Maundy Thursday

Maundy Thursday is the Thursday before Easter, believed to be the day when Jesus celebrated his final Passover with his disciples. Most notably, that Passover meal was when Jesus washed the feet of his disciples in an extraordinary display of humility. He then commanded them to do the same for each other. Washing His Disciples’ Feet Just before the Passover Feast, Jesus knew that the time had come to leave this

world to go to the Father. Having loved his dear companions, he continued to love

them right to the end. It was suppertime… Jesus knew that the Father had put

him in complete charge of everything, that he came from God and was on his

way back to God. So he got up from the supper table, set aside his robe, and put

on an apron. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the feet of

the disciples, drying them with his apron. Jesus said, “I’ve laid down a pattern

for you. A servant is not ranked above his master; an employee doesn’t give

orders to the employer. If you understand what I’m telling you, act like it—and

live a blessed life.” John 13: 1-17 (The Message)

Welcome back to day two of Easter Fun. We really hope that you enjoyed learning all about Palm Sunday yesterday.

What does Maundy Thursday Mean? Christ's "mandate" is remembered on Maundy Thursday. The word “maundy" is Latin and means "command." It was on the Thursday of Christ's final week before being crucified and resurrected that he gave a commandment to his disciples. Jesus and his disciples had just shared what was known as the Last Supper and he was washing their feet when he stated: "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another" (John 13:34).

Maundy Thursday Ceremonies In Britain, the sovereign takes part in the Ceremony of the Royal Maundy. This ceremony, held at a great cathedral, involves giving money to deserving senior citizens (one man and one woman for each year of the sovereign's age), usually chosen for having done service to their community. They receive ceremonial red and white purses which contain coins made especially for the occasion. The white purse contains one coin for each year of the monarch's reign.

In the 17th century, and earlier, the King or Queen would wash the feet of the selected poor as a gesture of humility, and in remembrance of Jesus' washing the feet of the disciples! Can you imagine Queen Elizabeth II washing your feet?! The last monarch to do this was James II.

Crystal Eggs

You will need some help with this one! Have fun growing your own eggs...

What To Do

Here’s what to do:

1. Ask for the help of an adult. Stir salt into boiling hot water until no more salt will dissolve (crystals start to appear at the bottom of the container). Be sure the water is as close to boiling as possible.

2. Carefully pour the solution into your jar. If you put a spoon into the jar before adding the water, it should help to stop the jar breaking.

3. Lay the spoon across the top of the jar. Use this to suspend your string into the jar.

4. Leave your jar somewhere it will not be disturbed and wait for your crystals to grow!

5. Try adding food dye to make your crystals colourful.

What You’ll Need:

* Table salt – sodium chloride

* Distilled Water

* A clean, clear glass container – a jam jar is perfect

* String– in an egg-shaped loop

* A spoon for stirring
