again, Lion Angela, TBLLC’s marketing chair, forgot to get pictures. BUT! Fun was had as TBLLC 1VP and Assistant District Lion Tamer Lion Amy proudly wore the Lion mascot costume while the winning name was announced as Melvin. There are pictures of the full event on the District Facebook, so I hope everyone follows it. Halloween then came quickly with the launch into November where TBLLC is just as busy out and about the community and fellow Lion Club events each weekend. Come find us at the upcoming 2nd COG meeting in Temple, or McGregor’s Barrels & BBQ event at the Bell County Expo Center or who knows what else. Follow our Facebook page at @TempleBeltonLadiesLionsClub for more activities!!

October brought a welcome rest from our busy community schedule. • We completed our Vision testing with the many ISDs and our total number of children tested was 2067. • We remain active with the Feed Temple Foundation spearheaded by Lion Randy Sepulvado on a monthly basis. • We are also busy during football season as we help with parking for the Wildcats at their home games. The parking money collected is donated to the Temple ISD for their General Fund to be used at their discretion. Thank you Lions for your time given up on those Friday evenings especially during the rainy ones! • The highlight of our October speakers was our very own Governor. It was on Halloween so a little fun was had at our usual Wednesday meeting!

• Donations continue on schedule to our local community charities as well as our new Veterans Community where we donated a 70” TV screen along with DVD player and Antenna. This will be used in their Community Living Room.

It is with a sad heart that we announce the passing of our Lion Robert Farrell. He was a member of our Club for almost 7 years and participated in so many of our Community Outreach Programs. He will be especially missed at our Reverse Raffle and our Annual Follies Show. Rest in peace dear Lion Bob.

Vision screening, vision screening and more vision screening

Waco Women’s Lions Club had a busy October. WWLC completed vision screening on 654 students and adults with 180 needing referrals at schools and health fairs. Hewitt, Robinson Area, Waco Founder and Waco Women’s Lion Clubs all worked together to complete screening of the local area schools. Together we have served approximately 2000. We all have a few screenings to finish in November and working on scheduling Spring School Health Fairs. Lions Janna Marasuk, Kim Giles, LeeAnne Ostrander and myself attended the District 2X3 Fall District Meeting in McGregor. We met new attendees to our District meeting and enjoyed visiting with old Lion friends. We look forward to our next opportunities to serve within the next months-the cancer families in need, Camo Santa, and celebrating our upcoming 5th anniversary.

The Piney Woods Leo Club hosted their annual Halloween Party for Enchanted Pines on Sunday, October 14th. There were 47 in attendance (including residents of Enchanted Pines, Leos, and Lions/parents). The Leos made a pumpkin craft to deliver to each resident prior to the Halloween Party. Leo President Chrissy McElhany led the activities and set the flow of events with 7 different events. The residents participated in guessing how many candy were in a jar, a bucket toss game, musical chairs, Halloween Bingo, face painting, mummy wrapping, and singing the 12 Days of Halloween. It was a great way to spend the afternoon!
